Is this true about Big Ben????

I live in NYC and don't hear all the gossip about BB and others in black and gold.  I hear that BB is a creep to reporters(who cares) and the fans too???  Is that true?  I find it hard to believe and frankly, DON'T!  I hear that his teamates don't like him either, especially Hines.  I understand the jealousy, the money, the early fame and success but really, is he that bad?  This team was in the wilderness without him and we suffered heartbreaking defeats for 26years before him...Anyone remember the wegie thompson days?  Please tell me this is all nonsense!  My hubby bought me an official Number 7 jersey in 2005 for the superbowl run..

thanx

True Story!

I was at a Gold Star Chili joint with a friend of mine who HATES Ben,(He’s a Bens-Gals fan!), and in comes Ben & 2 guys bigger than him by far, They order & sit down. When their food comes, my friend says, “Hey Ben! You’d think a guy who makes millions for a living could afford some better food than Gold Star!”, Ben, without missing a beat, picks up one of his chili dogs as if toasting him & says, “Never forget where you come from babe!”, and almost sticks the whole thing in his mouth laughing!

It was classic! He paid for our lunches as well. I’m a die hard Steeler Nation type, but that instant made me understand that we, as Steeler fans, have a very special young man at the helm! I love tellin’ that story! :-)

He seems like a nice guy that is very personable and would sit down and have a beer with a fan if there were at the Bar

Well

I don’t think that Ben’s teammates dislike him. As for the thing with Hines, what two friends have never fought before. Really I think the media blew that whole thing out of proportion. As for the fans and media, it has been said that he dislikes being in the limelight, and that would explain any past hostility to reporter. I havent heard any reports of him being unkind to fans, but I don’t know Ben personally so I can’t say for sure.

BTSC Obituaries

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

Some friends of mine in another state

met him at some charity event, and said that he was nice enough, but not really interested in much of anything non-sports related. Someone else on this site related a story about his dad sitting next to him on a plane, and said that Ben talked to him the whole flight, and was very friendly.

There’s always going to be the stories about somebody famous acting like a jerk. We all have bad days when we act like a jerk – it’s just that nobody gives a hoot except our nearest and dearest. And as a society we love to elevate people to god-like status, and then look for any opportunity to rip them down as soon as possible – see Brittany Spears. I don’t think she is particularly talented, and I don’t think she is very smart, but the poor child had way too much money and way too much fame way too early in life, and apparently no sensible adults to help her deal with it, so it is hardly surprising that sooner or later she would screw up big time.

by Rebecca Rollett on Feb 11, 2010 10:36 AM EST reply actions

I've had people say I'm a jerk

people I am close to get wind of it and say, “No way, unless you knew him before 1997.” I think people have an image of what I should be all the time and if I don’t live up to it, I’m a jerk. Anyone can be a jerk at times and not everyone is going to like you. Some people say bad things about you because they feel rejection or jealousy. There are plenty of reasons why.

When you are in the puplic eye you have to have some kind of defense. You always have the chance of a person feeling they can just step into your life because they feel they know you. You have to check people’s angles all the time. Everyone handles it differently. People (fans) don’t think about these things at times because the world is about them and their feelings. All I can say is, some people need to lighten up.

A lot of those stories come from people running into him in daily life. He is a notoriously bad person to wait on, horrible tips, very demanding and often downright rude. He will blow hot and cold, some days being very approachable others he blows people off.

Some guys are like that, I mean it isn’t like he dances with flowers for a living. You are going to get great stories about him and horrible ones, just like you get great games and horrible ones from him.

I don’t expect the guys to be nice all the time. To kids or at public events he should put on a show if he feels like being a jerk, but if he’s a jerk in a bar or restaurant, that’s his own time and I don’t really care. Micheal Jordan was a huge jerk, it was part of the same attitude that made him one of the best ever, but he knew how to put on a nice show for his image. I don’t expect Steelers to be role-models, I expect them to win.

Jordan used to cheat on his wife all the time

As well as having huge gambling debts, which might have played a role in his father’s death.

Michael Jordan is not a jerk, I played basketball with him.

100% ABSOLUTELY TRUE STORY. Gotta find the pics, their buried in photo albums from before the time of digital cameras.

Longs story short, his brother lives (lived? Dont know if he is still there) on the street right by me. I graduated High School with his niece, one of my friends. I ended up getting invited to a family BBQ, and he was there. We played a game of pick up in their back yard (had a half court), I got be on his team, and it was easily one of the greatest moments of my life. The guy is a real class act and can still ball like no other. It’s surreal actually playing with him.

BTW, Fayetteville NC. Seventy-First High School. It was years ago so I dont remember his nieces name, but you should be able to verify at least the first part of my story.

I have no personal experience with Ben. I have never met him. A couple girls I know from Pittsburgh said he is rude when out in the bars. A couple other stories have circulated about the entitled athlete since high school and arrogance.

Personally I don’t care. Ben is not my idol. He is QB of my favorite football team. As long as he continues to deliver W’s, playoff appearances and Lombardi’s I do not care if he doesn’t always show class when circulating with us…the commoners.

A lot of stories have circulated like the ones you mention, 5020. And if he didn’t have a little bit of that cocky/confident air, we probably wouldn’t see him so confident out there, making plays all over the place.

By the way, 50, I saw your post about Rubin’s Deli in Parkersburg. I’ve worked in Parkersburg for the past six months, but had never tried it. The day I read your post, I had to stop there on the way home. Good food. Though I may never go again because there’s definitely a racist undertone there. Anti-Muslim jokes litter that wall.

by Hines Ward on Feb 11, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

He is by all accounts an egotistical jerk - but who cares

I’ve heard several stories from people who met him that he wouldn’t give them the time of day or made rude comments or just flat-out ignored anyone in the room except the good-looking women. One person I know works at the private airport where the Stillers fly in and out of, and after Ben’s facial reconstruction, she didn’t recognize him and asked who he was, prompting the response “Fred Flintstone” and a dissmissive tossing of his keys to her to park his car for him. This is one arrogant, classless guy.

BUT

He’s our quarterback and I would want no one else on the field for the Black and Gold!
As 5020 said, he’s not my idol (that would be Drew Brees), but he is my QB.

My girlfriend asked him for a picture in the Plainum Club at a Cavs game. He said “only if you sit on my lap”. She got the photo! I wasn’t there but found it funny. His track record with the ladies isn’t all that great. When his shit went down in Tahoe I was not surprised.
That is beside the point though. Number 7 is paid to be our qb and get Ws. I could care less what he does with his personal life or how he acts in public unless it affects performance on the field(i.e. 90’s Cowboys). Attitudes and egos are common place in the nfl, think of their circumstances with money, women, and media. The exception is a rarity.
Read “Boys will be Boys” by Jeff Pearlman. It is a great read. It details the chronicals of the Cowboys dynasty. You wouldn’t believe he shit these guys were doing. Ask any Cowboys fan though and there is no way in hell they trade any W let alone 3 rings for a team of standup individuals.

Didn't someone on this site post about going to the same school as Ben?

He comes from the upper crust family, father is a rich dude at some plant in Findley. He is the exact prototypical asshole jock that we all knew in HS. Why that bothers people, Ill never figure out. We cant all have winning personalities. I know that people have fantasies that our star players have hearts of gold and would give anyone a minute of their time. Very few rich/famous types are like that- just about every rich person I know is a prick in some way, either they are chiselers, misers, or rude, expecting, etc. I think it goes with the territory.

Yep, graduated two years ahead of him

Only ran into him a couple times at Miami when I was living on the quad located near the stadium. He appeared to be the typical jock absorbed in football and chicks. Nothing unusual there. Most if not all celebrities act in similar ways. I mean they preach to us about being moral and responsible and yet they are amoral themselves. Look at Tiger Woods and John Edwards, etc . They ask us to donate money for charity and they themselves only give 1 million dollars yet they make 20 million per movie.

I have to say Ben is my favorite QB and will always be my favorite QB but he is not my role model. Anyone makes an athlete or celebrity as their role model is just setting themselves up for disappointment.

that the majority of people saying that ben is a jerk or classless or whatever come from ohio. And who can blame them? The best QB to come out of there in awhile, and he goes to the hated Steelers and remains undefeated in his home state for 5 years or so (this year sucked) and wins two Superbowls… yeah those people are jealous and that’s how rumors grow.

I gave a good try to meet the Big Boy during the buildup to XLIII (I did get two feet from Batch, small consolation), and supposedly I just missed he and Ward one night at their hotel, but all I would say to him is “thank you and good luck” and get the heck out of there before he had a chance to say or do anything bad. He doesn’t care what some idiot like me has to say. He has important business to attend to. Winning Lombardi’s, drinking bourbon, and banging chicks. And he’s entitled to as much of all that as he can get his big hands around. If I heard he was building a turkish pleasure palace on the shores of the Monongahela with a 500 strong harem culled from all corners of the realm I’d be happy to hear it. That’s the spoils of war.

This is necessary if you want the guy to throw into triple coverage with less than a minute left to win a Superbowl when an easy field goal could tie the game. Then again maybe you don’t want your QB throwing into triple coverage to win a SB!

Well, it's king of like going into a fight

If you have any doubt in your mind that you might lose, you have, in effect, already lost. You must go in to that contest with all confidence that you will beat the crap out of your opponent and emerge victorious.

You cannot be humble in your arena and become a champion. Just doesn’t happen. You must have that “killer” instinct, and that doesn’t come from being meek.

Ben might be an asshole, but I, for one, would rather have an asshole and a couple more SB’s than a nice guy and only 4…
