Explain the Fox Holding Call on the Punt

Hi All,

One play that's still bothering me is the holding call on Keyaron Fox prior to Baltimore's final drive.  To recap, Sepulveda's punt from the endzone was fair caught at midfield by Baltimore, but 10 yards was tacked on to the end of the play because of a holding call against Fox.  Two thoughts:

1.  As far as I can ever recall, holding calls against the punting team result in a replay of the down.  Why not in this case?

2.  If Keyaron was in the endzone (possible, but I didn't catch a replay) would/should the call have been a safety?

I was really surprised Tomlin didn't react more to the whole sequence when it was happening. . . thoughts?

I think we didn't get lucky

I would much rather have the Ravens drive from their own 30 than our 40

Yeah but they were going into the open end of the stadium

Both kickers had a total of 3 misses and no makes in that direction.

Wondered this myself

When I saw the flag the first thing I thought was if that’s holding in the endzone we are screwed. On the replay it looked as if it was in the endzone and I was confused as to why it wasn’t a safety. Of course I didn’t complain, but I would like to know why also.

whoah good call

why wasn’t that a safety? I feel like it should have been called that way.

However, they more than likely would have went down the field and kicked the field goal to take the league (while using the game clock purposefully) and we may not have even had a shot at the end.

I thought the hold occurred in the field of play. The issue I had with it is, normally they’d tack on yards if possession has changed, but that was clearly before the Ravens caught the ball. My thoughts were it should have been half the distance to the goal and repeat the punt

My thoughts exactly. . .

I thought you only tack on if possession has changed, unless there is a specific rule about punting from your own endzone

IIRC, I read the hold came AFTER the punt

maybe that is why it was not called a safety

Things can always be worse....

My understanding

it wouldn’t matter. If the foul occurs in the end zone, it’s a safety.

The hold didnt occur in the endzone

Hence why it wasnt a safety.

I get it

Speaking of penalties….. WTF why wasn’t hoer called for false starts?….
He was early on over half of the snaps… No wonder Harrison didn’t record a sack! The league should be sent a tape.

It was bad

I remember a play where Oher moved a full second before the rest of the Ravens OL did, and didn’t get called for it.
