Colbert's my bud
As you all know by now, the draft is a bit of a crapshoot and if you follow the hype and draft accordingly, you are likely to end up as a .500 (winning percentage) team. Take a look back at the previous 4 or 5 years drafts and see if the players you liked for your team before the draft, see how they've performed in the 'bigs'.
The first round is really de-mystified by the time the draft rolls around - everyone knows (or think they do) the top 25 players. Most teams, you must assume, are better prepared than the average draftnik or the ones making a living out of it (Kiper, McShay, Mayock etc). So, the first round is more predictable in terms of who may be picked. In a previous post, I felt if I was drafting for the Steelers, I would have Graham, Wilson, Weatherspoon, Mays or Williams as my projected #1. My board so to speak. When 18 is called , I then make the call. I have a slightly lower grade on Oedrick - low 1st into 2nd round - so if my premier guys are not there, I trade down and tag him.
If, by chance, a CJ Spiller or a Dez Bryant is available at 18, what should be done?
Some other time, I'll rant about why Taylor Mays may be a good fit for the Steelers. So after all that, here are the players on my board, for the rest of the draft, in no particular draft order - just players I am interested in and will further assess:
Koa Misi OLB, Thaddeus Gibson OLB, Jamar Chaney ILB, Sean Lee ILB, AJ Edds LB, Pat Angerer LB, Roderick Muckleroy ILB
Linval Joseph DL, Greg Hardy DE, Lamarr Houston DL
Chris Cook DB, Brandon Ghee DB, Morgan Bennett DB, Perrish Cox DB
Charles Scott RB, Toby Gerhart RB, Legarette Blount RB
Matt Tennant C
Aaron Hernandez TE
Emanuel Sanders WR
As you can see, my draft is defense heavy and it's like that for good reason. This year you can stock up on LB's and DE's, there are many. Where the Steelers fell last year - Special teams and overall defense - are linked to poor depth at the LB and DB position. At least eight starter "capable" backers would be ideal on a 3-4 defensive team. The strength of your team is in the quality of your backups. At LB and DB, for a 3-4, in today's game, you load up on those carbs when you can.
