Jeff Reed

I know this is already a fanshot, but I think it deserves more attention.  The Steelers are contemplating cutting Reed and will be trying out kickers this week.

Here is where Reed loses me, he claims that the ball moved on his missed 22 yard kick because of the bad grass, but if you look at the replay, it clearly shows that he kicked the ground before the ball, causing him to get nearly no leverage on the kick.  I hate when players blame the field, because his counterpart kicked on the same field.

Another think that bugs me is that Reed chided Steeler fans for booing him after the miss.  When asked if he heard the sarcastic cheers after a made extra-point, Reed offered this Gem about the fans in Philly, er I mean Pittsburgh, "It doesn't surprise me," Reed told the Post-Gazette. "If you're not perfect in this city, man, then you're going to hear about it. It's been like that for nine years, and why would they stop now?" Im sorry Jeff, missing a 22 yard field goal (not just shanking it, but completely whiffing) is something any fanbase would jeer you about.  Especially after missing 7 field goals in 9 games.

We are better off without him, his punk attitude and his off-field jackassery.

What say you all?

Skimpy

While not one to cut a player in mid season, especially one who has been as consistent as Reed (until 09) I like that the Steelers are bringing in some kickers.

I remember how upset I was with Todd Peterson. I actually was all for cutting him in mid season. I applauded Cowher for having a tryout on a cold November day. That’s where they found Jeff Reed. At the time he was a college kicker who hungered for a shot at the NFL. Unfortunately, now he only hungers for the 99 cent pizza & burgers at Sheetz in the early morning hours after pounding alcohol all night.

If they find a good young kicker at the tryout, sign him and save some dough on Reed’s over priced contract. If they don’t find a good prospect, maybe the process will sober Skimpy up and he will dry out and start making some kicks. Either way the NFL is a business. A business that doesn’t stand for Skimpy’s recent performances.

Screw that

Even if they don’t find a kicker during tryouts, I saw draft one this year in the 5th round, the kid from nebraska but reed must go

IMHO

I think the problem with Jeff reed is that he is too worried about his contract and that is effecting his play because his head isnt where it should be..maybe we can get antwaan randle el to kick haha he can play qb,wr, y not kicker? :o haha jus kidding of course but imagine? haha

Off with his head...ur, his foot?

As long as the guy could navigate the treacherous winds of Heinz Field, not give easy field position to the enemy and not embarrass himself and the team on and off the field, he was worth keeping despite his attitude. Now? Get him outta here!!

I've backed him for as long as I can

But now it’s time to call it what it is: done. I’d have much rather had him man-up and accept responsibility than to make lame excuses that don’t hold water.

Dear Jeff:
You had a bad night, Skippy. So did the rest of the team (remember them? The other 52 guys you work with?) The fans boo’ed you not because of “tonight”…they boo’ed you because of this SEASON. Your attitude BLOWS and you do not do your job. Last year, we couldn’t get you to even pretend like you were tackling anyone… this year; you cop and attitude and want to blame grass for your misses.

It’s really ok to have an off night… what is never ok is to fail to acknowledge and/or accept responsibility for your mistakes. I can’t defend you anymore. What you “were” isn’t anything close to what you now “are”.

With all due respect, Mr. Goodell... a 2 week notice will not be necessary. Get yourself a little box, pack your stuff and retire. There will be no party for you...but we're going to have a helluva party after you're gone. Buh-bye!

+3

I’m with you. I was a HUGE Reed fan when Cowher found him. It was easy to be his fan when he made 85% of his kicks.

Then something changed. His attitude. His penchant for getting into stupid trouble with policemen after hours. His short kick offs. His contract impasse. His internet pictures.

When you make plays I can’t have issue with your off the field drinking and shenanigans. When you don’t make plays that’s when the attitude becomes bothersome…like now.

I posted a biting diatribe about Skimpy, Willie Gay and Arians on a MB thread Monday. One admired and respected BTSC contributor took offense to my ad hominem attacks on Reed (drunken) and Arians (stupid).

When you’re making 3 million dollars but not making plays it is perfectly reasonable to call into question ones sobriety if they are consistently seen out at 3 AM during the week. While fair and reasonable, I am at a point similar to you 1Blk. Put up or shut up. Make your kicks and have a drink. If you’re in a slump (like now) sober up, shape up and get to practice. Don’t whine about the fans and the grass. Great quote;

What you "were" isn’t anything close to what you now "are".

Agreeing With You Regarding Reed's Sad Excuses

I posted a blog regarding this issue as well, and I reiterate it here: it seems as though Reed’s only objective is embarrassing the Steeler Organization.
It isn’t only his missed field goals that bother me, but also the fact that he doesn’t even make a lame attempt to stop an opponent from scoring when he is the last hope in making a stop.
I recall an instance not so long ago, but wish only to forget it: Reed barely touched a player going in to score. It was as though he just put on fresh nail polish and was afraid to mess them up!
Why pay a guy at all that doesn’t even care about the game, the team or the fans. Does he even live near Pittsburgh?

BLESS HIS MEMORY...

… but, rumor has it that George Blanda is rolling over in the grave saying…

“Geez-us… I could do a better job at my age than that pussball”.

I’ll bet George could do a better job than Reed, even today.
Rest easy GB.

Reed… you’ve done well for quite some time, but blaming the gopher in the grass is a little too Bill Murray (Caddy Shack) even for me… especially when I see your paycheck and some of us can’t get a job, but spend our last sheckles to see you at least try. Own-up to your faults as well as successes. For your perfomances you’ve heard the thunderess cheers and only a few boos…. Now hear this Reed…

To be fair

It does seem that on Reed’s missed try the turf gave in a little and his plant foot slid just a little, that’s why he kicked the grass before the football and never got any power or angle on it. But Reed has just been too consistently inconsistent with his kicking. Seriously, the guy os 0-for-4 from 40-49 yds. Those kicks are usually the ones that tie and win tight games. It ws just too much.

I just hope that Reeds sees that Steelers won’t think twice and cut him if they have to, and maybe seeing competition, seeing a hungry free agent or two knocking through a few 50-yarders in a row on the practice field will make him reconsider his performance.

Life's a journey, not a destination.

by kliuch on Nov 16, 2010 1:33 AM EST reply actions

Exactly

Not to mention, he didn’t complain about the ball moving as the OP suggested. He complained that the field conditions caused his plant foot to slip a bit.

Not defending the guy, just sayin.

I would bring back Piotr Czech

He’s a free agent now and we’ve worked with him before, he’s been the 2nd kicker in training camp/preseason a couple times. I was always impressed with his leg and even if he might not be able to make many from 50+, he can make routine FGs and more than handle kickoff duty.

Steve Hauschka is another possibility I suppose but he’s in the UFL so who knows.

That's like a pumpkin pie right in the face!

by BobPurkey34 on Nov 16, 2010 2:26 AM EST reply actions

Agree with Czech

But I believe he is in the UFL

by Allen F on Nov 16, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, he did ...

a poor job of trying to sort out what happened. Yes, he probably regrets all his foolish talk about money. But read the general tenor of Steelers Nation posts on this site. Less than perfect performance and there are cries for firings, trades and banishment. In the stadium – it doesn’t long for fans to go from “we love our Steelers” to “fire the bums.” It is probably his time to go for a pattern of failing performance, but nobody kicked better than him in that stadium.

by tenthmtnman on Nov 16, 2010 8:35 AM EST reply actions

I completely disagree

There are always a few voices who shout out for early dismissal, but if you look at the Mike Tomlin post from a few days ago, or many others throughout the years here, there are far more people who disagree with those who want to jump ship than people who believe that firings or cuts are the right move.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Nov 16, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

It's strange that he has suddenly lost the one thing that made him great for so long: His consistency.

He was always so consistent with his field goals. Nevermind the kickoffs because I think that’s kind of overrated, but he was money with his field goals all the way up until this season. Even last year he was really good despite that one bad day in Chicago. But now, he just doesn’t look comfortable kicking.

Something is in his head, and if they’re trying out other kickers, that tells me all I need to know about his future.

We have enough problems already

to have to worry about a kicker missing kicks and costing us games. Cut the dead weight and get some one who actually has something to prove and can earn their money.

Reed

The way Reed was found in 2002 to replace a horrible Tod Peterson, is the same way he could and should be replaced himself. Reed has been a very good kicker for the team over the years, but his recent off field problems and his current misses have him very replaceable. The team needs to have a shake-up and this is one spot that can be rectified. Send the message to the team that underachieving will not be tolerated! Being proactive is not against the rules.
