Willie Colon's agent, Joe Linta hinted in a Pittsburgh Tribune Review article that the Steelers should consider trying to move Colon to a team with a draft pick in the mid first round. Colon and his agent think this make sense since they don't believe that Colon appears that "he fits in their (long-term) plans."

What do you think BTSC? I think a first round draft pick for Willie Colon is a great value but it's also not like the Steelers have tremendous depth behind Colon. I am pretty skeptical that Tony Hills, Ramon Foster, or any rookie that would be available in the mid-first round will be ready to step in this season, so I would consider it a long shot that Colon will be traded.

I heard those false starts were caused by

sounds like posturing by his agent

if the Steelers felt that Starks (the man Willie replaced at RT) was worth an extension, than I have to guess Colon is as well – its just a matter of working out the #s. why would we give up on our starting RT the last 2 yrs and a guy that IS developing into a SOLID RT in both the run and pass game for an unknown? despite the T-Rex arms and occasional mental lapses (which have become less frequent), Willie Fast is our best option going forward, especially if we’re looking at making SB runs the next couple of years.

by t1mmy10 on Mar 3, 2010 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

This is a good guage.

Arians keeps saying that Colon is one of the best right tackles in football. This will tell us. A first round pick for “One of the best right tackles in football” is a no-brainer. A lot of teams would jump at the deal if it were true.

I don’t tink it’s true and Willie will be a Steeler this year.

by WyoFan on Mar 3, 2010 11:27 AM EST reply actions

I don't even think he commands a high 2nd pick either

Tough to be harsh on one of the most improved guys in the line the last year, but I’d still prefer an upgrade over him, if they can make it happen.

by SteelersVT on Mar 3, 2010 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Not going to happen. I’m hoping they can sign him long term. There is no way the Steelers get a 1st round pick for Willie Colon (who is very good, BTW). His main problem is too many false starts.

by Cols714 on Mar 3, 2010 11:33 AM EST reply actions

I think that

Gay and Colon should make it a point to stand next to each other on the sidelines. That would be a funny picture.

He’s probably just grumpy about no new CBA and getting tendered again, instead of becoming a UFA and being guaranteed a real contract.

by barnerburner on Mar 3, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Two Sides to this

1.) Colon, despite the crap he takes from us fans, is developing into a solid RT. He’s not a LT, he’s not a franchise type guy, but he’s a good run blocker, and a well above average pass blocker.

2.) If it’s possible to trade Colon for a 1st rd pick (which I think is a bit of a stretch) then I think you take it. There are some very promising O Lineman in this years draft, many of whom will still be available in the mid first round. Two picks in the 1st will allow the Steelers to address the O Line AND the Secondary with the potential of drafting high level talent. That’s something that FO will certainly be thinking about.

But again, I don’t think any team will trade a 1st round pick for Colon…maybe a 2nd round….so I think he stays.

by NoCal-SteelCity on Mar 3, 2010 12:02 PM EST reply actions

He's an RFA

There won’t be any trades. Someone else can sign Colon, and the Steelers either match the contract or get a 1st round draft pick from that team. Of course, with poison pills being more commonplace, matching the contract can be prohibitive. So it’s all about the draft pick.

They must figure that he’s worth less than pick #32, but more than pick #64, which is why he has that tender. I’d definitely take a 1st round for Colon, but probably not end of the 2nd.

by zacharai on Mar 3, 2010 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think the team trying to get Colon and the Steelers could work out a deal for different compensation.

This high of a tender puts the Steelers in a better negotiating position.

To try and fail may be unacceptable, but failing to try, is accepting failure.

by alfresco on Mar 3, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Basically

A team who wants to take a free agent will put something in the offer sheet that makes it next to impossible for the current team to match it. For example, if a team put in an offer sheet to Willie that says if he plays more than six games a year in Pittsburgh his entire contract becomes guaranteed (what the Seahawks did to Nate Burleson), it stops Pittsburgh from matching.

Colon not likely to be traded.

Other Iupati who is a left guard, the next guard on the list is rated a 2 or 3 round pick. The only other option would be if the steelers have their eye on a right tackle that could be converted to guard or sleeper in rounds 2 or 3 that they think could as good or better than Colon. In that case they might make a trade for another low 1st round pick or a high second round pick. A trade like that is more likely to happen on draft day. When someone who wants Iupati don’t get him.

I know

Colon is aright tackle. But basically the same problem any one above will get all the good tackles and if they are gone before the steelers pick ,why would they trade colon.

The more I learn -The less I think I know! Just enjoy reading and sharing.

Trading Colon makes no sense

His agent getting nutty because of the intoxicating affect of the capless year makes a lot of sense. Clark’s and Colon’s agents are infected by this intoxicating bug I’ll call “opensky”.

by BadMaafala on Mar 3, 2010 12:52 PM EST reply actions

I should say, that I doubt it. Colon is a pretty decent RT. Why would anyone want to move him to guard? That, plus he’s probably not going to be traded as I don’t see anyone willing to part with a #1 pick for Willie Colon.

by Cols714 on Mar 3, 2010 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

This Colon-as-guard meme won’t die. I seriously doubt any team is going to give him tackle money to play guard. And he’ll want tackle money.

He's a solid rt

but who’s going to trade above a 2nd or 3rd rounder for just a solid ot? When it’s entirely possible you could draft a 2nd or 3rd rounder and get the same play at a lower cost?

If his agent thinks that,

then he should be working on a deal with some team that fits that description. As zacharai said, it wouldn’t be a trade, per se, it would be some team making him an offer and giving the Steelers a first round pick. It’s possible, but I doubt any team is willing to do that.

BTSC headline is misleading

His agent is talking about him being signed by another team and the Steelers getting the 1st rounder as RFA compensation. There’s no trade.

He’s an agent who gets paid when Colon get’s a bonus so of course this is what the guy wants.
