how concerning are brees's 4 INTs?

was this a fluke game or has this been a growing issue? i havent watched much of the saints, but i know that Brees isnt putting up the fantasy numbers that were expected of him. what happened to this offense? is reggie bush that important to you all? oh and speaking of him, whats his status i heard he might be coming back this week

The four interceptions was a fluke but he certainly hasn’t been very “Brees-like” this season.

I wonder

if people (especially male people) underestimate the effect having a new infant in the house has on players. That is a very emotionally and physically draining time, and just because you’re a football player doesn’t mean you can automatically throw that off. Our own Troy Polamalu has for the most part been much quieter than usual after the birth of his son.

I can probably tell you part of the reason.

I had to call acrollet this morning at an hour when he would generally be awake, but woke him up, because the baby has been keeping them up for the better part of the last week with a stomach bug of some description. Those sorts of things go with the territory, and they take their toll.

Sleepless in VT

We follow some unorthodox child rearing methods, one of which is attachment parenting, and co-sleeping until they are about 16 months old or so. Thus we get much less sleep. I’ve never been one for sleep to begin with (avg 4~5 hours of sleep for the last 15 years) but having a 2 year old crawl into our bed every single AM is getting old. I’m not too sure I want a 3rd one now… :)

I think it’s too early to say whether he will play on Sunday. The bad news is that Sean Payton can be a bit of a pathological liar so there is a chance that even if Reggie IS good to go, he’ll never show his cards until game time.

I don’t know man, your execution has been lacking, for sure, but he changes the defense, especially when he shifts out of the backfield to line up in the slot. That move right there, about 15 feet, will change a D from a straight man D to a soft zone as they struggle to get a safety up or a linebacker in the right spot.

In that way, he’s like a Randy Moss or something. You have to account for him, no matter what he did on the last play or in the last game, or last month or last year.

Serious question time now, who the hell is this Ivory guy running the ball for you? I’d barely heard of him before and having seen very limited highlights of him, he seems to have some skills.

Also, is there something wrong with your D? Injuries? Playcalling? A weakness? The D seems to be far less threatening than last year.

I think...

the reason the defense SEEMS less threatening is because they aren’t creating as many turnovers or scoring as many points. In reality, the Saints currently have the 4th best defense in the league, one position ahead of the Steelers.

Chris Ivory was an undrafted free agent this year from Tiffin. He won a spot on the team in training camp. He’s big, he runs hard and he runs well.

I definitely would not say your defense is better. I would say your pass defense is better than ours. Otherwise, the Steelers D is a lot better in every other category that a defense can have. Run D, points per game, sacks, and takeaways.

If the Steelers want to win this game they have to make sure they run, run, run and pray that Flozell is healthy.

It was unnerving to an extent how dependent upon turnovers we had become. Plus this team has not been good at getting stops for a while. So it is good to see this, epsecially with so many backups out there.

The REALLY suprising thing is...

7 of his 10 INTs have come against the Cardinals and the Browns. I don’t know how much of this week’s struggles have to do with the birth of his second son. I also am not sure if the added attention hasn’t taken its toll on Brees. I think he needs to take a break from the social netwroking and just go play his game. It’s nice to hear his thoughts, but I’d take once a month over multiple times per week if it means his level of play will get back to where ti was last year.

Browns are actually a good team this year, I would not be super ashamed of that loss. Although, you did get blown out…that is pretty bad. The Arizona loss might actually end up being a much worse loss, especially since they are NFC.

What’s up with Colston? He is not having a terrible year, but he hasn’t seemed to be much of a deep threat recently. His Y/R is down 4 yards from last year and his longest reception is 30 yards. I doubt people are doubling him since Brees is so good at spreading the ball, so what is going on with him?

How did your pass defense get so much better this year? Last year it gave up a lot of yards, but was very good at forcing turnovers. This year they seem to be the opposite. Looking through your match-ups this year I would say the best pass offense you saw was Atlanta (13th). Otherwise, you’ve seen 24th, 16th, 31st, 32nd, 18th, 22nd. Would you say that you have had favorable match-ups or have you made some scheme change or personnel change?

"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"

by John Stephens on Oct 26, 2010 8:08 AM EDT reply actions

Colston isn’t getting open enough, and has dropped some crucial passes, which seems to have happened to all of our receivers this year.
Our D in general has improved, personally, I put all this on GW coaching. He seems to have shifted away from being a turnover monster into getting stops, and it works, The problem has been the offense giving up turnovers this year instead. Which has put the D in bad situations which makes it harder to get turnovers.

But trust me, we know how you feel after completing what one poster here called the “triumvirate of suck” by losing to the Chiefs, Raiders, and Browns. Anyway, if you had to pick a player on the Saints that may not be a household but one we needed to watch out/account for, who would it be? (on offense and defense).

Jimmy Graham

He is the third TE and is a rookie, but he has been getting more PT as of late and has made some great ST plays. I would also say our 1st round pick, Patrick Robinson has been performing a lot better than most of us would expect. The Browns didn’t even go after him at all last week and he hsa done a solid job.

How about for you guys? Who is somebody we wouldn’t know about that might surprise us? I know it is hard to find a player for the Steelers that doesn’t get much attention because y’all are always on the highlights (because you’re usually always winning).

Well you got the BTSC favorite player in Redman

with Powerback style of running that brings back memories. Then we got 2 rookie WR that are play well. Our 6th round pick has already returned a kickoff for a TD, and the other one, our 3rd pick has converted some long 3rd down situations for us.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Centers, even 1st rounders, don’t usually get a lot of notice but Pouncey has been exceptional for a rookie. I would think he is the best new player on the roster.

Ravens, definitely

It was nice to see the Bills put a scare into them. Unfortunately, they’re the Bills for a reason.

I would then put the Patriots, Jets, and Colts (I know they’re down, but they won’t stay there).

Other teams of concern would include the Texans (a lot of people have overlooked the fact that their fade coincided with losing their LT and somebody else to suspension – when they get those guys back, if they’re still any good without the juice, they could be a real spoiler).

There are a lot of other strong teams — looking at the standings, it’s gonna be a dogfight for a berth in the AFC this year – Behind (or ahead) of the four mentioned above, the Titans are good, and so are the Fish. Plus the Chiefs get to feast on the NFC west and their mediocre division, so they could play a spoiler role with some easy wins.

Really adds a lot of drama to every game.

by cee_jay on Oct 26, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and add the bengals and Browns

The Bagels look done to me, but they have a lot of skilled players, and you never know, they could at least play spoiler later. Those are also the kind of games it’s tough to win – division game, potential berth on the line for one team, and it’s the other team’s Super Bowl. Ditto the Browns, who I actually think are better than the Bagels and their record. Small consolation for them, but if they could knock us out again? They’d be happy with the direction of their franchise.

Texans lost LT due to a PED failed test due to a certain vitamin he took that isn’t on the approved substance list. Also lost their RG to injury. I also follow the Texans so I’m in the know with them (It’s also how I knew to draft Arian Foster in FF.)

Jon,
As you know, the Steelers over the yrs have been the stingiest of stingy against the run. The run stop anchors around our Aaron Smith who just had torn tricep surgery.
Do you feel that with the Saints will tend to run more this game given Drew Brees’ current passing woes and the loss of Aaron Smith. And if so….how successful do you think the Saints can be against a weakened Steelers run game?

Its amazing that the #1 opponent of legalization out there are the medicinal growers

They don’t like the idea of suddenly having lots of competition that will drive down prices. Everyone turns protectionist when its their livelihood at stake.

legalizing pot will put the crooks out of business

You don’t think they can compete with the mega corps do you? If American industry decide to grow pot it would be so cheap you wouldn’t be able to grow it cheaper yourself and the government would still make extra revenue by taxing it. Don’t believe me? How many out there are growing their own tobacco?

Police not wasting time chasing pot growers could go after the people dealing in hard drugs though the danger of millions of potheads on the highways is scary.

I don’t think that legalizing marijuana will all of the sudden increase the number of people driving high. I don’t even think it will increase the number of people who smoke weed. It will just get rid of the ridiculous criminalization of a pretty harmless plant.

heh

Maybe but I remember when the drinking age in my province dropped to 18. There was a sudden increase in new drinkers who couldn’t handle their booze. I suspect the same effect would occur as kid’s who didn’t have access before will suddenly give it a try without realizing driving high is stinking dangerous. It may stabilize over time but there will be an initial period where contact high will include the crunching of sheet metal (or I guess the would be the splintering of plastic now).

I think the problem is not necessarily the drinking age

but the driving age. 16 is way too low to be put behind the wheel of a machine with the power to kill yourself or others. I’ve generally found that driving in the US, with the low driving age and the generally laissez faire approach to getting a driver’s license leads to way more reckless driving than it does elsewhere. I have to admit though, I don’t know if the same is true for Canada.

That said, an effect like you described could indeed happen, especially in the beginning – but the legal age of smoking weed would still be 21, right? If so, I don’t see it as such a big problem.

by Simonsen on Oct 28, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Manitoba

We now have graduated licences for new drivers. I don’t know all the rules though I will have to learn then next year for my boys. There are now restrictions on when new drivers can drive and who they can be with when they drive (iirc). I suspect this is partly because the province is also the sole issuer of auto insurance in Manitoba.

Legal drinking age in Manitoba is 18. If grass was legalized here it would likely also be 18.

It was considered bad form to be drunk in public which I thought was a sensible attitude.

Some U of Maryland students took me to visit the two big beer halls, the Hafbrauhaus and the Mauser (which I preferred). Because of that, I was very happy when the Steelers got a QB from Maryland. Little did I know what would happen.

That’s indeed frowned upon, though allowed. But from how I grew up, you don’t just drink beer to be drunk. you drink it to enjoy. Thus, a beer on the subway or on the street is not a problem whatsoever, and is indeed completely normal.

I just miss the freedom of sitting outside, watching one of St. Vincent’s sports teams play or simply enjoying sitting outside with a beer. That’s completely normal in Germany, but illegal in the US :/

This may be an individual thing

I have known people who could drive home so drunk they voluntarily stopped at a police Checkstop that was looking for drunks to find out what was going on and didn’t get charged but were unable to make a lane change in traffic because it was just too complex for the speed their brain was working at.

Of course maybe it is just that you get better booze and weaker pot where you are.

or know the truth

whenever people bring up smoking pot and driving like its something super dangerous, i usually point out that talking on a cell phone beats all… its almost tied with drinking and driving.yet i dont see people going full negative on cell phone users.

i think people should have to past a test- it should be set up so that you can have a “drive while stoned” license since its my opinion that most people are much safer drivers while smoking a little, very used to it, etc. Not new smokers, of course, same with new drinkers, etc. You do learn your limits.

Its usually best for those that are speed demons while sober, from what i’ve seen. If you already drive like a grandmother, its going to make you a worse driver.

When I did my license in Germany we actually had to read studies showing that driving slower than the speed limit can be just as dangerous as driving faster. Why? Because people that drive the road all the time and are automatic in their speed regulation (pretty much all commuting work traffic) are something like 150% more likely to get in an accident with people driving overly slow… Hard to believe, I know, I wish I could find the studies online, but know luck so far.

exactly

the problem is the BMWs and Mercedes that think the speed limit doesn’t apply to them at all. Take Hamburg, where the city autobahns with exits every mile have speed limits of 80 km/h (about 50 miles/hour). Then take the yahoos that think they can still do twice as much, and you get why new drivers avoid those city autobahns at all costs.

Every accident on the way to work that Ive seen is invariably a person rear ending a leaf peeper or something. Its kinda rare up here, we don’t have accidents every single day- but when they do happen, they snarl up traffic something fierce. It may not pass, but...

but the real stoners know how to get a card so they can grow their own plants for “medicinal purposes”. There are many liberal doctors that hand out cards for pain, etc. They tell the Dr only pot makes the pain go away and they don’t want to buy it illegally anymore. So the Dr gives them a card. They can grow up to 5-plants, and they meet with other “medicinal” users and share seeds. It’s pretty funny.

the government provides medical pot here

It was being grown in an abandoned mine in Manitoba (seriously) but there have been some serious complaints about quality and handling.

THC free hemp is also grown here for fiber and oil but that is in large commercial farming operations. It really does grow like a weed. The fiber is used for various things including clothing iirc. The oil is used both as a health food supplement and for cosmetics. I suspect you could probably run a diesel on it but I that is just supposition on my part.

Actually Mr. Ford built a car almost entirely out of hemp

and it used hemp oil, maybe hemp based fuel. That idea was squashed pretty quickly- too efficient, convenient, and worst of all, no where near as profitable as fossil fuels. but I digress once again.

Here’s a vid of a the actual hemp car in operation.

No sooner

had this topic start to get discussed than they had a blurb on the national news about a dispensary near SF that was giving out free joints to anyone who comes in (with their Rx I imagine) while the Giants are in the WS. Maybe but I have my doubts.

The city was built on a swamp in the middle of a flood plain (former glacial lake bottom). Years of spraying has eliminated most natural predators while the slightest amount of rain can create millions of breeding location in and around the city.

On the plus side there have never been cases of malaria or yellow fever that I know of yet.

Seriously speaking, I have a feeling Payton is gonna want to get the running game going to set up play action, anything to try and get that guy in your secondary to hesitate. Plus (I don’t know the statistics for this) anytime we have the run game, we win 9 times out of 10.

To me the biggest difference maker in this game is the O-line. They are massively talented and I wouldn’t take another line over them. But they have been sub par this year. No protection for Brees, no getting to the second level for our RBs. If they come to play we have a chance.

Trust me

You’re not going to be able to run on the Steelers. We’ve already proved it. The “best” running back in the NFL couldn’t get anymore then 50 yards.

Good luck trying, I suppose.

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

CJ is not the best RB

He is an inefficient runner that racks up fantasy points. His average just looks good because he can break one for a TD and is so fast they can’t catch him. Although I do get your point.

Maybe so but...

The Steelers allow a 100 yard rusher about ONE game per season on average. Maybe less….no matter who it is in the backfield.

I can't see any of your Rb's doing much

It’s OK, though. Many a team have smoked the Steelers’ defense with no semblance of a running game.

As for CJ, he’s going to get his. That’s what he does. You can’t hold him under 100 yards, so forget that.

With bacon, presumably

But I sure hope you don’t have to. Still, it’s a tall order, beating the Saints on their home carpet in prime time. Either way, I’m sure its going to be a helluva game. (I’ll feel better about it if Woodley is healthy.)

Question on Will Smith.

Will actually grew up and played High School ball in my area, Proctor High in Utica, NY.

Just wondering what the overall impression of Will is in Nola. If I remember, he is a captain, so he has to be a locker room leader, unless I’m wrong. Is he active in the area? A good community guy? He’s repping my home down there, so I’m hoping he’s doing it right.

I know it’s not a very hard hitting Q for your A’ing, but I was curious.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

I was visiting New Orleans last year when the NY Jets came to town and let me tell you the good folks of the Crescent City rolled out the red carpet for those loud-mouthed S.O.B.s fans. “Welcome Jets Fans” signs in windows and an all around feeling of good sportsmanship.

I’m sure that Steelers fans will have fun there, but, with halloween in the voodoo capital, leave your Ben Roethlisberger action figures at home.

A Halloween game is so appropriate

between our teams! Let’s face it… NO and Steeler Nation have some “beliefs” in superstitions and timely intervention by higher powers. The rest of the league scoffs at this (to their own peril) and ours may well be the only 2 teams that subscribe to supernatural forces that play. (The power of Renegade, etc)

Of course we have supernatural Troy Polamalu… James Harrison… LaMarr Brings-the-Wood Woodley…and of course; Mr. Redman, Mr. Ward and Mr. Ben. Everyone can see them, though; so they’re not a big secret.

We have another weapon though, supernatural and very powerful. Voodoo Pittsburgh style. His name is Cope and for the past couple of years…..he has the best seat in the house, looking over his beloved Steelers and waving his own Terrible Towel. Small in stature he may have been…..but a mountain of a man in heart, love for his City and his Steelers.

Our “voodoo’s” will clash this Hallows Eve…. The Terrible Towel is poised to strike! What is NO’s secret weapon??

(Wish you the best and may both of our teams emerge healthy! The above was just for fun…this, however is a sincere wish)

New Orleans

I knew I was in a different place when the chef at the Holiday Inn (or maybe the Sheraton or Mariott) came out to talk to us after I had mentioned the waitress about how good the breakfast had been. It was interesting getting to talk cooking with a guy who was trying his best in a city full of great restaurants.
