Jim Wexell: Arians likely to be fired
Whether or not this would be a wise move depends on who the Steelers could get to replace him, but here's a little hope for the many Arians haters out there.

yea really
If we are going to replace the OC, here’s hoping the new guy’s a good one!
Now if only the secondary could play D.
All for it.
Dont let the door hit you Arians.
Maybe the winds of fortune have decided to favor us again. Just in time for the playoffs.
Mea Culpa
I stayed off the “fire arians” bandwagon for the longest time, but it was time to go. Any ideas for who is gonna replace him? Maybe Whipple from Da U wants to come back here, lol
The man may know alot about football but he has no idea about situational football
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: DIck Lebeau, Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Chris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer
"If you give Arians a fullback, he won’t use one. Instead, he insists on using Matt Spaeth, who probably doesn’t cast a shadow because it would require blocking sunlight." Cliff harris is still a punk with some very true words
"New Investors Making Diff Culture Around Here"
If true that line is f***ing scary.
The one thing this team does not need is a different culture

I was kinda worried about that too

Made me choke on my coffee....
…last thing we need is a change in culture involving meddling investors. The culture ain’t broke. Don’t fix it.

Not gonna lie . . .
That was the most interesting story in Wexell’s scoop. What does “change of culture” mean??
If it means “run-first, tough defense, no excuses for mediocrity” then I’m all for it, but truly, when I see that the “new” investors are “making a different culture around here” I can’t help but cringe at the Steelers potentially changing.

Yeah
I seriously doubt the “culture” in question has anything to do with play-calling. I got the same impression that has you cringing.
The Rooneys have learned not to interfere with the coaching staff. The organization seems to value patience. They like to develop talent, not buy it off the shelf. I fear that may change.
BA may still stay because there may not be anyone with any good enough skills that can replace him
I thought BA may go because tomlin in his post game interview that he wanted to integrate logan in the offense using something like a wild-cat like scheme.

Hire Mike Leach
God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...
Leach would'nt come here
we wouldn’t give him the control he craves. Think Oakland
I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
Wouldn't want him....
He’s a head coach type…wanting a seven figure salary.
And his offense is the antithesis of Steeler tradition. He passes too much for the pros. Throws a lot of short passes. Runs on third and two. Passes to set up the run. Spreads the field. Throws a lot of quick bubble screens. Sound familiar, boys and girls? Isn’t that what you all have been screaming to get rid of?
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

Oops...
I meant he passes on third and two. Often from an empty backfield.

That was a joke folks

Let's face it, BA made some crazy play calls
But he wasn’t the reason the Steelers lost to the bottom of the NFL, and he wasn’t the only reason the Steeler’s couldn’t score TD’s in the red zone. If we made the first round of the playoffs then he’d stay, but now I’m not so sure.
That being said, to all the crazies out there — BA being fired will not fix the Steelers offense. Seriously. There is much, much more to it than that.
Charlie Weis?
He’s available. Team with good weapons that needs someone to push the QB to an elite level for years to come.

We have had 3 winning seasons, 2 playoff appearences and 1 SB victory w/BA
Maybe the next guy can’t match that.
It’s entirely possible that the offensive play-calling and execution gets worse with someone new…
We saw how effective BA's offensive was in this his 3rd year
if the defense hadn’t suffered from the loss of four starters(Foote and MacF in free-agency and Troy and Aaron to injury) we might have been dominant like last year.
Even without all those changes we damn near had a good year: we were maybe 5 plays from winning most of those five game we lost.
I see your point, but
We can’t afford to have an OC that doesn’t know how to play ‘’situational football’‘. It’s clear to me that we are a pass first team, but when you have a 4th quarter lead, you have to run the ball to milk the clock, simple. He can’t do that, so we need someone who can use our strenghts to improve our offense.
You mean, you trust Tomlin the second time around?
You sure Ike isn’t reacquainting himself with his fingers, he certainly doesn’t use them for catching. - Brian (DaBolts) on "Face Me Ike"
His hands were tied the first time
The combination of his late hiring, meaning that most potential assistant coaches were already hired elsewhere, and the desire for continuity with the Cowher staff (only one year removed from a Super Bowl victory) gave Tomlin little choice but to promote Arians to OC. This time around, he should be able to pick from a wide pool of candidates. Given the team’s talent level, the Steelers OC job should be very attractive to any candidate that does not have their heart set on being a head coach.
A lot of you have already read this
And for that I thank you. For those that didn’t, I have some ideas for his replacement.

It is situational
I am softening a bit on my “fire Arians” crusade, but the reality is he does not adjust to personnel, or situation. And Red Zone is terrible. Often the TD comes when Ben breaks contain. During the playoffs, watch what other teams do in first and goal. They will run a “rub”, or delay the TE. They might run a draw out of shotgun from the 3. Just watch the successful plays and let me know if you see stuff like that in our play book.
Then, Arians breaks out the shovel pass to Ward. Nice. Where has that been? Or the swing screen to Mendy. Nice. Why now that the season is over?
The defense cost us this year. But if Arians did not have Ben, he would be pretty mediocre. Anyone notice he has never held a job more than 3 years? 8 jobs in 23 years.
Hope the next guy is better.
So our offense was the problem? Really??
by DwightWhite's Missing Tooth on Jan 4, 2010 11:46 AM EST reply actions
No, it was a problem, though. Do you remember when we managed 216 yards and 6 points against the league’s worst defense with our season on the line? Did you watch our offense in 2008 at all? Or 2007?
charity standing orders
I've seen every Steeler game since 1977.
Does Arians make bad calls? Yes. Does every OC? Yes.
Is Ben thriving under his system? Yes Is the offense the reason our defense gives up 4th Quarter leads? No. Do I wish we would run the ball more? Yes.
The league is changing. QB’s dominate this league and Arians and Ben have good rapport. I think a system change puts Ben’s development back at least two years.

500 yards passing
and we win by 1 as time expires. mendenhall is a game breaker, but virtually worthless when trying to hold a lead. it seems BA finally figured that out in the last game of the season.
by run tha effin ball on Jan 4, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions
The offense had to outscore the other team because our defensive backs were shit.
I love running the ball, but a team plays to its strengths. We don’t have an o-line built for running, so we did some passing. Same thing as last year, but better. The difference was the defense.
We are being too reactive here and I fear the Steelers will be as well.

Here's an idea
instead of firing BA outright, I say demote him to QB coach since Ben ‘loves’ him so much. Promote the RB coach to OC, and bring in The Bus or Emmit Smith as RB coach. Just get rid of the current QB coach. (I’m too lazy to look up the names right now)

Don't keep BA because BB likes him
in fact that is the biggest reason we need to ditch BA. Those two are too close and both love the big splashy play FAR too much. Under BA BB has gotten sloppy and has switched into total “gunslinger” or backyard QB mode just “makin’ it happen.” While I love a QB that can turn a broken play into a huge momentum shift (and BB is prob. the best at this in the NFL) it would be nice if he could work on IDing the defensive schemes, blitzes, and coverages and make some more of those timing throws. It seems to me like BB only throws when the WR/TE is already open and doesn’t have a great deal of anticipation of the routes and coverage.
"I believe the game is designed to reward the ones who hit the hardest. If you can't take it, you shouldn't play." Jack Lambert.
Almost everything you mentioned
is on the QB coach, IMO. Stop BA from calling the game, get him focused on developing Ben, and let someone else (RB coach) to call the plays. I hope against hope that we can get away from zone blocking/pass happy, and get back to power blocking and run first.
Mendenhall got over 1k yards with Arians hating the run, and getting away from it when it’s working.

Be careful what you wish for
Im not saying I fullying support BA, but he did win a Super Bowl last year and the offense has shown a big improvement. The reason this team didnt make the playoffs had more to do w/ special teams and defense than it did offense.
What is with not using a Fullback
What is the possible advantage, perceived or otherwise, of what BA does with not relying on a Fullback? Would going back to using one improve on what he can do, or is he really not that good no matter?
I'm betting he thinks
that putting a FB in there on obvious running downs, would project to the D that we are going to run the ball…Go figure, eh? Why the hell did we waste a roster spot on bringing back Carey Davis if he never sees the field?
