NFL Announces Franchise and Transition Tag Amounts for 2010
Of course, for the Steelers, the position we're most interested in is the defensive tackle position where Casey Hampton plays.
Defensive Tackle
Franchise Tag - $7.003 million
Transition Tag - $6.353 million
Last year, Hampton made under $7 million, so like GM Kevin Colbert has said on the record recently, the organization would probably prefer to work something out a bit 'longer term' with Hampton rather than paying him a such a huge chunk of change in '10. Because the '10 season looks like it will be uncapped, the Steelers could afford to do so, but as Colbert mentioned recently, the organization plans to treat this coming season as if they'll be operating under a salary cap.
Stay tuned.

What is the difference between the Franchise Tag and the Transition Tag ?
(apart from $650,000)
The franchise tag the player is yours, you force them to stay.
A transition tag allows other teams to make offers to the player, you can match or let them go and get draft pick compensation.
If you remember the Steve Hutchinson to the Vikings drama started when the Hawks transitioned Hutch and the Vikings gave him the poison pill contract the Seahawks couldn’t match. One of the main points in the ensuing argument was that the Hawks dropped the ball when they tried to get cheap and save 1 mill by transitioning him.
If the Steelers are willing to lose Hampton they could transition him, making sure they either get him for one year at 6.353 or they get a draft pick when someone offers him a better contract.

not quite
you receive NO compensation if a team signs away a transition tagged player. a franchise tagged player can either be exclusively tagged or non-exclusively tagged. if non-exclusive, other teams can make offers which you then have a right to match or take the compensation.
That's alotta dough!
Getting near the time to poop or get off the pot with Hampton…haha

I think transition tag is the way to go
It would likely mean that we keep him, however even if we lose him we can get a high round draft choice in return

would be awesome
to land a really high one and be able to take suh or berry… of course i’m dreaming, and i dont think that would make casey upset, he said they promised him no franchise tag, they didn’t say anything about a transition tag……. and he didn’t either

exactly,
I’m looking at KC or maybe Buffalo, then we could use that pick as trade bait to move back and get a late 1st, 2nd and 4th (or something)

How can you know all these kids?
I don’t know how anyone can continually stay on top of all these low-recognition college students..! (esp year in and out)
btw, I think your sig quote is wrong.. I think it was 5 Lombardis at the time Tomlin said that? unless you are paraphrasing and updating. :)
well to be honest
I spend a stupid amount of time reading all the internet blogs I can and during the season i just watch film.
and it was 5 Lombardi’s at the time but I updated it when I got a new account

I wonder what the compensation would be.
I like CH but seriously, how high a draft choice can you get as compensation? I would think he has 2 or 3 years left in him. I think a 3rd or better would be great but I would doubt we would get a 1st.
I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

We may well get a first
I dont think there is a concrete way of knowing what the compensation would be, but I think it would be high for the best NT in the league

compensation for a non-exclusively franchised tagged players
is 2 1st rd draft picks. always.
compensation for a transition tagged player is nothing.
thanks man, So a non exclusive tag seems the best option then

it maybe worth pointing out it’d pointless to transition tag hampton (not that you said we could/should use the transition tag here).
if tagged, you pay the player the transition tag or 120% of his last year salary amount, which ever is higher. since hampton’s cap hit was around 6.5 mil, he would have to be tendered at 7.8 mil regardless if franchise or transition tagged. so it would be best to franchise tag him exclusively (so other teams can’t sign him) or non-exclusively (so we’d get compensation if he’s signed away).
