Franchise Players
So I'm doing this as a series of sorts; getting fans' opinions on the five most important players to their team. Your turn! One term: they have to be with the team for the long term (four years or more).
In no particular order:
Troy Polamalu, SS: Game-changer at safety, still young. Fixture of the D for years to come.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB: For all his stupidity, he's still a great quarterback. If only he would throw the ball away once in a while...
James Harrison, WLB: Playing at a high level with a chip on his shoulder. Always a good combination.
Santonio Holmes, WR: Having a quarterback is important, having a left tackle that can protect him is important, having people to throw to is important. The Steelers have two of the above, and Holmes defines number three.
Willie Colon, RT: While he's not on the roster on the moment, he needs to be re-signed. He's developing/developed into a very good pass-protecting right tackle.
Post your five below...

I think he means they need to be with the team for 4 more years
so I ignored Smith, Hines and Deebo because of age

Wallace
Is gonna be scary good in my opinion. I mean, he already has ridiculous speed. Once he becomes a better route runner, he could be unstoppable. Plus, he has Hines Ward to learn from.
I think Wallace will cap out early, he doesn’t have huge upside. By this I mean he’ll be an awesome #2 receiver, just never a guy you want for your #1 or a Pro-Bowl guy.
I could be wrong, but that’s where I see him going.

I don't know about Colon
1. Ben (if you don’t got a QB, you ain’t winning no SB)
2. Troy (did you see the defense last year?)
3. Santonio (he’s our future star)
4. Woodley (could be dominant if he gets quicker)
5. Heath (does everything right)
It’s a shame there are no offensive linemen that could legitimately be put in the “franchise” category.
Starks might fall in that category
He did a pretty good job of patrolling Ben’s blind side.

Would’ve had Woodley up there but this is his 4th year, meaning he’s only been with us for 3 full years at this point. Heath Miller is my #6.

3. Woodley
4. Casey Hampton
5. Harrison
This is a list of our most important players right? I think our team would be most affected by losing any of these guys
1. Polamalu: Game changer – Our entire defense is different with him in there.
2. Ben: Franchise QB. I think that a common thread between the “great” qbs is that they have a certain quality that elevates them above the rest. Brady makes clutch throws. Brees is ridiculously accurate. Manning is like an offensive coordinator on the field. Dan Marino had quickest release evar, and so on. What Ben has is the ability to scramble and make insane plays out of what looks like disaster.
3. Woodley – Harrison is still great, but I don’t think he’s gonna get any better. Woodley has a very high ceiling. Though, part of the reason our D can be so great is that he and Deebo can be in there at the same time.
4. Heath Miller – Everything you’d want in a TE. Makes the clutch catches in addition to all ofthe routine ones and hardly ever drops anything, Great blocker – eliminates the need to sub a better blocker and limits the opposing defense.
5. Mike Wallace – Obviously, Hines is one of the most important players on our team but I think he’ll just miss the 4 year limit the original poster was talking about, and I have a suspicion Santonio may go elsewhere for a monster payday. That leaves Wallace. I think he could be great – you can’t teach speed, but he can practice routes and such. He seemed to pick up the NFL game pretty quick, 6 (TD) s is pretty good for a rookie receiver. Not to mention, he didn’t choke in GB when the game was on the line. Sky is the limit for him IMO.
Little long-winded, i apologize
Moron
Troy
Hines

If you're looking for players who will be with us, as far as we can tell, for the next four years...
That limits the list.
1. Troy Polamalu- This guy will be a Steeler for as long as he wants to be. Our best player, on either side of the ball.
2. Ben Roethlisberger- Legal issues aside, he’s the franchise.
3. James Harrison- Only OLB with a long term deal. Put Woodley on the list if you want, but show me any proof he’ll be on this team after next year. It’s not that easy. The Foote signing complicates my theory, but if he loses a step in the next season or two, he can still slide inside and be effective, in my opinion.
4. Casey Hampton- The anchor of our defense. He may be aging, but he’s still the rock up the middle we need.
5. Max Starks- He protects Ben’s blind side. He’s signed for the long term. Colon is not. In fact, I’d be kind of surprised if Willie is still with us two years down the road.
Honorable mention: Rashard Mendenhall. If Arians will let him, he could be our bell cow. Until we are a more balanced attack, he is unfortunately a second option to the pass.
Top 5 Guys who are up in the air but could be franchise guys:
1. Santonio Holmes- Offensive playmaker, chain mover. Big money searcher? We’ll see.
2. LaMarr Woodley- He could be the next great Steelers linebacker. Or, he could be the next great free agent pick up by a team converting to a 3-4. That’s still up to him.
3. Willie Colon- Willie’s progress as a player has most fans confused. Do we like him now? Do we still think he’s the flag magnet linemen who’s playing out of position? One things for sure, the coaches willingness to heap praise upon him could eventually be our undoing, as our “Top 2 Tackle” looks for “Top 2” money elsewhere.
4. Lawrence Timmons- A great prospect and a first round pick, Timmons has never gotten a full chance to shine. As his contract draws to it’s end, does he look for another team that he can be the man on?
5. Ike Taylor- One of the best cover corners in football, with one of the worst pairs of hands I’ve ever seen. He’s our number one, with little else proven behind him. With his contract also nearing it’s end, we may be left high and dry with the cupboards bare at corner (unless a young guy can step up this year).

disagree
top 5 free agents i disagree especially with woodley and timmons…. steelers won’t let them get away.
Really? I guess, in a way, I agree...
Do some cap crunching though. Somebody is not getting resigned, it just won’t be possible. Big money to Hampton, good money to Foote, Keisel, Heath, Kemeoatu, Starks and Harrison, decent money to Clark, Hartwig. And career finishing deals with Hines and Farrior… it’s a lot of cake being handed out at the office birthday, somebody is getting “Milton-ed”, or left out, if you haven’t seen Office Space. If you think we’ll keep Woodley and Timmons, we’ll most likely lose Santonio or Ike. It’s just a matter of who. I never said we’d lose those guys, I just said their futures with this team are still in limbo, which in my opinion, is 100% accurate.
