Who was the last great cornerback, to play on steeltown. I miss the days of Rod Woodson. Trying to get a hold of him, to see if he could possibly make a come back lol. since the fans and the organization for some reason. Thinks we dont need one. I know people, im a steeler fan to, we love LBs. We dont need more LBs. Its called over the top. Every draft we think we need a LB. stop it, bring back porter and focus on a corner please. Now we risigned hampton. We should be good there. Arron smith and troy should be healthy. There's no reason to mess with the offense, other then a o-lineman (maybe). But seriously everyone knows it was the defense. So please woodson come back.

If we don't need more linebackers...

Why do you suggest we bring Joey Porter back? We’re all set, are we not?

I find this whole response highly unlikely...

As stated above, he wants to start somewhere, and most likely get paid as such. He has no reason to come back here for cheap, no matter how much any fans want him too (I’m in that group).

Secondly, if we are “all set”, as you have stated, we don’t need him anyway.

Beanie Wells is going to be a beast. Tim Hightower has some real talent too. Willie would most likely find himself on the outside looking in behind two much younger, more versatile backs.

Offense

all we need is a good Tackle to pick up.

As stated before with the CB thing.

You have currently, Ike, Gay, Burnett, Lewis for sure next year.

Say what you want but here are the facts.

Ike is a premier corner in this league. He goes up against the oppositions #1 receiver and has had some rough spot but for the most part you don’t see the ball get to his receiver too often. Just because the corner doesn’t catch the ball doesn’t mean he doesn’t defend the ball well, and for a corner, that is the most important job – defending.

Burnett/Lewis can fight it out for the second spot. Burnett did ok but did have that one, pick – Ike had how many? and we’ll see how he develops. Lewis was picked in the 3rd round, he is bigger and faster than Burnett, more athletic, we’ll see what we’ll have in him this year, last year he was injured. If Lewis is better than Burnett, let him have the 2nd CB spot, he will be better than any rookie that comes in outside of Joe Haden (they will need a year to learn the system) unless they get a high profile CB in the FA, and thats not happening.

Lewis/Burnett and Gay
Depending on who wins the 2nd spot at CB, there will be a fight for the 3rd/Nickel CB and 4th Dime. Gay has proven that he can handle this well and I believe that burnett or lewis could aslo, dime CB rarely gets on the field and will be going up against the 4th best receiver on the team or tight end or running back. I think these guys can handle that.

Other back ups – I can see us drafted a CB late in the draft to fill this role, someone who won’t see the field at all unless there is an injury. No point in putting a big money free agent here either, maybe a small signing or keep Deshea Townsend.

Now do you understand why CB is not that great of a need in the draft? We won’t pick up a #1 CB in FA because they cost too much and the only #1 CB in the draft is Haden and we won’t sell the farm to move up in the top 9 to get him. There are also questions about his game too.

I don’t know how I can say it any clearer. That is why people believe we will go ILB or OT in the first round, there are great prospects there and we have zero depth in those places. Don’t be surprised if we pick up an OLB before we pick up a CB in this draft because we have no depth there either. DE still needs to get young but CB I think is still in the mix just later in the draft. It makes the most sense.

by steelersfamily7@aol.com on Feb 25, 2010 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

So what?

He is one of those good players. Being on the Raiders has nothing to do with him grabbing interceptions or not. Revis had 6 picks and they “never throw to his side”.

Interceptions are flukes more than anything for a DB. They are too focused on staying insync with the receiver and batting away the ball than catching it. Picks generally come from either a really, really bad pass, a DL deflection, or some fluke bounce.

We like to gently mock Ike on this site

but we understand that he is doing an excellent job at his position, and we aren’t looking for our corners to make a lot of interceptions. Troy will take care of that for us – that’s what he does. As well as taking people out, freaking out the opposition, and walking on water. That’s why most of us aren’t in favor of using a high draft pick on a corner.

We can't rely on Polamalu

I think that is one thing we’ve learned from this year. He will miss a few games every year and we do need to be prepared for that. I know we drafted those two guys last year, but there is no guarantee that Lewis will bounce back or that they will pan out. There have been a few guys I have seen in any order behind Haden that could be first rounders, Kyle Wilson, Perrish Cox, Patrick Robinson, Kareem Jackson, and Devin Mccourty have all been projected as a first rounder over the past few weeks by various pundits and bloggers. Maybe we give a few of them a 1st round grade, and they fall to us in the 2nd round. As long as we get value for our picks, I am ok with us going in any number of directions. But I don’t think we should pass up a good value just because we picked two guys late last year, a little competition never hurt anyone

We are worried about Troy going down

That is why we want depth at Safety. However, since we do in fact have Troy we don’t need to draft a #1 pick to sit behind him. Farrior is getting old and we need his replacement sooner than we need Troy’s. That is why we want a McClain. Is this making sense yet?

by gimpsta7 on Feb 25, 2010 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

We have a number 1 Corner. That is what we are saying. We have depth at corner. That is what we are saying. We dont have replacement for Farrior: McClain would be that man.

The argument isnt just about McClain though, Iupati or Bulaga are options at positions of need too. Does it make sense how the draft works? You have lots of depth at a position (CB), so you dont draft there in the early rounds. You have minimal depth at other positions (ILB, S, OL, OLB) so you draft there. Preferably in that order. See, it is easy!

by gimpsta7 on Feb 25, 2010 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

Mendenhall hadn’t done anything till this year. but we had depth at RB because we had a young guy with the talent to play. We have CB’s that are young and have talent. LeBeau’s defense is pretty hard to learn, seriously, call him up and ask him, it takes time to learn it.

When you talk to him he’ll also tell you Lewis was doing a great job learning the system and was ready to contribute but injury ruined that. He should be a solid bet to contribute, and maybe start by the end of this season.

by GotWoodley? on Feb 26, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

From the front page

this is Kevin Colbert, the Steelers GM head of drafting guys, here what he has to say:

On the big passing numbers across the league and any added importance of having great DBs: “I don’t think you can ever minimize the importance of having a great corner or a great safety. Fortunately, we have a great safety in Troy Polomalu. Yes, the league has changed, it has become more of a passing league, but realistically, it’s still all going to start up front, because if you have a great pass rush, you might be able to get by with a lesser defensive back. So I don’t’ want to minimize the importance of any part of the defense in trying to combat the different offensive philosophies.

Straight from the horses mouth. Can you now shut up with this CB thing. Its really getting annoying.

by steelersfamily7@aol.com on Feb 25, 2010 12:51 PM EST reply actions

SF7, if you stick around

you will find that we all have our “la, la, la, I can’t hear you” moments, but there is a point that we get over them and move on to the next subject. We don’t have the slightest idea what the FO is going to do in the draft and in picking up free agents, although we can make some guesses based on comments from Colbert such as the one above. But in the end it doesn’t make the slightest difference what we think – the Steelers will do what they’re going to do. And thank heavens for that, because they know a whole lot more about it than any of us.

So do feel free to move to another topic now. I know it is difficult to do when one feels strongly about something, but the more one rails on a certain thing the less others pay attention to what one is saying. Honestly, we’re not trying to run you off – we just want to help you contribute to the discussion in a positive way.

Steelers could use depth at every position on D

Not to mention the D is much older than the O by far. I’ve been saying on this blog for some time that I have a feeling the Steelers are going to trade up to get their guy this year. It says here they go as high as #11 if they can manage to pull of the trade.

Having drafted two corners last year and signed the Snack today, it is looking less and less likely that the Steelers will use the 1st round pick on any CBs or the NT.

In light of today’s developments I’d like to see the Steelers go after the best possible FS to play opposite Troy in the 1st.

But how do you know both corners will make it out of camp?

There is no guarantee that both of those guys will be starters down the road or even be on the team. Remember when everybody thought Ryan Mcbean would be the next great Steeler d-lineman? And Bruce Davis was supposed to be special too.

And maybe it’s just me, but I think we need to upgrade that position with 1st or 2nd round talent. Cornerback and offensive line are the only positions that we haven’t drafted a 1st rounder for. I think it’s time we addressed that.

Plus I think Ike’s in the last year of his contract anyway. Draft his replacement now and give him a year as a backup to learn the defense.

by chewiesteeler on Feb 25, 2010 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

Haden, Donovan Warren, and Kyle Wilson could all go in the first round. Warren is my darkhorse for our 1st rounder.

With a good workout he’ll definitely be a 1st rounder. You guys should know by now that after the combine players that didn’t stand out before catch your eye. And his film is impressive too.

by StoneColdSteel on Feb 25, 2010 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

Haden is a potential difference maker (although I am wary that he is going to be a bust) but we have no shot at getting him and if we were in a position to take him we would be in a position to take Eric Berry (who we would move on faster instead).

Warren could be available in the 2nd round at our pick which says all you need to know about his true 1st round potential and I agree with you on Wilson as a dark horse, but he isnt a first round draft pick even though he may prove to be a first round professional.

I’d love to get Earl Thomas this draft, but it looks doubtful (he seems to be going up the lists) because he can play both, so even if he wasn’t ready at corner he could play safety or nickel right off the bat.

As for depth, we have CB depth, we need OLB and ILB depth. We need a young NT and Safety starter or depth. As for Offense we need an upgrade somewhere on the line, and tackle depth. Those are the needs, which ones we meet through draft, FA, or just make do without we shall see.

Injuries really hurt us last year, but even if all those guys are healthy we have a lot of older players starting and being reserves, we need youth all over the place.

by Phantaskippy on Feb 25, 2010 10:56 PM EST reply actions

as thomas goes up someone must come down

mcclain maybe? one can only hope.

+1 on everything else we need youth literally everywhere on defense (maybe not Corner, just need talent at corner)
i dont really think we need a young NT though… i’ve heard rumors that rashon harris is being groomed to be a NT, i’m not sold on that idea since we already have chris hoke. with casey’s 3 year deal coming today id like to get a NT in rounds 2-3 next year (2011 draft) and part ways with hoke. its unfortunate but it will be better for us
