I am not an atheist. :) I just don’t understand why some religious people act and talk like they are better than others, its like they don’t even read their own bible. I don't like the "new" free agent strategy

I just think it appears as if the steelers are more interested in signing overpriced veterans than drafting well. I hope it all works out but these older veterans rarely do.

I am also a bit worried

Don’t get me wrong. I love Foote and Randle-El – but I wonder about the wisdom of paying starter wages for back-up players. I suppose that in the short-term Sans salary cap, we can afford to do this. But this seems to be a departure from our previous approach of picking up low-profile guys and have them grow into a system.

Having said that Foote meets a real need. We were somewhat thin at linebacker without him. You have to assume that Farrior is reaching the end of his tenure as a starter – if not this year than probably next year. I do like Fox – and thought he played very well when pressed into service last year, but apart from him everyone else failed to impress.

I do wonder though about the efficacy of paying a guy 10 million over 3 years as a back-up.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 15, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Starter money?

The guaranteed money isn’t that much, and this is, after all, an uncapped year. I’m thinking they’ll have a bit more space to maneuver even if they stay close to the projected cap. We needed help and competition, we got it. Now corner and interior lineman have to be a priority. We’ll just have to see, but I’d like me a Haden and a Pouncey with that burger!

Consider it unleashed!

by Steelfrog on Mar 15, 2010 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a salary expert

but the deal would put his salary around 3.5 a year. That seems to me to be up there in terms of what many of our starters get.

Someone who get’s salaries better can maybe help out. The other thing that’s interesting is that we are likely paying him at least as much and likely more than Arizona (which he seemed to prefer) was willing to offer.

Add to that the 7 million over three years we are paying Randle-El to be our 4th receiver and I wonder if new management isn’t over-paying for depth.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 15, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you figure?

9.3/3 = 3.1. Considering the deal is probably back loaded to some extent, we’re probably looking at something like this :

600k+ 2.0m
600k+ 2.5m
600k+ 3.0m

A bit pricey, but nothing dramatic. With 7 figure salaries to Kirschke, Parker, Townsend and Carter off the books, I think they can afford it…

Consider it unleashed!

by Steelfrog on Mar 15, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Did Deshea or Travis land any where? Haven’t heard much about them.

With the 18th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Florida QB Tim Tebow. (not a RB!)

by Johnny_S on Mar 15, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I was counting the signing bonus

of 1.3 Million. 9.3 +1.3=10.6 or 3.5 a year. Like I said, I don’t think know how the experts count salary, but that is what the papers reported.

Anyway you want quality depth for sure, and I loved Foote’s play over the years, but it made me blink that we picked him up when the Cards chose to pass. Maybe we lucked out, or maybe we spent more on a back-up a line-backer than we usually do.

We definitely have some depth/age issues at other positions facing us (Safety, Corner, D-Line) that will need to be addressed.

The other negative I see is that by taking an Foote we are essentially giving up on the development of younger cheaper back-ups who might one day blossom into starters. These young guys are often hungry and energetic – not to mention that the only place they have for proving themselves is on ST.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 15, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Now having said all of that

I think we could see Farrior retire soon at which point Timmons would take his place as the buck and Foote can slide back into a starter role at the mack. Actually considering Farrior’s play – especially in the fourth quarter last year, I think we would be better on defense this year with Foote and Timmons as the two starters than with Farrior and Timmons in their current roles. Moving to the buck could make really allow Timmons to become a danger in the middle and I still like Farrior (spelled by Fox in passing downs) at the mack.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 15, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Now I like your thinking

My thoughts exactly on the subject of position changes. The only question mark there is whether or not Timmons is smart enough to play the Buck…

I believe the bonus amount is always counted in the total contract amount. Therefore you can count it in there like I did earlier. Makes for a more sensible contract.

Consider it unleashed!

by Steelfrog on Mar 15, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

With these 3 year deals, the signing bonus and the amount paid in the uncapped year is most important

These players can get cut next year and the signing bonus would be the only thing counting against the cap. I like this strategy of being agressive and bringing back people who made plays before for this franchise.

In case anyone has forgotten, this was a 9-7 football team this past year that was arugably the softest in the AFC North. That iiissshhhhttt is unacceptable. Time to get back to being a physical team on both sides of the ball again.

Apart from his ability to jam at the line, I don’t think anyone in the right mind is going to go over the middle against him. Darnelle Revis be dammed. I think we may have just revolutionized the corner position.

FA policy

One of the major problems last year, thru each facet of the game, was the the lack of depth. This really showed up in the defence (Ty Carter and Deshea), but aso in the offence, toward the end of the season when the WR’s were depleted by injury to Hines and the disappearance of Sweed. This years FA signings are IMO aimed at filliong those hole……linebacker, safety, WR. Other signings bring in competion to positions that didn’t really stand out last year…punter, (kicker?).
Many comentators talk about this being a deep alround draft…..agin IMO the Steelers could use their larger number of picks as trade-bait to get the BPA in the higher rounds…..CB, Iupati, RB and maybe a quality safety.
And lets not forget that sonn we’ll need to a NT to be ready when the snack goes…
In short Foote is a great move in line with a set FA policy in this un capped year .

WTF? c'mon celtsfan...FWP doesn't suck.

You know better than that. He’s been banged up the last couple of years, and is no longer a starter on the Steelers, but I would take him over “LT” or westbrook, etc…he’s gonna be 30 this fall, but he has been a damned good back. I hope he comes back as a backup (for cheap) and has some good carries for us. PLease don’t hate on Willie. I just don’t get it. He ran good in Miami in the season finale too.

U would take Parker over Westbrook that makes no sense mendenhall is our main back so we need. A 3rd down back that means recieving out of the backfield. Picking up blitzes 2 things Parker sucks at wow I prefer mew Moore over parker

Steelers Draft Failures, Not Philosophy Shift, Fuel New Free Agent Aggressiveness

Lot’s of well informed debate here. These are my two cents:

The Steelers absoutely lacked depth last year. All of the FA moves, save for Clark’s return, are aimed at bolstering depth.

But there has been no shift in the Steelers philsophy toward free agency. In some ways such a shift would be more comforting.

Because as it stands, the Steelers newly found aggressiveness in free agency is a product of a string of early round draft failures. Click here for a full explaination.

This is concerning me

Hampton was a must but still a ton of money for a 2 down linneman. Clark…..well…..safe re signing although he did look terrible last yr. Would rather have seen that money go to a more youthful playmaker like Bisby. Allen……ok. a non- event but anything that gets me not watching Tyrone next yr is a good thing. Randle El….uh ok I guess. Did we need a slot receiver after signing Battle? Seems redundant. Now Foote? Again, safe, solid signing for depth. Each one made sense individually but on the whole it feels……..well stale. I guess we will address our void of speed and youth in the draft but I’m not confident when you think of Sweed, Urbik, Hall, etc. I know we will be money in the first round as we always are but the addressing of youth and speed is needed in rounds 2 through 6. Call me a skeptic on the off season thus far.

by MEP12 on Mar 15, 2010 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

battle is probably pretty much camp competition

right? Sweed definitely on the bubble. He needs to get with the program or he is indeed a bust. Urbik pretty much the same i guess. Tyrone Carter shoulda been gone a couple of years ago IMO. I like the dude a lot, but it hurt to watch him last year for sure. Allen for depth. ARE and Foote will be great back ups, or who knows, maybe Foote takes over for Farrior? It’s gonna be interesting to see for sure…damn, ain’t it football season yet!

You mean Hills, not Urbik.

Urbik is still pretty new, they’ll likely keep him around and see how much he improves this year. This is Hills’s year to prove he can be a reliable backup or he won’t make it out of camp.

Nice

Now Timmons can play OLB sometimes and start blitzing like crazy. Given his speed I definitely want to see that.

which of our

two current OLBs would you sit?

by qwikdoc on Mar 15, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

that we are doing OK at OLB.
What would be interesting is to see Timmons take over the Buck and have Foote take over the Mack – and keep Farrior on as the reserve. Is it just me or did Farrior often look slow and tired during our fourth quarter collapses last year?

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 15, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You are not alone

That missed tackle in the Cinci game on that 3rd and long is still fresh in my memory. And the missed tackle on Rice late in the Ravens game.

Yeah

You just got the sense that the middle of the field got really soft in those games. Not saying it’s all Potsie’s fault by any stretch, but I think he shared responsibility for it.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 15, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

soft

yes the short middle was vulnerable – I too am a fan of Farrior but if he’s lost a step this game is not forgiving…

that said I think he could still be a nice back-up guy.

I missed the second Cinci game because I was out of the country, so I did not know. Never caught a replay of it because I did not want to, haha.

he whiffed on Cribbs a few times too

Don’t want to pile since he has been so damn steady but god he was bad last yr.

He did put

on extra muscle in the off season because he said he lost too much weight in 2008. I wonder if he really has lost it (his speed) or if it was the extra weight. I love the guy as a player, but it might be his time to go.

Timmons won't start at OLB

He would come in occasionally when either Woodley or Harrison is on the sidelines. But again, this depends on how the ILB duties are split.

A strong rotation of rushing OLBers

like Woodley, Harrison, and Timmons would drive any O-coordinator buckwild!

Being able to maintain the rush w.o wearing out these OLBs is an excellent option IMHO

by tobiathan on Mar 15, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder

how playing time will break down this year if everyone stays healthy. Again, it’s hard for me to imagine that we are paying Foote 3.5million a year just for depth. It’s also hard for me to imagine any arrangement that keeps Timmons off the field at this stage of his career.

Bouchette has pointed out before that Timmons is better suited either at OLB or Buck. No way he moves to OLB barring injury since he is competing against two pro-bowlers – so what’s left?

I'd love BMac back

Even after that awful year in Arizona.

BMAC would be a fine signing, but he has one more year left on his contract with the cards

Chad Scott must be a joke. He was the absolute worst early pick we’ve made since Tim Worley, that is including Coclough, Jackson, and Sweed.

Okay he started for a buncha years, but I was glad to see him go. He couldn’t catch a cold!

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

this draft is gonna be all defense

With a possible low rd running back. Our offense is young, I can see 90 percent of our draft being defense. Corner, safety, nt, de.

I think we can eliminate ILB

From first round consideration. We are now 6-deep at ILB, with Farrior, Timmons, Foote, Fox, that CFL guy and one more player who’s name escapes me.

BTSC Obituaries

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

Peezy, Faneca, Hope, Nate W.,
and isn’t Plex getting out of Jail soon?

but Nate is a douche, Peezy is well Peezy, isn’t Plex turning 33 this year? Besides, Plex won’t be able to run as fast after those guys get done with him…
