The Big Sleazy

Like many Steeler fans, I have traveled with the Steelers for many years. I have donned my Steelers black and gold and regularly traveled into enemy territory. In 2002 the Crew traveled to New Orleans where Aaron Brooks and the Saints outgunned Tommy Gunn and the Steelers 32-29. While the loss was disappointing, a great time was had by all. We all dreamed of the day we would return to the great city of New Orleans with their great and friendly fans and their great and friendly city.

Star-divide

What a difference a decade makes. It is true much has happened to the city of New Orleans and the Saints fans in the last 8 years. Katrina wiped out the city. (I have to admit I had tears in my eyes watching the horror unfold on TV) All of our tax dollars went to rebuild the city and get them on their feet again. The people of New Orleans begged us for help and begged us to come to their fair city, spend our money and revitalize this once grand and proud polace. We did. Money flowed in from the United States coffers. Money flowed in from charitable donations of which I participated.

When Drew Brees and Sean Payon arrived Saint fans were able to remove their brown bags from their heads, peek out from the puddles of water that remained and surge to their first Super Bowl title to the joy and delight of everyone in the country sans Indianapolis. The flood was over. The city was revitalized. The Aint's were the Saints.

This weekend 50 and the crew returned to the French Quarter to spend money, drink drinks, eat crawfish and shrimp, watch the Steelers and oggle at scantily clad young girls out celebrating All Hallow's Eve looking to show us a little something extra for some beads. But something had changed. The Saint fan is no longer a humble and friendly football fan. The Saint fan is now an ugly ferocious thug with no manners or morals. One thing is the same. The New Orleans security will abandon their principals and the people they are paid to protect in an instant.

I have been in the Los Angeles Coliseum to see the Steelers play the Raiders. That was a frightening experience. A Steeler fan was robbed of a kidney in a bathroom mugging for wearing Steeler garb. At least in Los Angeles, the LAPD helped the victim and looked for the perps. I have been to Anaheim, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Carolina and even Oakland. At all venues I wore my Steeler gear and cheered my team. While some fans would get a little unruly and perturbed, nothing has ever happened as most fans while rabid about their team are decent human beings.

I have never seen anything like the riff raff in section 606 at the Super Dome. This includes the security staff manning that section. The row behind me was filled with drunken unruly and rude young men. These young men would not stop taunting, screaming, pawing and drinking. While I have no problem with the kicking of the back of seats, the cussing at Steeler fans and the pawing of our bodies by strangers from behind, this was unprecedented....even by Oakland Black Hole standards. I had seen enough when several of the these manly Saints fans (with all of 1 Championship) began harassing a row of girls behind them. The girls asked, begged and pleaded with these drunken animals to turn around and watch the game. "Keep your hands off me!" one young Columbus OH Steeler fan screamed at these miscreants more than once. Finally after the Mendenhall run the girls stood, cheered and waved their terrible towels. One of the towels must have touched a pawing maniac who turned around and slugged a girl in the head. Now with all 5 girls in tears and the one who was assaulted clearly crying I had enough.

The Saint PA had announced any unruly behavior in the stands would be dealt with by security. At that point I left my seat and found the section 606 security guard at the bottom of the section watching his Saints. I asked that he remove the one unruly fan who had hit a girl. He went up to row 20 and removed the thug to cheers. As I returned to my seat I was met with a barrage of Saint fans calling me names. "Snitch!" screamed one rabid criminal at me. "We don't rat out people to the cops here!" No Saint criminal. You only punch and pummel women. I can imagine what your neighborhood looks like if I'm a snitch. About 4 minutes later the removed fan was back behind me with all his friends creating havoc. The pawing was more aggressive. We were being hit with things. We were being intimnidated with threats of "we're going to follow you back to your hotel" and "You better leave early." After enduring several minutes of this me and the crew (as well as the girls) decided it was time to leave. On the way out I found the security guard and asked how he could let that drunken criminal back into the section. "He said it was your fault." said the cop with glazed doughnut breath. Without ever investigating, giving a breathalizer or questioning anyone in the section this brain surgeon came  to that conclusion. After informing him that we now had to leave early because of all the threats the caring cop stated "They won't do anything, get out of my face." I realized I was blocking his view of the game so I and the crew left 5 minutes early.

In all my years of watching Steeler games on the road I have never seen a bunch of fans change because of one title. But, I do understand how all of the cops abandoned all of the citizenry of New Orleans during Katrina if they were trained by the same teachers as the security in section 606. I will never regret the charitable donations I made to the people of New Orleans and all of the tax payer dollars that went to rebuilding that great and historic place. Too bad the Saint fans did. Low class. The Big Sleazy.

I don't know if it's just a concidence

I mean surely it must just have been one lazy security guard and one group of drunken dicks?

I’m not trying to defend them, I’m just saying that every team have fans like that, even our Stillers.

Just be glad you aren’t in England watching our football. Organised gangs, with 100s of members who spend the week prior to the match planning on waging a war against anybody in the opposing teams colours. People die because of this sort of fandom, I’m sad to say that the Blackpool FC (my hometown team) gang is recognised as one of the most violent and dangerous “firms” in the country, with about 15-20 deaths being attributed to them in the past 20 years.

While Many Saint Fans Are Respectable

it was more than one row of unruly fans English. At the airport I met several Steeler fans with stories like mine which inspired me to write.
While all the security was probably not as bad as this guy on patrol from Winchell’s, the New Orleans police force did abandon their posts and leave the citizenry to loot, pillage and drown during Katrina. While soccer fans may be worse than these thugs, that doesn’t make it better. It just makes your fans worse. In the end, it’s only a game played by millionaires. No excuse for this behavior or for hitting a girl in the head with your fist.

I wasn't trying to belittle it, so sorry if it came out like that

I was meaning that we inhabit a world filled with douchebags and they always find ways to ruin things for those of use who aren’t douchebags.

I mean, there will probably be more of them now in NOLA becauase of them finally getting some recognition and that SB title.

No Offense Taken

and I agree with you regarding the hooligans of soccer and how much more unruly and inhumane it is.

It's gotten better

In the 80’s it was truly insane, obviously I wouldn’t know personally but from what I’ve heard. I tend to avoid matches with any team in the county because it often results in a massive brawl in the pub afterward.

This is the third story I have heard

of a Saints fan hitting a Steelers girl at the game. Horrible. something needs to be done. One story I heard was that when the fans saw Hines get hit helmet to helmet a Steelers female fan yelled “thats a helmet to helmet” and a Saints fan turned around and hit her with a beer can in the head and said “no thats a helmet to helmet”

This is crazy

I thought we all learned not to hit women when we were 1 year old. Situation was well handled 50.

I was really hoping you would have an awesome time, 50

and I’m sorry the experience was so disappointing. I was hoping my son and I would make the trip… maybe the blessing in disguise was it wasn’t able to happen.

Come to Nashville the next time we beat the Titans. Not only is it 40% Steelers fans… the Titans fans in the stadium (not the big mouths at MCM behind the computer that don’t know what the inside of LP Field looks like) are very gracious. I’ll be glad to be your personal tour guide as well.

I've been

to a couple titans games when they play the steelers and never had any problems, same thing said for panthers (they usually leave at halftime), baltimore, and jacksonville.

Yes. I’ve not had a bad time at LP any of the games I’ve been there. (Although I like the results of this years game more than the 2008 one..lol)

All's Good 1Blk

Had a fantastic time with the Crew up until the second half of the game. The total disregard of proper behavior by some of the fans inspired me to write. I am looking forward to visiting Nashville at some point with the Steelers. Love your city and the music. Look forward to meeting and the tour!

Speaking of which, 50s tour continues! After New Orleans I made my way up to Arkansas to see some customers and then on to Pittsburgh. I am here in the City Of Champions awaiting a special treat this evening. Local rock star Joe Grushecky & The Iron City Houserockers play a gig at the small Soldiers & Sailors venue on University Of Pittsburgh campus tonight. Special guest lead guitarist….Bruce Springsteen. Should be a spectacular show in an intimate setting. I guess I’m just Born To Run…

Man, that sucks

I am sorry your experience was ruined by some assholes… I admire the way you handled the situation though, not sure I could have done the same.

This whole story brings me to a question I have had for quite some time… In soccer (and I am sure Josh will agree with me here), fans from two different teams – especially rival teams – are usually seated/standing in different sections of the stadiums, separated by fences and even armed security. Partly because soccer fans in general might be more violent, although that differs from country to country, but also partly because sports combined with alcohol just brings out that nasty nature in people you described here.

Is there a specific reason tickets aren’t separated like that in American sports, particularly football? You are not the first one I have heard such a story from – my fiancee, an avid Steelers fan, has not been to Heinz Field in years because of the way drunken Steelers fans were behaving towards fans of the opposing team. Threatening violence, cursing, dumping beer and spitting on people, you name it. Wouldn’t separating fans into different sections solve that problem at least partially?

by Simonsen on Nov 4, 2010 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe

It’s because a socially acceptable decorum is expected and a game is supposed to be for entertainment and fun. Even in fanmania.

Half the fun of going to a game live is the interaction between fans~ both sides fans. Thankfully I’ve never experienced what 50 did in NO, although I did get tix’s to the Giants/Steelers game (complete with a meet & greet in the “Bubble” after the game) some years ago for my birthday in NY (was going to be me and my son) and my husband said the only way he’d “let” me go (that went over well as you can imagine) is if I didn’t wear anything Steelers.

Whaaaaaat?? He was worried for my safety (he said). Turns out… he ended up taking my son (in Steeler gear) and I stayed home and watched on TV. Jerome Bettis was a sweetheart to my son, BTW.

Geez

you guys always stick together! :) He was a Giants fan and freely admitted that opposing teams fans are treated horribly at the games. Meh. We lost that game but it was one amazing experience for a 13 year old.

by 1BlkGldFan on Nov 4, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

good point

it’s just that this decorum is violated over, and over, and over again – or at least so it seems. Oh and don’t get me wrong, there still is interaction between fans in soccer. I might have made it a little easy to misunderstand, but what I meant is that there are sections or blocks for the ‘real’ fans of each team, in which the hardcore fans are separated from each other. The season-ticket, lifetime-ticket holders etc. Easier to control for the police, and if you have ever been at a soccer game with the chants and all you’ll understand that the fans like it better that way as well :)

by Simonsen on Nov 4, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I've even heard of fans (unfortunatell English) being banned from stadiums

on international trips. I think it was Italy, people get killed over this so called fandom and it pisses me off. I got involved in a fan fight once, totally by accident, I was at Preston (25 minutes from my hometown) and was getting a train back to my house, at the station I saw about 100 Blackpool fans getting the train to Blackpool, we had just beaten Preston at their place so we wanted to get away quickly, anyway, I was chatting to a couple of guys there and suddenly a huge brawl starts, I don’t know what happened but it seemed like everyone wearing tangerine was suddenly being punched or kicked. I had to fight my way through a crowd and managed to force my way to the coffee shop, it stopped pretty quick though, police turned up, saw a few arrests that day.

At one point

in Philly they had so many “incidents” at Eagles games they were forced to set up a courtroom in the stadium! That’s sick… but not in a good way.

With all due respect, Mr. Goodell... a 2 week notice will not be necessary. Get yourself a little box, pack your stuff and retire. There will be no party for you...but we're going to have a helluva party after you're gone. Buh-bye!

My first steelers game

This was my first Steelers game that I have ever been to this past week. I am 21 and have been a huge supporter and follower of the Steelers for about 7 years now. I got the chance to attend in NO because I am from Jackson, MS. The Saints fans and the city absolutely ruined my experience. I have hated the Saints all my life and most importantly hated the Saints fans. I was completely embarassed as I left the stadium, not because of the loss, but because of the representation of the South that the Aints give us. I absolutely loved seeing my team, but absolutely hated it being in that Super Dome.

On the hitting women thing, I just remembered an incident when I was in Spain over the summer

I was at a music festival with some friends and my girlfriend, one night we managed to get to the front of the Prodigy set and it was getting pretty crazy, I was, as usual holding my girlfriend pretty tightly (she is 5’9" and about 128lbs) when some dick trys pushing past us to get right to the barrier, my girlfriend doesn’t move quickly enough for him, so he just shoves her to the ground, obviously, me and my friend turn this guy back around and throw him to the floor.

Basically I am trying to say, 50 is a far more restrained man than I.
