Pittsburgh Steelers 30, Miami Dolphins 24 - Post-game celebration and scoreboard watching thread

Willie Parker and Ike Taylor came up big when it mattered in a win desperately needed to keep the Pittsburgh Steelers' dwindling play-off hopes alive. We're needing losses from Baltimore, New York (B) and Denver to make it in. Still, stranger things have happened. For now, I'm celebrating a winning season. Sound off!

plus other teams will have very little film to watch of our defense with troy from this season. 4 games is really not a lot… we could be dangerous

why does denver need to lose?

don’t we win the tie-breaker with the head-to-head victory?

I understand the rules...

…but how could a tiebreaker system be set up when to where a team with the same record will get in over a team that beat it.

by HoustonPA on Jan 3, 2010 4:32 PM EST reply actions

steelers

have proven they are better than DEN on the field…therefore, Houston should have to prove that they are better than DEN one way or another (i.e., division record). And then from there, if Houston did that, then you’d look at the metrics for a PIT/HOU tie-breaker. That seems like the most logical way…

by HoustonPA on Jan 3, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Any head to heads...

should be used as a first stage of the tie breaker b/w 3+ teams. And if they all beat each other (like what happened with Texas, OU, and Texas Tech last year), then you start somewhere else.

by HoustonPA on Jan 3, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

Agree.

But is there even a logical argument otherwise? Am I missing something?

And why the heck would common games be less important than conference record…especially when conference records are influenced heavily by division records and often the teams fighting for the spot are in different divisions?

by HoustonPA on Jan 3, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

I would argue that...

…conference records are not equal criteria b/c the tied teams don’t play the same conference opponents. The only criteria that would be the same would be common games.

No Dixon?

What I don’t understand from this game is the absence of Dennis Dixon after Ben got injured. Burning time off the clock constitutes a strong running game, so why not add another option to let the QB keep a few and run down the clock?

Plus, throwing with a hurt shoulder can easily lead to permanent injury, why risk destroying an investment with 7 years to go?

by brosatriani on Jan 3, 2010 4:42 PM EST reply actions

he went 4 quarters without a pick.
I’m just saying that it makes no sense to let a guy who’s injured throw a ball. I know Ben is one tough son of a bitch, not taking anything away from him, but you do have to look long term.

by brosatriani on Jan 3, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

It's a head injury but he must not be too bad.

According to news reports, they didn’t use a chopper to take him to the hospital; meaning that the injury wasn’t severe enough.

by Billy52 on Jan 3, 2010 4:42 PM EST reply actions

I'm still happy if we don't make it.

I’m not going to bitch or whine. I think today was a solid outing. One that reassured us of our flaws. We’ll know what we want in April.

If for some chance we DO get in. I’ll be buying pitchers for all my Charger friends tonight.

Clean hit & congratulations on sidelines

Hello guys, grats on this victory!

Just wanted to ask, what you guys feel about some teammate congratulating Ike Taylor on his hit?
I think hit was a clean one, but that high-five on sidelines officially moved Steelers a couple of spots up in my hate-list.

So if KC and Oakland come up with wins Cincy gets to make a choice.
If they lose, its Steelers in the first round. If they win its the Jets, which they will get a really decent look at this week.

I think Bengals are going to tank it. Who knows, maybe those two wins they got over the Steelers this year brings them enough confidence to make an effort tonight.

by neverender on Jan 3, 2010 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Good point

If it comes down to Cinci getting to decide who they play, would they rather play the NYJ two weeks in a row, or play the Steelers who they’ve beaten twice that season.

Overall, I say they’d play to win in case they face NE in the post-season.

by tobiathan on Jan 3, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

Bengals are going to play

With a win, they will get Pitt or Houston in the first round; San Diego in the 2nd; and a chance to have a home game in the Conf. Championship. The Jets defense is good enough and the Bengals offense bad enough that they would not want the Jets.

If they get down by 2 or more TDs they will put in the backups.

From what I saw.

The Pats handed Houston the game in the 4th Quarter. When have you ever seen Brady throw a pick like that??

Pat’s defense is poor against teams with good QBs – they gave up 21 in the 4th against Indy; obliterated against the Saints; and now this against Schaub.

Just wanted to get in the playoffs

I doubt this squad could have gone very deep into the playoffs, but it’s hard to defend a SB title if you don’t at least hit the playoffs.

THERE IS NOTHING TO CELEBRATE!!

I personally dont see anything to celebatre finishing 9-7 and out of the POs.
This is actually the worst scenario possible. We were basically the bubble boys (poker anyone?) , and with those last 3 wins, we will probably stick to Arians one more year and we won’t have a good position in the draft. We also didnt try our rookies enough and not much has been fixed anyway despite the victories, so wtf is to celebrate? Do u think the steelers will be hungrier next year by sliping a bit then by getin’ ripped off? No way. I prefer this team to get schooled, have my awfull OC out, a top 15 draft position and my rookies more experienced 1000 times more. With so much shit to fix after that dreadfull 5 loss streak we would never win the SB this year. What the hell is good about finishing 9-7 then? Ridiculous…
See ya in 9 months wankers!

I doubt that he was taking it too seriously if he was hoping for a team that was still in the hunt to lose

I didnt quit in week 14. I just understood after losing 5 games including oakland, kansas and cleveland that extreme measures had to take place and this team had no business going to playoffs with so much to be fixed. Having hope is cute but winning SBs is the only thing that matters in the business, and none of u can possibly believe we would stand a chance going to the SB this season after an absurdly inconsistent regular season. We deserve to be out, and if so, I prefer to go out 6-10 than 9-7! Im so right!

by setherian on Jan 3, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

6-10 would have been good for the 9th draft pick; we will pick 18th with a Jets win or 19th with a Jets loss. I don’t know if that will make much difference with the draft since teams are picking to fill positions after the first few. There are always a few players that stand out that go in the top 10; so it may.
However, the Steeler players coming back in 2010 will be coming back to a winning team that missed the playoffs by 2 tie-breakers (and no losses by more than 7). New players will be joining a team that is 1 year removed from the Super Bowl Champs that just missed the playoffs. The drive to succeed will be back. A 6-10 team will think that going 10-6 and making the playoffs is a good season. Next year’s team will want 13-3 and the division.
All in all, the team will be better off with this finish than a 8 game losing streak.

So you don’t think a winning season is worth anything.? I remember growing up in the 80’s and being 8-8 was a good year, I am sorry you do not feel the same way but every team is always out to beat the champs, though our teams play was not great throughout the year, our key players had career years, and we had some key injuries. Pitt is a great franchise but will not win the superbowl every year nor wil they make the playoffs every year, but by your logic, any of those years they should lay down in order to get better draft picks… I am sorry Mr. Colbert does pretty well with the picks he gets. Or will you disagree? I am sorry I will get off my soapbox, but though we are not in the playoffs I am happy Tomlin got his 3rd winning season in as many years… Good day sir

by NVASteelerFan on Jan 3, 2010 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

I think its quite arguable if Colbert is great with his picks or not. But that is another talk for another time.
I do understand why most here prefer to finnish +.500 then the opposite, I think its great,it says a lot about your character. Thumbs up. The problem is the ego and confort involved does not overcome the fact we will stick to BA one more year, we didnt play most of our rookies enough, we didnt made reasonable changes in approach and we wont have such a good spot on draft day. Basically , the bravato of our ending season wont help us in 10/11 as much as a huge shake up that should actually have started much earlier then week 14. Basically, 9-7 makes u feel better today, but might not make us a better team next season..

Good bye, I am sorry I would rather see my team win than posture for a better draft….. Out of your pick which QB would you have E. Manning, Rivers or Ben??? Remember ben was taken latest… We got Woodley in the 2nd rd and Timmons @ 26 in the first….. Again I trust Colbert. Let Tomlin Win and Colbert draft, they are the ones who know how to make a team not us behind keyboards…

BA will stay!

Get ready for another year of constant irritation towards a dumb and innefective Offense full of arrogancy, egomania and stat freaks , be ready for another year of great stats and poor closings. An year ruled by BA and BB ., not by Tomlin and FO.
My only hope is the Defense will regain dominant status.

but the offense will get a lot of yards…

there is only one way BA offense can become a dominant unit with consistency despite BAs bad situational work (bad calls at critical times) and that is IF we get 2 probowl caliber offensive linemen. Lets say an experienced free agent for the interior and a first round RT for example.

GOOD BYE STEELERS

Last year’s champion, this year’s bums. No one to blame but yourself for that dumb 4 games losing streak. KCs seem like giant upsetters. Only 4 wins but wins against Pittsburgh (Steelers need 1 more victory) and Denver today, knocked both out of the playoffs.
