Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

Draft

This one could-and will-shock and confuse some people, possibly provoking them into schoolyard taunting. Moving on!

Star-divide

I don't see anyone that the Steelers really like in the first round. Most of the OL and DL prospects are reaches, and there isn't a need to fill the secondary with starters. I see them trading down into the second round.

Round 2: Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee-He could fill in at either NT or DE, depending on how Pittsburgh views him. He could fall a little bit because of the combine. Either way, this is a good pick.
Round 2: Chad Jones, S, LSU-A versatile contributor that has played safety and nickel back. He's an athlete who could have a career in baseball, but he chose football. Lastly, he brings value as a PR.

Round 3: Alex Carrington, DE, Arkansas State-Surprise! He had a big Senior Bowl, and has shot up the depth charts. He has size (6'5", 284 lbs) and the ability to play 3-4 end, 4-3 end, or even NT.

Round 4: John Jerry, OG, Ole Miss-Huge (6'6", 314) and a mauler. Fits a need at a lower pick (higher value).

Round 5: Rashawn Jackson, FB, Virginia-SURPRISE! Big Ben had a monster season, and Mendenhall broke 1,000 yards. How much easier would that be with a true FB? Jackson is the highest-rated true FB in the class (best blocker).

Round 6: E.J. Wilson, DE, North Carolina-A 6'3", 289 riser that can fill 3-4 end. Plus, at the senior bowl, five tackles and two sacks. That kind of production translated to the NFL is big.

Round 7: Kion Wilson, ILB, South Florida-A 6'0", 234 LB (remind you of anybody?) that can be brought along until he's ready to take over at one ILB spot. Timmons and Wilson would give this ILB crew speed.

Possible UDFA: Brandon James, RS, Florida (Small but slippery. Could be useful).
Erik Cook, OL, New Mexico (Could play guard until he's ready for C. A developmental type)

Dan Williams

is currently seen as a mid first rounder, fringe top 10 pick. Can’t see him still being around in the 2nd.

+1

No way he’s there in the 2nd, even the 1st pick in the 2nd. We’d be LUCKY if he’s there for us at #18. Look at where BJ Raji went last year.

If he’s there, take em, no doubt about it. But I wouldnt move up to get him. Stay put and see who’s available out of him, Bulaga, Thomas, Trent Williams, or Odrick.

I like the Jerry pick at #4, but his stock is fast improving, and we might have to get him in the 3rd if we really want him.

I think

At this point Williams could take up the Big Snack diet, walk the 40 yard dash, take a dump on Mel Kiper and Lane Kiffin’s lawns, and still be a first round pick. That’s how big the scramble is for Nosetackles right now.

I can't see us avoiding the CB position entirely

Although if Haden is gone at 18 we will almost certainly go for another position.

steelers trade down to the second round?

and get no extra picks in return? dont think so…

i think they’ll love getting Iupati at 18 and then i like the picks you have. but yeah theres no way Dan Williams is going to fall to us even in the 1st round let alone the 2nd

I agree

He could compete with Summers and Davis, although if he can’t beat them out…

I like the look of Reshawn Jackson

I’m wondering how similar Virginia’s offense is to when Miller was playing in it. Anyone know?

I can see the possibility of trading out of the 1st round, but not to only get a 2nd round pick.

Exactly

I’d think at least the 2nd, a 3rd and perhaps a 5th. I kinda stopped reading this when it was suggested the Steelers are going to trade out of the 1st rd. I’m still of the opinion that they are going to trade up to somewhere around the 11 spot. Why not? With all those young guys that made the roster last year I think the Steelers can afford to trade up for a guy they think will be an impact player for years to come. I think if no one grabs Williams in the top 10 and the Casey situation isn’t resolved, the Steelers will make it happen.

I find it more and more unlikely that they will go OL with the 1st pick. Something I didn’t realize until recently was that Stapleton will be back next year. Granted, that isn’t cause to jump up and down, however, I think the FO and coaches like the pieces in place right now and will draft more so for OL depth only.

The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

Plus

I don’t mind trading up, as long as it isn’t so far up that it costs multiple 1st and 2nd round picks. The other problem of trading up, is the amount of guaranteed money that goes along with the contract.

I don’t want to see us trade back in the first. We don’t get the opportunity to pick this high very often, we need to take advantage of it.

The last few years omission of us taking an offensive lineman on the first day, has inured me to it. This year, I think I may have finally come to understand the FO"s thoughts on the subject. If your QB won’t get rid of the ball, what is the value of drafting O-linemen in the first round?

by alfresco on Feb 15, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Draft a lineman

If the guard from Idaho is there, take him. If the center (pouncey?) is there, take him. I have not done my draft work yet, but these guys look good. We need to get better on the o line, and in my opinion, center is our weak link.

by scottd7 on Feb 15, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Except for the fact that, including long snappers,

The Steelers have 5, count ’em, 5 centers either on the active roster, IR, or PS…

I agree with you on one point, center IS the weakest link in our O-line chain. Whoever starts this upcoming season needs to be much better than they were this last one.

agreed i like Iupati

but we’d have to trade back if we were targeting pouncey. he has a slim chance of being taken in the first round, so trading back to 29 or 30 and taking him would be better.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Feb 15, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Trading back that far?

Why not just trade all the way out of the 1st round then? Steelers could still get Pouncey in the first half of the 2nd, according to draftniks. Plus, they could even pick up another 2nd rounder, and maybe another 3rd, as well…

by Steel Spike on Feb 15, 2010 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

yea trading back from 18 to 29 would be big

so we could easily get their late second round also, im still of the opinion that we take iupati at 18 though.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Feb 15, 2010 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

I actually think trading out of round 1 would have better value

They get even more picks, and still wouldn’t have to worry about guaranteed 1st round money.

Besides, with all the great D in this draft, the top O-line talent should drop considerably.

by Steel Spike on Feb 15, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

yea as much as it pains me

i think trading up is a mistake this year. its unfortunate because we dont often get this high of a pick and could use a stud player, but with a class this deep on defense and on the Oline (pretty much our only needs) we could use as many picks as possible. i would love it if we could trade back to around 24 or 25 and still get Iupati and an extra 3rd rounder

by steel.curtain.number2 on Feb 15, 2010 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Entirely possible

by Steel Spike on Feb 15, 2010 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

Get them both.

Iupati will be there at 18 but not long after, we should take him with 18 then pouncey could very likely still be there for us in the second round.

Another possibility would be trade back to the early 2nd and take pouncey then in the late with our other 2nd rounder take johnson from Bama. He lead the way for the heisman winner, won a national championship, and is also a giant specimen (6’8", 315). He’s not as good technique-wise as Iupati, but center is more important than guard for us.

we don't new starters on the O-line

we need new starters/ future starters on the D and we need them now

I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Feb 25, 2010 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

Deep defensive draft.

I think we can get players in the 3rd and 4th round that can start in their second year and contribute as a rookie especially later in the season as they become more comfortable with Lebeau’s system.

by themissouristeeler77 on Feb 25, 2010 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

In the past that might have worked

but with all the teams switching to 3-4 it going to be hard to get them. And you can also get good Olinemen in later rounds too.

Sorry to take so long to comment

but I had to send my maid to get the smelling salts. An interesting theory, but as soon as I ran my eye down your list I knew it was wrong, wrong wrong, because it didn’t contain a single TE. Most of us are convinced, I believe, that BA has requested that a TE be drafted in AT LEAST every other round… : )

Naturally. All proper ladies

have at least several to attend them, including one to rush for the smelling salts when one feels faint. And I am nothing if not proper.

Okay, so I don’t have a maid of any description. Nor do I own any smelling salts. Unfortunately we live in degenerate times, and the dear Queen (that would be Victoria) would be shocked at what the world has come to.

What?

1) top O-line talent never drops, in fact, more teams than ever are reaching for OL talent. Iupati and Bulaga might both be gone by 18

2) Why would Steelers trade down in 1st for MORE late round picks? They might drop a few spots if they can get their man (whoever that is) and pick up another high pick (this year or next), but they don’t need a 9-10 man draft this year. What they need is 2,3,4 high impact guys that can step in an deliver. Not another L Sweed or K Urbik.

by Watty4ever on Feb 15, 2010 7:04 PM EST reply actions

i disagree

we need depth at almost every position except receiver. we desperately need help in the secondary, need depth at OT and need a new RG, need linebacker depth inside and outside, could use receiver help at tight end behind heath miller, another RB who can spell mendenhall. with how deep this draft is, we need as many picks in the first 4 rounds as possible.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Feb 15, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

when was the last time

the Steelers traded down in the 1st? colbert only stays put in the first or trades up, if as history has shown, i think their thinking is you want to get the best player you can, and trading down in the first doesn’t help you do that, we’ll see but I doubt they trade down

Lamarr Houston

Whats the story on this guy? I hear he may be an under the radar guy whose a possibility as a 3-4 end depending on his combine performance? Anyone know anything about him?

by Hpepperdog on Feb 17, 2010 3:13 PM EST reply actions

No Dan Williams

1) Dan Williams won’t make it out of the first round or possibly first 5 of second round.
2) After drafting resigning Hampton for 3 more years we won’t draft a NT that high.
3) If absolutely necessary Ziggy could move inside to NT for a couple weeks due to replace incase of injury or a couple plays to give him a Hampton a breather.

I'll throw my hat in

Finally got around to my mock draft, this isn’t a dream draft but tried to pick what I thought would be there(although a couple might be a stretch). I did add in compensatory picks just for extra fun. For the record, I know there are a lot of Mays haters out there but if he drops even close to us I think we should do what it takes, not as a safety but ILB, at that position I think he could be an impact player of the bat. Well here goes
1-Mike Lupati OG Idaho
2-Patrick Robinson CB FSU
3-Koa Misi OLB Utah
4-LeGarrette Blount RB Oregon(I’d actually take him in the 3rd but I don’t think they will)
5-Myron Rolle-SS FSU
5-Riley Cooper WR Florida
5-Ted Larsen C NCST
6-Sergio Render G VT
7-Trindon Holliday WR LSU
7-Adrian Tracy OLB W&M
