Kyle Wilson Is Going To Wear Black and Gold

As I look at the winter snow mold that has ravaged my lawn, I decided to look a little closer at this guy who is seemingly flying under the radar at this point. Kyle Wilson seems to have all of the tools necessary to be a solid starting cornerback in the NFL for many years to come. Due to a slight hamstring injury, he did not participate in the run drills at the combine. He is scheduled to workout for pro scouts at Boise State on March 26th. Bet the house that the Steelers will be seated in the front row with two pens in their pocket protector. He has been clocked as low as 4.32 and as high as 4.51. These times are very solid as compared to the overall consensus no. 1 cornerback, Joe Haden. The Steelers like corners to be physical and support the run. Wilson looks rock solid at 5'10" 194 and put up 225 25 times!!!! Let me repeat that again.... 225  25 TIMES  He beat every single corner at the combine by at least 5 reps and overall finished 2nd when the safeties were included in the mix. He is extremely fluid at the hips,so much so that some scouts talked about his hips so much that another joked that they should get a room. He makes transitions in coverage seem effortless because of this hip fluidity. He is considered by many scouts to be the best cover corner in the draft. Mike Mayock of ESPN raved about this guy after the first day of senior bowl practices and claimed that he stood out above all the rest. Our defense is complicated and he is known to be very intelligent and has a genuine love of the game of football. After he intercepts a pass, he return ability is outstanding. His hair flowing out of his helmet and his moves remind me of .......Yea Troy   Last but not least he is ultra competitive. His biggest weakness is level of competition and his aggressiveness sometimes gets him burned. They said the same thing about Rod Woodson. I know, I know, visions of Ricardo Coclough may be dancing through your head. Listen, let's quit kidding ourselves about Lewis and Burnett. Free agency has addressed immediate needs and or depth at NT, ILB. and WR. There is a glaring hole ( Sorry Willy Gay) at cornerback. With the 18th pick of the 2010 NFL draft the Steelers select.......Kyle Wilson cb/Boise State

I could see it

And I’m all for it as long as the three game suspension Wilson served in 2007, isn’t a representation of his character.

BTSC Obituaries

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

I think he is thumbs up on the character issue since then

Another good story about him that I found… I guess the wr’s coach for Indy coached the wr’s at the senior bowl. He told Wilson at the beginning of the week that they were going to torch him.Wilson took it as a challenge and performed so well through the week that the coach came up to him afterward and told him"Man you have been a pain in my ass all week." I worry that if burns a great 40 time on the 26th that he may move up the board…..

by Dr Del on Mar 15, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If he runs a great 40

He’ll be gone by the time we are up. He had a good combine and a good senior bowl. That has all the makings of a top 10 or top 15 pick. If he runs in the high 4.4s at his Pro Day he might be the first corner off the board.

Haden is slipping too. If he doesn’t run good at UF’s Pro Day I think he’ll be there at 18. But be wary of those Gators though.

by StoneColdSteel on Mar 16, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Haden

Haden was the best corner I watched play all season in cfb. There wasn’t even a close second. Sometimes I think all this combine stuff gets blown out of porportion. He took the unconventional route of preparing for the combine by working out wih his dad and not one of these trainers that prepare for the combine only. Granted his dad was a former pro bodybuilder. Also rumor on the street was that Joe Haden had a sprained cack while doing his combine work out. Bottom line is I watched this kid play every week in the SEC and he was the best corner by far in cfb this season.

lol..i meant back

LMAO

A sprained cack would definately slow you down one way or another

by Dr Del on Mar 16, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Haden is good

But like I said those Gators have a high bust rate. And I don’t think he’s big enough to be a #1 corner in our defense.

Typically our corners are heavily involved in run support, which means they have to be a little bigger than usual to hold up. That’s why I like Devin McCourty and this Chris Cook is starting to grow on me too.

I don’t think we draft either Wilson or Haden. I also am still curious as to why we tendered Colon instead of extending him. It could have something to do with Kugler wanting to go in a different direction with our o-line.

Emmitt Smith? Percy Harvin? Kevin Carter? Jevon Kearse?Jabar Gaffney? Max Starks? I don’t think that is too shabby a track record :)

Sure.

Jarvis Moss, Chad Jackson, Reggie Nelson, Rex Grossman? All pick with in the first 2 rounds. all Busts Here is my list

I don't believe Grossman is a bust

just a victim of scheme. That and being on a horrible team for most of his career (I say most because he just got traded, just can’t remember to what team).

Yup

I am 90 percent on board with ya. Can’t let a talent like that get away. NFL mocks have him going to us also. I like it. After watchin him play his style is comparable to Troys. Plus the hair and I’m stoked.

Brian: Face it Peter, you get competitive about everything.
Peter: I am so not competitive. In fact, I am the least non-competitive. So I win.

by SoCalSteelerFan on Mar 16, 2010 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

Love him. He's NFL-ready

I really think he could start for us, if not on Day 1, then certainly at some point in his first year. He would really upgrade the position. He has great ball-skills and when you watch him tackle you can see he’s Steeler-tough. Plus, I think we could trade down a few picks in round 1 and get him in the 21-24 range. I haven’t seen many mocks that have him going higher than that. We might be able to pick up a late 3rd or early 4th if we can swing that. I still want Iupati, but Wilson is a close 2nd on my wish list.

I'm a huge fan of Kyle Wilson...

but if he runs a sub 4.4 40 at his pro day he’ll be taken ahead of Joe Haden. He’ll get the kind of hype and attention Dominic Rodgers-Cromartie got right before the 2008 draft.

by big_jay71 on Mar 16, 2010 7:42 AM EDT reply actions

You forgot to mention his awesome RV

that he had at the Senior Bowl. Had a big pic of him on the side.

Sounds like a really good player to have, but I haven’t seen a mock showing him going as high as #18. I’d rather grab a stud lineman in the 1st.

On another note, saw on Scout.com that the Steelers have scheduled a visit with Earl Thomas in early April.

225 25X is pretty damn stout eh?

this here’s a strong dude for real. People are saying we are taking a corner, but I am thinking that they are gonna grab a DL in the first round…totally just a guess of course! i just hope we get a few contributors who will stick and be able to help out. I trust the FO.

by SteelersFnRule on Mar 16, 2010 9:57 AM EDT reply actions

Kyle Wilson’s scouting report reads that he is great at bump and run and man coverage, but tends to lose track of action in zone coverage.

I think he’s a great corner, just that he doesn’t fit our system at all.

Dick LeBeau does not jam receivers, the corners have a good deal of run responsibility, and they play off to give time to read the play. Also Corners are heavily responsible for deep zone coverage, and that is likely Wilson’s #1 weakness.

I don’t think we’ll take a guy and try to change him that much.

Here is a good scouting report from the draft site here at SBN.

I would like Devin McCourty much more, as his strengths are pretty much exactly lined up for our system, and he’s a ST terror.

Good point

our corners are rarely in bump and run position they are 5 yards off their man and sometimes 8 yards. Which always irked me a little bit but I understand its the scheme.

I thought our CBs were responsible for short zone coverage with the safeties over the top? And CBs in a 4-3 or Tampa-2 were responsible for deep zones?

The steelers will draft

bpa and will trade up if they have to. They have plenty of depth everywhere now. I really have gotten to the point where I don’t care who they pick up as long as they contribute lol. Kyle Wilson, Joe Haden, Buluga, lupati, McClain. Who ever is the best player out of those guys they will take. We all have our personal opinions about what this team needs, who is the best value, who will be available, and who on the roster will or will not get better. I honestly think Kennen Lewis will be a good #2 guy this year, he’s big, strong and fast.

+1

I do have a point of contention:

Kennen Lewis will be a good #2 guy this year, he’s big, strong and fast

That’s all well and good, however, Issac “Ike” Taylor will be 30 this may. To this point, there is NO #1 corner on the roster behind Ike.

Also, the Steelers have yet to bring in ANY free agent CB’s other than Pittman, who wasn’t a #1 corner anywhere he played before here. This is a GLARING need that must be addressed before the start of next season.

Very true

we need to look for Ike’s replacement, its a crap shoot to tell when ike is really going down, last year wasn’t that bad, not as good as 2008 but not horrendous, I think he can be #1 for at least 2 more years.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

Ike is also in the last year of his contract.

I would love to draft Iupati, but there are questions about his pass protection (showed in senior bowl) and he had a low wonderlic score at the combine. It might not mean much but we already have a dumb o-linemen who is a lot like Iupati (Kemo). If he was to get drafted at 18 he has to be a stud, without any questions surrounding him (like Hutchinson who was drafted at #17). With all this info i think we should draft a #1CB this year and let Ike go.

by TrueSteelerForLife on Mar 16, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You can't just pick a #1 corner and expect him to start his rookie year

especially in this system. There are exceptions, of course, Revis, Asumaguh (sp?), et al.

There’s maybe 2 1st round corners in this draft class, and even so, neither one of them would start this year on the Steelers.

That letting Ike go this year suggestion is very ill advised.

Not letting him go this year

Next year after his contract expires. What i was trying to say is we need to draft a #1 corner this year to take his place after he leaves (after next year). Like you said it takes corners at least 1 year in our system to develop and thats why we should draft a replacement this year and have him ready to take Ike’s spot after next season

by TrueSteelerForLife on Mar 16, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah. You made it sound like you wanted to draft one, and let Ike go this year

I’m actually liking Kyle Wilson now, especially after all the negatives I’ve seen about Joe Haden…

I heard/read that he's not very good in zone

Also that his INT’s were down (I think), and that he’s not a very good “team player” (I could be thinking about someone else, though).

Found this

Pro Football Weekly:

“Shows hesitation deciphering combination routes and too easily can be sucked up by underneath action. Jumps routes prematurely and leaves voids in coverage behind him. Inconsistent. Tackling is a work in progress.”

Scout.com

“Weaknesses: He’s not strong at the point of attack and doesn’t consistently jam receivers at the line. He tends to run around blockers while defending against the run and pursues the ballcarrier from behind.”

Kyle Wilson is a playmaker at CB and a dynamite returner

If that is your biggest need, why not take the guy? The Steelers, as tomlin likes to say, are below the line at CB right now. This dude helps take care of that and gives you a no. 1 option as a returner. I’d rather have this guy in the fold after the first round and try to use the rest of my picks to solve other problems.

Why pidgeon hole us or box us in with a dude named KYLE?

Seriously …. the steelers will pick who the steelers will pick.

Our greatest need is not CB when we have all our perrenial pro bowlers back in action. aka troy and aaron.

Our greatest need is O Line. Protect the fornicator QB :) Ben is old school. he plays hard, he dates hard, he gets hit hard. god love im. but we need to protect him better. hes old style 70s baller and he will have a coupla years left but thats about it if this shite keeps up with crap o line

fix the sieve that is our O Line first ! Hell id say take Iupati if available and move back up into the bottom of 1st round and snatch pouncey also!!!!!

we drafted a 3rd round CB last year. AND A 5TH!!!! both were excellent college players and BOTH were rookies in the hardest defense to learn.

they called timmons a bust his rookie year too….looks like he will turn out alright!

draft a CB in the first round???? ef that.

unless haden drops close enough for us to move up to grab.

HIGH FIVE HAS SPOKEN.
