Who is in charge?
Does MT have any balls or is BB running the show?
by Steeler Nation VA on Jan 8, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions
Of course MT is in charge...
… as MT was saying all along he asked players in his office to talk about the season. When he was talking to Big Ben, QB lobbied for Arians. What quaterback wouldn’t?
Remember Manning and Moore saga this offseason? One sentence out of Peyton Manning’s mouth and all was set in Indy…
and Ben’s been a major component in 2 super bowl wins. He deserves the same respect, if not more.

Ben Deserves Respect, Buuuut...
it should only go so far.
Any player will ALWAYS stand up for their coach, even if they are wrong. Ben is wrong in this situation.
Anyway, Colbert, Tomlin and Rooney will overrule Ben if that’s the right decision. I have full faith in the Steelers’ front offices.

I'm sorry, I just do not believe this is true
I want to know the source. I want to talk to the source face to face. I want to know how the source found this out and what his relationship is to any of these players.
Of course, that is never going to happen but then, and only then, will I believe any of this crap. ESPECIALLY because I heard it from Florio first.

Yeah..
I love Wexell and all the stuff he has done all year, but this whole BA post season stuff has been an ‘S’ storm. I get his tweets sent to my phone and I think he was in a bout 5 “twitter fights” trying to defend this whole flip-flop. To me, it sounds like he is just trying to cover his ass now with this and all the tweets he sent out last night.

When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Ben has excelled under Arians and, it need to be said, loves the guy. He golfs with Arians during the offseason but, as far as I’ve heard, doesn’t golf with any members of his team.
Ben’s won 2 SB’s, been to a pro bowl and will probably be heading to one this year (since either Manning or Rivers or Brady will almost assuredly be playing in the SB this year). The team’s invested a 100 million 10 year contract in him. Ultimately if your franchise QB isn’t happy with the offense he’s in and that reflects in poor or half-hearted play, it doesn’t matter who your OC is – it’s not gonna get done.
Allt hat is to say that Ben loves the way Arian’s offense works and has enough pull with the organization to see that Arians AT LEAST finishes out his current contract.
Not to mention, Wexell is usually reliable.
by BluegrassSteeler on Jan 8, 2010 12:53 PM EST reply actions
yea two very good points
Ben has to love Arians. Of course he wants to pass the ball all the time, he’s a QB. He’s also putting up franchise records under the guy.
Wexell is arguably the best Steelers beat writer out there, and a definitive BA hater. If he puts something like this out there, you better believe it’s a fact.
Mostly agreed, but...
If Wexell’s a “definitive BA hater”, wouldn’t he be more likely to report negative things about Arians, like how Tomlin originally wanted to fire him, whether or not they’re true?
I don’t think Wexell’s lying, but if he isn’t objective, it stands to reason that his reporting might not be as well.
I’d be impressed if you could point me to an objective reporter in all of sports. Anyway, that is a very astute point. I really can’t make heads or tails of this mess.

I don't know if Ben's relationship with BA is so great
has anyone noticed when they show Ben on the sideline 95% of the time he’s off to the far far side all by himself just kinda standing there like “man… guys get paid to play defense…? i need my crown when i’m off the field ball boy. get to it.” the more i hear of him the less I like his ’tude. Tomlin needs to slap him silly
That may very well be the case
but what the heck kind of stupid reporting is this? I like Wexell. Reading his book in fact. BUT this kind of reporting is really reaching. Wexell can’t confirm this. Why report it? Stir the pot? Irresponsible journalism.

If your day job is a beat writer...
I’d say it is reporting, to an extent. That is, if he posts things on Twitter that aren’t true, he’ll be held accountable (even though Twitter is much more informal). Tweeting is faster than writing a story, and allows for faster responses, but with the caveat that there’s less verification for what gets posted.

you are right to an extent
I don’t follow Wexell or anything but I wonder if everything he tweets is “official” Steelers related news or if he also uses it “socially.” If he uses it for both than I’d definitely say it’s a grey area.
I don’t think his twitter account is like an official organ of Steel City Insider or anything. Wexell’s actually great on twitter – he’ll respond to most reasonable questions about the team, what he thinks about draft prospects, etc.

So what?
We haven’t won a SB for 26yrs without BB…BA has one more year on his current contract, so if he screws up, again, he’s gone..I don’t really have a problem with BB calling some shots..Think Manning don’t call shots in Indy? Or, Brady in New England? I have issues with BA, empty backfield, etc, etc, but, he does have one more year on his conttract and he will be gone..
Any truth...
that Tomlin was upset that BB changed the call at the line TOO much?
I am not sure you can compare Manning and Brady to BB as far as audibles/changing the play, my impression is that he’s not quite as bright (or quick mentally) as those two (close, but not quite is my estimate)…not to say BB has to be a genius to be successful, but restraint is useful sometimes. Like making a soup and you keep adding things to improve the taste and you just end up making it worse.

with a better play-caller and less of an ego at OC Ben gets his numbers AND more wins. Sure we need help on D and ST’s but this offense could have carried this team further IMO.
The Whiz made The Ben *work*
The Ben NO like WORK!
if this is true this really concerns me
I have stated many times in different comments or blogs that if Arians goes it sends a mesaage to BB since part of the problem seems to be he and BA are too chummy. I have also stated that it seemed like Hines was saying something much deeper when he made those comments. I have wondered whether the players view this relationship as too chummy too. And, it has led to some resentment and views that BB has too much power.
I think thi sis bad. But….will trust that Tomlin knows what’s right.
Clearly there is a ton of resentment
between Ben and his mates since everyone put up such lousy numbers this year.

I obviously don't know what goes on in the locker room.
Just seemed like Hines was getting at something. Like what he was saying wasn’t really what he meant. But, he was pissed and was venting. Then I read Harrison’s comments about people into their own goals and not the teams and can’t help but wonder if BB was both of their targets.
By the way, I cannot see how BB wants to do anything but win games. he is a gamer and a leadre for sure.
But maybe the wrestling bullshit and the Shaq thing isn’t sitting well with some players?
Something was wrong this yr. Something more then the fact that the D sucked.
Well, things can’t be too bad between Ben and the rest of the locker room. They did vote him MVP after all.

Sometimes I wonder what really is the problem
Maybe BA is not that bad of a coordinator as we think. Maybe, he does design some swell plays and calls them, too but Ben’s ego over-rides that?
Who knows, maybe BA might be calling run plays on 3rd and short but it might be Ben who wants to be a super man and insisting on going deep. We all know Ben loves to throw those huge bombs.
Maybe, controlling Ben’s leash might be a bigger priority in 2010 than improving BA’s red zone play calling.

Han, either way, Tomlin is responsible for BA and Big Ben ...
It’s on him to control HIS team.
speaking of Ben's bombs
I think he is a C- as a deep thrower. For god’s sakes BB. When wallace gets deep please throw it 10 yards ahead and let him run it down.
Well
He usually is already shedding defenders once Wallace has a few steps on his man. Then Ben finds room, and puts all he can into getting it to fast Mike. Mike then has to hope to have beat his man enough to slow down and wait for the ball. But yes, if there’s a match up where Wallace can burn his man with certainty, someone needs to draw up a quick bomb release. Air it out hard and early

What a disaster this message sends to the team.
Last I checked, BB was an employee. I understand that you would like to keep the ‘big earners’ happy, however, he has no right to step in and drive a decision like this.
1) It tells the rest of the team who is making the calls. Think Coach T lost a little this year with being chummy-chummy with the players? Well, it now cost some repsect with the fans because it tells me Coach T is not necessarily calling the shots.
2) The rest of the team is now clearly seeing another level of management here; they’re looking up at BB too. How about the O-line guys who didn’t want to lose Coach Z? Think they feel like shit now since BB got to keep “his” coach, and collectively the O-line didn’t get a say?
3) How much indebted does BA become to BB? Where is the fine line going to be marked between coach and player, and who’s in charge?
This is a bad precedent (sp?), and I am not happy at all. Regardless if I liked BA or not, the QB is a player, not an owner. He does NOT get the right to have this much pull. I’m sorry to say that I’ve lost a little respect for both BB and Coach T today and that’s a real shame.
I’m disturbed by one player having so much sway with the coaches/owners too. But I just think this is what’s going to (increasingly) happen in a QB oriented league. Teams know that a franchise QB is the single greatest key to sustained success now and they’ll go to great lengths to get their hands on one. And, when they have one, they’ll do whatever they can do to keep them happy.
Jay Cutler can force his way out of Denver when Marshall couldn’t (or Chad Ochocino couldn’t for the Bengels), Peyton Manning can more or less make his FO resign Jeff Saturday and hire Tom Moore under a different capacity, and Ben is gonna have a say in how and who runs the offense now.
Ah, brave new world with such sights…
by BluegrassSteeler on Jan 8, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions
Possibly a better way to phrase it would be, "such SLIGHTS."
I guess I’m just not ready to move into this brave new world. I have to admit that I love the stats – not the empty back field – and the long passes. Although I thought the bombs were supposed to keep the safeties honest and out of the box so we could run the ball.
And for all those fancy stats, we won fewer games, and only scored 21 more points. Red Zone O sucked, so we saw major improvements between the 20’s but not much inside the 20’s. Fat lot of good the fancy stats did, huh?
Give me the old way with all of the wins, thank you very much.
True about games won, but I guess the overall point is that we’re really “in” any game that Ben is healthy for; we always have (probably more than) a fighting chance. It’s more about the importance of the position in the contempoary NFL than about Ben in particular.
After all, if Favre played any other position and wanted to skip training camp and string his suitor along like he did Minny, they’d tell him to go to hell. Because he’s a great QB they’ll accept him with open arms.
by BluegrassSteeler on Jan 8, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions
I love him as my QB.
But it stops there. He obviously makes some very questionable choices in his life off the field, so what makes us think he’s qualified to make coaching decisions?
Peyton Manning is the cream of the crop. But for all of those gawdy stats, he has fewer rings than Ben. He shouldn’t be making coaching calls yet either.
Oh Favre....
Piece of crap in my book. Man can play with the best no doubt. He’s also an ass and is acting that part like the best. A veteran team doesn’t go for that shit.
Nonsense!

Hopefully we can keep him around…how many concussions can BB endure, practically speaking. With playing and getting launched into windshields, that noggin’s absorbed some blows…CLE last year, the knee to the head this year.
I think DD will do well in the league, no matter what…well, unless he goes to OAK. What are the chances he gets traded for players/draft picks, or goes FA after his rookie deal is done.

I kind of agree with 5020
I have read his view before, and a few others who pointed out why it isn’t a natural aor easy thing to impliment.
I wonder if running him in there not in wildcat, but in a standard set. The D won’t know if he is in to drop back, hand off, or run something like that play in which he scored against BAL. Wildcat is obvious now, but what if they just didn’t know what was coming.
I like what DD did in that game, showing off he can pass, and god can he run. With discipline, play more like R. Cunningham than Vick in his prime (if that is what that was).
Twell, I could go for any of that as well.

Ben's our guy
but DD is intriguing…two completely different QBs ( as far as we know) in that DD has speed and you would have to account for the possibility that he could break a run or pass…which do you commit to defend?
Of course Vick was that, but from what I have read and seen, DD is likely to be a more accurate passer
the Ravens won a super bowl with Trent Dilfer

How about us in 2005? Ben was a rookie, very green, with a veteran team. They didn’t win so much because of him that year, but he did do a heck of a job not losing.
He didn’t shine in that first SB, but the team didn’t need him to.
I still want him as my QB, but I think he’s making nice with the wrong folks – the team should come first.
I don't care what people say about the NFL being a passing league.
It will always come down to who can play defense and run the ball effectively

I'm actually a better hitting instructor than OC.
I had my own hands of stone on the football field so had to play LB, offense isn’t my strong suit which is why I like to run the ball so much. That other shit is too complicated for my pea brain.
But hitting I can teach cause I did it well in my younger days…..
ok then you can be the DC on my football team
I think Arn is an OC for high school team,I thought I read that some where on here once, so he can be my OC then

So you’d be willing to put some cash on the Jets winning it all? Seeing as they have the best D in the NFL and the best rushing attack?
I might put my money on Peyton or Rivers.

No way. Steelers veterans on both sides of the ball in 2005 were much
better than the Jets this year. It seems to me that the Jets ask Sanchez to do much more than the Steelers did back then.
Ben was a rookie in 2004, losing to t cheaters in t AFCG, He had 13 consecutive wins, but,
I don´t know what games had some of Us are seeing, in 2005, had a more than decent season, but that year BB had a Monster PS, mostly against Denver, that 2º quarter, just killed them, against Cinci, He was awesome, and He put almost in their knees t Colts, if not for that robbed by the zebras Polamalu´s Int b/c loss of control after been with t ball controlled and lost it b/c He tryed to run, that bring Us those final cardiac 5 minutes, that end up with their failed FG.
Also must of Us had been saying Our opinion to Our bosses about any group´s common liability or common responsibility, to reach an agreed final position.
O sales tickets,...and let D rest a little, and D Win Championships.
great in the 2005 playoffs though!

How Reliable was Wexell's Source?
In principle I agree that this could be too much power for one player — but if Ben did sit down and give a defense of his OC that was convincing and based on fact, what is so wrong with that.
But beyond that, you really need to question if this report is even true.
I have a lot of respect for Jim Wexell, but one has to question the reliablity of his source.
Seriously, this is the guy who said Arians was gone because of a “changed culture,” something with other veteran journalists completely rejected (see Gerry Dulac’s response to the final question he got in the PG Plus chat on Wednesday.)
An alternative explination is that someone on the South Side does not like Arians and is leaking this kind of information.
I think this is
incredibly irresposible. The fact of the matter is that if he were just an ordinary person, no one would even care if he twittered that. No one but his friends would have ever known he said that. But his ‘celebrity’ status, for lack of a better word, has earned him quite a few twitter followers. The truth is that he is an insider reporter. Whether or not he means it as actual news, the job that he has gives the illusion that it is ‘news’. That makes something like this irresponsible.
It makes me smile when I hear people say that this or that caused the season that we had. Oh, Arians called too many pass plays. Tomlin was too easy in camp. Ben’s too chummy with Arians. Tomlin’s too chummy with the players. Zeirlien looks at too much porn. The simple fact is that teams lose games every year. Our players didn’t play well sometimes, and the coaches made mistakes sometimes. It happens every year. A couple of breaks go our way and we are 11-5 instead of 9-7.

I also think people are overreacting to the supposed “drama” in the locker room.

It's been no secret
that Ben is very happy with BA. Why this surprises anyone is amazing to me. I’m not buying into the mentality that the player OFFENSIVE LEADER (aka Ben) by voicing his opinion and even lobbying for the job of his choice in OC is in any way a display of “too much power”.
Anyone in management knows when the round table comes together, each manager is asked their opinion, required to back their opinion with concrete substance and then the boss (aka Tomlin and the front office) make decisions based on substance, opinions and plans for improvement.
It’s also no secret that Ben’s sack #‘s would be high… very high…under ANY OC because of the way he plays. Ben takes many more sacks than he should because of super glue on his hands that prevents him from ever throwing it away. Ben needs to change his own mentality about this. This season’s struggles were not all BA’s fault. There is enough blame to go around on the defensive side of the ball as well.
Sounds to me like scape-goat city has a big BA on it. Sorry. Not buying it. Toss half the blame LeBeau’s way. His defense was anything but stellar this year and certainly didn’t do much to protect 4th quarter leads that the offense put up….and allowed the opposition to walk all over them like a doormat at times!
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
come on people if BB is that bad and is causing locker room problems then why did his team mates vote him MVP
I would take stories coming from someone’s twitter account with a gain of salt. Until I see in print sources like the pitt post gazatte or pitt tribune I will not believe it.

I’m not sure why sticking up for his OC would make Ben unpopular in the locker room anyhow. I mean, a lot of Steeler fans have problems with the way Arians runs his games, but I’d guess that pretty much all the guys on the O love him.

When it occurred to me that sportswriters I read online rely on the clicks on their article for their measure of effectiveness (advertiser pay for most viewed), of course they dramatize, exaggerate, write complete crap….traditional media is no different.
That’s why I am mostly reading here now, and following up with what some folks here are mentioning as respectable, accurate….

A. Not at all. Ben is well-respected in the locker room. He’s a quality quarterback and leader. Guys respect what he’s capable of doing and what he does for us, not only inside stadiums but also here at the practice facility and outside of here as well.

big wexell fan, but...
he’s certainly been on the ‘fire BA’ bandwagon, and his reporting this week reminds me of our 3rd and short playcalling. i think his sources are telling him what he wants to hear. plus if ben has all this power, then wouldn’t he lobby to draft a better lineman than tony hills?
run that bus
Who knew
Sweed wouldn’t bust on the scene like Hines? I fully expected one kick-ass WR and got…. well, disappointed. I’m not going to throw Sweed off the bus after this season. Something wasn’t right with him. I’m going to have a little faith and hope that he can fix whatever it was that was holding him back. He’s extremely talented.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
I agree with the talent. It's the head that has me worried.
My god, he’s got to be talented to make it this far. We’ve seen just how open he can get – this is the NFL and this guy is WIDE OPEN a huge percentage of the time he’s on the field. That’s what gets me so excited.
Then the ball gets to him and he’s got hands of Ike. How many chances is he going to get? Look how quickly Mr. Wallace jumped him on the depth chart and took advantage of the opening?
We’re going to need Sweed/whomever within the next 2 years when Hines hangs them up…clock is ticking…..BTW – did he sign a 3 or 4 year deal, any idea?
4 year contract
He would be a great asset to this WR corps. Fix the hands and the head and look out. This kid is something.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
I think the issue with the hands is the head.
I’d love to have it work out, I really would. If I’m not mistaken, he’s pretty fast as well, isn’t he? Imagine the height and speed going down the sideline…
The options would be unreal. No one is as crafty as Hines, but he is slowing down. Imagine the safeties playing so far off the line that Mendenhall has space to hit those holes then kick in his afterburners to boot.
Let’s get him fixed….
Oh I agree completely
There was a short circuit in brain wave activity. (Actually, I think it was Shattered Confidence Syndrome: Stage 4) Dropping a TD because you’re looking at yourself on the big screen? Someone needs to let him know he’ll get to see it in a minute; just score and tada! Replay on the big screen.
Fast? Um, yeah! Remember Plaxico (the old Plax… you know, the one pre-ego and pre-offensive pass interference every other down?) Yeah well Sweed has the talent to be 10X the receiver Plax ever hoped to be on a consistent basis.
Tone has moves. Hines pretty much has “it all”. Sweed….. needs a great Sports Psychologist to get him over his mistakes.
These guys would be an arsenal of unreal proportions for us and give defenses more than they can handle. Then, add one of the most solid TE’s in the game (Heeeeeeeeath) into this…. Mendy turning it on…. FWP (I hope he stays) playing like we all know he can….Wallace just being Wallace and I’d like to know which NFL team has a more complete offense. (yeah, yeah, yeah…. keeping working on the O-line but they improved by leaps and bounds this year.)
Ben is a different type of QB than Brady and Manning. He’s not fragile like Tom. (Hard to find anything not to like about Peyton but all things considered, I wouldn’t put him in a different class than Ben.)
Sweed IS the ingredient missing with Hines slowing down. Yes; let’s get him fixed.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
Okay, I need to ask this:
Let’s say the above works out even half as well as we hope. Just by keeping the safeties out of the box, doesn’t that help the line? Both running and protection would be closer to 1-on-1 blocking. Hitting Heath with short, quick passes is another way to relieve the pressure, and how about a check-down pass to Mendenhall and Moore to offset the blitzes?
These types of things help keep Peyton on his feet, and look how well teams did this to us this year to keep our LB’s at bay? Can’t we learn something about defeating pressure on O, from our own D experiences?
Maybe BB doesn’t need to throw the ball away (ouch, that hurts to say) at all if he’s getting rid of it sooner. Not the sideways passes to Hines and Tone, we open the game and never go back to it, another thing I don’t understand, but how about a dump to the RB’s for a change and let our fearsome WR blockers work the DB’s? Look at how well Wallace stretched the field 2 or 3 times a game and now imagine that doubled and opening up the first 10 yards from scrimmage.
Well absolutely!
Anytime you have the ability (and weapons) to mix things up, the defense is knocked back on their heels. Short passes to Heath have proven (time and time again) to be effective. They move the chains.
With Mendy running with some consistency (and protecting the ball a little better) we actually have what appears to the naked eye to be < gasp > a running game.
Sometime, receivers just don’t get open. It happens. Fact of the matter is Ben simply refuses to throw it away. How many 3+ longs off of a 2nd down sack were we faced with this season?
I’d love to see the RB’s catch a short pass. That, however, would require an adjustment to the playbook.
The O-line has taken too much blame and not nearly enough credit IMHO.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
I agree with you about the O-line.
When they mess up, they deserve to get flack. Too often they get the flack anyway.
Ben, we implore you…extend your career by finding the hot read a few times per game! Drop offs to Mendy won’t hurt your average YPC, he regularly gets more than 10 when you dump it to him!!!
"hands of Ike"
Like that. New entry for my phrase dictionary.

Not a BA fan
His offense is geared around big plays more than consistent yards, and I prefer the latter.
However with a good defense that keeps the score low those big plays often come in handy more than the field position game that a consistent offense creates.
Also with Holmes and Wallace we have serious big play weapons and we all know Ben is a big play guy. The problem comes when the big plays get shut down.
I flip-flop on Arians regularly, yeah I disagree with the play-calling a bunch, but I used to yell at the TV when you could tell they were going to run that dumb sweep to Bettis that always sucked. I think our hatred of Arians is amplified by his system being so different than what we are used to.
I don’t think Tomlin and Arians see all that differently. Look at Dungy teams, they are big play offenses and big play stopping defenses. It’s a simple idea, the team that makes the biggest plays wins. In the modern NFL a big play offense has much more boom potential than a ball control offense. It has more bust potential too, but you don’t wina Super Bowl with solid performances, you have to perform big time, and that is what this offense is designed to do.
I would also blame Ben about as much as Arians for this season’s offensive woes. How many games did we lose because we couldn’t score where you would say Ben was playing well. And by playing well I mean not throwing horrible passes or never ever checking down. There awere a lot of open guys Ben missed this year while he played crappy.
all due respect...
To Jim Wexell, but I’m not convinced about this report. Not to bore you all to death with journalism best practices, but “just learned” isn’t exactly a thorough explanation. It’s not the same as saying it’s a front office source that can’t be identified for these reasons.
I’m taking this one with a grain of salt, and I think you should too. If you check out Wexell’s Twitter feed, it’s largely anti-Tomlin, anti-Cowher, anti-every steelers beat reporter. All I’m saying is let’s not confuse cynicism with thorough shoe-leather reporting.
by BrooklynSteelersFan on Jan 9, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions
“Just learned” in this case is another way of saying “just heard from a guy who in my opinion might not know the real story but is much smarter than that last moron who sold me a bill of goods.” or “just heard from the same guy who was wrong before but surely can’t be wrong all the time.”
Wexell has no credibility about any alleged news on this topic.

Don't give a shit about Wexell or his pay site...
or any of the other pay sites. It’s a freakin recession and I can’t afford that crap. Even if I could, I would not pay for the news about the Steelers. If they can’t make a buck from the advertising then that’s too bad.
Not the same team
I’ve posted here saying the same thing before: This is not your father’s Steelers. Once Ben signed the big contract, the team changed in many ways. The team runs through him, period. He calls a lot of the plays, and the ones Arians calls, he has the authority to audible out of. Tomlin can’t, or won’t change that. The big contract also ate up a lot of cash that Steelers teams of the past would use for depth, including special teams. So you get what you pay for. So if you’re going to continue to be a fan, you better get used to pulling for Ben to win the game, and do not blame the coach, the OC, the defence, or anyone else.
number of good points.
Look, I loved the years of Cowher-led “Steeler Football” as much as anyone. BUT look at the Super Bowl winners for all of those years that the Steelers ran that run-pass ratio. The Super Bowl winner has a franchise quarterback every year except for 2002, 2000 and 1992.
Sorry, but “Steeler Football” wasn’t the dominant philosophy that some of us remember it as.

Now, if BA would convince Ben to WORK OUT in the off season instead of doing stupid shit like ______________, *feel free to fill in the blank, there were plenty, then BA would be worth keeping..
