According to Profootballtalk.com the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to bring back two players that each won one Super Bowl ring with the club although both were considered long-shots to ever suit up in black and gold again.

Ryan Clark visited the Miami Dolphins earlier today and even hinted publicly that Miami was a good fit. Many Steelers fans had already turned the page on Clark, but his signing will surely allow the Steelers to have more freedom in the 2010 NFL draft.

Antwaan Randel El was one of the heroes of Super Bowl XL, and was cut by the Washington Redskins late last week. It's somewhat difficult to imagine what roll he will play in the 2010 offense, but with the signing of Randle El and today's earlier signing of Arnaz Battle, all signs point to Limas Sweed possibly not showing up on the 53 man roster this year.

So unexpected. Any ideas on the money involved? Really glad to have him back. Now we can develop a guy we draft

i'm very curious how his contract breaks down

maybe they gave him a lot his first year to count as the signing bonus, thus having it all against the uncapped year. then there isn’t that much until his last year again. i dont really see him lasting until 35 either.

Does he still have gas left in the tank? I think 2 years worth. The hammer will swing again for the boys of Steel. I like it. The pick up of Allen should make for a fun competition in training camp. Now here’s where the tears get bad. Sweed. Oh god no. Team Sweed is done. I’m canceling my membership. I’m telling you guys that if he blows up on some other team I’m going to be super upset. But we don’t have time for shenanigans. We need to win #7 soon. Randle El helped us get one, in the most memorable way possible. I think he can help us do it again.

4 receivers: Ward Holmes Wallace and Randle-El.

I think Ward moves down the order and Wallace Holmes and Randle-El are our main three this year or next. That much speed really frees up Ward against lesser coverage and Randle-El can get some slot time where he can be dangerous.

Also El is another option at returns. Maybe Battle takes Logan’s spot, or Sweed stays as a fifth, will be interesting to see.

by Phantaskippy on Mar 8, 2010 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

And even on one knee

Ward will never get freed up

Every defensive coordinator knows what he’s capable of. No one in their right mind would overlook him. Especially to put more coverage on Antwaan. I love Ward. BTW today is his birthday. I and about 15,000 people wished him HB on Facebook. Point is that he is not declining. A slot receiver needs to run crisp routes, have great hands, timing, and be tough as nails. Randle El is not that guy. Hines epitomizes it.

Whoa, man I’m sorry. I said that badly.

I didn’t make my point well here, I’m a huge Ward fan, he ranks right alongside Darrell Green and is in my top 5 favorite players all time. I in no way meant to say he’s not a viable receiver anymore.

The point I wanted to make was how defenses will cover us. Holmes Wallace and Randle-El all can catch balls if they are open, unlike Sweed or Washington. They are all also quite fast. I think we all saw good veteran corners do well against Ward last year, he’s still got the hands, the route running and the intangibles, but his speed isn’t there. If we have three threats around him though, coverage is going to be lesser on Ward, and he will tear up.

Also because we have Wallace and Holmes that play well outside Randle-El can play in the slot as well, where I think he can be very dangerous.

I was quite excited last night and hadn’t slept after working the night shift because my daughter was sick.

by Phantaskippy on Mar 9, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Quick thoughts

- I live in DC, and Randle El hasn’t looked like the player he once was. Hopefully that’s because he’s been flanker instead of in the slot, but I’m worried he doesn’t have the burst left.

- I’m not sure it spells the end of Sweed. Randle El could be back-up to Ward and more of an inside guy with Wallace and Tone on the outside.

- Too bad there may be no one to throw to them. We need to sign / draft a backup QB with starter capability. Brittle Batch and Pencil-legs Dixon aren’t gonna get it done.

- Between Ryan Clark and Will Allen, Willis McGahee has to be hoping he gets cut so he doesn’t have to face the Steelers.

- Ryan Clark, this is your chance to prove that last year you were injured or suffered without Troy, because you weren’t getting it done.

- For that reason, i hope the coaching staff creates a competition at safety, and doesn’t just hand it to Clark.

- I’m concerned we’re spending too much money and keeping folks around at the expense of roster spots and playing time for younger players. As happy as I am to see these two back, I actually preferred the days when we let our older, over-the-hill free agents walk.

- But I’m happy to see that the Steelers are, once again, pursuing a free agency strategy that allows them to draft the best athlete available without an immediate need.

by syrsteelerfan on Mar 8, 2010 8:06 PM EST reply actions

drafting a back up catcher with starter potential

would mean using a 2nd or 3rd round pick on one. I imagine they’d have to be EXTREMELY concerned about Big Ben to use that high of a resource on a back up.

Why hate on Dixon?

I think he shows tremendous potential. He acquitted himself quite well against the Ravens for one half of play. That’s better than most QBs. Unfortunately they switched to zone defense and stopped blitzing in the second half and his hot reads weren’t bailing him out anymore. Going through the progressions against a complex zone was too much for him in his first start.

I say give the skinny kid a chance.

by Chicago Steeler on Mar 8, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

He’s one player I really like. It may be wishful thinking, but I think Dixon has a lot of upside.

As for all the free agent moves by the Steelers, well, this is one of the best offseasons I can remember. Well, aside from the Big Ben being an asshole thing. That’s a mood killer.

by indianasteelers on Mar 8, 2010 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong

I don’t dislike Dixon. He acquitted himself ok in his one game. But even ignoring the pick, he was running a stripped-down, run-first offense, got thrown off kilter by a change in scheme, and the coaching staff admitted they didn’t roll him out more because they were worried he’d get hurt. So, he’s shown he’s average at best for now — with potential, which is great.

But can any of you see him getting through 16 games without getting injured? And if he does, how long does Charlie Batch (another high-character guy with an injury history) last?

We need to look seriously at our QB situation and find at least one more guy. I think they should have resigned leftwich back in the day, and if they can pick up someone like that again it would be great. As for the draft, if one of the top names slide or one of the guys with potential (LeFevour, Snead) fall to 4th or later I’d start looking at them.

by syrsteelerfan on Mar 8, 2010 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

On Dixon and the Qb situation

I agree that Dixon appears to be fragile. But it’s hard to see the potential of a QB if you’re scared to let him shine. You just have to hope he stays safe and our linemen do their job the best they can. I’m also on your side of people who wanted to see Lefty come back and back up ben. He did great when thrown in in DC. I want to see us make him an offer. He isn’t getting a starting job on any other team at the moment and he praised our organization after he left. But if Lefty doesn’t come back I feel fine with Dixon getting some reps when Ben goes down. I only pray that he hits the weight room and bulks up some.

BPA

With all these vets on the roster the Steelers can now draft BPA in every round. There will be plenty of competition at every position and in the end some of these guys may not even make the 53.

I also think the steelers have resigned alot of older players and hopefully we can draft for the future and let the younger player learn behind the vets. Then when there time comes to play they are ready. The steelers could use a ilb, nt, fs, cb, ot to learn and take over for the older guys in a couple of seasons.

Happy day?

Great to see these two back, especially El. The only thorn in our side right now is the status of the face of our franchise, which may or may not be the next celebrity mugshot. I’ll say this though: if by some miracle this case is dismissed and Ben proven innocent, we’re gonna put the New Orleans Superbowl Mardigraw to shame.

I'm pretty sure there's no chance QB will be near the top of their draft board.

More like. LB, OL, DB(corner depth is still needed and it’s unlikely Clark will see the latter year of his deal), DL, and hell maybe TE, WR and RB will be drafted before they draft a qb.

Unless someone unexpectedly plummets a 4th round qb would probably be an overdraft. i was just discussing that with my friend…McClain will be expensive to move up to get. According to the draft trade value chart. This means we have to give up a 1st and 2nd to move up to 10….way to much in a loaded draft.

by SoCalSteelerFan on Mar 8, 2010 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

OK

it’s just me, but I find the Randle-El signing a bit puzzling.

Last year we threw the ball 536 times for about 351 receptions. Only a few teams GB, Ariz, IND, NO, threw more than us. Of those teams I can’t think of a team that had 4 high level WR’s that each caught 50 plus balls. Now think about Ward and Tone are each good for about 70-90 balls. Wallace should be in the 50 range. Heath should have about 80. If somebody explain to Arians that you are allowed to throw the ball to the RB’s Mendy could get to 50.

Is it me or does that not leave any balls for El-Yeah? Not to say that he doesn’t have value as a back-up, gadget guy. But I wonder if he even gets to play much unless someone goes down?

Having said that, we just became MUCH better at converting 3rd and long.

Two starters

Hines and Tone number one and two. Weekly battle for the no. 3 job between El and Wallace and a camp fight for number 5 on the roster between Logan, Sweed, Battle and Grisham. Nice setup.

Buddha, I agree, let’s see what they do about retooling at corner. Let’s not forget we have two second year corners, though, and that’s usually when guys start to contribute in Lebeau’s defense.

by Steelfrog on Mar 9, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

how about

3a and 3b, I would hate to choose one over the other, Wallace looked really good last year, and with another offseason under his belt he could be awesome this season. On the other hand El has the abilty to do so many things you would definitley want him on the field whenever you can.

by indianasteelers on Mar 9, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Quality Depth at WR

Holmes, Ward, Wallace, Randle-El, Battle, Sweed, Grisham… Logan

There’s not enough room for everyone. Possibly Sweed gets new scenery to pursue his career elsewhere. If not, there’s going to be a healthy competiton get on the roster, and to get ‘a hat’ on game days, particularly between Sweed, Battle, and Grisham, who I imagine after putting in work on the practice squad, would like to crack the lineup.

Ward’s hammy has been an issue for years. Last year we had a problem with depth after starters went down at other positions. Should Ward go down again, Randle-El should be able to “make plays” from the slot.

While Arians hasn’t drawn up as many effective wild n’ crazy plays as say Whiz or Mularkey or Gailey or Earhardt for that matter, I think not having Alan Faneca and top-end athletes like Slash Stewart, Dermonti / Jeff Hartings, and Randle-El could be large reasons why. Pretty much any offensive coordinator would appreciate a new playmaker.

I love Randle El and his contribution to the team leaves me with a nostalgic joy, but the truth is that he’s not the player he was when he left. Holmes and Wallace are the future. Hines is still a big contributor and we have other options with less tread wear. Why go this way? Are they looking for a gimmick type player? Another mentor for Sweed? What’s up?

Thats amazing

Glad to see El back. He may not be what he use to but he was a likable player, so happy day. The WR corp just got FUBAR (in a good way). Obviously, Ward, Holmes, and Wallace are in, but whos out?
We have El, Battle, Sweed, Grisham, and Logan…..

- El, I think hes, can’t explain why.
- Battle, I look at him the same way I did McDonald last year (except McDonald was better). Good slot guy, but I don’t think he’ll stick around.
- Sweed, I’m still not giving up on Sweed. All these WR signings don’t look good for him but I’ve got a feeling he has one more year. Hes got too much potential to throw away, he just needs to get his head straight.

Now as far as Safety is concerned...

The Clark signing seems like a good move, depending on how it’s structured.
Clark produced pretty well in ’06 until a groin injury, in ’07 before gall bladder, spleen, and sickle cell, and then on the Super Bowl #1 ranked D in ’08… but not so good in ’09.

We are banking on Polamalu making a full recovery. We recently added Will Smith who started just 26 games in 6 years and recorded 4 career INTs. We know what Tyrone Carter can and can’t do, and we hope Ryan Mundy takes big steps this year. Possibly Deshea or CB Lewis possibly could move to Safety. Are you satisfied? Provided the mentality is to take nothing for granted, are the pieces in place in this secondary?

Well dang it, problems of quality and depth in the secondary were exposed last year, or more plainly, we got toasted last year! Cutler on about his 2nd day with a new team and not many offensive weapons beyond a speedy rookie Knox, slung it around awhile and found enough for a W. Bruce Gradkowski tossed it up to a speedy rookie for yards and scores and yards and scores. The struggling Chiefs with/without an offensive coordinator had their way. Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay’s very good offense seemed unstoppable., etc., etc. So Troy’s coming back… We good? Which brings me to…

Alex Marvez is a Senior NFL Writer for FOXSports.com at has this to say about a certain free agent safety:

Darren Sharper: He’s a savvy leader coming off the best season of his 13-year NFL career for a Super Bowl winner. But at age 34, Sharper isn’t going to land the kind of lucrative contract that his play warrants. As each day passes in free agency, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis looks wiser and wiser for not using a $6 million franchise tag on Sharper. Barring an unexpected windfall from elsewhere, it looks like Loomis will have a chance to re-sign Sharper for a lot less.

I ask you this, how great would it be to have Ryan Clark backing up Darren Sharper and Troy Polamalu? “That’s crazy!”, you say? “We can’t afford it.” His game has been very good for years. This instinctive ball-hawking centerfielder who can also lay wood still has it, and would give Polamalu ultimate flexibility to do everything, making him, dare I say it, even more dangerous. LeBeau is someone who would maximize their abilities. Baltimore just acquired Boldin to go with Rice and Mason plus Stallworth, Heap, and Washington/Williams. Are we prepared to shut them down?

Think value. It’s what Steelers front office does. Apparently even after Sharper’s excellent Super year last year, he’s not fetching a ton of interest in the market. Thank goodness it was Porter who made that play in the Super Bowl and not Sharper- because now is our chance to talk with him, at reasonable fair value, weighting bonus money towards this uncapped year.

Eric Berry will not be availabe at #18, and if he were to unexpectedly fall to #10/11, it would require our second round pick and a willing partner in Jacksonville or Denver.

Yes, we have Holmes and Woodley and more guys due up. We must plan carefully. And I say Sharper is potentially a good value signing that won’t break long-range budgets. Let’s take advantage of the Packers’ decision to not franchise him; we wouldn’t lose picks. Let’s structure the bonus into this special uncapped year. He’s a guy that could make plays to save or steal games in a Division race and in the Playoffs. We want to make multiple Super Bowl runs the next few years. And this would be a continuation on that path. Think value.

I agree with your points on Sharper.

I know he is old, but he still demands respect on the field. I think if he stays in FA for a while, we would be wise to sign him. The only problem with that is our resigning of Clark. I think it’s time for us to focus on our CB’s now and leave the other positions alone. On top of that now this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute just sit right there, I’ll tell you how I became the Prince of a town called Bel-Air.

Signing averts crisis

Ahh. I was beginning to panic. The secondary was looking pretty thin there.
With Clark headed to free agency, our apparent starting free safety was Mundy. I like Mundy, but he needs work. And slim chance any rook FS can play center field for us right off the bat.

With an injury-prone Troy we were left with Ike as the only reliable starter in the whole secondary. As such, I still appreciate the move for the backup safety Allen. We have him signed for at least three years, so I suppose he’ll be the FS/SS backup we need.

Bottom line to this ramble: I’ll bet on an OL man at #18.

The real winners here are all those with the old Randel-El jerseys

Wonder if he gets his old # back? Will all the Randel -El fans have to have both versions?

Unless

Yancey Thigpen suddenly demands to have 82 retired, El should get his # back..:)

Awesome! I love it! Totally unexpected too, I am pleasantly surprised!

Antwaan Randle El is going to help, big time!

And I’m glad to see Ryan Clark still with us now

I don’t mean to change the subject here, but, what position is going to be our 1st Round pick now?

With Casey Hampton resigned, it won’t be NT now

Middle Linebacker maybe?

Earl Thomas or a corner is my pick.

How about Earl Thomas AS a corner?

I think...

They’ll go with the best available OL/DB/LB, in that order, I would think. But let’s see if there are other FA signings…

Consider it unleashed!
