With the 1st pick, the Stillers select..
Best potential
The Stillers will select either Kyle Wilson, Brandon Graham or Sean Weatherspoon with their first pick, if they stay at the no. 18th spot. All three are impact defenders.
The thought process is which player has the biggest upside in his career, and can have the biggest impact on the team in 2010. For that reason, they will not draft an offensive guard with the 18th pick. Don't forget a Super Bowl was won with that same so-called rag-tag bunch of offensive linemen two years ago and , they ought to be much better in 2010, having improved in 2009.
The thing is, each of these addresses a particular aspect of the defense - the back end, the middle or the line.
My pick is Brandon Graham.

Doesnt seem like Steelers MO
They will take the BPA and will think long term.
- is a bit high for Kyle Wilson. Plus, he’s not the best fit for PITT, as he is more of a bump and run corner, rather than a zone type.
Hard to see them pick an OLB in the 1st with Wood and Harrison being pro bowlers and having little mileage.
Best option is #3 Sean Witherspoon, if they think highly enough of him. He would be a stud in the middle and would replace Farrior in a couple of years.
But I would think there are a handful of others that they would consider at #18, including OL: Iupati, Pouncey, and Odrick. The last two may seem like a bit of a reach, but not if the Steelers think that high of them. Really like the idea of getting Odrick and solidifying the DE’s for years to come. He’s a beast with a super high motor.
Dont think McClain, Haden, or one of the top 3 tackles falls to them, but in case they do, the Steelers would grab them instead.
A potential wildcard is Anthony Davis. He is a athletic phenom who was considered a possible top 10 pick a month ago, but had an absolute horrible combine, based more on his behavior and interviews. Word is he is lacking in the brain. Some mocks have him falling out of the 1st round now. Question is, do the Steelers think they can work with his talent and turn this seemingly meathead into a pro-bowl LT.

Odrick and Pouncey
Agree that both of these would be a reach at 18. I would not mind dropping back a bit in the 1st and taking Odrick. People seem to think he’s an Aaron Smith type of player, and we all know how the defense depends on him.

Graham is a great player
But I think both him and Woodley may be strongside LB only in Lebeau’s system.
Earl Thomas should be in the mix.
I'm good with either
Graham or Thomas : )

Datruth's first mock draft of 2010 for the Steelers
This is from the person that gave you WR Mike Wallace and RB/FB Frank “The Tank” Summers this time a year ago. Let’s see how I hold up this year. Here goes:
1) CB/S Earl Thomas – Start him out at corner and let him play immediately in the nickel D and sub-packages.
2) NT Cam Thomas – He isn’t going to be there when they go to pick in the 3rd round, so go ahead and grab him now. With Ziggy, Harris, McClendon & Thomas, you have the nucleus of the Steelers D-line for the future.
3) OLB Eric Norwood – Built like Deebo and plays like a baby Deebo. Anytime you average double-digit sacks in the SEC for 3 years, you are doing work. Would be a good fit to learn from Woodley and Deebo Sr.
4) RB Legarette Blount – I’m not concerned about him punching a player. Hell, if he smacks a Ravens player in the face the first time we play, I’ll buy him a beer. He’s rising a little on draft boards and he would be the perfect fit as a pounder for this team.
5) LT/RT – Tony Washington – A smooth athlete with good feet. A glaring red flag is that he did something as a teen that requires that he registers himself as a sex offender. More research is needed, but I don’t think you can take him off your board for something that he did at 16. But then again, with the stuff with Ben, the Steelers just might.
5) CB A.J. Jefferson – this is the area where you take a flier on a CB with great measurables who has good return skills and whose best football is ahead of him. He needs a lot of work in the weight room (7 bench presses of 225 pounds) but you have to like the size, 6’0, 195, speed 4.48 in the 40, and the 44-inch vertical leap (best at combine).
5) DT Lindall Joseph, ECU – This is the proverbial 3-4 DE pick where the Steelers try to find gold later in the draft. They did the same with Aaron Smith, Keisel, Sonny Harris and now with Joseph. The fact that Joseph can also play some NT in a pinch helps. He’s coming out early so he’s going to need some seasoning.
6) G/T Ed Wang, Virginia Tech – Wang played left tackle at a good school for four years. Some think that his best move would be inside to guard. Regardless, the Steelers take a flier on this big kid with raw ability.
7) Tyler Sheehan, QB, Bowling Green – I’m of the mindset that the Steelers should trade a late pick to Tampa Bay for Byron Leftwich and then sign him to a 2-year-extension and let he and Dixon compete for the back-up job. But the Steelers take a 3rd QB to groom because Charlie Batch is basically a clip-board holder at this point.
7) DE/LB Adrian Tracey, JMU – A flier on a pass rusher who dominated on the division 2 level. Decent size at 6’2’’, 250 lbs., and runs a 4.7. A roll of the dice, but you never know.
I like most of your guys.
I’m anti Blount I just don’t see what he offers that Redman doesn’t.
Unfortunately I doubt we see Joseph again if we pass in the 3rd. Maybe Jefferson too, he might make it to our 4th but I don’t think he’s there in the 5th.
From what I’ve read the issue with Washington is not just what he did but the fact that his response now is that its no big deal that type of thing is common where he comes from.
