Baltimore signs another killer!

The Ravens have another jail bird in their nest.  Today it is reported that they signed Donte (Wish I was John) Stallworth to a one year contract.  Baltimore already has a player on their team that has been previously charged with murder in their over the hill(and overrated) captain Ray (Jay) Lewis.  But Ray (Jerry Lee) Lewis was aquitted and exonerated on all charges.  So what is Baltimore to do?  Wait ten years and sign a convicted murderer(manslaughter)?  Well, that is just what they did today.  So I am asking two questions.  One, What does this say of the Baltimore franchise?  Giving a guy a second chance or dancing with another devil?  And second, What effect if any will this have on the field?  Improve the team or not?  Ok Steeler Nation....have at it!

Irrelevant

This is a guy who was less than mediocre for the browns two years ago, and then spent a year out of football. If this guy is their #3 I will be very surprised.

Also the Ravens are an organization of thugs and criminals, and the Ravens fans have come to terms w that. So I would say this generally leaves them unaffected

Reputation

IMO hes the 3rd best player on that defense. Should not have been a pro bowler this year. Right now he is overrated. Career wise one of the greats

I agree with this. Right now he is running on reputation. He is not as talented as people say he is. It is like Jerry Rice or Emmitt Smith at the end of their careers, but he is still an all-time great linebacker/murderer.

No, but not the greatest linbacker ever...

As espn would have you believe. What about Derrick Thomas, Lawrence Taylor, Jack Lambert, Ray Nitschke, Jack Ham, Dick Butkus, et al. And the past few years has been overrated as his play has trailed off.

Anyway, way to focus on minutia.

But I don’t think Willie Parker went to the combine. That may be his pro day forty you speak of though.

Combine is by invite only, and I doubt a third string RB who took little to no carries in college would even be a blip on the radar of the folks making the combine invites.

I absolutely agree with you

NYSF4. I’m not a fan of this sort of discussion. If someone is exonerated, we should drop it. And as to Stallworth, what happened was horrible. But I suspect that if you lined up all the guys in the NFL who have driven under the influence, the line would probably stretch from DC to Canton. The fact that most of them managed to not kill anyone is more likely luck than anything. You would think that Stallworth would prove a good object lesson. You’d be wrong, too. People never learn.

The OJ Simpson case is completely different

The only reason OJ went free was because of poor police work and mishandled evidence and bad lawyering.

by Hpepperdog on Feb 17, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

From Wikipedia (unfortuantely)...
At the trial, the vast majority of testimony was either inconclusive or supported the defense’s contention that Lewis acted solely as a peacemaker. ESPN legal analyst Alan J. Baverman said, "as to Ray Lewis, there is no evidence that he assisted anybody in a stabbing or encouraged anybody to do a stabbing which would make him a party to felony murder, malice murder, or felony assault with a knife.

The charges were dropped in exchange for Ray’s testimony which still wasn’t enough to convict the other two men involved. Ray was also fined $250,000 for not committing a crime. No other suspects were ever charged with the crime.

On April 29, 2004, Lewis reached a settlement with four-year-old India Lollar, born months after the death of her father Richard, preempting a scheduled civil proceeding. Lewis also reached an undisclosed settlement with Baker’s family.[

Don't come to a Steelers blog and expect Ray's declining play to not be exaggerated

you’re getting all pissy because you opened a box of crackers and god forbid, there were crackers inside! you admitted yourself ray’s skills have fallen off after 32, and that’s how he’s overrated. he’s being treated as if he still has the skills he did at 28 but he’s 32 and not the same. if he was so damned good, when he willingly tested free agency, someone would have picked him up, SOMEBODY. but instead, he had to go back to the Ravens and come up with some crock about how he really wanted to stay with the ravens the entire time but said he was testing the market in order to work them for a higher contract (wink wink.)

he’s overrated to the point that announcers insinuate that he causes his defensive coordinators to get head coaching jobs and that rex ryan should be thanking ray lewis for his new job. i don’t think any linebacker in the history of the game is going to get people head coaching jobs, period.

you want to whine about the fact that there is no evidence that ray lewis killed anyone, so its so totally wrong for people to be harshin on his highness’ mellow by saying he’s a murderer! but, there are plenty of “retards” at baltimore beatdown that call Ben a rapist any time any steeler fan goes over there, but you don’t hear me bitching about there being crackers in my box of crackers

"First of all, show me the hard evidence that Ray Lewis killed two people. "

Hey I’m not here to poo poo the ravens or ray ray right now. But Malor, look at the facts of the situation:

The charges were dropped in exchange for Ray’s testimony which still wasn’t enough to convict the other two men involved. Ray was also fined $250,000 for not committing a crime. No other suspects were ever charged with the crime.

and

On April 29, 2004, Lewis reached a settlement with four-year-old India Lollar, born months after the death of her father Richard, preempting a scheduled civil proceeding. Lewis also reached an undisclosed settlement with Baker’s family.

So, two people died of stab wounds and no one was ever convicted. The two guys must have knifed themselves then. And why would an innocent man pay two settlements to victim’s families?

So, people died and as a result of that Ray Lewis paid their families off. We have the bodies and an admission of at least some responsibility. What, do we live in Pakistan? If he wasn’t a rich athlete, he would probably be on death row right now!!

You know he was involved. You can’t deny the facts presented above. They’re not evidence for a court, but they are facts to be considered.

But yes lewis was not convicted of anything, and I am really ready to drop it, especially considering the problem #7 is having right now. Then again he was offered a settlement by that dingbat are her moron lawyer, and he didn’t take it because he wants to prove he’s innocent.

"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."

Because a family mourns over the loss of a loved one does not mean a person is guilty of murder.

The poor judgment of Stallworth to get behind the wheel of a car was the only mistake he made. Murdering vs. Manslaughter are to extremely different things and you should pick up a book and learn to distinguish the two.

Ha ha

Put me in my place? Geez, I didn’t know. Anyway, the point of this was a discussion on whether or not this will help Baltimore and if this shines a negative light on the team. Which was the EXACT discussion on ESPN’s NFL LIVE today at 4PM. People looking for an argument and trying to rewrite facts made this a mockery. We need more people on this blog that were adults in 2000.

by CookieShalom on Feb 17, 2010 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

dude

“we need more people on this blog that were adults in 2000,” you serious? did you even read what you wrote.
Way to be hypocritical….

You should just say sorry, that maybe you stepped out of line with the words used in your post. Then we can all carry on with this discussion that you want, will Stallworth make the Ravens better,

by shleeve on Feb 17, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

"Dude"

I am not sorry though. Nothing I said isn’t based in fact. I lived through the Ray Lewis story. Read the newspapers and watch ESPN. None of us knows what happened either way, with either situation. All I am saying is I want to discuss the Stallworth signing, and that people who keep defending the Ray Lewis thing have to understand that some of us aren’t looking for pointless agruements on whether or not he did it, and have more knowledge about it than just quoting Wikipedia. Some of us actually lived during that time. Some of us might have even lived during the OJ trial. So for the last time, discuss Donte’s signfigance on the field, not this immature bantering about things NONE of us know whether or not happened. Ok “dude”.

by CookieShalom on Feb 17, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

If you want to discuss the football side...

Leave the rest out. It’s pretty simple really. If you had said that the Ravens had signed a player with legal issues, even if you had said the Ravens signed a convicted killer, that is fine. I would have ignored this post as I ignore numerous posts meant to demean another team.

Nothing I said isn’t based in fact.

And “The Blair Witch Project” was based on fact too. Facts are proven. “Based in fact” and fact fact are not the same thing.
None of us knows what happened either way, with either situation.

Which would mean you are willing to admit that you have a high probability of being incorrect too, would it not?

I’m not saying I know exactly what happened, I don’t. But the bottom line is the guy was not only not convicted of a crime which you claim he was guilty of, but there wasn’t enough evidence to even try him for said crime.

If no one knows what happened, then how come you think you have the right to call him a murderer. I lived through that stuff to. I know more about the situation than you ever will. You had no right what so ever to create a post like this.

by Mr MaLoR on Feb 17, 2010 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

You are literally the biggest POS I have come across on this blog. Sorry for the name calling everyone, but this guy is stuttering with his comments. Look at the title of this post, then all of a sudden he wants us to discuss if this was a good move for the Ravens? I really hope you never come back to these blogs again. You are the reason why this whole situation happened. You created a post about a topic you know absolutely NOTHING about and tried to fix your mistake by denying what you put in your post.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Feb 17, 2010 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

listen here

I was commenting more on the manner in which you made your post.
If you wanna go ahead and call Stallworth a murderer then go ahead (hes not, btw), thats your choice. But you can’t be all surprised by the criticism when you make a post with ignorance and immaturity.

Immaturity on your part sir, heres some examples: putting dude in quotation marks (an obvious mock of me using it), accusing people of getting their info from wikipedia (which by the way, after citations, is as accurate as the encyclopedia), assuming you are older than those you are arguing with, going back and highlighting sentences in your original post, saying that NONE of us know what events occurred yet you call Ray Lewis and Stallworth murderers when they weren’t guilty of it.

I am not defending Ray Lewis (I hate him) or Stallworth, they both screwed up. I am commenting on the manner of post, which for lack of another word is well, dumb.

You could have just as easily said, “the Ravens signed that Stallworth guy, hes had trouble with the law, just like Ray Lewis.” Gets your point across

The point of discussion was whether he will help us or not? 90% of your post was about Ray and Donte being “killers.” Your last two sentences finally asked if this will help the Ravens.

How about we just don’t need people like you on this blog. It was better before you ever joined.

agree with you MaLor

for some reason I actually seem to quite like you, what you say is normally pretty fair.
Lewis is over-rated now, he is no longer the best ILB in the league as so many people would argue, he is still however in the top 5, probably dropping off quickly (not watched him enough to see how he slows down).
But I agree, Lewis is no murderer, he mixed with the wrong people in his younger days and that led to him being involved in something that I can safely say nobody reading this knows ANYTHING about what actually went down, the truth gets bent, superstars become hate figures or heros.

you don’t really have to defend them. You can just ridicule that guys post because of its ignorance, but at the same time you can mention how Stallworth wont help because the Ravens suck and Flaccos eyebrow (not plural) will obstruct his vision, inabling him to throw an accurate pass to Stallworth who’d probably just drop it anyway……..because hes a Raven.

To Blitz and every other dedicated BTSC writer etc.

To be fair to BAL Warrior, I came across as egging him on, even after calling MaLor on the sexual remark, and for that I apologize. tobiathan is on the mark, and I should have been consistent and discouraged the religiously oriented remark as well.

BAD FORM

I love the rivalry of the AFC North and especially with the Baltimore Ravens, but the title of the post and the content are in bad form as well as inaccurate. I am glad to see Stallworth get a second chance because many people in this world just don’t give second chances.

by Piratefan13 on Feb 18, 2010 7:46 AM EST reply actions

wow...where to start...

Okay, first things first. If you roll over on a couple of pals and then settle with the families…you were not convicted in a court of law of being a murderer. In the eyes of the law, you are innocent. Now we all know how it works. Let’s stop calling Ray Ray Murderin Ray. It should be more like Murderin & Snitchin Ray. And, yes….his skills have declined because he is old. He is one of the top ten LB of all time though. As for Donte. The poor dude just had shit luck and this could have happened to 95% of everyone on this blog most likely. Since he manned up and stayed at the scene, just give the guy a chance to resume his career. I think his actions merit that much. My two cents. btw…GO STEELERS!

I drove drunk once. IT was the night after and we had crashed at the guy’s house. He woke us up and told us we needed to go before his wife got back with the kids from church. We understood and beat it out of there. I was on a Highway trying to figure out why my car kept trying to go to the left.

That’s when it hit me that 9 hours of sleep hadn’t sobered me up. I couldn’t stop on the highway, so I drove the rest of the way (15 minutes) home scared out of my mind.

I am very careful to never drive drunk, I had a friend who’s dad was killed by a drunk driver and lost three friends the night before their High School graduation to a drunk driver. So yeah, this really could happen to anyone.
