State of the Steelers

With all the off season drama, increased free agent activity, and draft mysteries, the State of the Steelers may have some heads spinning. Listening to SCR broadcast this morning with Jim Wexell really had me thinking. Are the Steelers going to run the ball more next year? Is our franchise getting away from its tried and proven system of building through the draft, and letting aging vets walk? Is this whole off season a mistake waiting to happen?

Star-divide

We started off the action, this offseason, with Ben's new problem. One that hasn't escaped many ears. One that the media is already closing it's doors on. Unless Ben raped that girl he isn't going anywhere. He isn't going to get another mulligan though. For Ben, guilty or innocent, this will be his last chance. So now that we have established that Ben is starting, what position do we draft at 18?

Wexell pointed out that with Foote coming back and last years draft being heavy in the secondary we might not be drafting McClain or Hayden. That we might be looking at our thinnest corp on the defense, the outside LBs. You wouldn't think off the bat that we need help in those areas but consistent play by both Woodley and Harrison have shadowed the need for depth on the outside. Patrick Bailey a ST ace, and Andre Fraizer are strapping on their helmets if either 56 or 92 goes down. How does that make you feel? With a secondary that is already having problems do you think we can afford to ease pressure on opposing QBs? Yeah me either.  The ILB is the "QB" on the D. It takes a lot of intelligence to manage LeBeau's 3-4. As great of a pass rusher that Timmons is, I and many others don't think he has the capacity to be that guy. In comes Foote to help a slowing Farrior. Timmons can now be moved outside and create depth with no drop off, or play in 3rd down packages.

Last year's secondary should be looking better with Lewis and Burnett making their second year debut. One needs to blossom into the corner we drafted them for. FA signings that included Battle will help on ST no doubt, but I'm not so sure about an impact next year in our secondary. Carter might be gone, and we all know Gay isn't cutting it in his current position. The fact is that we drafted for our biggest need last year.  Rookies in the Steeler system aren't always asked to contribute the first year. This year we need to see what these 2nd year boys have got.

Lastly, to uphold Mr. Rooney's request that we get back to the Steeler way and run the football more, we need to take a good look at our line and RB situation. Mike Iupati is a favorite to go in the 1st rd if he drops to 18. All indications point to him being road grader and a great guard. His pass protection raises some eyebrows though. He can't move around as fast as some of the other prospects in regards to getting his man on pass plays.

Our RB squad is another piece in the puzzle of where the Steelers will be going in April. Mendy is getting it done and showing that he's our guy. Tough and physical, he's starting to get it no doubt. Willie Parker might still be getting shipped off and Moore is a discount that we need. With all the talk of Frank the Tank doing everything he can in the playbook to get on the field next year we seem to have the RB situation set, or do we? If we are going to run more will we have the big man that can punch it in a yard or two? Do we need a bruiser to achieve that? Can Redman come out of the Practice Squad Hall of Fame and get it done?

There's a lot of questions to be asked. And a lot of people to ask them to but most of mine are pointed towards the man I really don't care for too much. Here he is ladies and gentleman, the one, the furher:

Arians_medium

Mr. Bruce Arians.

Bruce my questions and, the state of this franchise all seem to point to you. Will you try to run the ball more next year? Which could lead us to drafting Iupati. Or, do you plan on keeping your pass heavy attack, which may lead us to drafting a pass protecting lineman? Tell me what you are planning Bruce!

Whatever the case may be I hope that we get our man in the first round. I really want a safety but I don't see it happening. Don't be too surprised if we draft a RB also. I'm not an insider by any means. I just want to get some conversation going and for the season to start already. Here we go Steelers!

A 1st round RB? Giggidy...

I don’t see the problem of having a ‘run first’ offense. Keep a lot of pressure off Ben, and put more pressure on the opposing D.

Burnett and Lewis really need to step up and show why the Steelers drafted them.

For comedic effect, here is BA’s audition picture for Dancing With the Stars:

Willie gets signed by the steelers. I stay not too far from Willie’s sister house. I’ll let her know there is a steeler fan out there that needs her brother. :)

I am fully prepared to eat a towel for BJ Speller CJ Spiller. However, I think it makes more sense to grab Best in the 2nd.

I don't feel secure with either Patrick Baliey or Andre Fraizer as our back up OLB

so lets go get some one either in FA(no not peezy) or in the later rounds of the draft because I don’t want the perfect storm of suck to return this season

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

Why not Peezy?

I mean I know he wants to be a starter and he won’t find that here but that’d be a great backup.
Heres the OLB’s that are still FA’s:

I don't believe anyone said anything about running the ball more ..

..it was running the ball better, that’s the key. The Steelers are who they are now, we have:
a 1st round QB,
a 1st round RB (who’s good catching the ball),
a 1st round WR,
a 1st round TE

.. we are going to throw the ball, period.

But when we do run we need to be able to do it better and be able to impose ourselves on other teams in crunch moments.

I’m fine with throwing the ball on 3rd and 2 because you think you can get it or its your best play, I’m NOT fine with throwing the ball on 3rd and 2 because you don’t believe you can run for it … we need to dictate to other defences, not them dictating to us ..

What's missing is

a 1st round OL to block for said passing play.

If you buy a foreign made product you give money to a person who will not be buying an American made product that you get paid to make. Think about it next time you're at the store.

thats why we are drafting Tim Tebow

not only will he throw the pass but he block on the play as well

I agree with Rash92

and for our running game to make big plays we need Iupati. Controlling the ball will take pressure off our defense as well

I don't think we draft a OLB in the 1st

Because we will be calling him a bust if he doesn’t see the field by his 3rd season. It’s getting harder too predict where we are going in the draft.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

We need youth along the D line. Hood helps, Harris looks like he might develop, but Snack is getting old, Smith has had two of the last three years with a season ending injury (that’s a red flag right there), and Kiesel is getting up there too, although he doesn’t have alot of miles thanks to not cracking the starting line up for several years. I hope we trade back, grab an extra mid round pick, and take a guy like Wootton with our first pick. Another option is to package a few picks and try to trade up into the top ten for a real blue chip guy, like Hayden, or Berry.

I hope you die in a fire, that was set accidentally, by someone you love.

Trading Down

…is a bad idea. Look at the roster. It is pretty full now. Take the best available in the draft at 18 for CB, OL, or D Line.

Refreshing football poast

Somehow I skipped over this one. I see some people still managed to get some snarky comments in (looking at you .. .. ..)

Its going to be interesting to see how they use Foote. Clearly with the contract he signed he should not be rotting on the bench. I do not think he is the proper help for Farrior though. I believe that duty will end up falling to Timmons who is better in Pass Pro. We do need some OLB depth but not in the form of a #1 at this point. Bring in some competition in rd #3 or #4 to challenge Bailey.

Thanks for the post; solid and level headed.

Agree about the corners, year 2 is going to be big for them. Burnet would appear to have the leg up because he saw time, but regardless of that, both of these guys need to see playing time that is impactful.

Foote lessons the need for an at once replacement for Farrior, so I would guess the FO may not have seen a no-brainer in the draft this year. I still think that while Big Snack was resigned, they grab his replacement this draft and work him into the mix slowly. Quality NT’s are harder to find than LB’s, IMO.

+1 on the "solid and level headed" comment

Here is what I see:
Defense: Things aren’t as bad in the secondary as many would like to believe. With Troy and Ryan back, Wil Allen added and Mundy with a year’s experience (in real terms last year was his rookie season). Lewis and Burnett were rookies in what, by all accounts is a complex system (Troy didn’t start his rookie year). We’ll get a better picture of what they are capable of this season. We might pick up someone like a Haden in a BPA situation. Otherwise, we go with what we got and Deshea and Tyrone are still in the bullpen so to speak. I bring back Deshea for leadership purposes. That will become important in a SB run and if this business with Ben lingers into the season.

Bringing back Foote gives us the possibility to have exactly the same starting lineup in that position as we had for SBXLIII. A bit thinner than we would like, but still potent through six players (Timmons, Woodley, Harrison, Farrior, Foote and Fox) I don’t buy into Farrior’s gone to the dogs line. With his buddy Foote back, this may well be one of his best years.

The best thing about the injuries on the DL is that it moved Ziggy Hood’s prep timetable up about a year or so. It would be nice to be able to obtain a high quality sidekick to Ziggy to develop as a second line and allow Travis and Nick to saunder off into the sunset.

On offense ARE’s greatest contribution will be leadership in support of Hines, and of course, Ben. He also helps reduce the disappointment and drama if Sweed goes bust for good. If FWP doesn’t come back then getting a high quality backup/co-star for Mendenhall becomes more vital than many want to believe. Name an effective running attack in the League today that doesn’t have a high quality #2. Even Peterson had Chester Taylor to spell him.

I don’t think that they have on some sort of wholesale level abandoned their values. I do think that the playing field has changed to the extent that these moves represent our best chance of not hitting bottom and finding ourselves falling out of competition.
