Updated Mock Draft from a Pro - Steelers Select MLB Rolando McClain
I am not going to make my own Mock Draft, I don't know College Football Players that good to do this.
Here's a very good Mock Draft from a pro, though. It is updated and he has changed his Steeler picks after Casey Hampton was resigned and with some other new Free Agents signed
http://walterfootball.com/draft2010.php
Steelers 1st Round Pick - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama
Surprised to see Rolando McClain this low? Some mocks have McClain as high as No. 5, which I think is crazy. No inside linebacker has gone higher than No. 9 (Brian Urlacher) in the past 15 years. And there's a reason for that, as well as the fact that other renowned inside linebackers like Rey Maualuga and James Laurinaitis have fallen - the position is not that important.
However, McClain is a great value at No. 18, and I can't see the Steelers passing up on him if he's available. James Farrior has been a very good player for a number of years, but he recently turned 35. The Steelers will have to find a successor soon.
Other 2010 Steelers 1st Round Draft Possibilities:
1. Kyle Wilson, CB - Corner is a huge need for the Steelers.
2. Mike Iupati, G - Right guard has to be upgraded.
---
Steelers 2nd Round Pick - Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma
As I wrote earlier, the Steelers have to upgrade a secondary that couldn't stop Bruce Gradkowski in a must-win December game.
---
Steelers 3rd Round Pick - John Jerry, G, Ole Miss
Right guard is a big position of need for the Steelers. John Jerry fits the team's blocking scheme.
---
Steelers 4th Round Pick - Eric Norwood, DE/OLB, South Carolina
The Steelers have two great pass-rushing linebackers, but they don't exactly have the best depth at the position. Also, don't forget that James Harrison turns 32 in May.

I agree with lightningrod...
We should pick up a corner this year, it all depends on when though. I don’t see a pressing need for a corner, but if the right one is available at the right time, then I can’t see a reason to not take one.

Yeah, my bad DaTruth...
I saw every game last year, but in keeping with the thought process of the organization, I believe that the two young guys will get their fair shot before moving to a rookie. We all know the track record with rookies in our D. Poor elaboration on my part.

I like the linebacker choice
With so many teams switching to the 3/4, it’s a good idea to pick up a college outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid in the middle rounds and develop him for the future. I didn’t come up with this idea on my own – it’s what the Steelers usually do (with a lot of success)!

what?
we signed allen, troy is healthy and got clark back why would u not take a CB over safety?????
How old
is clark and polamalu, The steelers set themselves up to draft best player available, which could be CB but more likely will be Safety with Morgan Burnett and Rashad Jones. It all depends on how they are rated, I just find it hard we would draft another CB after taking two last year, that would mean that they gave up on burnett or lewis

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 10, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions
Agree, but I'm also considering corner
because Lewis or Burnett (most likely Lewis) seem to have the ability to slide to safety. With that in mind, I would take the most athletically gifted/polished DB. I think some of the CBs in this draft have better skill sets in the secondary than the safeties. This year’s safeties, beyond Thomas and Berry, all seem to have limited range.
Depends again
on how the corners are rated, anyone we pick up in this draft likely will not help this year.

I don't disagree.
You know how much this team LOVES versatility, and one player that can play 2 or 3 positions makes his value skyrocket.
How much longer do you want to wait to get Troy’s “replacement”? When the next injury ends his career? Safeties need at LEAST a year to get acclimated to our complex system…

I tend to agree with you now
It would seem that the Steelers have put themselves in position to draft a CB much earlier if they choose to do so. Still don’t think its the first round though my Celtic loving fan. If the Steelers make a move to trade up, I think it will be for McClain. If they stay put and Dan Williams is still there, they draft him. If they stay put and Williams is gone, too, they go with Iupati. I could easily see a CB in the 2nd and personally feel that is the earliest I’d draft any CB availalbe to us in this draft. Meaning, there is not much in the way of 1st round CB talent in the draft, IMWO.
I have spoken.

Not sure I'd call it giving up though
seems a bit drastic to me to call it giving up. Competition? Townsend gone (most likely anyway), Gay, not very good #2. Ike, not getting any younger. The two guys from last year would still be very much in the mix.
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games
by chewiesteeler on Mar 10, 2010 12:12 PM EST up reply actions
You don't draft a second rounder
for competition, you draft him hoping that he can start. So if we do draft CB in round 2 that means you don’t think lewis or burnett can be anymore than a #3 CB or that you don’t think gay is a #3 corner, we know gay can play #3 corner decent. We just need to fill the void at #2. There is no way we can expect any of the talent in the second round to be able to start first year. So thats why I think it is pointless to go after a corner. I may be wrong but are you really trying to get a starting corner in the second round for this year? Wouldn’t Burnett and Lewis likely be better options for the #2 job since they already know the defense? I can see them drafting a CB in the 4-7 rounds, thats competition.
Steelers football is 60 mins.
by tannofsteel84 on Mar 10, 2010 12:17 PM EST up reply actions
So either
you will end up having to cut lewis, burnett, or gay one of them and I think we are better served at pickup a Safety because we have no idea what Will Allen will be able to do in our system and we know Ryan Clark only has a couple of years and no one can replace troy.

I like your logic on McClain falling
Would be a great pickup at #18. But I would still take one of the 4 top OTs (bulaga, okung, trent williams, or a Davis) or Dan Williams over them if they fell. You never get a chance to get a top OT or NT, so you got to get them when they fall to your lap.
I’d take McClain over Iupati or a CB though (except Haden).

We need to strengthen the interior line a bit and Iupati is the guy to do this. If McClain is there then take him but the Oline needs a new face. Second round take a S or CB. Nate Allen will be there. Focus on Defense and O line for this draft
think Iupati could start right away?

highly possible
Also, do you just give the spot to Trai Essex? Do you create some sort of real competition at the spot?
Our RG position is up in the air
Iupati could step in right away. He would help the running game and as the season progresses pass protection will get better. And when was the last time our round 1 draft pick started? Answer 2001 Casey Hampton midway through the season
ummm...
Ben and Miller both ended up starting.
I disagree
We have enough talent that our first rounder doesn’t have to be an impact player right away. Ziggy did not figure too much into the mix last year, at least not until the end.
Right
Iupati does not have to step in right away. But i guarantee he will end up starting by the end of the season. check out some of his tape on youtube. He is a BEAST
that depends
If Iupati comes into camp and shows he can start then start him. Otherewise develope him through the season and then give him a chance. He can play center as well and maybe later in his career he transitions there
And then in 3rd round
If Cam Thomas from UNC is there we take him. He could take over for Casey “Big Snack” Hampton. This Draft is deep. So maybe LB in Second Round and with the fourth round there will still be S or CB. Think, no one is talking about Myron Rolle.
Wrong
everyone is talking about Rolle.
Do you want what happen last year too happen again? Safety will be pick in one of the first 3 rounds.

He makes a good point
Some will doubt that Rolando McClain could make it to No. 15, but inside linebackers have fallen before (Rey Maualuga, James Laurinaitis). If McClain is here, the Giants will be very intrigued. However, McClain projects poorly into the 4-3, and GM Jerry Reese places a huge emphasis on positional value. McClain provides none as an inside linebacker.
McClain is essentially a 3-4 guy, its what he played in college. Its kinda iffy the giants taking him in the 1st and teaching a brand new system. Its possible that they do not take him.

Iupati, R. McClain, D. Williams, K. Wilson are all sitting there at no. 18
Who should the Steelers take and why?
I like a guy who tries to keep a discussion going...
I’d take Rolando, but only slightly over Dan Williams. Iupati, as awesome as it would be to have another mauler on the line, is in my opinion a pipe dream. The franchise has been pretty clear on the “continuity on the offensive line” thing. The need for Dan Williams has tempered a bit since the re-signing of Hampton, although I still would take him if given the shot.
I’ve wanted another ILB for the last year. I pushed for Maualuga last year. We will need another athletic body on the inside soon enough, and McClain could be that guy. (But to be perfectly honest, my darkhorse for the pick is Sean Weatherspoon. He provides the flexibility of an inside or outside LB, and has the coverage ability we need from our ILB’s.)
You’re a Kyle Wilson guy though, right? I haven’t seen a lot of him, honestly. But I remember when Orlando Scandrick came out, they mentioned Wilson might be a better corner. But at 18?

Iupati at #18
Although our defense is aging it is our Offensive Line that needs the most help. Especially the interior line, which does not have anyone drafted before the 6th round. All of our guards are undrafted free agents, other than Trai Essex 3rd Round. Im not saying that makes them bad but some talent on the interior line would be far more beneficial to our team than an ILB or DL.
The draft is very deep when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. We can pick up a very good LB in the second round and DL in the coming rounds. Our O-line has been our achilles heal for a while. Being able to run the ball and control the tempo of the game helps our defense too.
As mentioned before we just signed Big Snack and a replacement for him could be picked in Cam Thomas in later rounds.
Mike Iupati at #18!!!
I want Holyfield! You've seen what these guns can do in the Middle East. Now I'm gunna show you what they can do in the ring..
Larry Foote
Is coming to Pittsburgh monday, which means he will probably sign with us. He is 29 which is a big difference compared with farrior who is 35! If we get him signed I think we stay away from LB in the first couple rounds. Unless Haden is there at 18 I think we take Iupati, just went DL last year in the first not going to do it again this year.
