Source: Casey Hampton Agrees to 3 year, $21 Million Deal with the Steelers
"A source says nose tackle Casey Hampton has agreed to a three year, $21 million contract to stay with the team – with $11 million of the contract guaranteed."
No franchise tag needed as the Steelers make a deal to keep Casey happy and reduce the immediate need for a NT.

Amen!
Grab a FS in the second round, T in 3rd (using complimentary pick assuming we trade the 3rd to use for McClain and we get a 3rd rounder for Washington and McFadden), CB 4th, OLB 5th, DE 5th (Leftwich), S/CB 6th, FB 7th…. lol I haven’t done the research to get names but those position I think we should fill

Compensatory
IMO we will not get anywhere near the 3rd round for McFadden or Washington. I see the Steelers garnering one or two late round picks (5 or 6) for their FA losses.
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Really?
I mean they both were starters so thats why I thought so, Plus if you think of leftwich he got taken too but I didn’t think we’d get much for him

I don't think Washington was technically a starter

so 2nd receiver
isn’t a starter? Unless he wasn’t listed as their 2nd receiver, but I thought he was, otherwise it would be the same role that he had in Pitt.

Your right
The comp picks are determined primarily, by your leaving free agent’s:
1) amount of contract amount with their new team
2) whether they are a starter or a backup on the new team
Obviously a lot more is involved, but those are the top two.
To try and fail may be unacceptable, but failing to try, is accepting failure.
starter/backup plays no role
PLAYING TIME does play a role. so do any honors received. look below at the link for the most accurate breakdown
True
I agree, poor choice of words on my part. Shouldn’t have assumed a starter would have more playing time than a backup. Did not see your much better explained version below, before trying to come up with a quick summary of the two most important parts.
To try and fail may be unacceptable, but failing to try, is accepting failure.
I thought they got a 4th rounder for McFadden?

I did not hear that any compensatory picks were handed out yet. In addition, through the years I have noticed the Steelers very rarely get compensated with higher round picks. Just don’t see it happening although I could be wrong.
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Yeah I'm not 100% sure how it works
But he was a 2nd round pick and a starter. I’d imagine we’d get something better than 5th for him.

We will see and chat later about it. Over the years the Steelers have not been compensated by whatever formula is used. Maybe it will be different this year but the past has always seemed like Bill Belicheat* and Al Davis are divvying up the picks…
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Well...
we did have that one year where we had like a bunch of compensatory picks but only because we got hit hard in FA, I can’t remember what year it was.

AdamJT13 has the steelers getting THREE comps
he has us projected as a 5th (Mcfadden), 5th (Washington, and 7th (leftwich).
i personally think we’ll get a 4th for mcfadden (he’s borderline for last years & i’m biased), but there is no way we get less than 3 and worst case scenario we get a 5th, 6th, and 7th.
http://forums.kffl.com/showthread.php?t=247418
adamJT13 does a pretty good & fairly accurate job breaking down what criteria matter:
1) by far most important—the total amt the contract the player signs for divided by the number of years it’s over. (ex. if a player signs a 10 mil contract over 2 years, but was only paid 2 mil of in his first year will still count as a 5mil/year contract)
2) playing time calculated based upon % of total snaps played. since this really isnt available to the general public, it’s best to look at games played in & number of starts.
3) post season honors earned. probowl, MVP, all proteam, and other stuff like that.
stats DO NOT matter. how the team performs that a player joins or left don’t matter.
datruth listed the amts below, but something to keep in mind is NO performance incentives and some bonuses aren’t included. those things both lower mcfadden’s value and leftwich’s

by datruth4life on Feb 25, 2010 1:26 PM EST up reply actions
Should be 2 compensatory picks coming to Steelers
Washington, McFadden & Leftwich all got pretty decent contracts in free agency so that should help. (Washington got 6 years for $27M, McFadden got 2 years for $10M, Leftwich got 2 years for $7.5M). I’m thinking two compensatory picks (something like maybe a n extra 4th & a 5th).
The best way for the Steelers to pick up some prime picks is to trade down a few slots in the first round. Now that Snack is signed, they don’t have to take a NT in the first round, although if they think Williams is the best football player when they pick, then go get him. I wonder if D. Williams is that much better than the NT Cameron from UNC, who played very well at the Senior Bowl and probably could be gotten in the 3rd found.
I really do think the ILB McClain from Alabama is going to be a difference maker in this draft and could start later this year for the Steelers. I also like Kyle Wilson from Boise if the Steelers trade down, along with D. Williams, Odrick, Iupati, Pouncey and Weatherspoon. I wouldn’t mind the Steelers taking CB Chris Cook from Virginia in the third or fourth round and seeing if he can play corner and if not, then put him at safety. And lastly, I wouldn’t mind having Ryan Clark back, but only at the Steelers price. I believe his play is starting to slip, so I’d rather put a player in there whose best years are ahead instead of behind them.

Definitely relieves some draft pressure
Now, if they can sign Reed/Clark that would take some more pressure off. I agree with the no tag for Clark idea, too much money. IIRC i read that Clark is willing to stay and offer a “discount”.
Things can always be worse....

plus, i still have no clue how he thinks it’s just as likely someone would steal a transition tagged reed (only 2.6mil) as a transition tagged clark (6mil). troy’s cap hit this year is like 6.5 mil.
