Sitting on our hands again.....

Once again we sit around as the teams in our division get better. Our latest news update is our QB

in more trouble with the law. We tender an offer to a corner in Gay who spent more time falling down

than he did covering people. Does anyone know if there are ANY planned visits from free agents

or have we decided to stand pat with last years 9-7 record ? If anyone has heard anything on that

front please post. Thanks !!!!

If you have been a Steelers fan for at least 2 years

You should know this is how we do.

We build through the draft, and low key free agents as stop gaps to fill the depth chart

This time is always a boring time for Steeler fans because we arnt that active in Free Agency

After the draft we will sign people to fill spaces that we couldnt in the draft.

That's the problem

It’s called hopping on the bandwagon. Some people haven’t been fans for very long, so they have no idea what the organization is about.

The name changes, but the content always remains the same.

If the rest of the AFC north has made anything clear to us in the last decade, it is clearly that they know how to win superbowls. I guess I’ll just stick with my scrub team the ‘steelers’.

I am starting to believe

that FA, big FA, hurt a team more than they help. Washington is 8-8 without Haynesworth, with him they are 4-12. NE wins 3 SB the ngoes all big name FA and they haven’t done anything since. Now spygate may have something to do with that.
The Giants sign alot of defensive help and the Defensive falls apart inroute to a 8-8 season.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Mar 6, 2010 10:30 AM EST reply actions

So many reasons this can be true

You take a guy and give him a huge payday, so maybe he doesn’t have the incentive to play as hard as he did before. Plus you’re putting huge expectations on someone who wasn’t playing with the same team and players or maybe even in a similar system the year before—there might be an adjustment/acclimation period. But I think the biggest potential landmine is in team chemistry…think some of the other players in Washington might have resented Haynesworth and his huge contract? That’s not going to translate to better play on the field.

I think our strategy of finding lesser known role players and veteran backups in free agency is the way to go. Maybe not as high reward strategy sometimes, but certainly nowhere near as high risk.

It’s easy to take on somebody else’s problems without realizing it. After all, there were undoubtedly reasons other than the official one why they let somebody walk. Furthermore, one player, no matter how good, does not make a team. I personally think that the Bears have made an expensive mistake in staking so much on a couple of big-name free agents, no matter how good.

"Other people's problems"

Great quote from Weeb Ewbank, and so true.

If I was the Bear’s owner, I’d be concerned when the GM and Coach are making deals knowing that it doesn’t work out, they’re gone anyways. Asking an owner to write big checks for years to save your job this year seems about the most selfish thing one can do, as far as the team is concerned.

Glad we don’t have to deal with flailing around like that.

by gostevego on Mar 6, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Relax, as pointed out above, FA isn't our

playground. And it hasn’t hurt us even a little bit while other teams spend so freely….and as Steel in FL points, they don’t always get the bang for their buck.

If you need re-assurance, then think of Big Snack and Reed re-signing as our FA splash. We get to keep arguably the best NT for another few years while we find and groom someone to take the slot down the road – which answers one of our big needs. Reed, while immature and stupid at times, kicks really well in Heinz – not an easy thing to do.

by dawgs144 on Mar 6, 2010 11:30 AM EST reply actions

Yeah and not only is FA not our playground

with extensions for Woodley and Holmes looming we likely don’t have the resources to go crazy in this current noncap situation. Plus it seems like for the most part everyone but the Bears are “sitting on their hands”. Plus where exactly would you want them to be spending this big money? We don’t really have any major holes and none of the FA’s available really would fit on our team.

I can understand

How hard it is to sit around and watch the Steelers be inactive in free agency. It’s just how they operate. Still, would like to have seen them go for a good FA corner… But that’s just not how they do things.

by docsteeler on Mar 6, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

What free agents would improve the team?

It was injuries last year that made the defense worse. When you remove players like Troy & Smith, the rest of the team can’t perform at the same level.
The offense was great (except for 2 games and inside the 20yd line).
The largest loss was by 7-points (against the Browns – 1 of the 2 games from above)
There are many young players that will get the opportunity to show their abilities in 2010.

When the Steelers do sign a Free agent, it is an inexpensive player flying under the Radar who may just work better in our system then the one they were in.

The biggest FA signings still on our team are Farrior and Clark. After that Hartwig? Most of our players were either drafted by us, or signed as Free agents without playing for another team.

We don’t sign other people’s players, they try to sign ours, and we replace those players for less money and continue to roll. Many people would want us to sign some FA’s right now, because this team won a Super Bowl 2 years ago, and we would love to see one or two more, and adding a big time player would seem to seriously increase that chance. But the Steelers plan is to keep a top tier team at all times, stay in contention and see what happens. It works better than the alternative of build a team for a window of opportunity, sign big time FA’s to boost your chance and then rebuild when the team falls apart.
