NFL Free Agency Open Thread

While the Steelers aren't normally big time players in the free agent market, the next 24 to 48 hours should still be interesting as many teams look to add impact free agents. There have already been some movement including the trade of a well known cornerback and the surprise release of a veteran nose tackle. Use this thread to discuss any and all free agency movement or rumors and we'll try and update it with breaking news from time to time.

Star-divide

  • The Chargers have sent Antonio Cromartie to the Jets for a 3rd round pick in 2011.
  • The Chargers also released veteran nose tackle Jamal Williams.
  • The Panthers released Jake Delhomme despite him being just one year into his new contract. They still owe him about $12.5 million worth of guaranteed money.
  • The Lions have signed Nate Burleson to a five-year, $25 million deal that includes $11 million in guarantees.
  • The two biggest free agent defenders, Julius Peppers and Karlos Dansby, are visiting with with teams today. Peppers is in Chicago talking with the Bears and Dansby is in Miami talking to the Dolphins.

I think singing randle-el would be great for sentimental reasons, but IMO, WR is not a position of need at all. I assume he’d be 4th on the depth chart, and while he would be a great insurance policy for one of the other WRs, he’s been a starter in Washington and I doubt he’d wanna take a backseat to Ward, Holmes, & Wallace. Plus I’m still a member of Team Sweed.

I am a member of team Sweed too

However, I do realize that Randle El can catch and he does a multiple of other things that Sweed does not offer. Randle El would be a great addition if we could get him for cheap and he realizes he is not a starter for us.

Maybe after being on a losing team for a long time he wants to be with a winner again, maybe?

Signing Randle El...

could be interesting. We would not need Logan for PR/KR. He could be another WR. Also, could you imagine a wildcat-type, not advocating for it, with DIxon, Randle El and Rashard in the backfield..or even Ben and Randle El back there in shotgun with some plays designed for Randle El..i know with BA it probably won’t happen, but it would be good to see some trick plays being run again. Of course though, we don’t know if the FO is interested or even if Randle El would be interested in coming as a back-up

Things can always be worse....

Truth

My resigning him comes as a speculation that he will come cheap and in a back up role.

Crazy

Sweed!!! They need to get rid of this joke. Two years and he can’t catch. He’s got to go. Sign Randle El and keep Logan or if B.J. Speller is available in the first round sign him to spell Mendenhall. Randle El is a way better catcher than Sweed. Only thing Sweed has over Randle is height other than that get rid of this team Sweed crap

by Byron Ferrell on Mar 5, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

Vincent Jackson

took 5 years before he became decent, what would the chargers have if they’d let him go. Also we have the luxury of having another WR Wallace stepping up so now we can afford to see what happens with Sweed, if he can pull it together then that will mean a huge upside, right now that outweighs the risk of if he doesn’t pull it together, it really doesn’t hurt the team cause the #4 receiver isn’t going to see much of the field in our offense.

3 years

is usually the rule of thumb, if he can show that he at least has gotten over the mental aspect of the game then he’ll def be worth keeping around for a 4th year.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 5, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

3yrs or 4yrs huh. If a reciever can’t catchin the 1st two years he isn’t going to do it the next year. He has to prove me wrong. Vince Jackson that is the best you can come up with. Lynn Swann , John Stallworth, Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, and even Mike Wallace the rookie all the their 1st years caught the ball and proved their values. Sweed needs to go

by Byron Ferrell on Mar 5, 2010 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

Just so you know

Its not like Sweed dropped everything that came his way, he dropped two or three passes, he had 2 catches in the AFCCG for important first downs late in that game that everybody forgets. Its clearly a mental thing and if he gets over that mental hump the guy has all the talent in the world to succeed at this level. He has shown that with his route running ability and even his leaping ability in the pre-season. Yes he has a lot to prove but there has been signs of improvement. First year – terrible pre-season, terrible regular season, last year – good pre-season, bad regular season, the next step is to have a good regular season which to me would be around 30-40 catches this year. We’d be set at WR and wouldn’t have to look for one after Hines retires. You should want this guy to succeed so we can focus on other areas on the team that needs attention to.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 5, 2010 10:54 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

It’s not what I want. He needs to want to succeed. And if it wasn’t for Hines he wouldn’t of got back in the game. But he has key drops this year and those two key first downs will not drop the fact that he still is dropping key catches. Learn from your first mistakes. Learn how to catch. He didn’t forget in Texas

by Byron Ferrell on Mar 5, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Well thats it

he didn’t forget in texas, which is why he was suppose to be a 1st round WR that fell due to injury. The guy has a ton of talent. He knows how to catch the ball, I personally think the Cincy drop was just plain bad luck, he caught the ball but when he feel to the ground the force popped the ball out his hands. He just was too relieved that he caught the ball and relaxed. The guy has way too much pressure on him and wants to succeed more than anything. If I’m the team I work him into it, screen pass here, slants, curls, out pattern before I get him deep. He is worth trying to give him every chance possible to make an impact.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 5, 2010 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Eh even at texas

he had problems catching the ball and ran sloppy routes. He fell some because of injury but he also shot way back up after his combine work out, in big part because of his 40 time was much better than expecting. If not for that the might not have even gotten picked in the 3rd round.

well

he apparently is running great routes in the NFL, he gets open, he just having a problem completing the catch, I find it hard to believe he was a bad route runner in texas and all of a sudden turned it around in the NFL, thats one of the hardest things to do for a WR but who knows.

Sweed

Agreed there tann. I don’t think the Steelers have given Sweed much opportunity to work through his issues. He certainly hasn’t been give many easy plays to build his confidence.

+1

Too often young receivers are trying learn so much early on (route running, complex offensive systems and coverages) that they think to much during the play instead of just letting their natural ability take over. I’m not saying Sweed is on the verge of a breakout but it’s fairly common for them to get it together in their third year.

Sweed also has youth, speed, vertical leap, and probably a cheaper contract than Randle El. Sweed has one more shot. You cannot condemn him because you can recall 5 catches he dropped, the sample size is too small.

Sweed Drops

Don’t have to know 5 just key ones
Baltimore: dropped pass that would of been touch down in AFC Divisional Championship
Last year
Cincinnati lost TD drop that would of kept us in the lead and we would of won
Baltimore lost in Overtime drop that would of gave us a first down in 4th quarter
Key Drops

by Byron Ferrell on Mar 5, 2010 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

Baltimore, we won the game, irrelevant. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ward or Holmes have a drop in the playoffs themselves. CUT THEM!

We lost the Cinci game for more reasons than Sweed’s drop. Most notably, getting a lot of 3s instead of 7s. Reed had 2 sub 25 yard field goals.

I am pretty sure that Sweed was on the IR by week 12. And I just looked through the box score, he was not targeted in the 4th quarter of that game.

There are many free agent DBs, vets and younfellas. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers bring in Brodney Pool for talks. I think they will make a few ‘uncharacteristic’ moves in FA this year so they can take care of specific areas in the draft.

No against Randle EL

I was upset when he left but now I don’t want him back for several reasons. One he doesn’t have the same quickness he used to which comes from being 30. This affects his ability to return punts which we saw last year and he ended up getting replaced for those duties. This same thing as affected his route running without the same burst he doesn’t get separation from defenders like he used to.

I love the guy think he is a great person, I remember acting like a little kid in a candy store when the steelers went back to the super bowl, he did some coverage over them and you can just see the chemistry he had with the team and friendships that were genuine. But I believe his time in the NFL is over. Besides we don’t need another short receiver we need a tall one to help in the red zone. I still have hope out for Sweed.

I agree with this, I was thinking we’d have Sweed and Randle El interchangeable for #4 and #5 depending on the assignment. And El would most likely see the field with an injury or PR. I don’t think his speed/quickness has completely disappeared however. I think he could still be good for 1 or 2 in a diminished role.

It ruins football

No salary cap is just stupid and ruins why the NFL is as great as it is and why no team wins year in and year out. It is easily the hardest pro sport to repeat as a champ continuously in because of the cap. I love that. I don’t want a Yankees of the NFL who just buys victory every year.

Oh ok

I thought you were going else where with that. Just some clarification. I agree the sport needs a cap. But I think the owners want to get rid of it, they don’t want there to be a min amount that they have to spend, thats one of the biggest things about the cap.

Minimum

is for the players. Just like you don’t want the Yankees you shouldn’t want the Marlins either, even though they have won with talent, they usually sell their players off. What does that say to the fans, come to game even though we’re not trying to put the best players on the field this year and try to win a championship this year.

The NFL is about winning this year and this year only. When next year comes its about winning then also. They want everyone every year to have a shot at winning it all, it makes it more exciting and more people watch.

Players union has said that if a cap disappears they'll never agree to reinstate it.

I wonder if they know this is not in their best interest, as the bulk of the money will be given to superstars and guys who owners like Snyder overpay for while the average salary for most players will fall due to the disappearance of the salary floor. No cap for the players seems to fall into the “be careful what you wish for” category.

I don't think he's tendered at all

The contract he signed last year had an option for the second year but the second year would be at 5.2 million. I don’t know when they have to announce whether or not they’re picking up the option but surely the Eagles aren’t going to pay him 5.2 million this season.

by cgolden on Mar 5, 2010 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

Talk here in Philly says the Eagles want a 2nd round pick for Vick.

That seems too high. I don’t think anyone really knows what they’re going to do with their QB situation. If they trade McNabb (not likely), they’ll want to keep Vick to compete with Kevin Kolb for the job. If they don’t trade McNabb, it makes no sense to keep Vick and Kolb, and that would seem to make Vick the odd man out. But if you’re asking a 2nd rounder for him it suggests you’re not that serious about moving him. Who knows? The Eagles release information like J. Edgar Hoover did…

p.s. — Vick picks up a $1.5 million roster bonus today, for what that’s worth…

I don’t know if Vick is even worth a 3rd round pick at this point. He is unproven since his return and is a huge gamble.

that's a decent point

I will sort of agree. I think Tomlin has shown some loyalty to guys who are “safe” options and I think that word perfectly describes Moore. Whether or not it’s because it’s “his” guy, I don’t know but I think Tomlin likes to minimize risk and Moore is a guy who does that. The downside of that is that “safe” options rarely offer upside.

Yeah I don't get the Chargers tendering him that high either

I’m sure teams were interested because he’s a solid change of pace/return man/back up, but they’d have to be crazy as hell to give up a first and 3rd, and pay him 7 million. You can probably find a better starting option at rb just using a 3rd, and won’t have to pay him 7 millio. I can’t imagine any team is even considering him now. And with all the upcoming FA’s SD has it makes absolutely no sense to waste 7 million on a back who isn’t going to play every down.

I have read he has some off-field issues, and wasn’t a great teammate. Those things don’t matter if a guy performs, but he was a lesser talent when the Jets defeated the Chargers.
Could be he didn’t want to be there any more, but there are too many warning signs.

He got a bunch of picks but it was mostly because he took a lot of major risk to get those picks and gave up major yardage when he didn’t end up getting picks. I think it’s going to be like D’angelo Hall and Asomugha all over again, where teams expose Cromartie like they did Hall.

Neither do I

Sheppard didn’t have a good season this past year, but neither did Cromartie. Maybe they’re banking on him having more potential and bouncing back since he’s bigger and younger, but I think there’s a good chance this story plays out the same way.

Three things in Cromarties favor:

1. He won’t be facing the best receiver anymore.

2. The Jets get good pressure.

3. He’ll get balls thrown his way a lot with Revis across from him, and as an athletic gambler he could grab a bunch of INT’s and if the QB doesn’t have time to wait for the play to develop, he won’t get beat as much.

Nothing else to do...

They can’t draft anyone this year. So they might as well spend the money they would have given to #1 and #2 draft picks to the best player in FA. It might not help since most of their problems stem from a weak O-Line and no WRs, but their defense also needs some talent.

Niners need to get in the Donovan McNabb sweepstakes

They got two first rounders this year and they need a QB. Alex Smith ain’t fooling nobody into thinking he’s the franchise.

If the Eagles are trying to trade McNabb for a 2nd rounder the Niners should hop on it. They wouldn’t lose anything by dealing their other 1st rounder.

I’ll buy on McNabb. I think his big problem is that he every now and then has a clunker. I think if he got into the playoffs and had a lucky run he could win one for his team. Excluding those clunkers I think he is a great QB and if I needed one…I would put my hat in the ring.

Well then we'll have to respectfully

Agree to disagree. His career has been such a trip. The fans booed him at Radio City when the Eagles drafted him because everyone around here wanted Ricky Williams. Well, the Eagles probably got the better of that deal.

At the same time, fans around here jump on and off the Eagles/McNabb bandwagon so frequently my head spins. He would probably do himself justice by leaving and perhaps a fresh start would be just the ticket to success. I don’t know. Tough to call the guy a bust in the true sense of the word because he has had ton of regular season success. I just think they have a better chance if the move on a get Kolb in there.

He was at his best when he was mobile and elusive

since he was injury prone early in his career, teams no longer fear that ability. His accuracy is inconsistant and, generally, his innacuracy crops up at critical junctures and he ends up throwing at his receivers feet, way behind or way over their heads. Not sure I inferred that anywhere

But, no, I’d rather not have either. SF tried to get Warner which would have been better if for at least a year. I guess, given the absence of available QB talent currently on the market, if given the choice, I’d take McNabb over Smith.

Hank Fraley cut

reposting this comment from the thread about ARE:

Hank Fraley got cut and is available. tbh, there’s a fair amount to like here. He just got cut by the Browns since he lost his job to Alex Mack and we could probably get him cheap. He’s played center, guard, and ‘eligible’ tight end and he knows a division rival’s playbook.

And best of all, he filled in for the injured LeCharles Bentley, so he must be good.

Is there any RFA you guys think we should sign to an offer sheet. One that intrigues me is Carolina DB Richard Marshall. It would cost a 2nd rounder, but he is still young (25) and i think he would be relatively cheap vs A.Rolle/D. Robinson. He would make a good compliment to Taylor and allow Gay to move back to the nickel where he played as a rookie.

True

I figured there was safety in numbers. The bar was ALL Steelers fans. Only problem, which I didn’t find out until I got down there, was that another bar was directly across the street. After the game, a bunch of hammerheads on motorcycles crowded the parking lot and tried to stir it up. Some uncomfortable moments there.

As for count_em, he was anihilated. He was singing (poorly) in the back seat, songs that weren’t even on the radio. He kept rolling down his window and shouting at people in cars next to us while we sat in bumper to bumper traffic! Ugh, it was long ride home.

WTF????

Wonder if there is any validity to this, or another one trying for 15 minutes of fame and a quick buck.

Things can always be worse....

You have got to be kidding me!

The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

by chewiesteeler on Mar 5, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Can we just lock him up somewhere during the offseason to keep him out of trouble?

This is not good.

I hope he’s innocent, not because he’s a Steeler, but because I hope no assualt took place.

That being said I am tired of all the drama and BS this guy seems to drag around him, especially in the off-season.

No.

We need another QB while Tebow is playing TE/FB/C.

way to romance it ben.

Um ewww....

I was so excited to read about all the free agency moves and hearing about Ben has just ruined it. I mean we don’t know if it’s true but this is the second accusation and it just doesn’t look good. How can he face his teammates after this? Ugh!

Innocent or guilty

I think he can use some guidance. Ben seems to be a very angry insecure young man. I hope to God he is just unlucky. At this point nothing will surprise me..

by jglo on Mar 5, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

he just needs to realize when he wants to get with a chick that he shouldn’t just bone her on the first night.

by guns dont kill people pittsburgh does on Mar 5, 2010 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

How is he angry and insecure?

That doesn’t make any sense. Because you have sex a lot you are angry and insecure? This is just money hungry girl who wants her 15 minutes of fame.

This ain’t the 1960’s. It’s 2010 people.

Ben is just another Pro athlete, nothing else. He just excels at his job more than others do. Most of these athletes are all the same. He didn’t change after his motorcycle accident and he won’t change after this either.

by StoneColdSteel on Mar 5, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Having sex a lot does not make one angry and or insecure

Just an observation by someone who looks beneath the surface. You see him in interviews, certain mannerisms just led me there. Now I can be wrong but sometimes we communicate more than we mean to. I personally don’t beleive he is guilty of this, but I do believe that he can use some help in feeling comfortable in his own skin. Ben can be far greater than he actually is, but I have a ‘feeling’ that he stands in his own way.

And to the Bungel vultures, coming on here with your accusations and crass behaviour, just show how hateful and empty you are.

Didnt think we had a chance

If we do get him, would be a MAJOR plus. He’s not a shutdown corner by anymeans, but would make a solid #2.
