Same. He never really did anything to make me hate him, but his choice to never back down from Ray in those years made me hate him. Ravens-Titans used to be just like Ravens-Steelers. I would love it if Titans were in this division.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Feb 1, 2010 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

True dat-

I was stunned when the Titans were shifted to the South. I’d have liked to see the AFCN as BAL, PIT, CLE and TEN….but I can see why it was done the way it was.

I once saw Eddie George walking thru the Promenade in Santa Monica back in 2004…the guy was gigantic. The fact that any man could tackle him alone still amazes me.

breathe in deep feel your heart beat, just to know that life's worth livin'. feel your feet on the earth, better love it while it's still here spinnin'.

Ending Eddie

I think Big Casey Hampton get some due on ending Eddie George career. In the Joe Nedney game, AFC divisional in Jan. 2003 Big Snack blew up a play, knocked Eddie out cold on impact, Eddie was sleeping and lost the ball as he fell to the ground, never the same again!!!

Favorite all-time Steeler: From my days of living, Hines Ward. The definition of a Steeler. Although it will always be Jack Lambert who I think of first when anyone says Pittsburgh Steelers

Best Steeler memory:

A lot would say either of the Superbowls, but on further review, I think that the 2005 AFC Divisional Game versus the Indianapolis Colts was THE game of that playoff run. We took it to the “invincible” Colts that game, and it was a classic.

I would say that was the most satisfying memories, but the Superbowls are forever my favourite days

what did you do in the sidelines?

by PCISteeler on Feb 1, 2010 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Funny

I was an assistant basketball coach at Robert Morris College in Pittsburgh and our equipment guy landed the same job with the Steelers. He knew I was a big Steelers fan and when they go on the road, they can bring their own help or get guys from the home team. Once he told me that, I was in for sure.

We helped set up the locker room the night before and on game days and during the game we did “ball boy” stuff. I usually shagged punts for Josh Miller and Jeff Reed (both great guys) During the game, I was told to hold Bettis helmet when he was off the field and hold his hat when he was in the game and give it to him as soon as he came off. I LOVED the Bus, he was first class all the way. It was really neat to be around those guys. The Bus would know me today if we ran into each other on the street. At the time (1998) I just had my first born son and of course I got him a toddler 36 Jersey and Bus signed it for him and its been in a ziploc bag ever since. I will be in Canton when he goes into the HOF.

Great memories.

That would be Ben’s victory over the Cowboys in 2004. The whole family was together at my grandmother’s house in Florida, she had just passed away. We were going through old photos and sentimental items together, and drinking martinis like water, and watching Ben pull out a tough one. My dad said, “he (Ben) might just be the real deal.” We should all be so lucky to have the Steelers win at our wake.

The Ravens became a team in what, 96? So you were 8. What’d you do for the first 8 years of your life? Spare me the “you can only be a team if you are from that city” bull crap. Especially, on a blog full of fanatics who clearly did not just start watching football.

and Idaho doesn’t have a Football team. Broncos are the closest, but I hated Elway too. I made a bet with a cowboy’s fan on Superbowl 13. Didn’t know who the Steelers were, but I hated this kid and his cowboys so I bet him $10. I was ten years old at the time and in 1979 $10 buck was a lot of money to a ten year old. The amazing thing was that the kid paid and I’ve been a fan ever since! Best bet I ever made.

You may remember Arn, the city was in an uproar after Ray Seals cousin was murdered?

you know, DWB, and guy was killed by the police. The kids were just surprising people everywhere. They asked me whats up, seemed to be cool, and then next thing I know, 2 shots to the face, and then they took off. It was all I could do to not smash back with my skateboard, but I’m not a violent one. :/ I figured it was karma and left it alone.

by SteelersVT on Feb 4, 2010 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

I remember when that happened

I witnessed a lot of other racially charged moments in Pittsburgh as well. I will reserve my thoughts on the SW Pa. area because I get in fights with my own family over it all the time. Anyhow… I was never one to be a part of it (racially charged incidents).

As I said before, I was victim of plenty of that stuff in SW Ohio as a kid and vowed not to allow it to make me bitter or even be the agressor when I moved to D.C. and was in a majority.

Also, I am sorry to hear that a couple ignorant people chose to show their ignorance by thinking you were part of the problem when they in fact are part of the problem. That was not karma…..unless you tell racist jokes! just kidding…..wait maybe not….

Donnie Shell explodes full speed into the backfield to hit Earl Campbell (on a sweep) with everything he’s got; he knocks Campbell backwards (sprawling) and the ball comes out. Hardest damned hit I’ve ever seen on the gridiron. You could hear the impact clear up in Peanut Heaven. If anyone has a link to the old footage, I’d love to see that play again.

PS: I was at the Immaculate Reception game at Three Rivers, but almost nobody in the stadium knew how the heck Franco got the ball until they drove home and watched the replays.

With you, Billy..

Almost your age, non-profit exec as well……was at the IR game, too, and had the same remembrance. In my case, it was my brother, seated beside me, grabbing me, screaming “He’s got it; he’s got it!!” I turned my head from the spot of the collision to see Franco running down the sideline.

Cause the cold wasn’t part of my memory. Here’s my “cold games”
*’75 AFCCG v. Oakland
*94 Div. Playoff v. Browns
*95 Div. Playoff v. Bills (the beer vendor you always see took off his shirt, poured a beer over his own head to ignite the crowd when Buffalo narrowed the margin to 5…it worked)
*’04 AFCCG (coldest ever)

Do well remember the 70 degree New Year’s Eve day when Steelers lost ’72 AFCCG to Miami

Jack Ham

I loved Lambert and some of the other great Steeler LBs, of course, but if you watch film of #59, you’re gonna see a guy who nearly always was in exactly the right position to make the play. He absolutely destroyed sweep plays on his side. Ham was the closest to being the perfect LB of any player I’ve seen. And this is taking nothing away from the great Jack Lambert.

by Billy52 on Feb 2, 2010 8:30 AM EST up reply actions

Ham...

Never outta position, don’t remember him ever missing a tackle…..exceptional in pass coverage. Most technically proficient linebacker

No doubt Ham was great

and probably better overall than Lambert but to me Lambert just epitomizes Steeler football.

by DarinS on Feb 2, 2010 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Not to forget Russell

IIRC Russell was the older of that trio of LBs. I wonder how much of an effect playing with him had on the development of the other two. Was there any mentoring going on?

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Feb 2, 2010 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Can't forget anyone on that defense or team for that matter

White, Holmes, Greene, Greenwood, Russell, Ham, Lambert, Blount, Wagner, Edwards(later Shell), Thomas(maybe not as well known but still good). Gives me goosebumps just looking at that line-up, flip the coin and do the same thing with the offense and it just makes you go, man, what a great team.

fave players

I’m not big on fave players, but I there are a few highlights with these guys:
*Hampton…..his sack in SBXL, where he flicked the Seatttle o-lineman aside with one arm like the guy was a flea. Then, his sack of Matt Cassell in ’08, after he had been flagged for holding. His reaction to the sack was exactly the same as his reaction to the hold.

*Wasn’t so much Skippy, but Tomlin saying, after the Baltimore OT game ‘of ’08, about Skippy…"You can’t freeze a psychopath." Other than the Chicago game last year, guy’s been money throughout his career.

It was snowing like crazy in Pittsburgh

for a while that night after the game. I took a ton of pictures. Will have to see if I can get a gallery on here somehow.

One of the funny parts was people falling down all around the place after they cleared the streets. I saved one dude from biting the dust and he kept huggin’ on me and thanking me! Felt bad for this one girl. She bit the dust hard on one of the back streets and hurt her back real bad. They couldn’t move her and it was freezing outside. Not sure how that turned out for her.

That was also the weekend that the guy in the room across the hall from us in the hotel killed himself. True story.

on the people falling down. We walked up to one street corner, started talking to somebody in a small crowd and just bit the pavement on a nasty patch of ice. Remember, I’ve only been a football fan since the end of last year… But back in the dark days (say, two + years ago) when I didn’t understand football, I saw a bit of a game in which Troy actually more or less jumped over three guys coming at him. I was so impressed – that really caught my attention and helped me realize that football was about athleticism rather than just pounding people. I expect that some of you are wondering “what’s wrong with just pounding people?” I can’t explain…

Play Football?: sadly no, im too skinny.

Dream Position: when i play with friends im usually a cornerback, dont want to brag but i’ve shut down some guys who have about 3-4 inches on me. my one good skill on defense haha. i’d also love to be a scout for a team someday

Favorite Steeler: I really became a Steeler fan because i used to watch football with my uncle who lives in pittsburgh, that was about the time ben came into the league and i’ve always loved how he plays. but lamarr woodley and troy are high up there right now.

Favorite all time Steeler: Always loved hearing stories about Jack Lambert, he embodies what the Steelers were/ always will (hopefully… damn you BA) be.

Best Steeler Memory: gotta be Harrison’s INT return last year. it was just like. thank god he saved the touchdown! oh… oh damn he’s still running… OH MY GOD HE SCORED!!!! i knew we’d win after that, even after Fitz’s shenanigans.

Name: James Parson

Age: 25

Occupation: System Analyst

Place of Residency Baltimore,MD

Did you play football, if so what position/positions: No

What position whould be your dream position: Linebacker

Now the Steeler Specific question

Favorite current Steeler: Big Ben Alot of my friends tell me I look like him

Favorite all-time Steeler: Jack Lambert

Best Steeler memory: Since I am young I would have say Big Ben doing the six shooter thing in the AFC championship vs Denver. I thought what a big dork. I would also have to say any run by the Bus.

Did you play football, if so what position/positions: I played the line, mainly center from pee-wee up & including 9th grade. Until i lost a lot of weight and was too small to play the only position i knew how to play (was the shortest person on my 9th grade team but started more than half the games on the line).

What position whould be your dream position: Capologist…or something like what Khan does. As for a real position, would’ve loved playing TE or safety.

Favorite current Steeler: Hines ward

Now the Steeler Specific question

Favorite current Steeler: Ward, Troy, or Woodley

Favorite all-time Steeler: Always loved Levon Kirkland, Jason Gildon, Greg Lloyd, and Carnell Lake, but gonna go with Rod Woodson.

Best Steeler memory: Ravens vs. Steelers November 5, 2007 on Monday night. Final score 38-7. The 75th anniversary team was in Pittsburgh and Harrison had his coming out party. He recorded 10 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and an INT and blew up Ed Reed. Overall, our defense held them to 104 total yards. Big Ben tosses 5 TDs in the first half and this was the same game the Hines destroyed Ed Reed.

Now the Steeler Specific question

Favorite current Steeler: Woodley, he was a beast in college, when my friend asked me why the Steelers drafted a LB in the second I told him it was because he was better than the guy they drafted first. I meant it. I’m gonna give some love to Ben, he and Bradshaw seem to be ignored a lot and I love a big dumb QB. Football players first, pretty boys second.

Favorite all-time Steeler: Rod Woodson

Best Steeler memory: Hines Ward blowing up Ray Lewis on a block. Caught him in the ear and sprung Bettis, it was beautiful, I loved that play. My other favorite is Lloyd putting Favre on pain killers. I watched that game and was jumping up and down when he Bounced three yards on the turf. I have this uncontrollable hatred of most QB’s.

Since Arn's answer is a bit cryptic

I’ll tell you what his 2nd statement (the No, religion is man-made) means to me, since I endorse it as well. (I’m not presuming to speak for Arn…) There are a multiplicity of religions, since mankind seems determined to create them, and all of them are to one extent or another a method or system of doing enough things, in the prescribed way, to placate the god or gods that one is most worried about. In other words, it is a way that you can work yourself into whatever constitutes heaven in your system, even, if like most of the Buddhist sects, for instance, heaven is essentially non-being. By contrast, I believe that God made a way that screwed-up people like me can meet with him. It’s nothing I can do – it’s all about what he did. No religious system or belief, mine included, can be absolutely proven in a “scientific” fashion. Then again, neither can many “scientific” propositions, including the philosophical belief that a true picture of the universe can be obtained through scientific methods. One can only look for a preponderance of evidence. I hope that helps…

By that sentiment would it not discredit the Bible

as the Bible is part of the man-made religion of Christianity? It doesn’t seem to make apparent sense to me to say that religion is man-made (which I understand perfectly) and then use the Bible, the most man-made part of the religion? Compiled and edited by a bunch of romans after Christ was dead

I'm using your own words, but at this point it seems like an excersize purely in semantics.

You say religion is man-made. Christianity is indeed a religion, so by that logic, it is man-made. The “guide” if you will, to Christianity, the religion, is the Bible. Written by man, compiled by men, edited by men. So how is the Bible not man-made, considering the fact its a main part of a man-made religion?

The Bible and religion are different, Religion is a set of social guidelines and rules, the Bible is a religious text. Religion can be based on the Bible, but the Bible and religion are separate.

Just like religious faith and religion are different, to believe in a god does not require following someone’s interpretation of what that god wants you to do.

by Phantaskippy on Feb 5, 2010 2:42 AM EST up reply actions

It all depends

on whether you define “Christianity” as a relationship or a religion – or, perhaps more accurately, whether one’s personal version of Christianity is a relationship or a set of stuff to do. A religious structure has been built onto the basics – people can’t seem to help themselves. But one doesn’t have to subscribe to that structure to believe in the basics.

The Bible is in a different category, IF it is correct in what it says about itself. Either it is true or it isn’t – the claims it makes are too definite to allow for much middle ground. If it is true, it isn’t part of the religious system, because it is directly inspired by God. If it isn’t, it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on, unless you are a fan of rather dreary mythology punctuated with stories about a bunch of unsatisfactory people.

by Rebecca Rollett on Feb 4, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

I view Christianity as a religion, a set of things you must do in order to get into the pearly white gates,

although I do know many people who consider it merely a relationship with God. I’ve read many pieces supposing that the Bible is merely just a piece of literature with astrological signs and parallels. It seems rather convincing when you compare the figure of Christ to other figures of his statures throughout other religions hundreds of thousands of years before his story was even thought up. The being born on Dec 25th to a virgin mother and the three kings etc etc are all evident in many other religious figures’ history

One can never find

a 100% certain answer. If you could, there would be no debate about it, and belief would not be a matter of choice but of necessity. I think that if you maintain an open mind, and actually want to find an answer, you can find enough of one to make a reasoned decision.

After all, if you have two directly contradictory theories then there are only 2 possibilities – one of them is right, or neither of them are right. Given that the vast population of man throughout the ages has believed in some sort of supreme deity, even when it was very dangerous to do so, it seems worth keeping an open mind…

Well, actually there weren't religions

hundreds of thousands of years before the Bible began to be written, because I believe it is fairly well established anthropologically that evidence of religious practices only began appearing somewhere around fifty thousand years ago, and writing of any kind only started appearing definitely less than ten thousand years ago (depending on what you count as writing.) Yes, there are other versions of the Christian story, but the Christian version has a fair amount of verifiable history behind it. And yes, the Epic of Gilgamesh has certain similarities to the books of Moses, but there are even more significant differences.

I don’t know that this is the place for a study of comparative religion, so I’ll just admit that if the basic premise of Christianity (man screwed things up, God made them right) doesn’t resonate with you, then the details are never going to make sense. I also want to say that if some Christian or other has been really hurtful to you, I’m very sorry. (Not that I’m implying that’s the case, just that it frequently happens. Christians are still humans, some worse than others, and Lord knows a lot of appalling things have been said and done in the name of Christ…)

The reason dates overlap is new religions simply take the dates of other religions and replace them when they convert people. Our current calendar of christian holidays is a rehash of other holidays with different explanations. True Biblical Holidays are found in the Old Testament when God kept telling the Israelites to have parties and the Israelites didn’t want to.

Almost everything contains some truth, different perspectives on a similar or single event will lead to very different historical accounts that then evolve through an oral tradition of storytellers and soon you end up with very different sounding stories about a similar or single event.

It's not just you. Reminds me of a joke that I was really surprised to be mostly true.. :(

A father and his 10 year old son walk into a drug store and they happen upon a big display of condoms. The son asks his father why there are so many different boxes of condoms.

The father replies, "Well, you see that 3 pack? That’s for when you’re in high school. You have 2 for Friday and one for Saturday.

“What’s the 6 pack for?” The father replies, “well that’s for when you are in college. You have 2 for Friday night, 2 for Saturday night and 2 for Sunday morning.”

“What’s the 12 pack for?” the son asks. “That’s for when you’re married,” the father tells him. “you have 1 for January, 1 for February, 1 for March…..”

No wonder I feel at home here

I’m almost always surrounded by teenagers. They always want to come to my house and eat my food. They think I’m lonely or something. Like I need them to hang around. I have to tell them to leave or they’ll try to spend the night in my basement. I love them but gee whiz…..

Teenagers are great, aren't they

(other than the ‘eat your food’ part, which gets expensive.) When my kids were little I was dreading having teenagers, but I loved it. I think part of the secret was that I embarrassed my kids in public (mostly by being myself) on a regular basis when they were small, so that they were used to it when they were teenagers and didn’t mind being seen with me…

Which brings up another good

acrollet story. We had a storage room with a padlock on it, and that’s where I kept the chocolate chips, because otherwise I would never have any when baking time rolled around. The kids confessed in later years that they would take the door off the hinges, get in, get a small handful of chocolate chips (because they figured I would notice if they took too many,) and put the door back on. I think that displays good critical thinking skills all around, and the ingenuity that they developed has served them well. So in other words, don’t bet the ranch that it will protect the good stuff…

Did you play football, if so what position/positions: DNP

What position would be your dream position: Head Coach

Favorite current Steeler: Tie – Mike Wallace/ Woodley

Favorite all-time Steeler: Mean Joe Greene

Best Steeler memory: 1) Shouting PICK SIX to a Cardinal fan right before it happened in SB XL III when he was shouting TD CARDS. Then having 35 people stare at me as I yelled SILVERBACK, GO, RUN, getting 30 inches of vertical at the same time as shedding some serious man tears<> 2.) Watching the Steelers beat Baltimore/Dallas…always a pleasure. 3.) Watching the 70s team play in Three RIvers. 4.) Meeting Steelers fans across the continent no matter where I go.

Worst Steeler Memory: 1.) Watching Woodson leave in Free Agency – dumbest move ever. 2.) Most of the 80s. 3.) Neil O’Donnell’s chundering 1995 SB away. 4.) The 4th quarter defense this year.

Best Steeler memory: The drive home with my step-dad in 1978 after the Steelers beat his team, the Bills, in Buffalo. The whole ride home all I could talk about was that “yellow and black team.”

“No, son, they they’re not. They got lucky today.”
“Nuh-uh, dad, they were super fast and big too. Ferguson couldn’t do anything today.” We’re Bills fans son."
“Not anymore, dad!”
NOT EVER AGAIN! It got even sweeter when I learned I was from about an hour+ from the ’burgh! And later moved back to the Penn-Ohio line and met—and still have a great relationship with—my “real” dad… a BROWNS fan. My poor dads!

I pretty much think of them as future mothers and wives. I feel a duty to set an example of what they should expect from a man. When I look at it that way…I picture them as daughters or sisters. For some reason that doesn’t translate to women on TV.

thinking of them as my daughter helps alot.

I think that the mothers that dress their daughters up as sluts

should be prosecuted. And for that matter, the clothes manufacturers that are making stuff that looks like you could wear it to your Future Streetwalkers of America meeting – for 8 year olds! – should be shot. Yes, I know they would claim that they are making what people want, but if that’s about all you can find, what are you supposed to do?

god help her if I catch any type of that clothing in her possession. I’m just glad Mrs. Fever is not a girlie-girl, so even if we do have a girl, she’ll probably be tomboy-ish anyway, so…

Yes, I do.

If a woman doesn’t respect herself, why should she expect a man to respect her? But at least she presumably knows what she’s doing. How much worse is it to dress one’s daughter that way (or allow her to dress that way), when she is too young to understand what she is saying about herself.

And no, I don’t excuse rape under any circumstances. But if you don’t want to get eaten by sharks, then it only makes sense to not drape yourself in bait.

Better late than never

Time and patience has been at an all-time low recently but the rebound has begun! What a fun thread! Ok, here goes:

Name: Annette
Age: 45
Occupation: Veterinary Practice Manager
Location: Nashville (currently)
Didn’t play football… (obvious reasons) and wasn’t into the Powder Puff thing. Softball, volleyball, tennis and racquetball were my athletics.
Dream Position: Loaded question. I’m taking the 5th thanks.
Favorite Current Steeler: Heath (Offense) Everyone (Defense)
Favorite All-Time Steeler: Rocky Blier (courage, courage, courage)

Best Steeler Memory: I’ll never forget Jerome Bettis after losing the AFCC (Hines crying because he really wanted so badly to see Jerome get a shot at a SB) and KNOWING that if he comes back, it will be with a substantial pay-cut and very limited on-field play situations…… yet…. He wanted that ring and he knew it was Pittsburgh that was going to be where it would happen. He put his ego on the back burner and came back. His actions typify what being a Steeler is about to me. Team first; individuals a distant second. I couldn’t have been happier to see Jerome holding the Lombardi up in Detroit.

I’m always glad to see hard work and determination be rewarded. That whole team worked their butts off getting to Detroit; and I believe wholeheartedly that they wanted it for Jerome as much as they wanted it for themselves.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen my son in person just yet, but it’s all good. He’s home and doing well!

they’ll wait till I’m down for that…annual reviews are coming up. As long as “time logged on BTSC” isn’t part of the conversation, I may still have a joby

By the way

Do you get any free Universal Sudios/Islands of Adventure passes? :) Just kidding Yeah I’m still an amusement park junkie. “The Simpson’s” at Universal and “Spiderman” at Islands odfAdventure are awesome!

I have several friends that work there

Depends on the situation, at the least I can get employee comp. passes for around $25. That is by FAR my favorite park down here, and getting bombed at City Walk, although expensive, can be fun too.

Yep

That’s always one of my stops when I go to Orlando. I also like to stop by B.B. King’s.

Best Steeler Memory: Knocking the #1 item off of my sports bucket list this year – got to attend my first pro game -always wanted to see the Steelers at Hines Field, unfortunatly it was the Oakland game but the experiance of being there and being part of the Nation way overshadows the loss – losing to the Radiers still sucked though!!

What position whould be your dream position: WR

Now the Steeler Specific question

Favorite current Steeler: Woodley

Favorite all-time Steeler: Bettis

Best Steeler memory:
There are so many but I’ll take the one that popped in my head first: Bettis plowing over Urlacher in the driving snow for a touchdown. The first of many must wins in 2005.

I was born in Beckley, WV in ‘71 so the Steelers were definitely the team to root for. My older brother helped me out as I was pretty young for their first Super Bowl victory but remember Super Bowl XIII and XIV pretty well. I’ve been a big fan every since.

The 80’s were a rough decade…boy did I get sick of seeing the 49’ers. Thank goodness for Louis Lipps! I watched what seems like a thousand 6-3 (final score) AFC Central games when I could… depending on if we could move the antenna on top of the house to get a decent reception. I loved the ’89 season…except of course for the heartbreak of the Broncos loss.

I’m a big Cowher fan and love what he did with the team during his stay. I miss him…there, I said it. Too many awesome players to list and grea
