Safe Safety Bet Myron Rolle

The last post I did was about another possible # 1 draft pick that would give us some security at the safety position. I want to propose a maybe long shot. I do not mean a long shot in terms of ability but maybe a long shot in terms of draft selection. Myron Rolle will also be up for selection in the draft. Keep a good eye on him. It simply depends on what kind of day he has at the combine. Many may think that he may have lost a step or two because of his desire to pursue higher learning. However, this may not be the case. This also maybe exactly what we are looking for. I just want to give the fans some hope. Last season in my eyes exposed the simple fact that Troy is awesome on our defense. He needs someone to hold it together in that back field. I do not propose that Eric Berry, Earl Thomas, Myron Rolle can fill the shoes of Troy. I simply say now we know how good Troy is lets get him some help a that position. Its like Ben is our QB but lets get him some help at back up via Dennis Dixon. I have got all the faith in Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin, but I just want you guys to be as surprised as I will be if these guys are available and we don't pick them up. This must mean whatever selection they pick it must be a dynamic player. I have always loved what the Steeler's have done on draft day. Some of the players we have on the squad today may not be as dynamic as we would like them to be. Some players just take more time to grow up in the game. Lawerence Timmons, Limas Sweed, just to name a few. Were these picks bad? Not really. Limas could catch the ball better but what if next season is his season. Lawerence should maybe have started full time at ILB. Maybe next season is his season. We do not know but what we do know is the possibilities. The picks are not the bust just the players. Here is what Myron looks like.

Despite postponing his NFL career to study for a year at Oxford University, Myron Rolle ranks among the top safeties entering the 2010 NFL Draft. And while some may question whether his absence from football will negatively affect his ability to perform, those that know Myron, including legendary speed and performance trainer, Coach Tom Shaw, recognize it simply as time to further enhance his abilities and hone his skills.

Shaw, known for training the last nine Super Bowl MVPs and 118 first-round NFL draft picks, has been working with Myron since he graduated from Florida State in 2008. As a result, Myron’s speed, strength and agility has not only been maintained, but significantly improved, which will solidify his place among the top safeties selected in the 2010 NFL Draft.

“Myron has trained along side several of my NFL clients. His skill sets are comparable to any defensive back that plays on Sundays. His athleticism, mental toughness and knowledge of professional defensive schemes will assure him to be a success at the next level of competition.”
— Tom Shaw

During his formative years, Myron attended the Hun School of Princeton, where his athletic achievements on the football field gained national recognition. Following his senior season in 2006, ESPN’s recruiting services ranked him as the number one high school football prospect in the country, and his remarkable abilities earned him a staggering 83 scholarship offers from Division I institutions.

Myron ultimately chose to attend Florida State University where he continued to excel on the field as a safety and three-year starter.

In 2008, he earned Associated Press 3rd team All-American honors and was named 2nd team All-ACC by the Football Writers Association of America. After a 2008 regular season game against the rival University of Miami Hurricanes, Florida State’s longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews remarked that Myron played “the best and most complete game” that he had ever seen a safety play during his 25 years of coaching.

Following the 2008 regular season, the Florida State coaching staff presented him with the Bill McGrotha/Spirit Humanitarian Award. Myron was also placed on the watch lists for the Thorpe, Bednarik, Nagurski and Lott trophies, all highly coveted defensive honors.

He is very impressive

I wonder if he’ll be there in the middle of the second…

2nd round availability

He could be there because he sat out and his numbers were not as impressive as maybe a Eric Berry because of the defensive scheme FSU runs.

Getting Rolle in the 2nd would be spectacular

Although in that case, we would probably go for a lineman(offensive or defensive) in the first round.

Rolle

If the steelers don’t take Thomas. I would be really be upset if they pass on Rolle. I think I think Rolle would be more durable than Thomas and has the brains to make him a very good player. If he has the heart and desire he could become one of the best.

I have asked FSU fans what they think

And they see Rolle as a high-reward, low-risk type guy. He has a great football IQ, no character or off the field issues, can learn schemes quickly, etc. They thought that he would be a steal in the middle of the third round, and that even our 2nd rounder was worth it.

2-4th round

Unless he blows up the combine. He’s not as fast or athletic as some of these other guys. But certainly Steelers character, smart, and he was the one reported interview of ours at the Senior Bowl.

by syrsteelerfan on Feb 12, 2010 1:13 PM EST reply actions

Repost: I'm not jumping on the Rolle Express Bandwagon

A lot of people laud him for his intelligence, but there’s a difference between book smart and football smart. He had a decent, but not great, career at FSU. Even last year he was projected to be the 5th safety taken in a pretty weak draft class behind Sean Smith, Louis Delmas, Patrick Chung, and William Moore. I’m not saying that he won’t be a good player in the NFL, I’m just not going to put him on a pedestal because of his academic accomplishments. Considering the Steelers need depth at safety, I wouldn’t be opposed to them taking one in the first 3 rounds and still taking Rolle as well IF he lasts until the 5th round.

by big_jay71 on Feb 12, 2010 1:28 PM EST reply actions

Even this year..

he’s rated as the 9th or 10th best safety. He’ll go somewhere between the 3rd and 5th rounds.

by big_jay71 on Feb 12, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly

I don’t think anyone is putting him on a pedestal for his academic accomplishments. They are doing so because he is a good football player who skills translates to the next level. Its not like he’s Craig Krenzel or anything. You don’t get to be #1 in your class by being a slouch, as stated before the scheme is pretty much why he doesn’t have a lot of picks. That being said we’ll see what he can do in the combine.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Feb 12, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not going by only stats. But he’s not as great a prospect as many claim him to be. He’s a good football player, but there are better options available. He was number 1 in his recruiting class, but there are plenty of players who have been top rated but never made an impact in college, much less the NFL.

by big_jay71 on Feb 12, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

What about Greg McElroy?

He was a Rhodes Scholar and a national championship winning QB. What makes Rolle better than him?

by StoneColdSteel on Feb 12, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldnt say

better, maybe as good, he doesn’t stand out in this years group but like I said lets wait and see what he does in the combine. The only thing I didn’t like about him was of course the lack of picks which could be explain by the type of defense he was in and his 4.5/40 speed which is just slow, but if he moved it up to a 4.4 then that is good because now he has average speed for a safety. Earl Thomas is good and Morgan Burnett. I’ll be happy with either of the 3.

I mostly agree almost with all said, but, lets suppose somebody tell Us that He knows about somebody that has a level

near Rod Woodson´s Football IQ, What do We do? Taking at the FIRST, b/c Woodson has not more SB rings mostly b/c (sorry to say this) He has no Offense, but in Our current circumstances, I for the record We MUST Take Myron Rolle in the 1º ROUND. And maybe 2º Cam Thomas, 3º Gerhardt or Any good LT left behind. Maybe even If Tebow is still in the 4º also take Him. Its almost Impossible that We can have Bulaga, or Iupati.

Yes, I also accept that he was not T Best S, but that year He was a Jr., but even in that circumstance, as everybody knows "if t S is good He will not have many INTs ", and any draft choice as everybody knows is only a bet, and also as many coaches had told before: “at this level is 95% a psychological issue(s)”, so even in the case He is an potential Eintein", lots of teams also want Him on their rosters, starting from browns, rams and lions.

Also lots of talkingheads mostly around nfl network are saying that T guy is a 1º rounder.

I also am affraid that t raiders take Him, He can be a very good factor of change in any team.

So He is a guy that for shure He will be working on any issue.

That could solve if We cannot trade down if We does not have access to any position according to best available athlete.

Right now Our problem is getting accustomed to Tomlin´s rules, at least He (Rolle) could start communication between parts, and so on….

Yeah, maybe the guy is a little bit fueled, but that is what the Dr. recommends for this team, We must fix Our head first.

translation issues. Like he has a ‘degrees’ sign instead of ‘st’.

I take his posts with a grain of salt, kinda like J-man’s. Just gotta understand where they’re coming from. It does make for a hard read, but you can get the gist pretty easily.

Rolle's ranking

Scout.com has him ranked 15th among safeties right now and 176th overall. They’re usually pretty accurate (in this kind of educated guesswork) and if his ranking is any indication, he should go somewhere in the 5th round. Now I can see him jumping up to maybe the 3rd (although that safety class is pretty strong) but talking about the 1st is really pushing it!

Consider it unleashed!
