Mark Schlereth rips the NFL on this weeks fines, calls it the "National Hypocrite League"
I used to think Mark Schlereth was kind of a loudmouth Steelers basher when he first started at ESPN. Over the past few years he's really gained my admiration and respect for his honesty. This is what he had to say on SportsCenter concerning this week's NFL fines for "dirty" hits, especially towards our own James Harrison:
Former Broncos OL Mark Schlereth Calls NFL "National Hypocrite League"
Absolute truth and respect to Mark Schlereth for telling it like it is.

Hahaha, yeah he mentions that.
And says it’s too bad “NHL” is already taken.
D'oh...
See Idaho educations aren’t that bad.
I have always liked Schlereth myself, I think he brings a lot of inside knowledge of the game that many of his colleagues lack, and does it in a way most fans could understand. I wish more analysts were able to discuss x’s and o’s as well as he does. I wish there was a little more depth to what he says, so that should tell you how I feel about the others who offer even less.

If I could find the actual article I would post a link...
All I found was this quote from MB:
Tunch Ilkin, on an interview here on BTSC in ’08, said that Hartwig was the guy who had impressed him the most with his play. (link)I remember the interview, but can’t find it.

Wow -
lots to think about, from a man who has the right to say it. In re the “Moment of Impact” video, I noticed last season that the montage the NFL played before a game started had a helmet to helmet collision – I think that they at least have removed that…

Part of the problem
is the league has gotten too big. The NFL doesn’t just cater to the hard core football fans. They cater to the fringe, every day fans too. The females who normally watch the view, the CEO execs who never had the athletic ability to play football in their life and don’t understand what it means to play football, and the journalist who sensationalize everything makes it worse. Since business is all about growing your client base, the NFL wants to convert these people to hard core every day fans. So they figure they can ignore the already hard core fans because they’ll never leave. Will it work? I have no idea but they want the game to be pretty so that everyone will buy into it.

Careful, tannofsteel84...
I’m sure there are quite a few “females and CEO execs” who take exception to your characterizing us as casual NFL fans. Fringe? Really?? Surely you didn’t mean to say that!
I am a diehard fan of fast, hard-hitting, smash-mouth football, and a fan of the Steelers for going on 40 years. And I’m a girl. I could not agree more with Mark Schlereth and all the others on this blog and others across the internet who say the NFL is being ridiculously hypocritical about this whole thing. It angers me a great deal that Harrison was fined at all, and that his fine was higher than the other two. But I feel a little like I’m being held hostage while the double standard-loving NFL execs try to make football safe for everyone. Can’t and shouldn’t be done.

Its not so much about being PC, its about communicating your intended meaning clearly. As a writer my job is to communicate in such a way that the reader can understand what I mean. If I’m not doing that, then I’m not being coherent and thus the point of writing becomes invalid. So I’m not trying to be PC just clear in what I say. :) Remember don’t feed the trolls!

I asked him why he claims to want to protect the players but he wants to add 2 games to the season? then i asked him why James Harrison’s fine was more then Robinson’s and Merriwether’s when both of their hits were worse and more intentional than Harrison’s hit that looked completely legal because his helmet did not actually hit Mass’s.
I also told him he is the worst commissioner in sports history.

I'm someone who thinks the NFL usually gets it right ...
however, without question they are screwing this up. My biggest problem here is the fact the NFL doesn’t listen to their own players in regards to this. This seems to be a total knee jerk reaction, and they are blanketing everyone who hits hard into it.
We’ll see how it all shakes out, but the NFL better be really careful not to mess with the product too much.

I would love to see that
if the two sunday night teams made an agreement to play two hand-touch for each team’s first offensive series, that would send quite a message. once touched, the offensive player would have to take a knee to get play stopped. it would take some planning, and a lot of trust in your opponent, but it would be pretty funny.

they’ve been saying that they want to make the game safer for a whole year now it seems like. they pulled the pictures this week. the media caught them sticking their hand in the cookie jar so they pulled it out. they aren’t doing this for any moral or legitimate reason
Well, this wasn't in reference to the video that they said this...
It was in direct reference to a picture for sale of Harrison’s hit on either Cribbs or Massequoi. Still, what you say has merit, that’s undeniable.

I know, but if you think about it, when you're dealing with the history of the game...
They showed Deacon Jones’ head slap.
They showed Night Train Lane’s necktie hits.
They showed Fred Biletnikoff’s stick ’em.
These were part of the game. The league won’t (and never should) deny it’s past. This is how the game got to where it is.
But you can’t head slap anymore, and you can’t clothesline players anymore, and you can’t use stick ‘em. Heck, players don’t even go both ways anymore like Concrete Charlie (on the field… on the field, you people). Deacon would be displeased, Night Train would be nettled, Biletnikoff would be bitter. This post cannot be rec'd enough.
Mark Schlereth hit the nail on the head perfectly. The NFL is beyond out of line. Hits like this have been happening every year since football’s beginning. Now 3 or 4 of these hits happen on one weekend and the NFL s**ts its pants, and can’t believe how violence like this can happen. I’m all for player safety but this crosses the line. Punishing players for playing is, as Schlereth says, “criminal”, and then the NFL turns around and sells it. Truly disgusting.

Couldn't say it better myself
it has become a trend, since Goodell took over I’ve noticed some clear indications that the game is losing its violent essence. Those roughing the passer penalties have become ridiculous and the hit on a defenseless receiver is a joke (I used to love when after a tipped ball the safety would pound the receiver for going over the middle). This is absurd, at this rate I don’t think it is an overstatement to say we will end up with flag football. Football is a collision sport, it has been like that since its inception, some times stuff like this happens but that’s the nature of the game. Last sunday was just bad luck several guys got injured, but the game has always been like this
by steelermaniac1991 on Oct 20, 2010 3:46 PM EDT reply actions
Dangerous play has been legislated out of the game since the beginning. Anyone who thinks rules changes for safety reasons is somehow a new and terrible trend doesn’t know the history of the game.
yes, I know and I support most of the player safety issues, I just mean that it has gotten way out of hand recently, mainly with the roughing the passer penalties, at some point those hits are just the result of the inertia of the player while going at full speed. Hits and violence are a part of while we love this game, injuries are a part of it, if the point is for no one to get hurt then they should not play football to begin with

it's all about money & liability
+2 games is to make more $ for the league. not covering schlereth current surgery needs saves $ and keeps insurance premiums down and ticket prices down. having less injuries keeps costs down. don’t you think schlereth has thought about suing? the fans and the players, says "oh let us play, we know the danger.’ but they can’t legally indemnify the league. years later, a player can sue based on “the league put me at risk, they knew more about l/t head injuries” and guess what they will win every time. say james harrison is unlucky and goes head down and paralyzes himself from the neck down. don’t you think he would sue the nfl for all he can get? don’t be naive, he will be at the courthouse filing a lawsuit while on the way to the hospital. he will have to, to have any kind of life.
think players can’t win b/c they were warned of the risks. well, tobacco companies warned smokers for years it was dangerous. oh, by the way a few years ago they had to pay $365 billion and stop all future lawsuits, but even now they are still being sued and losing. but in the end guess who pays for it? just ask the ny smoker who pays $11/pack. cigarettes should be $2/pack. are fans willing to pay much more for tickets so the league can offer comprehensive lifetime health care for all the past employees?
don’t you think eric legrand may have to sue rutgers over his lifetime? if he stays paralyzed his costs may be $250k+ per year. gee, the nets donated $75k that should get him thru a few months. not that it wasn’t a great gesture but the costs of long-term medical care can be atronomical.
the law is clear. warning someone of the risks does not really protect you especially if you made $ off them. this is why the league will have to keep adding rules and getting “softer” unless you can change the legal liability.
No doubt that the NFL is guilty of hypocrisy.
But that doesn’t mean that penalties for helmet-to-helmet shouldn’t be increased and enforced. What it does mean is that the NFL should stop glorifying blatant brutality in the game.

Hmm, obviously
I would disagree with you. But mainly I would say that they can’t have it both ways. They can either change the rules/requirements to genuinely make the game safer, and stop with the announcing/dvd/photos etc. that emphasize the brutal side of it, or they can say “that’s what the game is, that’s what people like, and that’s what we’ll give them.” Trying to profit from some people’s enjoyment of the ‘blatant brutality’ out of one side of their mouths while sanctimoniously saying that we have to make the game safer with the other is BS.

Canadian Content
One of the drawbacks of Canadian content rules on radio in Canada is that some “popular” entertainers get played way too much. It is as much of an issue now but it was rough in the early days of the rules. One can only hear Anne Murray sing “Snowbird” so many times before you want to pick up an axe and start smashing the radio.

There has to be a reasonable assumption of risk
Just like with any job. I’ll use mine as an example: I’ve successfully completed 23 years in Veterinary Medicine. For years, I’ve wrestled out of control 100# Labs, feral cats that truly wanted to kill me, evil Dachshunds who snarl, snap and do their level best to bite the hell out of me and a variety of “not MY dog” clients who really believe their dogs’ room-vibrating growl is merely him “talking”.
I’ve been bitten a few times and seriously thought about Hazardous Duty Pay requests…. but the fact of the matter is…. it’s a reasonable expectation that a bite will happen at some point.
It’s no different than the NFL. If you play a contact sport, contact injuries shouldn’t be such a huge surprise. (No Billy, this is not a vote for violence… it is a vote for reality.)
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
Vet medicine
I knew a woman who was working on her degree to become a vet. She was playing on going into a large animal practice (horses and cattle) but she claimed she knew she would have to switch after 10 years because her body was going to take such a physical beating. It didn’t stop her. She just knew what the consequences would be and went ahead anyway.

Mr. Schlereth, my opinion of you continues to grow.
I didn’t know you too well when you played; these days I find you to be refreshing as an analyst, and the passion on the video was terrific. Kudos to you sir, for calling the NFL out.
Wish I could rec 10 times
Unfortunately I think his words will fall on deaf ears…

On the Cribbs hit: "I thought Cribbs was asleep," Harrison said. "A hit like that geeks you up, especially when you find out the guy is not really hurt, he's just sleeping. He's knocked out but he's going to be OK."
This is not new for Schlereth
He has been making similar comment for a couple years now. I have a lot of respect for the guy and his passion. It is so refreshing to see this, rather than a scumbag dweeb like Rodney Harrison, who criticizes the same hits he was famous for making.

Mayock
I have yet to get an answer to the question that Mike Mayock brought up, of why doesn’t the league mandate helmets that are designed to prevent concussions? The helmets are available, yet none of the players who were concussed this past Sunday were wearing them. It’s the players choice as whether to wear them or not. I don’t understand this, if saftey is the priority, and the proven technology exists and is available, why doesn’t the National Fraud League mandate them? If theres a good reason, then fine, but I have yet to hear what that reason is? Anyone know?

Very likely would open them up to lots of lawsuits
No helmet can prevent, or claim to prevent concussions. If the league mandated a certain helmet and players till got dibilitating concsussions, they could likely sue the league since they made them wear that helmet. The best option for the League is to provide the players enough resources to educate themselves on their own and choose their own helmet accordingly.

Criminal act fining Harrison, Robinson
Both of those were legal hits and to be fined like they were is criminal, point blank. Deebo plays all out every play, and has made a career of knocking people out. How can you change that? And the NFL wants to go to an expanded 18 game season as well? The NFL players association better stand up and grow a pair or they will get zilch from the new bargaining agreement.

It seems to me. . .
Like the league is trying to flex their muscle here against the NFLPA leading up to the new CBA talks – 18 game season, players getting ridiculous and uncalled-for fines for otherwise legal hits. You’re absolutely right – the NFLPA has to stand up to this bullshit or they’re absolutely gonna screwed along with the true fans of the game.
Face it
the NFL and the owners have this game down to a science. They know that they aren’t visible for the most part and can get away with being greedy. Most fans are envious against the players because they make so much money. So they already play into the owners and NFL hands. What people don’t understand is, less money for the millionaires means more money for billionaires. Bottom line is, no matter who wins, the fans are getting any money out of it.

I’d love to know the Rooney’s reaction to this: “Roger, is it OK to play defense anymore?” They’re team players, but he’s making an example of a Steeler every time he wants to make an example, and that hurts the brand.

Him talking about how he has 29 surguries that have been directly releated to football
and the NFL tells him he isn’t injuried enough for the NFL to help pay his medical bills is insane. What is injuried enough Jim Otto who had to have his right leg amputated, 40 surgeries(29 on his knees alone!), almost died on the operating table and has had to fight off three infections due to replacement joints, including one time where he went without a right knee joint for 6 months while waiting for the infection to clear out. Is that injuried enough, what about Mike Webster who couldn’t remember who he was due to the head trauma he suffered during his playing career. What is injuried enough NFL, is Earl Campbell injuried enough, he has to use a wheel chair to get around because his knees are so racked with arthritis.

ok but
here is the problem. businesses have to be economically viable. if they paid for all their retirees healthcare they would be bankrupt right now and their health insurance premiums would skyrocket. or maybe they self-insure and that is why they denied mark payment. either way, if we want the nfl to take better care of their retirees then we will have to pay more. are we willing to pay double for tickets and maybe put all nfl games on pay per view to pay for this?
or maybe the players would set aside 10% of their income into a retiree health pool to pay for long-term injuries like marks. either way someone has to pay or they have to make the game safer. if we fans could come up with a better solution then i am sure someone would listen.

schlereth also said
mark schlereth said a few very telling things. he said no one from his former teams or the nfl has ever contacted him about his health during retirement. also he said he had 27 surgeries while a player and he now needs more but the nfl said they are not related to his playing in the nfl so they will not pay. really, is this is this a joke? but the nfl has to make this call b/c they cannot afford to pay all these costs b/c healthcare is too costly and it can bankrupt any company, including GM. this is the part of the reason he said the nfl are hypocrites. now, knowing the cost of long-term care for retirees and the information that is coming to light about brain damage, the league is forced to make changes. their insurance companies may have threatened policy increases with this new information. they cannot ignore the risks because they could end up facing the same litigation risk that tobacco companies faced. the risks were known for years but the states finally said, this is bankrupting our state health care funds. so they got their $365 billion pound of flesh. in other words the league could face liability on long-term player health if they are challenged. like it or not with what they are learning about concussions, they are taking a pre-emptive strike.
imagine if you are a player like mark schlereth but you have dementia so you can’t go on tv, be an analyst and sell green chile. you are broke b/c you can’t work and you never made that much when you played. would you sue the nfl? of course you would and pretty much anyone eles would. today the $ is huge compared to 30 years ago. this is the dillemna and this is why the league will keep watering down the game with more rules and make the game safer. as fans we will not like it but what is the choice for goodell and the league?
the league now has verifiable information on the long-term effects of repeated head injury. this is fact, it does not affect every player the same but nfl retirees are far more likely so suffer brain related disease. it is easy to criticize goodell, but what you do differently? i know it sucks but i don’t think the owners have a choice, they have too much to lose.
