Top 10 reflections after Jets game
1) They aren't who you think they are.... The Jets are not as good as the media wants them to be. After numerous non-calls and momentum shifts going the Jets way, the Steelers still had a chance to win at the end.
2) The Steelers offensive line isn't quite as bad as I (we) think they are. As an ardent critic of our O Line play, I was pleasantly surprised they played remarkably well for most of the game yesterday. That said, see #1 because other clubs have made them look horrible.
3) They (Patriots) are who they think they are. Until someone kicks their ass, the Baahston Area Baastards are still the bully in the AFC, if not the entire NFL.
4) Arians is who he usually is..... hmmmm.... what can you say? Generally he called a good if not very good game. He pulled a BA at the wrong time and the wrong place. Blame Scott, but it's not a sound call in that position. Good coaches put their players in the best position to succeed. This was not a good call. Schottenheimer called a good game. Personnel groupings and mix of run/pass were effective. The critical 3rd and 4th down plays won the game for the Jets.
5) Big Ben is what we think he is. Awesome, frustrating, inspiring, maddening, unflappable. Part riverboat gambler, gunslinger, and ice man in the clutch - he also hurts his team with the occassional bone-headed maneuver. Taken in whole, who wouldn't want him back there when the game is on the line? I know I do. Like Fran Tarkenton, John Elway, Bradshaw and even Johnny Unitas - the guy who can pull a victory from the jaws of defeat has the brain chemistry to make some mistakes too. His two fumbles while struggling to escape the pass rush hurt. He has to take care of the ball or throw it away.... live to fight another play. All that said, he will be back making plays for a long time to come.
6) Steelers defense can't win the game themselves.... not every week. Defense played well again. They did not have the big turnover which could have sent the game sailing into the Steelers hands. Give credit to the Jets and Sanchez there. Keisel had two huge knockdowns. A little disconcerting how they could not get Sanchez to the ground. I didn't think Timmons had a good day at all. If they didn't run an edge stunt with him coming outside, he was often a step behind the play and was put on his back numerous times.
7) Special teams are still a concern. They were a losing phase in this game. The old adage usually holds true - you have to win two of the three phases to win the game. I would say the defensive and offensive phases were almost even yesterday. The kicking game for the Jets was the difference. Of all things a head coach can exert his influence upon - it is on special teams. Who he makes available, how they are used, picking up advantages on film study, playing the field position game, Tomlin and the Steelers lost that phase and gave the Jets the yards they could not gain themselves on offense. Suisham himself has remained clutch.
8) On any given Sunday..... the 2010 Steelers exemplify another old NFL saying. As many of us have said - they are capable of beating anyone, anywhere, any time. A little bit of 2009 remains such that the opposite seems eminently possible no matter the opponent's record.
9) Polamalu's timing is good, in more ways than one. The injury comes at a good time. Even though they would have been better with him, I didn't think they needed him vs the Jets to win. The game was close, winnable and probably should have been a win. They don't need him against Carolina and they shouldn't need him vs the BrownEyes.
10) The Steeler's receiving corps is peaking coming into the playoffs. I was not happy with Wallace early. He didn't finish a few plays when he thought he was being fouled. Keep playing!! The zebra is going to make up his mind without your histrionics. Aside from that, they play fast and had success against a good defense. Sanders is getting better every week, Wallace is a factor every play and even Spaeth looks better than years past. Hines Ward is Hines Ward.
Can't say I'm satisfied with a tough loss. However, the Jets, Jags, Colts, AFC Worst and hated Ravens are all teams the Steelers can beat. The Pats are on a different level, but it's 3 weeks until the first playoff game. Time is on the Steelers side right now. Thursday is going to be tough but at least we're at home. Browns game may be tough again simply because of the rivalry and the look ahead to the playoffs. Two wins will go a long way toward setting them up in the playoffs for another AFCCG against the Pats.

Really good thoughts
I too thought the O-line played above the line (pun unintended) this week.
After this week I am 100% convinced that it is worth the roster spot to get a kicker who can kick it into the endzone every week. There have got to be some soccer players out there with the leg to do that. maybe a former keeper? Those guys can hit a soccer ball most of the length of a field, I have to assume a tee’d up football would be nearly equivalent. Billy Cundiff can hit the middle of the endzone on every kick off even in the cold weather. That’s worth more to me than Arnaz Battle. Sorry Arnaz, but you, Anthony Madison, and Keyaron Fox are too many headhunters for ST if we’re giving up these kinds of returns. And Fox and Madison can play on the other phases.
I would love to see the Jets again in the post-season. I think that game is a easier win than almost any other AFC playoff team. Probably KC would be easier.

Agree on the kicker who kicks into the end zone, start at 20 everytime...I will take that. Then you don't need the Madisons and Battles for SPT only
on the fanpost…
4) Where were the red zone crossing routes and slants? Looked like it was all curls and digs
8) One could say that because we lost close ones to Balt, NO and NYJ and got handled by NE that we are not capable of going deep into the playoffs. I think we have not put it all together yet. I seriously cannot remember a game (maybe Oakland) where the D, O and SPT all played well.
14) Wallace was beating the Jets deep even though he was held….not sure why we didn’t go back to that after the 1st qtr. Agree these receivers are solid weapons. Would like to see Sweed come back and be a red zone jump ball guy next yr.
oh and also on BA
What’s with the 8 TE targets? Can’t remember ever targeting Heath 8 times!
Spaeth is BA's guy
Offering no proof but what you can see on the field, I believe BA was instrumental in getting Spaeth and keeping him in the offense. The guy has some serious flaws but has played better this year.
He was a big part of either the game plan, or what the Jets were giving. Go ahead – beat us with Spaeth seems to be part of how things went. He made some plays but one play kind of sums up what he can do – Ben hit him on an angle route in the second half where there was nothing but grass in front of him for a good way. The pass was a little hot downfield and Spaeth stumbled as he caught it and then went down when a defender showed in the area. If he is more athletic, it looked like it could have been a huge play.
They obviously liked his height at the goalline but in the end the guy is limited. He may have a good game coming up – 1) Heath may be out awhile and he will get opportunities and 2) he feels like he owes the team. I hope he rises to the ocassion but he’s not Shannon Sharp or Antonio Gates….

could be the fact that the Jets were missing their starting safeties
They were probably trying to take advantage of Subs. Problem is we were also using a non-starter to try to take advantage of them.

i wish we would target Miller 8 times we would be tearing up defenses. I’m not convinced Spaeth will be ever worth keeping, at this point DJ is a better TE, he is far better blocker and already showed he can make some catches, get DJ more involved.

We have to understand...
… BAd wants to prove everybody wrong about the run game. Sure he has to make it look good and call ground plays (since he was dictated as such earlier), but I feel he calls them to his stubborn notion of Ben & our WRs (and thusly the Steelers) being a Passing team.
Example: the other day in the Pats game, Brady was pinned similar as Ben in the EZ on 1st down. Pats called a run up the gut for about 1.5 yard gain. Next play (2nd dwn) Pats call a play action where Brady had options because of the D line-up and Brady actually ran for about 6 yards (could have had the 1st down but didn’t want to mess-up his hair).
BA called one of his standard 3 first down plays ( that fill up about 35% of the Steeler game footage and are more than well known), and picked the one play that pulled guards and opened the gap that Scott could not fill. Of BA’s standard 3 first down plays, this was the lowest percentage he could have picked.

No joke, we might have done ourselves a favor by losing to the Jets
I think the Jets and the Ravens have better personnel/D schemes designed to beat the Patriots. If both of them stay in, it creates a bigger chance of the Pats running into one of them.

Arians/ Spaeth? WTF!
Sorry but Bruce called a horrible game! I hope he is not part of the Steerlers org. next year, or when ever football starts again. Totally out coached. He is probably our weakest link this year- behind Reed! And fn Spaeth—can you catch a fn football. How the hell is this chump even on the Steelers- he sucks? We could take almost any 2nd or 3rd string TE and do better? Sorry, but i take games very seriously and personally- hell i am The Steelers Fan, but last night was ridiculous. Bottom Line- get rid of Arians, and get rid of Spaeth-NOW- before they cost us any more games.
he made 1 bad call
the rest of the game was one of his best.
ONE REALLY bad call...
… and a slightly lesser amount of his normal BAd calls.
But I will admit, it was a better than normal game for him – but this ain’t saying much.

john stephens...i was thinking the same thing.
baltimore ran all over the pats* last year. the only time i cheer for the ratbirds is when they are playing those cheatin stankin beantown bastards. lol
Timmons was leading tackler
10 Tackles, three assists I believe. He also had some good pass coverage. I think his monster games at the beginning of the year spoiled us all a bit. The guy played a great game last night.
Yes, he was involved a lot
but the Jets were running the ball effectively during critical points in the game.
Not too often a team goes over 100 yards rushing on the Steelers.
I was referring to him on numerous runs ending up on his back, some while assisting on the tackle. He also was chasing late on some 3 step pass plays. He just looked confused at times.
"Franz" in NoCal
Don't forget that Timmons makes plays that are ran away from him
You probably are including a lot of those. I only saw one play were he didn’t attack when he should have and fell back. He covers a lot of guys butts out there.

What I'm saying is he gets to plays that a lot of guys don't
so he may seem out of place.

Well my reflection is that Colin Cowherd is a idiot
he somehow tried to say that Jim Leonard and Troy Polamalu hurt there respective teams in the same ways. Never mind that Jim Leonard plays Rex Ryan’s system perfectly and Troy, well I don’t actually think he knows how to play in LeBeau’s system he just runs around and makes plays. Then he said that Sanchez and Roethilisberger were the same type of QB, to which I call bullshit. sanchez would have thrown a pick-6 to ice the game if he was leading the Jets on the drive to try and win the game, that Ben was leading.

Colin Cowhead?
Not sure how he got into the conversation but yes, many times he displays an incredible myopia for his own view of the game. He comes up with these observations or theories based on what, I don’t know. He seems like a geek trying to correlate office politics or junior high dynamics to how players do their jobs.

Cowherd gets very proud of himself...
It’s like he has read a couple of how-to business manuals, and tried to apply it to every part of life. He does come up with some decent observations from time to time, but the truth is he knows next to nothing about football.

We miss you Heath...
Speath had a few key drops, and was not a threat in open field. Im not saying Heath is a game breaker, but he has great hands and aside from a few horribley timed mistakes in the past few years has been a rock for Ben.
The ball was bouncing the Jets way last night, if they play again Im gonna bet the farm on pittsburgh.Without Troy our D is just different, its not nearly as dynamic and while still good, its just missing that X-factor Troy gives us. I hate the Jets, but I agree with John S, I feel we match up well against them, and they could be a problem for the Pats down the road. Let’s just pray we take care of Carolina and the Browns and get that 2 seed.
I can't say any loss is a good loss...
but I don’t think this one is particularly damaging. Without Troy back there it’s no surprise we lost this game. He is the most important player on this team, and that includes Ben. While the defense played well at times, it simply lacked the teeth it’s played with in recent weeks.
It’s strange, but when Ben is out the team takes an us against the world mentality. When Troy is out the defense totally loses it’s edge. The more I see it the more it’s obvious, Troy Polamalu is the most important player on this team…and I don’t think it’s that close. If we sub Ben for Troy yesterday, I’m telling you, we win that game. That’s not a knock on Ben, that is simply an acknowledgement of how devastating Troy is when he is on the field and playing well.
If Troy is healthy for the playoffs, I love our chances…no matter who we play.

The defense has performed pretty damn good without him this time around. Polamalu is the heart and soul of this D, and probably of the team. Without him the Steelers are ordinary defensively.

That way Troy doesn’t have to cover our mistakes that often because the coverage will be better.

Agree that we can't keep relying on our D to win the game.
Come playoff time, our offense better find a way to convert RZ opportunities. Also, I don’t think Ben is having the best season so far; at least not up to his own standards.
