"In the 1970s Led Zeppelin and the Pittsburgh Steelers...drifted together in a vague continuum of big money, fast cars and prestige" . - Hammer of the Gods by Stephen Davis. I love this quote and I wanted to share it. It may be the only time you get the greatest rock band of all time and the greatest sports dynasty grouped together in the same sentence.
It also got me thinking. As we enter a new year and move further away from 1970s (and as I get older) two things just never get old, listening to the mighty Zep or watching Steeler highlights from the 70's. I'm not from Pittsburgh and I've never been to a Led Zeppelin concert (Page/Plant not the same. but very good) yet these two iconic groups of men made an impact on me that lasts to this day.
I grew in NYC but it wasn't Jets and Giants jerseys abound but a legion of black n gold instead...and of course the jackass who liked he Cowboys. To this day I still watch games with some of my old classmates wearing my Franco or Swann jersey. The jerseys are a liitle bigger now but the passion is even bigger.
So as we close another season this weekend...and another year.. I toast the 70's Steeler and the mighty Zepp.
Thanks for creating a powerful legacy that cotinues to this day. I think I'll go with the Franco jersey this weekend but I'll mix in the Houses of the Holy t-shirt.
Happy New Year.
