Taking Stock As We Move Into The Second Quarter
So close. It has taken a few days for the sting to wear off but most of the Steelers fans I encounter are basically on the same page; to be 3-1 at this stage of the season is pretty sweet. Yeah, 4-0 would have been much better and we came about as close you can to getting there without actually getting there. But a month ago who wouldn't have taken 3-1 with a big grin on his or her face?
The quarter pole and the Bye week is a logical time to take a breath and take stock of where we stand in the grand scheme of the season. But as we all know this year we have something extra to contemplate. In a very real sense we will be starting over next week. Think of September 12th as Opening Day for Steelers Lite (without Ben), and October 17th as Opening Day for the Steelers (with Ben). At this stage of the season certain questions have been answered to a certain extent, others are still outstanding. But this time we have a few more that refer to the return of Ben and the effect on the team's performance that will only begin to be answered when we take the field against the Browns. What we know now is that this is a very good football team that can go deep into the playoffs if they maintain the current quality of play and avoid devastating personnel losses. Presumably in most, if not all scenarios having Ben rejoin the club improves the team significantly and greatly enhances its prospects going forward. Let me be more specific.
Mike Tomlin. The head coach comes away a big winner in his leadership and handling of a tricky and somewhat unique situation. How good Tomlin is as a head coach will not be more fully understood until he accumulates a greater body of work. But from where I stand the surprising (to most) success of this year's squad is directly related to his strategic approach to winning football, and his unyielding execution of that philosophy. The circumstances of this season have been such that no one would have blamed this team for a mediocre to poor early performance. That was, in fact, the expectation from virtually everyone, certainly everyone outside of Steeler Nation. But, almost in anticipation of the situation, this coach has been preaching from day one that the expectations of performance do not change regardless of who has to do the performing. I'm not sure that the team would have bought into the approach so completely if it had only been emphasized as a response to this particular situation. At no point did this team falter in confidence or give any indication that the situation was ‘unfair'. They adapted and did it so well that they and we were sincerely disappointed when they fell just short of perfection for the first four games. Incredible. It is in the areas of vision and setting the proper tone for peak performance that Tomlin is at his strongest. His weaknesses are usually at the tactical level where his relative lack of experience has betrayed him on occasion. But he rarely repeats mistakes. Control has also been an issue in the past. There has been precious little discussion of the degree of difficulty involved in coming into a situation that has been recently successful and experienced little turnover in players or staff and have to sell a new style of leadership. But it is clearly becoming his team now.
Sean Kugler and Al Everest: The new guys seem to doing fine so far. Perhaps the best indication of how things are going is that the usually unceasing negative critiques of the offensive line has slowed to a trickle here at BTSC. Trai Essex is the current favorite for a one way ticket to Anywhere-But -Here. Otherwise the first unit is playing well even though there has been a 60 percent turnover in personnel from last year. Coach K has also arranged for a rotation where the backups have been getting game reps with no apparent degradation of performance. The ensemble should certainly improve as Pouncey, Adams and Legursky become more familiar with the offense and each other. With the exception of the erratic kicking of Jeff Reed, special teams has improved across the board, even to the depth of Reed's kick offs. Generally speaking it has turned from definite liability to at least a sometime asset.
While on the subject of coaches; here is one person's tribute to Defensive Line Coach John Mitchell. For the first four games the second line of Eason, Hoke and Hood have performed with little drop off from starters Hampton, Keisel and Smith. Mitchell, as well as Linebacker Coach Keith Butler toll in the considerable shadow of Dick LeBeau. Every once and a while they deserve a little bit of light.
Quarterbacks. Interestingly enough we find the quarterback situation just as muddled today as it was last spring. Who, for example, do we jettison now? Let us be clear about one thing. If Ben isn't going anywhere then understand that this is a franchise quarterback, the professional football equivalent of a hydrogen bomb. None of the three backups can fully replace Ben. If they could they wouldn't be backups, at least not for long. What we need is the football equivalent of a short to medium reliever. Who would be best for that role? Not Dixon. He's young and has no reason to believe that he can't lead his own team. I'm sure Buffalo would love to have him. He also is developing a reputation concerning durability issues. He looks frail and will that knee ever be fully healthy? Byron would be a great choice but only if he has given up on the dream of leading his own team. Unless Ben suffers a catastrophic injury or stumbles again in his personal life, the starter position is his until the wheels come off the wagon. When will that be; 5, 7, 10 more years?
The backup would be a great job. Relative high prestige, great salary, little physical wear and tear, and probably great job opportunities when your career is done if you play your cards right. You just have to pack away that ego. Think Gary Kubiak or Charlie Batch. As we have discovered, Charlie is still pretty good at the job. Yeah, he's fragile, but not nearly as much as people claimed (nearly three games and still in one piece), with nine years as a backup common sense tells you that the physical toll on his body is less than what would be expected of a 35 year old NFLer. Nonetheless, its close to time for him. Winning this past Sunday would have been the perfect Swan Song for Charlie. But I would not blame him for wanting to be part of another run for a ring or two. Ultimately, the story would have its most satisfying ending with him being in a high level management position with the club; say, player development or evaluation. He would be strong at community relations as well. It will be interesting to see how all this works out.
Receivers. The big question here was how much would we feel the loss of Santonio. I would say that the answer looks like not much if at all. Mike Wallace is turning out to be what we hoped he would be, even with our anemic early season passing game. Hines is still Hines. The big secret about ARE is that the Skins tried to use him as a #1 or 2 receiver. He's never been that kind of guy. At #3 he's well placed. And as we have seen thus far is still a very capable receiver in the right placement. Brown and Sanders look to be capable of giving us what was lost with Holmes, but they are currently victims of the numbers game. Brown can't get into a game other than through special teams, Sanders can't get a hat. Frustrating, but this is a good thing.
Running backs. As the Pittsburgh dailies have been harping on over the past couple of days, the return of Ben should be a windfall for Mendenhall, given that defenses can't simply stack up to stop him. I would take it a step further. Now is the time to run that Pony offense and give them two backs to worry about at the same time. Regardless, this could be a Pro Bowl year for Rashard unless Ben and/or BA do some serious backsliding.
Players of note
Willie Gay. Were it not for the late touchdown for the Ravens, much more would be made of two great plays made by Gay on third and fourth down during the goal line stand. He has earned the right to be referred to as ‘Big Play Willie Gay' once again.
Brett Keisel. Lost in the disappointment of last year's team was the leap in play by Keisel who now is playing on the level of linemates Aaron Smith and Casey Hampton.
Antwaan Randle El. He's been making tough receptions since preseason. And while many would rather see Brown or Sanders in that position, El is demonstrating that he can be just as clutch as Hines Ward. He brings incredible leadership intangibles to the table as well. Finally, it remains to be seen if BA, now that Ben is back, might dust off some of the gadget plays that proved so effective when Wisenhunt was the OC. If so, watch out.
Ryan Clark. The next player after James Harrison that most deserves the title of Cold Blooded Assassin. Knocked McClain out of the game on Sunday and hit a receiver so hard that a certain reception fell incomplete. Receivers are getting in the habit of short arming passes that are thrown in the vicinity of Clark.
Maurkice Pouncey. The kid has gotten so good that I forget he's in the game now.
Lawrence Timmons. He's everywhere. And he's gonna get better and better.

Timmons will be an absolute beast by the end of this year
Go Pouncey Go! I can’t believe from day one he was our best linemen.
Ryan “the hammer” Clarke. Opposing receivers are now bringing an extra pair of undies to the game
ARE- As well as he’s playing, I can’t see him holding onto that position the entire year. Not that anyone expected him to. Do your thing Antwaan!
Arians run gadget plays? Are you serious? You’d have a better chance of getting Ben in a limo headed down to a Georgian night club. I loathe Bruce Arians.
I'm telling you, someone needs to get the Whiz's playbook from 05
And just copy pasta the gadget plays from then. We got ALL the key players back that made them work then. Hopefully not running any with ARE was a result of them wanting to preserve him incase of the (almost happened) unthinkable scenario of him having to take over at 5th QB on the depth chart.
ROFL, how the F**K did we go 3-1?
Oh ya, defense.

and gets fired and somehow we manage to get him back.
no way Cowher would be an OC, heck he would be thrilled if he can get full control of a team and that’s what he is looking for, hopefully Carolina resigns Fox, and Whiz just bombs it in Pittsburgh west, Cowher takes his job remaining Pittsburgh west and Whiz comes back as our OC….. very unlikely but a guy can dream

Only Tomlin gets fired in this scenario...
So Arians is promoted to HC.
Is that really worth it to you?!

I was just saying, since we are throwing out random fat chance scenarios....
That nothing can be so good as what you said. There would have to be something bad to balance out a scenario that good.

As long as it’s not Dallas or Cleveland, I will be in Cowher’s corner.

Tomlin
About the only thing that bugs me is the refusal to adapt the end of game D play. As has been noted ad naseum, we give up all the yardage and points in the final 6 minutes of every game.
My biggest worry is that a team with a strong passing game will exploit this, and play the entire game as if it were a 2 minute drill. What if AZ had played the entire second half of the superbowl like they played the final 2 minutes? With those huge cushions given to receivers, we just cannot stop that with the current prevent D. They really need a new approach for that scenario. Once they do that, this will truly be a lockdown, shut out type D. You’d think 2009 would have made Tomlin realize that, but nothing has changed to suggest otherwise. :/

With Moss gone, New England will ride this style of play even more so than they already have in the past.

Seattle tried that once. We wore them down with good tackling. Also note that giving up these garbage points we still hold opponents under 20 points. I think that’s a number we should reach on anybody.
No the only reason Seattle lost is because of the refs handing the game to the Steelers.
This is common knowledge.

The two minute drill is risky
If anyone plays hurry up all game we will pick them off 5 times and our defense will score as much as their offense.
Ben also needs to grow as a QB.
Absolutely no reason why BB can’t learn to dump the ball when nobody’s open or, heaven forbid, learn to run a decent RB screen. Not exactly rocket science. Ben won’t be an escape artist forever. So here’s hoping he comes back with some new tricks in his bag.

Great read Rick!
Especially agree on Willie Gay and Ryan Clark~ They rocked.
Pouncey: He’s a rookie? Wow.
El: He’s a pleasure to see on the field. Always gives 110%.
The Defense: All hail!
Welcome back, Ben! You may not be “the team” but you do make the team better.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
I've always been on the Gay bandwagon
(get it?)
even last year, I didnt expect much of him while others did. When he disappointed I was like, “well, 5th round draft pick, typically 5th rounders never get an opportunity to start.” He is a solid contributor.
As a huge Roethlisberger fan
I’m more then excited to see him back. I really am.
I just hope he learned a few lessons from the past year.

toward Roethlisberger because I’ve always felt he was a pompous ass.
But, I really believe he’ll come back better than ever. I think he’s committed to make his story a parable of redemption. Pittsburgh’s prodigal son….with a passer rating > 100.
Maybe the public relations mind tricks have worked on me, but my rooting for him will be more heartfelt because I think he’s learned a few lessons.

Pompous ass
not as bad as ocho but was headed in that direction. You know if he was wrestling in the WWF and chasing skirts all over the country he didn’t have his head focused in football. Rather he thought his success would come without effort.
Hopefully he has been humbled and has his focus back. He is the right guy (of skills) on the right team to the superior of brady and peyton.
I know a lot of people claim he is an ass or what not
but up until this year he was consistently a team captain. The players vote on team captains, so why would they vote for an asshole?
From most accounts he is a great teammate.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.
by NYSteelersFan4 on Oct 8, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know players' motivations for voting.
I was only talking about my personal perception from watching the Ben R. I don’t know Ben Roethlisberger personally, but we all form opinions and have favorite players even though we may not know them. My point is that after all this, I’d give him some credit for maturing as a person.
After superbowl XL I saw him, on Letterman I think, and he told a story about how the year before he told Jerome Bettis something like, “come back one more year and I will take you to the superbowl.” It just struck me as overly cocky…dismissive of the role of the team. Now, to my perception, he recognizes how they are playing great and he just wants to help the team. Seems an improvement.
He was elected Captain in 2008. That was his fifth season as the Starter. For three seasons after he became our star QB they voted some one else captain.
A few of those seasons it was huge fodder for the talk shows that he wasn’t elected, even though it was clear he was the best player and by position the leader of the team.
I think one talk show host even claimed it was racism.
Ben was also snubbed for team MVP votes until the end of the same season. That’s right, in 07 when he tore up with 32 TD’s over 3000 yards and a 104 QB rating James Harrison won it. James had a good year, but Ben’s was better, and the Steelers will split the award if two guys get enough votes. Ben did not.
Again 2008 when Ben was winning last second games and carrying the offense on his back Harrison with a much better year won it again. No split that year either. Insiders both years said it was because many team mates were turned off by Roethlisberger and just didn’t like him.
A couple articles I found on the web talking about Ben’s early years:
Ben getting a big head in 05, and Ben talking about it himself.
Both Najeh Davenport and Mike Logan have gone on record saying Roethlisberger thought he was bigger than the team and wasn’t liked because of his poor work ethic, and not really trying to mesh with teammates. Joey Porter even called him out for being the last one at practice and showing a lack of effort, that was verified by several Steelers who were there.
You have a lot of sources, including Roethlisberger himself stating he wasn’t a good teammate, didn’t work hard, and thought he was bigger than the team. The reason we didn’t hear more was the guy won. The Steelers wanted him in there whether they liked him or not. Add in the accounts of his attitude and manners off the field and it fits the profile.
Hope this answers the question.

Thanks a lot Phanta
It fills in a lot of the blanks. I thought it was unlikely that Ben’s behavior would just be a problem away from the team. And that just makes me all the more curious to see if his transformation (if real) will have a positive impact on team chemistry that will be reflected in play on the field.

Yessir, and also as everybody can see here BB is not doing the stretching routine, in this last
pre-season, as you can see in this link:

in that last picture you can see BB not “being part of the bunch”.
That was part of those reasons behind not been elected captain this year.

As soon as it was 4 games up, I knew the Quarterly RickVA post was coming
I love your stuff RickVA, just so you know. Been looking forward to these ever since first reading your stuff last year.
I feel the same about Maurkice Pouncey. In preseason I was always trying to pick him out to watch and critique, yet now I dont even watch him because I know he is getting the job done, we really got a special player there.
Its also nice to see Randle El back making plays, and Willie Gay back in his prime spot tearing it up. Although he struggled a lot last season, I think he is better for it.

Always look forward to your posts...great analysis, clear, logical...Thanks!
The only thing I would debate you on is the effect of the loss of Santonio Holmes. For one, I’m not sure we can measure his potential loss yet until Ben gets a few games under his belt.
The passing game is ranked in the lower tier of the NFL and although the vast majority of that blame will go to playing backup QB’s and a conservative gameplan. But…..who’s to say that part of it is that Holmes is not out there?
Also, one can argue though that he was our “Raven Killer”. We really could have used him in some way, shape or form on the field last week. Even if Batch was not able to get it to him in the passing game, he has returned punts and for scores (against the Ravens too)
The folks most breathing that collective sigh of relief when Holmes got traded were the folks in Baltimore. He posed a matchup/chemistry difficulty that the Ravens never really overcame. He has always played a critical role in recent wins over the Ratbirds and Wallace hasn’t yet amassed Holmes’ full array of WR skills.
So….especially for last week….I think we did really miss him.
Again, thanks for the great articles!
Even if Holmes was still a steeler that would not have happened.
Remember, Holmes was also suspended for the 1st 4 games of the season, so no matter what we would have had the same team out there, and probably different receivers. If we hadn’t traded Holmes it is also likely El would not be on the team as well.
That being said, if we love to the Ravens later in the year, then we can say that we miss holmes, unless of course Wallace fills in like he seems like he will.
True that....
We’d still have to wait till Pitt-Balt part 2 to see if Holmes would have made a difference.
I just hope Ben and Wallace build on their chemistry that they seemed to develop towards the end of last yr.
I don’t disagree with the main point of your post, but I do want to comment on one minor aspect of it.
The passing game is ranked in the lower tier of the NFL…
Absolutely true when looking at our offensive yardage…. however…
Completion percentage: 63.0% which is good for an 11th ranking.
Average gain/pass: 7.5 yards, which ranks 9th.
Pass plays of 40+ yards: 3 total for 7T
Our team QB rating is 77 (not-so-good for 20th), but only because we’ve been scoring on the ground with our running game.
There’s a lot of chicken and egg issues with those numbers. (Are they so good because we’re running the ball and such.) That understood, it’s fair to say the passes we are making have been very efficient plays. We’re just not calling many of them. At least, not that many when compared with the rest of the league.
Given the same number of passes called, would Santonio’s hands and feet have made that big a difference? Even is he accounted for an extra 20 yards per game, we’d still be somewhere near 28th place in the league instead of 31st.
"They eat fish and are majestic" - Great Sergios Ghost
Thanks Varmit for your feedback.
The passing stats were only a minor point of what I was trying to express.
The main thing was his performances against our arch-rival, Baltimore.
As I recall the games (especially the 3 Raven victory year in 08), Holmes always had a big play that more or less changed the pace of the game.
Much like we couldn’t stand to play against Steve McNair (he always gave us match-up troubles both in Tenn and in Balt), the Ravens hated to see Holmes on the field.
Also....speaking to the D-Line Reserves/Backups....
I too, think the D-Line Reserves have done a great job facing Hampton’s loss and the oppressive heat they have encountered.
Poor Steve McClendon got cut again yesterday.
I sure hope he clears waivers so we can sign him back to the practice squad. (fully expect that to happen but I’m always edgy until he is signed back)
He really has made a nice impact (fumble recovery) and I look forward to seeing more of him in the future. Keep working Steve!
It’s almost embarrassing how happy I get when I see there is a new post from Rick.
My excitement about the future of this team now that Ben is back is impossible to quantify.
Speaking of
The “Gay bandwagon”! Lol. Just kidding. I like Rick’s posts too, I guess I have kept it in the closet. ( thank you, I ’ll be here all week. Try the veal.)

2nd Quarter
Its a new ballgame only for the Offense, It can only get better. The QB situation is interesting for it will be the story for the rest of the season. Both remaining backups are fragile, we may need them both this season. There are not too many young Charlie Batches around the league. Will BB continue to get sacked because he holds on to the ball too long? My only concern for the remainder of the season is the running back situation. Cowher once said you can never have to many RB’s. He had 6 one year.

Much may depend on which of the two is fresher by the end of the season. Don’t college players have a shorter season? Pouncey may fade a bit at the end if he doesn’t stay on top of his conditioning, rest and health.

only disagreement
Is on the receivers. I don’t think we’ve proven anything in regards to our WRs this year, mostly cause we’ve been playing so conservatively. Will Wallace replace what Tone was to this team? That’s still undefined because all we’ve really asked Wallace to do is go deep.
And Randle El has played OK, but I’ve seen some drops out of him that could have been first downs. I agree that 3rd WR is his natural spot and he should be better for it, but I’m not sure that our top 3 WRs this year amount to anything near our top 3 last year. The drop off of Tone to El is too great. Perhaps they’ll all prove me wrong with Ben back in the saddle.
That said I think our running game should be able to make up for poorer WRs. And BA’s already tried a few tricks, we’ve seen some Wildcat plays, end arounds, and reverses.
I like the piece, but think there’s more optimism than I can share at this point in the season.

agreed
I’d like to think that Santonio was no big loss, but the fact of the matter is he was the most dangerous guy on the field after the catch. How many HUGE plays did he make – and it seemed like he made the biggest plays in the bigges situations.
Wallace might not make huge plays, but he runs better routes and has better hands. We’ll have to see if he can step up and be a number 1 receiver with Ben under center.
I think both of your points on Wallace
are arguable. Tone had some pretty solid routes and hands. Wallace bobbles a lot of passes but because he gets separation easily he can tuck it in after the second bobble.
He bobbles them because he has to turn around for em
If Ben can hit him in stride, you won’t see a lot of bobble.

It was still behind him, IIRC
Had Chuck hit him in stride, like he was supposed to, that could have gone for a lot further than just a first down.

how many did Santonio make in his first year?
Wallace had a few.

Your observations are valid Chicago
I’m basing my assessment of the receivers not on the likelihood of any one person being able to replace Santonio, but on the fact that top to bottom this is an extremely talented receiving corps. I don’t have a problem with having any of them on the field at this point. In fact, Brown and perhaps Sanders have the potential to be Santonio-like receivers (great YAC potential). But ARE is justifying the decision to play him at #3, and Battle is playing lights out on special teams. And none of these guys has any of Santonio’s downside. I believe by this time next year there will be no regrets.

Good read VA
I like the potential of the steelers rookie WRs. Both have good hands and quickness.Once they learn to read defenses, I think they can make some serious contributions on offense. But until they understand what they must do during different defensive sets they would be a liability on the field in the game.

not regretting
I already don’t “regret” the loss of Santonio. I believe in the concept of addition by subtraction in team environments. I just would argue that the improvement is not guaranteed to be shown this year. Santonio for all his faults was a pure playmaker. He wasn’t consistently great, he’d make drops, run the wrong routes, etc… But what he did was turn a 5 yard slant into a 60 yard TD. That’s an intangible skill that very few players in this league have.

I want the pony express
I believe that Mendy is one of our best receivers. You could move him out as a third receiver with Smash Redman blocking.
Also, with both backs in the game you can have max coverage when throwing deep to Wallace or going down the middle to Heeeeeeeeeath. We know Redman can block but lets not forget how good Mendy is at pass blocking.
I also think it is a better running attack with both in the game.
With the same package in on every play the defense can’t key on personnel to figure out what we are doing.
i like the pony too...
Redman’s blocking has been a very pleasant surprise. He’s been solid. It’s been said many times, but the sooner we can see the end of Moore, the better. Thank you for your contributions but please move along.
by Chicago Steeler on Oct 8, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I meant max protection instead of max coverage.
I would like to add that since Mendy is such a good receiver we would always be in a three wide receiver set with a strong running threat with Mendy and Redman. The defense could never be sure which was coming. If the opponent brings in another Defensive back to guard Mendy as a passing threat; we run; if they try to load up to stop the run, we motion Mendy out wide and make a safety or linebacker guard him. I think it merits some consideration from BA.

check down
If Arians would used naked RB screen check downs to Mendy in probable blitz situations at least once a quarter. It would seriously slow down attaching defenses and cut down on sacks.
then he would not need to make excuses like the offense needs to execute better.

What ever happened to Play Action ?
The Steelers seemed perfect for a lot of Play Action in the first 4 weeks, with defences putting 8 in the box and waiting for the run. But I hardly ever saw them use it. Anyone have a clue as to why not ?

We were playing with house money against the Purple Browns
This is why I would have loved to see the Batch use play action to Mendy on 1st down and throw into the seem for Heath or 10 yd out to Wallace. Go for broke, either way we are 3 – 1 and at least we took a shot.
If that failed, go shotgun with 3 wideouts (spread them out), and run Mendy to the right with Heath lineup next to the Hotel on 2nd down.
On 3rd down go 4 Wr’s and run Mendy to the right on a delayed draw with Pouncey getting to the 2nd level.
We still run the ball, but it spreads out the Purple Browns defense and gives a better shot at picking up some yardage.
how is it house money?
A win is a win and a loss is a loss. No special considerations are made come playoff time for the starting QB being out.
As a coach you have limited power as to the outcome of a football game. All you can do is put your team in a situation for a favorable outcome:
Again, all your defense needs to do if you run the ball 3 times is hold them for less than a minute outside the end zone. You have one of the best defenses in the league. Make them work the ball 50 yards (without stupid holding penalty) in less than a minute. That should be a winning scenario for your team. Thus the right coaching decision is made.

I like the idea of passing on 1st down
But thinking back on it, if they didn’t have the false starts, they might have been able to pull off a first down on three consecutive runs. And even if they didn’t, trusting the defense to keep the Ravens out of the endzone with such little time remaining and because they had just done so does not seem, even in hindsight, to be that bad an option.

False Starts
We MUST correct this. It should NOT happen at home. The “O” Linemen MUST “CONCENTRATE”.
Honestly, where does one start?
For starters, we sit at 3-1. Very nice. Then we have some outstanding performances, all around the team, notably on defense. I like to be here with Troy healthy, Timmons arriving, Ziggy filling in well for a young guy, and Deebo and Pottsie and the others doing what they do.
Very excited to see what our WR’s are really made of with the return of Ben. We know 86 is who we know 86 to be. We know what Wallace can do, and I just can’t wait to see what he does with ben in his new role as #2. Excited to see Heath get back to being an integral part of the corps.
Of course I love what Spindehall has done. I still have flashbacks, in a good way, of the spin he put on to spring him open and leave the defender all twisted up and on the ground reaching for who knows what.
Maybe my favorite part of the first 4 games: Pouncey. I mean, seriously…is this kid for real? He’s tough. Athletic. Plays mean. He’s a teammate. He doesn’t quit, and follows the play when it swings away from him. And he’s freakin’ intelligent. He’s a jersey I would get. Finally, the true successor to the middle throne.
Looking forward to the next 4 games.

You didn’t even mention Lamarr, Gay, Ryan, Redman, Legursky. Johnson’s blocking, Eason’s return from a Near Death Experience. And there are still names left out. Makes you almost giddy.

How much better will we be with Ben back?
What record will we need to win the division? The conference? The Super Bowl?
If We go 9-3 the rest of the season, Ben will have equaled the 1Q10 results but that should get us in the playoffs, where Ben’s best will be needed. Now let’s keep everybody healthy.
