Inside a moment in time: James Deebo Harrison's 100yd to the house
I'm guessing this is some kind of series, but ESPN basically took a picture from Deebo's SB pick-6, and interviewed people in the picture for their thoughts.
Most of is banal stuff. but Harrison's quotes are pretty cool.
"If he (Fitzgerald) actually hit the ball, he would have knocked it out."
"[During the play] I hear breathing and I see people. That's it."
"It seemed like I was running slow as I don't know what, and it was like 1,000 people just started showing up out of nowhere. All I saw was a bunch of red jerseys. It felt like some of them might have been coming from the sideline."

You beat me to the post!
What a great article/presentation if you want to get a Steelers smile.

A great pick-me-up for the off season.
I tried to tried to take the ball and tried to take out his legs, but he’s a big, strong man…

Wow, this makes it even better for me.
Not much mention of seeing the expiring game clock tick down; if clocks hits zero and he maintains possession but hits the ground or sideline after 99 yards, that’s a huge 7 points- no FG attempt available- unless maybe would have had 1 second left? Would Tomlin have kicked the FG on 4th and inches w/ 1 second left?… Says he kinked his neck- sure looked like it took a beating at the end there… I hadn’t thought of it from the ref’s perspective.
My understanding
is that Fitzgerald wasn’t legally allowed to make that tackle, considering he willingly ran out of bounds the entire play. If Harrison didn’t make it in, it would have been interesting to see if and how penalties were enforced.
Yup
I always wondered how they would have handled that if somehow Fitz had tackled Deebo or punched out the ball before Deebo crossed the goalline. Fitz ran 40 yards out of bounds before coming back in around the 5. It was a hell of an effort, but wasn’t legal. A player forced out has to come back in at the earliest opportunity, which he didn’t. Thank God Deebo made it into the endzone or it could have been one of the most controversial SB plays of all time.

I think the penalty would have been assessed...
and the Steelers would have been awarded one untimed down, as the half cannot end on a defensive penalty. We would have attempted a field goal, maybe even gone for the TD, depending on the final spot.
No flag was ever thrown though
It would have been a missed call. Don’t think the refs were paying attention to Fitz and not sure something like that is reviewable.

There was a flag on the play
But it wasn’t on Fitzgerald. It was a facemasking penalty on Levi Brown. Thus, even if Harrison had been tackled before scoring the Steelers still would have gotten to run a free play.
Ah, yes, I had forgotten about that
Does that count as a Defensive penalty since possession had changed?

Absolutely
The offense turned into the defense to stop the run.

it would not have been a penalty
It’s my first post here. I thought the same thing about Fitz running out of bounds on that play. In fact I was jumping up and down about it. I even e-mailed Peter King about it and he wrote about this in response to someone else’s question in his 2/10/09 mailbag and here’s a link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/02/10/mailbag/index.html
Basically that rule about running out of bounds is only on kickoffs and punts. On other plays there is not a rule, so Fitz running out of bounds would not have been a penalty.
by steelerfaninphilly on Jan 28, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions
How could that be?
OK, I read the Peter King Q+A about this. And I don’t claim to be an expert on the rules. But how could there possibly NOT be a rule about the status of a player once he runs out of bounds? Could a receiver run the whole way down the field out of bounds, come back in and catch the ball? Or, say, have it lateraled to him (since I do think there is some rule about being the first one to touch a ball once you’be been out of bounds). It’s absurd that a player could run out of bounds for 40 yards — where he can’t be blocked — and come back onto the field to make a play.
by Citizen of Steeler Nation on Jan 28, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions
And, if that werre legal-
what would keep a team from substituting or having a different players farther downfield make the play?
Farfetched, I know, but we’ve all seen the Steelers embroiled in unimagineable penalty situations…
Wow
So we’ve (thanks catesinator) established that Brown was flagged for holding and the Steelers would have had a free play if time had expired! And (via steelerfaninphilly by way of Peter King says) no penalty for Fitz not immediately returning inbounds b/c wasn’t on a kick play! Shocking “developments” that would have really been brought to light if the epic 14-point-swing 100-yd journey fell short! Woodley was noted, but I gotta give a shout out to the rest of the heady blocking cadre that rallied around Harrison to make it possible!
My friend
was in downtown Sacramento when Deebo made that play. They said the apartment buildings surrounding them erupted in cheering and they had to find a bar to find out what happened. Personally, I was jumping around and screaming like a little girl. What fun.
I attempted to jump out of my bar stool
My leg got caught and I fell to the ground. Thankfully, everyone was so busy cheering that no one saw. Haha

thanks this made my morning
This was the greatest play in NFL history IMO. It’s pretty much impossible to score more than 6 points at a time but Deebo took 13 at once. I literally lost consciousness during the play and woke back up before it was over.
That link was really entertaining. The comments on the ESPN board? Not so much. People still cry about the officials even though the refs gave the cards 9 points in that game (Ben’s rushing TD and then the safety).
Whatever world, suck the Lombardi.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
In addition
I will always contend that Fitz’s 1st TD he scored he was juggling the ball and the nose of the ball hit the ground as he came down with Ike draped on him. Should have been ruled an incomplete pass.
I'm not the only one?
I thought Mikey T. should have thrown the flag. May have been too close to call and potentially we lose a T.O., but, I agree, that ball touched the ground.
Actually, that may be an interesting discussion for another fan post. I think Mike and co. need to do a better job identifying when and when not to throw the red flag. I think they’ve missed on a few that could have altered the course of games. Will have to try and find some video support.

Good point
I know there’ve been several times he should have challenged but never even seemed to consider it.
Is there some weak link in their challenge procedure?
What about the Miami game
where he was going to challenge a call and the refs said don’t bother, we aren’t changing the call? Maybe more of that goes on than we realize, and there’s no sense losing a TO.

And I prefer "Silverback"
because Deebo was a stupid d*ckh**d screw-up, but a silverback is the dominant alpha-male and king of his enviroment.
Big play - Big moment
That play – That moment, My hope at the beginning of that super bowl is that it would a much better played game by the steelers than the last one.Though I was proud the steelers won the last one . It left me with the feeling not as happy as I wanted to be.
After that Play – That moment I never thought of that again. Because I just knew we were going to have a Great Super Bowl Game.
One of the greatest Steeler football moments for me
I went from biting my nails screaming “HOLD ’EM D!” one second, to standing on my couch, clutching and waving the Towel screaming “OMG RUUUUUUUN DEEEBO!!!” and watching our defense give that huge, rumbling train blocking that would make any wide receiver proud….. Then of course watching him laying in the endzone motionless…. my heart skipped more than a few beats hoping he was ok… just a bit “winded”. (ha… understatement) Then I shed a few very happy tears.
That was the opposite of the perfect storm of suck…. It was the perfect storm of Pittsburgh Steeler football.
Suck the Lombardi indeed!
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
I laughed...I cried...I passed out
When Deebo initially intercepted the pass, we erupted, but kind of figured he’d get taken down so the eruption leveled off. As he crossed midfield and a sea of black and gold began to surround him…the eruption was taken to another level…and continued to go up every 10 yards further…
I’ll never forget The Bus on the sideline right there in the endzone goin’ nuts when Jimmy the H was home free.
Bad Andy, Good Pizza.
I wish we had all that on video

That super bowl was awesome
had everything,
so-called controversial calls – check
point in game where outcome is in limbo – check
incredible play – check
furious comeback from underdog team to take the lead – check
legendary last minute TD drive to win the game – check
also defensive closing the game – check
It was 60mins of awesome
Steelers football is 60 mins.
To be honest
it is the only Superbowl I’ve ever watched. (I intend to fix that this year.) But I can’t imagine how it could have been better.

I did the same thing.
At first I thought, “Ok out of bounds, lets go, next play” Suddenly Al Michaels was screaming TD and me and my friend just kind of looked at each other like, “Ya whatever” so we weren’t really all that excited. Then the replays started. Everything after that turned into a blur of happiness.
We increased our offensive production by 1,000 yards but our points by only 3 touchdowns?

I was in the stands a level or so above your nephew. (See my icon/photo.) I was actually there with my own nephew. We saw Tone catch the ball but simply could not believe he was in bounds. Then we saw the ref throw up his hands and all hell broke loose. Man, what a great memory!

Holy Shit...
became my 3 year old daughter’s favorite phrase for an hour after that play.
We were watching the game and as soon as Silverback went on his gallop, I screamed “Holy Shit! Holy Shit! Holy Shit!” the entire way (ignoring my wife’s admonitions to stop). I grabbed my daughter after the touchdown and spun her around the living room on my back. Between giggles and screams, she said “Holy Chit!” several times.
Great memories!

My 4 month old son was scared and crying, my wife was upset but understood. My 2 year old ran into the Living room. I was yelling holy shit . I grabbed my daughter and gave her a big kiss and bear hug. I think i kissed my wife and son too. It was crazy.
And then the TD catch at the end was almost the same celebration, but worse. Beer was spilled, and then my wife was really mad…lol
BEER was spilled?!

and liquid barrier between carpet and padding in my LR.
