Senior Bowl- Draft Prospects

Well.. just left the bitter cold Senior Bowl in Mobile and this is what I got from the game.

- Dan Williams occupied at least 2 blockers each time I saw him.  Good size, good motor.

- Terrence Cody didn't look good at all... barely saw the field.  Too fat.  Made Williams look like a light weight.  He's not worth our first round.

-Javier Arenas looked like a good lock down guy, just lacks size.. would be tough to cover big recievers like Moss or A johnson

-McCluster got ate alive by the defense on most plays... made a few good plays though. Maybe a better bet to return kicks and punts.

- Taylor Mays looked like a good player on the field.  Made a really good read on the interception and he is seriously huge.  He made Myron Rolle look like a mouse.

- Blount is really good... he is a man.

- Tebow looked like a scrub under center, serious QB or H-back project.

- Tony Pike is a giant.. didn't look too bad.

- Michigan's Grahm is a great player, had an awesome game.

- Mardy Gilyard looked really good too despite having poor reviews in Senior Bowl practice.

- Colin Peek ..TE from Bama was my favorite player of the day by far.  I really like the way this guy plays and he seriously looks like a lineman on the field.. love to see him in black and gold.

There are some seriously good prospects coming out this year...thoughts?

The write ups on Gilyard have been spectacular from the game.

Tebow got panned.

I’m thinking either Mays just isn’t a practice guy or needs a strong supporting cast around him because he got hammered this week. Top to bottom…too slow on wideouts, too big to get through traffic…..I’m having second thoughts on him.

Anyone on the o-line stand out as being a brute on the field?

I kept an eye on Mike Johnson

It looks like the south’s line as a whole was a little off key.. understandable though. Mike Johnson is a big body high motor guy. I really like that guy. Colin Peek from Bama was awesome.. my favorite player of the day.

I disagree on Cody

I thought he did himself a lot of help today. Yeah he’s a big unit, but he showed that he had the motor to go play after play.

Agree with you

When Cody was on the field I thought he played well. He’s only going to be a 2-down player anyway so I didn’t see it as a big deal that he wasn’t on the field as much as others. He played well enough to change my opinion to him from not wanting the Steelers to draft him to on the fence.

by Jett on Jan 31, 2010 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

When Cody was in

the North wasn’t able to put together a drive. If they had been able to get that 4th and nothing on the goal-line snapped before the 3rd quarter ended they might’ve scored, but when the quarter ended they were able to send in Cody to defend and they got stuffed.

Cody could stand to lose some flab and put on some more muscle (like pretty much every guy coming out of college) but he’s a beast. I wouldn’t be sad at all if he were snagged by the Steelers.

by 13thieves on Jan 31, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Cody has already dropped

CBS-Sports now have him ranked as 47th best player in the draft which would make him early 2nd round at best.

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Feb 1, 2010 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

I think the Steelers could be better value than Cody at 18, but my point is that I won’t be disappointed to have him. No question in my mind that he can replace Hampton.

by 13thieves on Feb 2, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

Really like Brandon Graham

Steelers need the Woodley clone (Graham)…can play him on the line or in coverage as a LB

If he’s gone, grab Mays…he reminds me of Ronnie Lott

Then there’s also the Aaron Smith look-a-like in Jared Odrick – pick him up after getting one of the two above

by SteelerPokey on Jan 31, 2010 8:44 AM EST reply actions

I love Jared Odrick

He reminds me so much of Aaron Smith. The problem is he may not be around for our pick in the 2nd round.

by Jett on Jan 31, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Mays sucks

Unless you want Roy Williams II in our secondary you’ll stay away from him.

by StoneColdSteel on Jan 31, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Agree on Mays

I’d take him in the middle rounds, but I wouldn’t even think about him in the first two.

How did

Myron Rolle do?
You think we’d be able to steal him in Round 2?

by BlackandGold on Jan 31, 2010 10:02 AM EST reply actions

I'm starting to warm up to some rolle

Smart guy, stays out of trouble, has speed & hands. He would have been a first rounder if he didnt accept his rhodes scholarship. He has good size, everywhere I’ve seen has him listed at 6’2 210. Not the freakish Mays size but who needs that when you have a player with little bust potential especially in the second round. I don’t know who doesn’t like McClain but I say if he is gone, I trade down. If he falls out the top 10, trade up and get him without giving up the 2nd rounder so we can get rolle.

He looked pretty good

He will definitely be there in Round 2, maybe even Round 3 to be honest.

by Jett on Jan 31, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Word on Rolle

is that he’s a 5th rounder, but prior to his year off projected as an 2nd round.

I liked he way he looked

I totally want

to see him in the Black and Gold.

agree

Knew about him…saw him on PTI, and have now read nearly all the stuff about him on the senior bowl WOW Sadly all the press talk will move him from a 4th rounder to a second rounder.

Funny thing while bored at work over the weekend, I noticed that most teams posting on this board that need a safety ( even a back up saftey), they all want him.

by SteelBuckeye on Jan 31, 2010 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

When the dude is close to 400 lbs he better be doing something to occupy blockers. His stock is plummeting..

by MSsteele on Feb 1, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Rolle...

With his character and academics, we can be pretty sure the Bungles and the Ratbirds won’t pick him.

He’d never fit in at either place.

Right..but...

Cody is a liability. I’m telling you.. he’s got serious weight problems and that doesn’t go to well in NFL. I liked Dan Williams for DT. Brandon Grahm had ridiculous athleticism. Rolle has good size but it just amazed me how big Taylor Mays was compared to him.. he was seriously like a DE out there in the secondary. I like the Idea of McClain on the Steelers…highly unlikely but it would be ideal if he dropped somewhere close to us.

by MSsteele on Jan 31, 2010 11:49 AM EST reply actions

Curious what others thought about Jared Odrick?

Seemed to me that he pressured the QB all day but didn’t make any splash plays. He also stood his ground against the run. Against the pass, I thought he always pushed his man back, even though it looked like he was giving up at least 25 pounds to the O linemen. From what I’ve read, Dan Williams and Geno Atkins are getting all the love, but I thought Odrick was solid if not spectacular.

by MelBlunt on Jan 31, 2010 12:19 PM EST reply actions

Totally agree

Like I said above I love him. A clone of a young Aaron Smith. Would be a perfect fit as a 3-4 DE.

by Jett on Jan 31, 2010 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

Ditto

I think he got good reviews from his game. There are so many good DT’s available in this draft, it may be hard for Steelers to pass on one of them in the 1st round. Odrick or Dan Williams would be a good fit for our line.

by SteelerMessican on Feb 1, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Did you watch the game?

Cody was taking up 2 blockers and leaving Dan Williams in 1 on 1 situations more often than not, this whole stigma against him is stupid. I’m not saying he won’t bust, I’m just trying to get people to not write him off so soon!

Cody

I disagree. I was there and just about every play i saw Williams on he was occupied by 2 blockers.. a good thing. Later on in one play he pushed through to make the tackle on the runner for a loss. Cody was huge. He is just too much of a weight liability.. could have a heart attack on the field. Yeah he occupies 2 blockers but good lord when you are 370lbs, I would hope you could at least do that.

by MSsteele on Jan 31, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

Seemed to me as if Cody was the

factor allowing Williams to do his job.
He is a weight liability but he is just way too good and agile at his weight, he seriously looks a better athlete than Hamp is.

yeah..

The jury is still out on him.. I’d like to see his pro-day to see what he looks like in situations.

D. Williams, Weatherspoon, Odrick, Iupati, Graham look like Steelers players to me ...

And I’d be happy with any one of them. However, the best player on the field to me was Graham. You can never have enough pass rushers. Iupati is going to be a stud with a good OL coach. Odrick looked like a good, quick 3-4 DE with size. Weatherspoon looked very active from the ILB position and has plenty of swagga to go with that talent. I saw Iupati and D. Williams lock up a couple of times on some 3rd and shorts and one 4 and 1 and Iupati could not move him off the line of scrimmage. That is what you want in a NT.

This could very well be the year that the Steelers move down. How about this for upgrading the secondary — how about CB Kyle Wilson from Boise State in the 2nd round and then take CB/FS Chris Cook from Virginia in the 3rd round. Cook has safety size at 6’2’’, 217 pounds and CB skills. And if he is a better corner than safety, then move either Gay or Lewis to safety. Thoughts?

by datruth4life on Feb 1, 2010 9:35 AM EST reply actions

Graham would be a good pickup, but I can’t see drafting him in the first. If he falls to the second, we could use the depth.

I’ll have to check out the DB’s you mentioned. I haven’t looked too closely at the “depth” DB’s everyone seems to be talking about. I’d like to see Lewis get a shot at moving to FS, but Gay is too small and too bad a tackler to be a factor there. I think it’s nickelback or bust for him. Based on his size and 40 time, I somewhat expected Lewis to move to FS, but the Steelers haven’t shown any signs of moving him just yet.

Is Weatherspoon too light to fit in the Steeler lineup?

What do you guys think?

My guess is that he’s on the lower fringe of where we’d like to see the ILB weight-wise.

by Steely McSmash on Feb 1, 2010 1:02 PM EST reply actions

No...

Timmons was about 225 when we drafted him, if I remember correctly. He’s close to 240 now, according to what I read preseason. I’ve seen reports of Weatherspoon being between 225 and 240. If he’s on the lower end of the spectrum he’s just going to have to hit the weight room a little bit more in his “redshirt” year on our defense. This was the guy that I came out of the game wanting more than anyone I saw, except for probably Dan Williams.

Timmons weight, etc

Timmons was 234 pounds at the combine, projected initially as an OLB but young enough at the time (20) to expect that he could easily put on 10 pounds, which he has since done. Weatherspoon is about 240. He probably projects best as a 4-3 OLB or perhaps a Tampa 2 type MLB. The critical thing in his scouting report is that he is better in pursuit and in space than shedding blocks and making plays in the box. I’m not a fan of him as a Steeler ILB. Daryl Washington, who weighed in at 226 for the Senior Bowl, is probably too small to play ILB for the Steelers. Could be great 4-3 weakside linebacker a la Derrick Brooks.

Didn't watch the game, but

here’s some notable guys from around the web:

Cam Thomas – Heard some mixed reports about him, but he’s big, strong, and quick. Possibly some technique issues, but with some coaching, he could grow into a very good nose tackle. Worth a serious look in the second if he’s available.

Dexter McCluster – He’s either the next Willie Reid or DeSean Jackson. I have a feeling that he’s going to test very well and get drafted early in the second, and even if he doesn’t he wouldn’t be a good fit for the Steelers before round 3. Nevertheless, he’s a hell of an athlete and an interesting guy to keep an eye on.

Legarrette Blount – the best RB by several accounts, but there’s some character concerns. He’s a big physical guy with good feet (insert comparison to Bettis here) who runs with authority and even blocks well. The fight he got into raises some concerns, but Chris Kemoeatu reminds us that the Steelers don’t let on-field skirmishes preclude any draft consideration. Could go anywhere in the draft after round 1.

Joique Bell – Another big back with good feet. Hugely productive in small school ball. Many feared he’d look slow against better competition, but he played well and fit in. Certainly a guy to consider after round 3.

Brandon Lang – Could be a good OLB pickup in the 3rd or 4th. As far a OLB types go, he’s a bit more Joey Porter than James Harrison, which might actually complement our current duo nicely. We have a serious need for some depth at the position.

I'm not sure

Blount would get a chance to play here, given that incident. I doubt they’d risk it, even though he does appear to be a good player.

but I think if you get him in a place like Pittsburgh with a strong veteran locker room

he will have a better chance to succeed
