How would you like Darren Sproles to be a Steeler?
Just read on NFL.com that sproles is going to become a free agent http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/02/26/chargers-to-let-sproles-test-free-agency/. I know we wouldn't join the bidding war, but that's an ideal #2 Rb.
The other good news with all this is the Rb free agent market is getting bigger and bigger. Thomas Jones should join the list soon. You never know maybe you get a decent Rb for a decent price in this market this year and save another draft pick for a different position.

The more the Running Backs appear in the Free Agency Market
The more I think Willie Parker will be staying with us.
Im pretty sure guys like Tomlinson, LJ, Thomas Jones and even Sproles will be more attractive to teams than the likes of Parker.
I think hes going to quickly realise that the market for him isnt big at all, and if he has to take a paycut, I’d think he’d rather it be with us than a foreign team.
Unfortunately, his starting days are over, which is a shame, but with the amount of success rookie running backs have no matter what the draft position, a 30 year old, banged up running back is not a viable starting option.
Give it a year or two and I think Parker will have retired. If he stays, I expect to see much more Mendy/MeMo combos with Parker getting the garbage time
Without me, youre only you
Personally, I think FWP will dandle his toes in FA
and come back, tail between his legs, and accept whatever the Steelers offer him. He’s a 30 year old RB, that has turned quite fragile lately. Sure he’s still fast, but not AS fast.
Never forget, Wille went undrafted, and has been here his entire career. Home is comfortable, home is safe.
There’s just way too much competition as it stands now with premier backs hitting free agency this year for Parker to matter to anyone else.

totally agree
Barring some kind of freak accident Willie will be in Black and Gold again. Unless we get a great deal on this flooded RB market and gets cut all together. There are also some really good backs in the draft this year making much less competition for all of these awesome backs out there looking for a home. We won’t be seeing many bidding wars this year. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing the steelers trade down their first round pick to possibly grab an extra slot in a later round. Probably won’t happen though, there are too many teams that want to trade down this year with much better picks than us.
Rambled on and completely forgot to address your post
Sproles would be nice, but he’ll get paid too much to go somewhere else.
Some team will try to make him the speed/3rd down back in a two headed scheme. A team like NYJ where he would compliment the power of Shonn Greene (based on my assumption of Thomas Jones leaving in FA).
I could also see teams like Cincy, Cleveland, St Louis, Minnesota (if Taylor leaves) etc showing interest
As for Parker, if he leaves, I see him going to Arizona. Not sure anyone else would have the sand to make a play on him
Without me, youre only you
I think
The Jets would only be interested in Sproles if Leon Washington isn’t healthy enough to play or if they are unable to get him to agree to terms. They bring similar skill sets to a team.
Shone Green, inspite of his great play near the end of the season, spent a lot of time injured. If the Jets lose Thomas Jones, I think, they will look for a second power back rather than aother 3rd down/passing/kr back.
I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

Another veteran RB on the market?
Sproles is a very attractive thought, no doubt about it. But if we’re not paying FWP then Sproles isn’t going to get the type of coin he wants in Pittsburgh.
There are going to be a lot of disappointed RB’s this coming season, who could help a team if they can get over the pride issue.
Or, there are going to be a ton of college backs getting jobs they other-wise wouldn’t even sniff.
sproles =
fast willie parker just shorter cant run up the middle completely dont need or want him, sorry he has better hands, which i know someone would mention but i prefer moore
wonder if he could be
converted to shutdown cover corner?

for kick returns:awesome
but I think he wants too much $$$ for the role he would fill, we are better with Parker as our speedy back, and mendenhall as our featured back. Parker can handle the work load if an injury puts Mendenhall on the shelf, or if he is fumbling too much.
but returning kicks, sproyles would be awesome,

I want Sproles
but it ain’t happening……
but that brings FWP closer to us, as someone already stated.
We Have the "cheap version" Sproles and.....
His name is Stefan Logan .
Honestly, I’ve always liked Sproles and what excitement he brings everytime he touches the ball. He is a dynamo, but will always be that “change of pace” back. ie…..not a starting back. We have that already in Stefan Logan. Essentially, they are clones of one another, both around 5’6, and both able to carve out an existance with the big boys because of their game-braking quickness and speed.
Sproles, IMO, is better than Logan because : 1)He’s a proven commodity where Logan is still making a name for himself. 2)Sproles can catch punts on a consistent basis. Depending on the field position, Moore fielded punts if a more sure hands were needed. 3)Sproles is a regular in SD’s offensive schemes where Logan was almost 99% special teams.
In a nutshell, I’d love to have Sproles but very unlikely due to the presence of Mr Logan .
I’d like to see more of Stefan this yr on the offensive side of the ball. Flanker screens, end arounds, that type of thing. We didn’t use him enough.
+1 also

I would like him to get a shot, and use the RB draft pick, on another LB who plays special teams.
To try and fail may be unacceptable, but failing to try, is accepting failure.
He got his shot
He was on the practice squad for awhile and wasn’t good enough to keep…so they cut him. They don’t have to give every guy a shot on the active roster because the fans love him. Also, notice when he was cut from our PS no one signed him.

If I were to discuss Redman seriously I would say I think he has potential to be a 2nd running back, his speed is an issue, and he does nothing but run so it makes it unlikely he’d ever get the chance, but he would be decent. Not enough speed or open field ability to be a starter. He has good instincts in heavy traffic and a good motor, that’s all he brings.
That would be seriously discussing him though, and I vow never to do that. Redman rules!!!! WOOO!!!!!
by Phantaskippy on Feb 28, 2010 1:48 AM EST up reply actions
Good point
but all we need is a #2 guy. I honestly would like to use logan more for the speed part.

Probably his girlfriend, like all women that are alive, thinks Isaac Redman is not only the greatest football player ever to live (Tim Tebow excluded) but also the prettiest thing she has ever seen.
Either that or the amazingness that is Isaac Redman is too much for him to bear and he is right now rocking back and forth crying and cursing Isaac Redman to his computer screen.

True
But I remember reading something in the post-gazette last year about Tomlin telling redman the only reason why he didn’t get a spot was cause of logan, we’ll this year. If redman doesn’t get a spot when they have another available then I understand. Mendy is the #1 back and I want him on the field as much as possible. If he is tired and there is a goal line situation I wouldn’t mind seeing redman come in, if its a passing situation or a play that we want to use speed, I wouldn’t mind logan coming in.

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 1, 2010 10:59 AM EST up reply actions
I thought
Redman had issues with conditioning, which played a big par in his exclusion.
Anyway, for our #2 back I would like a smaller speedy type to contrast Mendy a little better. That is another reason I don’t see Redman getting a spot. We will see though.

We re-signed him
and Deebo was cut four times. I’m not saying he’s going to be the Deebo of RBs, but just because he has been cut, does not mean he can’t contribute in the future.
You said it yourself:
I’d say our depth at LB is nearly as bad as depth at S.
I would rather spend that RB draft pick, on getting a special teams playing linebacker, into our development pipeline (I’m looking at you Bruce Davis). I think LB depth is a bigger issue for us than RB depth.

Many Many options
that would come a lot cheaper than sproles, this is a pretty deep draft as far as solid RB goes, not a ton of super stars but a lot of talent that can contribute. LeGarrette Blount is my wish list for RB this year. Power and decent speed. One incident, I can look past that. I don’t know what the other player said to him but judging by the smirk it wasn’t good game.
I agree
If Blount could focus some of that intensity and passion into his run game, he could be the next Chris Johnson. Not saying he will be, just saying he could.
"OOH! A piece of candy. OOH! A piece of candy."

He absolutely cannot be the next Chris Johnson.
His speed is average at best. Spiller is most likely to become a mirror image of Johnson.

he’s gonna be like that fat-ass that backs up Chris Johnson. Even Ducks fans out here in Oregon never thought he was all that special, and that was before the cheap shot.

FWP is gone - Bring in LT
I would bring in LT if the price is right. He could spell Mendenhall and give some veteran leadership to the RB. He could mentor Mendenhall. Teach him how to watch film and prepare for games.
Parker is not a good mentor. He still thinks he can be a #1 back..LT wants to win a SB. It would be a win-win.
by Steeler Nation VA on Mar 2, 2010 12:19 PM EST reply actions
Quite aside from the fact that LT would probably want
twice what they’re paying FWP? Why wouldn’t the Steelers want to pick up a more expensive version of Willie?
Over 30? Check.
Oft injured? Check.
Didn’t get alot of carries? Check.
Had crap for YPC? Check.
Perfect for a SB run…
Besides, all this discussion of LT coming to Pittsburgh is moot anyway. Emperor Al-patine is going to snap him up.
"OOH! A piece of candy. OOH! A piece of candy."
-James Woods
If LT wants another payday, he is not going to get it from the Steelers. He will be a backup period. 3-8 carries a game. Keep him healthy. He brings leadership, something that FWP was lacking. Since the Bus retired, the backs have not had any vet leadership.
Willie was making $4-5. If LT will take that for a shot at a SB, fine, if he wants starters $ for a role player/mentor, I say, “good luck and don’t let the door hit you in the but”.
by Steeler Nation VA on Mar 2, 2010 12:55 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not ...
going to give you any reasons why he may or may not become a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, I’m simply going to answer the subject’s question … I would love Darren Sproles to be on this team. I’ve watched him play in high school, college and the NFL. He has been a consistently excellent player, misused by the Chargers I think, but he has always been there when needed.
