Steelers Vs. Jets: NFL Week 15 Previews

A quick Thursday shout out to Mr. Tremitiere who is celebrating his birthday in Newton, PA. Mr. Tremetiere's son, Beau, emailed me wanting to give his pops an extra surprise b-day wish as a small token of appreciation for all his father's done for him (including turning him on to BTSC !). Happy Birthday to you Mr. Tremetiere, and may y'all have a nice Holidays with one another and the rest of your family and friends. - Michael -

******************

The weekend is looming, so let's get to some New York Jets talk. The Pittsburgh Steelers host the Jets on Sunday afternoon in a matchup pitting two teams trending in the opposite direction. The Steelers have won four straight, whereas the Jets have dropped their past two and looked susceptible in multiple phases of the game. It's always a bit more interesting to look at the series history of non-divisional opponents, particularly old, historic franchises like the Jets.

So here's a glance at the Steelers and Jets' series history, a few notes on their upcoming Week 15 tilt, up-to-date season stats leaders, and official Wednesday injury reports for both squads.

Tomlinson is their leading receiver?

We face another checkdown master.
Woodley is consistent. 10 sacks for 3 years in a row is a great feat. I hope we resign him.
Another thing on Woodley is how professionally he conducts himself. Contract talks simmered down once the season started but he didnt bitch or complain or held out, he is on the field preforming. I hope FO takes not of him and resigns him.

If we can shut down tone, braylon and co., then we can force Dirty Sanchez to hopefully resort to throwing the flare’s and rb dump offs. If this happens hopefully Air Hair can take one back for 6.

2 hapless offenses

If the Steelers do not get into change mode on the offensive game plan and give the o-line and the defense some rest this could possibly be a Steeler win by one of the freshest players on the squad, 3-2 Steelers. If they do change it up 24-6 Steelers. I am looking for more screens to Mendy, slants to Wallace, and a big day for Miller. Just a littler more Miller and a little less Mendy please.

lol

i doubt it will be that low scoring, we just got to execute, I was watchin the bengals game and tip passes, holding, kept us out of the endzone. Better play selection would help but the players still have to execute

It's going to be pretty hard to execute against this defense

LT Scott already has trouble with blocking a guy that he knows is coming. Imagine how much harder it’s going to be for him when he doesn’t know who’s coming.

I’m expecting a 16-9 game in our favor. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they won this game by just being in our backfield all day.

I hope BB get better

It seems that his foot is not bothering him but all that miss throws could be a consequences, then less throw more run we become predictable and easy to defense. I didn’t have to watch the Bengals Game but all that offense not scoring could be related to that.

The match ups I like...

Are going to be Mendenhall, Redman, Moore, and Miller versus their dinged up Safeties. Also I’d like to see Cromartie on Wallace a few times. Cromartie loves to bite on pump fakes which Ben excels at. It’s what gets Cromartie a lot of INTs but also gets him burnt from time to time. If he’s reading the QB too much and not paying attention to The Flash, he’ll get burnt.

Also haven’t had a good place to post this so I suppose I’ll put it here…

A play that I think would work tremendously well in the Steelers offense for a huge gain:
Set up what looks like it’s one of our traditional bubble screens to the wide receivers:
Hines motions from left to right
-Mike Wallace turns and looks at Ben at the snap
-Heath Miller runs wide as if he’s about to find someone to block
-Sanders gets down field heading directly for either the safety or CB who ever is directly in front of him.
-Ben pump fakes to Wallace
-Sanders redirects and heads up field on a GO route.
-Ben lobs it up for Sanders.

Why I think this play would work:
-We run that bubble screen at least 3 times a game so it is right there on tape.
-Teams have seen that and are crashing in on the receiver almost immediately
-Ben has a great pump fake that can make the safety take the first step downhill on Wallace.
-Sanders has good speed but isn’t Mike Wallace who teams will have convinced themselves they won’t let him burn them deep. So Sanders shouldn’t draw much attention as he looks like he’s in primarily to block.

However this is a one-time use kind of play. After that it’s on film and teams will account for it. But I give it to you Bruce Arians. Please run it at some critical point in the future.

by Chicago Steeler on Dec 16, 2010 10:07 AM EST reply actions

I like it

and a variation, instead of a fake pump to Wallace, a quick slant to Wallace. They did this once against the Bengals in the second half and it was sensational. I think Wallace can rid the one trick pony with this, over and over, and over. The O-line gets a breather. Mendy’s hands lately are looking good and getting him involved with some screens too would be nice to see, and Redman also. I am starting to think BA is not so bad after all, it must be difficult to create a game plan without a better than poor offensive line.

by ibygeorge on Dec 16, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

I HATE BUBBLE SCREENS

They are high risk, high gain, but they only hit a big gainer one in 12 times. The other times go for one or two yards, if that. Steelers run it so often that they already can see it two plays beforehand.

by IronJake on Dec 16, 2010 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

i disagree

With our O-line if you can guarantee me around 3 yards per play (which is likely on the bubble screens) I’ll take it. Especially if Wallace or Ward can break 12-15 yards out of them every once in a while.

It’s a run-option style play. If you’re o-line is not opening holes then spread out the d with quick hit bubble-screens.

by Chicago Steeler on Dec 16, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

I like that play

but we don’t have the OLine for that play to work.

"Franco made that play because he never quit on the play. He kept running, he kept hustling. Good things happen to people who hustle."

by PCISteeler on Dec 16, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

We barely have an oline for any play

And I’m envisioning this being a very quick play. Pump fake and then go deep.

by Chicago Steeler on Dec 17, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Jets blitzers

This is the main part of the upcoming game that worries me. Will the offense and Arians be able to put their heads together and give Ben enough time or the plan he needs to succeed.

The more I learn -The less I think I know! Just enjoy reading and sharing.

by steeler junky on Dec 16, 2010 10:19 AM EST reply actions

Yes

Two field goals, and a score by the defense should do it. Ben will never have enough time.

by ibygeorge on Dec 16, 2010 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

The receiver routes take to long to develop, and our o line can’t hold protection that long. That’s why he’s getting banged up. 4 sacks against the bengals? they’ve had 10 all year…

by IronJake on Dec 16, 2010 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

Arians will come up with a plan to attack that blitz

Go empty backfield set every play and have minimal 10 yard routes by all WR’s. His secret weapon will be Ben doing a play action fake to his imaginary friend “Tommy” in the backfield before throwing the deep pass. It’s fool proof I tell ya! That Arians is a genius!

In reality, Ben will have Jets draped over him like a cheap suite all day long, but will still make enough plays for the Offense to score 16 points – all production will happen during no huddle offense when Ben calls his own plays. Arians will blame another redzone failure on “execution” even though he’s so damned predictable he might as well be sending the plays to both teams headsets. After the season the Rooney’s will give the worst OC in the league another extension because “he won a SB”.

by lkwdsteel on Dec 16, 2010 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

That list is suspect.

They claim there’s three teams worse than the steelers in pass protect. I call BS.

Two of them

will probably pass the steelers soon(after this sunday) and the other has the bottom spot clinched, so hows only one team is worse. It is hard to believe they will clinch the division with such a poor line. Someone deserves credit, could it be BA.

by ibygeorge on Dec 16, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

I read online today that the Steelers were trying out a WR from Canada

Why don’t they look for All League players from the UFL, Arena League and CFL for OL’s for our depleted OL and underperforming CB’s. I know that these leagues are inferior to the NFL, but sometimes you can find a sleeper who is waiting to excel. There has to be better players out there than Jonathan Scott, Trey Essex and William Gay. We also need to have someone available just in case Flozell gets nicked up again. If we just had a good OLT and respectable CB’s we could defeat anyone. We need to be able to protect Ben and give Mendy a little room to run. We also need to get better protection against those short/medium yardage passes that everyone is throwing at us – especially Brady. But FIRST we need to defeat the Jets. Put constant pressure on Sanchez and keep him from throwing to his receivers deep (especially Holmes).

by Damnscot on Dec 16, 2010 10:54 AM EST reply actions

depends on how many go to our CB's instead of Troy or the LB's.

Troy and our LB’s can catch the ball, but our CB’s couldn’t catch a cold. If they catch 20% of the ones they should, our team would lead the league in interceptions most seasons.

Steelers scoring drought really on OL & penalties ...

If they clean that up, then this offense can put some points on the board. It’s frustrating to see J. Scott get his behind kicked at LT EVERY weekend. And we all know that Chris K. and Flozell can’t handle speed. With all of that being said, I still think this OL right now is better than the one that played in the Super Bowl in 08.

Biggest reasons for hope with this offense is the Young Money Crew — Wallace, A. Brown & E. Sanders. This trio is the wildcard every week with the Steelers. And sooner or later, teams are going to have to punt and kickoff to A. Brown and he’s going to make a housecall.

My prediction for the Steelers 2011 NFL Draft:

1. J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
2. G/C Mike Pouncey, Florida
3. CB Rashard Carmichael, Virginia Tech
4. K Alex Henery, Nebraska,
5. NT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton
6. FB Owen Marecic, Stanford
7. OT Derek Newton, Arkansas State

Tomlin wants competition at K, even if Suisham finishes the season well

People have been patting Suisham so much on the back for his being 9 for 9 so far that they have failed to see that most of his kickoffs are only reaching the 10 to 15 yard line area. If this kid from Nebraska has enough leg to consistently put it in the endzone on kickoffs, then that makes him a weapon that immediately improves our special teams.

Mike Pouncey

Although he was not listed on All American teams, I think that other knowledgeable NFL teams realize that he is playing out of position at Center . He is not having a good year, but he will be drafted as a Guard. I think that he will go no lower than the middle or lower 2nd round. I hope that we can get Pouncey along with one of those prized OT’s. It seem like teams are going for the pro potential OL’s in the early rounds followed by DB’s. Good RB’s & QB’s, once the staple of early picks, are now going in the 3rd and 4th rounds (unless you are a Adrian Peterson or a Peyton Manning. I hope that we will go the way of FA and get a couple young future Pro Bowl CB’s for a good price. Doing this might allow us to trade up and get our desired (and much needed) OL’s. We have built up a good stock of backups at other positions with last year’s draft.

by Allen F on Dec 16, 2010 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Nice

I like the way you assumed we are going to win the super bowl. I doubt he would last that long, though.

by bandwagonshmandwagon on Dec 16, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

You Are Correct

Mike Pouncey is an excellent Guard and will go in either the late first round or the middle 2nd round. If we can pick up some quality young Pro Bowl potential CB’s in FA, then we can trade up and get a quality OT and Pouncey at Guard in the first and second round of the draft. Because we had such a good draft last year we have quality backups at LB and WR – so we can concentrate on CB’s in FA and OL’s, a DE and a NG in the draft. With the 7th (Heaven) SB in our possession and obtaining these draft picks, we will be well set for next year also. Sounds like a lot of wishful thinking, but it is VERY attainable. We have a lot of talent on this team.

by Allen F on Dec 17, 2010 4:35 AM EST up reply actions

There are no such things as
young Pro Bowl potential CB’s

avaliable from FA. They are either older or to expensive. The place to get young Pro Bowl potential CB’s is through the draft.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Dec 17, 2010 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

You have a good point, but I disagree.

Good CB’s in the draft will be gobbled up quickly. The others will be 2 to 3 year projects. We already have some of those (e.g. Crezdon Butler, Keenan Butler and Ryan Mundy). We need someone who has had extensive playing time (and was good but not great) the last years couple years and gotten experience but has not played with a Defense like ours. Now that their contract has expired they (will of course get more money) but will not be able to demand the money of a Troy Polalamalu and have the opportunity to play on the best Defense ever. This of course means LARGE future contracts. I know that I sound like a dreamer, but I am sure that there are a couple of them out there.

We only really need 1 good OL

Both of our starting OT’s will most likely be coming back next season (Colon’s rehab is progressing abnormally fast) and Pouncey is going to be a stud.

The position that needs to be upgraded the most is LG. Kemo, as much as he tries, is not a LG. He makes too many mental mistakes and is not a good enough pass blocker to protect Ben’s blindside. He needs to be moved to RG where he can just maul people. We need a stud at LG and we’re set with Foster possibly being a starting RG in the future.

I think Kemo can be a left guard. He pulls as well as anyone and is made worse when the rest of the line sucks too. With one more piece (if Colon is signed and comes back healthy) the line could be good. We’ll still need some young depth cause Jonathan Scott’s not doing it for me and Legursky seems to have regressed.

Steelers won't reach for an OL in the first round

I think if the value isn’t there, then they’d go DL or CB. I have to admit though that WR Julio Jones from Alabama looks like he’d be a great fit for the Steelers. I’d love to have he and Wallace as starters with Sanders and A. Brown as our 3rd and 4th WR’s for the future.

no way

Julio falls past 20

And no way we draft him

He takes a few plays off and has questionable hands. Typicall anti-steeler WR.

I like Mikey

Mike pouncey is definately worth a first round pick. Like his brother he is one of the top 3 athletic OL coming into the draft. If we wait until the second round he will be gone. I am willing to trade away a draft pick (possibly the 5th rd) to trade up in the first rd a few spots to get him.

The Pouncey’s display a rare agility that we have not had in the trenches since Alen Faneca in his prime. Putting him at Guard will give us two awesome Guards and an awesome center, traps and pulls will become effective again. Foster is too slow to pull, and I think Essex may actually be a better RT, when you break down his technique, but is not starter quality IMO.

I like Kenrick Ellis at NT, thats a good pick and he’s enough of a sleeper to fall to the 5th or 6th rds.

While I like Watt we need an OL more, I trust in Hood to carry the torch, and there will be many big bodies brutes we can get later in the draft…Then again 6-6, 292 with an insane skill set ( if he comes out he’ll go quick I’m sure) he wont be on the board for us to grab.

Not a bad wish list for the draft

 better it would be;
With LT/OG Benjamin Ijalana or Cannon in the 2nd round
and OT Chris Hairston in the 4th.

The more I learn -The less I think I know! Just enjoy reading and sharing.

Establish the run

It doesn’t seem to me that we’ve truly committed to the run for the bulk of any game since week 4. Since Ben and our banged up O line keep getting pummeled, I can think of no better time than this week to pound the rock over and over and over again. We shouldn’t need a bunch of points to beat the Jets, and you always hear that O linemen prefer the run game (especially when they keep getting spanked with sacks). It certainly plays more into the strengths of our line at least. Of course, the added benefit is that play action passes actually begin to work when teams are forced to play the run. Oh, and Mendy has been looking really good out there – fighting hard for every inch.

Just a thought.

Not a strong draft for the OL this year; Mike Pouncey looked bad as a center this year

This is not a great draft for OL. It is so weak that the kid from USC who has declared Tryon Smith, could go top 10 and they are projecting him as a LT because he hasn’t ever played the position. He is 6’6’’, 285 lbs. now and people are projecting him to fill out and grow into a really good, athletic left tackle. A guy that the Steelers might consider at the end of the first round is Gabe Carimi from Wisconsin. He is 6’7’’, 325 lbs and plays left tackle for Wisconsin. In all reality, a lot of scouts don’t believe he has the feet for LT in the pros and is strictly a right tackle. However, we all know the Steelers have a mind of their own when it comes to how prospects will fit with this team.

After watching Mike Pouncey play in 3 games this year, I just don’t see where he is a first round pick. He is strictly a guard and can’t shotgun snap the ball consistently if there was a gun to his head. Mike Pouncey is not Maurkice, as least he hasn’t shown it thus far.

BTW, I’ve seen Watts play in a couple of games this year and he is the closest thing to a young Brett Keisel that I’ve seen in awhile. I actually think Watts could come in and be in the team’s DL rotation next year. I still haven’t seen the next Aaron Smith yet in the draft, though. Those do not come along that often. Do keep in mind that the Steelers like their first round picks to be young (they don’t mind taking a junior or a redshirt junior), with a lot of ability who can come in and learn how to play the Steelers way before they get on the field. A lot of people in the 2010 class have been the exception (Pouncey, Worilds, Sylvester, A. Brown, E. Sanders).

And as far as our OL, I think that the decision to cut 4th round pick LB Thaddeus Gibson versus LT Tony Hills tells me that our new OL coach thinks Hill (and also rookie OL Chris Scott) have something for him to potentially work with and bring out.

love the last sentence

Sound analysis. No reason to keep both C. Scott and T. Hills unless Kugler’s high on at least one of them.

Had to keep both this year because of all the injuries at tackle, but your logic makes sense to me.

I wish that at least one of them would show something *now* - we are hurting.

What is the problem/weakness with Hills besides inexperience? Also – since the season is over for the UFL, CFL and Arena league, why aren’t we looking to one of them for an All League FA? Admittedly they are weaker leagues, but remember we picked up Warren Moon and Kurt Warner from a couple of those organization.

by Allen F on Dec 16, 2010 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

the thing is we DO NOT need Mike. P to even touch the ball what so ever, that’s his brothers job. The one and only skill i want to see from Mike. P is blocking ability, being a back up center is something that can work on but is not a necessity. Cutting Gibson to make room for McLendon was the dumbest move this season besides not signing any FA O-linemen. I’m over hoping Hills, C. Scott, or even J.Scott can even be serviceable back ups. Definitely not worth cutting a young solid LB.

Depth at LB

With the depth of bodies and talent available to us at LB cutting Gibson was the best thing for Gibson. I imagine had he stayed on the team he would have started eventually… several years from now, he had too much talent in front of him. Gibson was a project at best, trading him gives him the opportunity to develop while seeing playing time. Our needs on OL are too great to ignore, I am thankful that Kugler is here to nurture the young talent we do have.

Mike Pouncey would be a better Guard

Last season Mike was LG, and rated one of the best in the country. He chose to stay to play center to improve his draft stock. He is still a skilled blocker and very athletic, I say he make a late first round pick based on those qualities alone. maybe even as high as the 20th pick because of Maurkice’s playmaking abilities

by dmdjr1 on Dec 17, 2010 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

You are probably correct, but.....

Wish we could get him along with a top quality OT. He was not a good Center this year. Hope that will make his stock diminish in the draft. I am sure that other teams know that he is a top quality OG, so we had better grab him if he is available when our turn comes up. Would like to get a quality OT OR Pouncey with the 1st pick – then pick up the other in the 2nd round. OL and DB’s seem to be what most teams are looking for in the first round. I think that we can pick up a quality NG and DE in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Am hoping that we can fill our CB need through FA – and hopefully at a reasonable price.

by Allen F on Dec 18, 2010 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the update on Colon, great to hear he is progressing so quickly. Hopefully I’m not reading too deeply into that but it leads me to believe he is also healing well, meaning this was not a career ending injury. It might slow him down enough to require him being moved to RG, which is fine IMO, but obviously leaves a hole at RT.

I think Chris Scott has the potential to be a quality if not franchise T, at either side, obviously if he can’t handle LT he should be able to fill the RT spot. That’s next year at best though. I’d like to see Hills get the start in the Cleveland game if we have the #2 seed locked down.

Mike really wanted to be a first round pick, but as close as he is to his brother I think reuniting might now be more important. I doubt he is tanking his senior year to lower to draft stock, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the desire to play with Maurkice again isn’t clouding his focus. Even if we have to move up to get him I think we should. IDM to us if he has the ability to ever play one down as a center, we need a solid RG and he has shown he can play there at a high level. As close as they are they are also just as competitive with each other, and I would love to see them anchor our line for the next 10-15 years.

Butler got a hat last week and he is someone to watch for the rest of the season. I’m hoping the coaching staff sees enough improvement in him that they think he could push to break the lineup, even as a nickel back, for the postseason. A change or two in the secondary would be a new wrinkle other teams would have to adjust to, which is in our favor defensively.

Sleeper pick for Steelers if he declares -- G Cordy Glenn, Georgia

Sounds like the Steelers type of player for interior a guard and is listed by Pro Football Weekly as the no. 1 G prospect if he declares in the draft.

I think the Steelers will also look at Orlando Franklin, T/G, 6’7’’, 325 pounds from the University of Miami. He played LT this year and RT with the Canes the year before. PFW has him rated as the no. 4 rated OT on the board. So, if the Steelers go with Watt in the first round, they could be picking from Glenn, Franklin and Pouncey in the 2nd round. Sounds like Glenn is a lot better football player at G than Pouncey. Plus, you gotta like 6’5’’, 335 lbs. Below is a link for PFW’s top 5 OTs and Gs. Also, Tryon Smith has declared from USC so that probably pushes everyone else down a notch or two as well, which is good news for the Steelers and other teams needing OL help.

Like the read on OT Marcus Cannon from TCU

3. Marcus Cannon, TCU
6-5 3/8, 363, 5.36

A lightning rod for debate in the scouting community, Cannon can be criticized for his inability to sort out protection and raw positional instincts. Evaluators say he pitches too many no-hitters and will require significant development in the pros. Nonetheless, he has rare size, ridiculous weight-room strength and is very athletic for as big as he is. His size may be ripe for a move inside, but whether inside or outside, he must show that he can do a better job of sinking his hips and playing with more consistent knee bend. Late in the season, he began to show more aggression in his play, but there are times it appears the light bulb is flickering. It may take a year or two for him to feel comfortable in the pros, but coaches and scouts will salivate when he finishes testing. He does possess first-round physical talent.

Sounds like a VERY good project if we could get him in the 3rd round or later – but I am sure that someone will snatch him up before then. Big strong Linemen are what teams are looking for whether he is ready for instant play or not. Example Jared Gaithers from the Ravens.

Rose Bowl Play

Didn’t show much at all. Evaluation of his weaknesses was VERY accurate. Needs a lot of work. Should be available in the 4th round or later, but might get chosen earlier only because of his size.
