There are several reasons for writing this post. The Steelers aren't in the super bowl so the best things for us fans to talk about is free agency, the draft, and CBA negotiations. Many people have different thoughts about what should be done in the draft for the Steelers. Some say we should pick offensive lines or maybe nose tackle. While others believe that a Cornerback is what the Steelers need in the first round. Well I wanted to make my case and a case for Myron Rolle. A guy I think everyone knows about but hasn't really been discussed as much as some of the other options have, in my opinion. I wanted to dig deeper to find out why Myron Rolle?
So before we go any further you have to answer the question of what do the Steelers think they need the most in the draft. What is the best value contingent upon their needs, the players abilities, and who has been taken already. Also money has to be a focus also because well it is a business. Since Rolle is most likely to be a second round player to petition for him is to assume that the Steelers go elsewhere with their first round pick. What pick makes sense? It is in my opinion that there are only two position the Steelers will draft in the first round. That is offensive line and Inside Linebacker. Here is why, I think it is safe to assume that QB, TE, WR, RB will not be taken in the first round for obvious reasons, we already have recently spent 1st round picks on those positions - those picks have been successful. Well what about NT? NT is the most important position in the 3-4 defense it is said so the question is whether hampton walks or not right? I believe that does not matter. If hampton does leave I think they have all the confidence in the world that Hoke can do a good enough job. He doesn't have much wear and tear on him and he preformed admirably during the Steelers 15-1 season in 2004. Also the defensive line coach has here mentioned that Sunny Harris was learning the NT position. That gives us a backup NT also. So we have a proven player and an unproven player that will man the NT position in the event of Casey's departure. Steve McClendon is also in the mix for this position. Whether they draft NT or not will depend on how comfortable the staff are in these guys and how high they are on Dan Williams in comparison to everyone else in the draft.
Blitz has already went into why the Steelers most likely won't draft Corner back this year. So that leaves Safety as a need area but there is much question, beside Eric berry, if you can't get the same talent in the 2nd round that you may pick up in the first round at the safety position. The wise move is to get bonafide 1st round talent and value to your team. That is my reasoning behind why the Steelers will pick up Buluga or trade up and get McClain in the first round, I'm leaving more heavily on McClain sense the steelers have shown that they are content with their line.
So that brings us to Rolle who could be a steal in round two. Just a quick look at Rolle you'll find that he is 6'2 and runs a 4.5/40. We'll see in the combine if those times have increased or decreased. But ever since coming out of high school as the #1 player in the nation, Rolle had a quiet college carrer on the surface. I found a great write up on Rolle here. They do a great job explaining why Rolle only had 1 int in his carrer at FSU. We all know the kid is smart, but I ideally would want a FS with some hands. Rolle's stats show more of a Ryan Clark than an Ed Reed. But upon further reading I learned that Rolle played the rover position for FSU. Which means he
"is constantly lined up in the box to matchup against tight ends, running backs coming out of the backfield, and occasionally receivers in the slot."
Which is why most of us believe is why Troy doesn't have as many Int's year in and year out that Ed Reed accumulates. So in theory if Rolle was to play a FS role then he could use his play-making ability more like he did in high school which made him the overall #1 player. If that is case, a steel he would be in round 2.
