Upon further review ... who needs the draft.
The steelers went a long way to solidify their roster yesterday. In a move that was extremly uncharacteristic, the steelers actually made moves in free agency. The additions of Randle El and Battle have pretty much closed the book on the Limas Sweed Experiment. Tyrone Carter's surely gone, replaced by a younger, capable backup/potential future starter. Retaining Ryan Clark means that all the 2009 starters will be back for the 2010 season. The steelers are also attempting to bring back Larry Foote and probably will. At this point i wouldn't be surprised if FWP were back in Black and Gold by the begining of next week.
Now if we sign Foote and FWP, what the hell are we going to do with all those draft picks. I see the steelers receiving two compensatory picks on top of the seven pciks they already have. By next week the roster should look something like this:
QB: Ben, Dixon
RB: Mendy, FWP, MEMO, Logan, Redman
TE: Miller, McHugh, Spaeth, Johnson
WR: Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Randle El, Battle, Sweed, London, Grisham
OL: Starks, Kemo, Hartwig, Essex, Colon, Scott, Foster, Legursky, Hills, Urbik
DL: Hampton, Hoke, Smith, Keisel, Hood, Harris
LB: Farrior, Timmons, Woodley, Harrison, Fox, Foote, Bailey, Frazier
CB: Ike, Gay, Burnett, Lewis, Pittman, Madison
S: Troy, Clark, Allen, Mundy
ST: Reed, Sepulveda, Retkofsky
Thats 56 realistically possible cadidates for the 53 man roster. Now add nine draft picks to that. I don't see anyone drafted after the third round making the roster. With that in mind, i say trade up for either Berry, Hayden or Bulaga.
What ya think.

trade up
IMO that’s been the plan from the get-go………trade up for who, now that’s the question !!!
No to trading up
This is an extremely good and deep draft, especially for lineman. Need to look at the LONG term picture, just like every year. The fact that we have recently added a few backups (and Clark) in the last few days should not have us loose sight of that.
We should NOT change our approach in this draft. Rounds 1 thru 4 of this draft will contain our future starters and possibly Pro Bowl players for this decade. The guys available in rounds 3 & 4 would probably be 1st and 2nd rounders in other draft years. I dont want less of these guys I want MORE. Therefore, in THIS draft, I’d rather we trade down to get more round 1-4 guys, then trade up and have less.
We are good that we dont have any glaring emergency need for this year with the re-signing of Hampton and Clark. Allows us to focus more on BPA, which should be more the mode always. Still would like to get a lineman with the first. We should also get a DL and secondary player in the 1st 3 rounds.
I dont buy the argument about trading up to get an impact player this year. In this draft, they are ALL impact players in the 1st round.

The recent signings point to Pitt continuing their tradition of nabbing the best player available
I think we’ll see this happen yet again. However, I’d still wager that they will pick up a few defensive players with their top picks, particularly to shore up their secondary.
This IS going to be an exciting draft now
Especially because we’re freed up from filling immediate needs! Lots of BPAs on defense coming our way in April.
Contracts and age are the key
Ike is in the last year of his contract and he’s aging.
Essex is in the last year, although we may have already addressed that position.
Willie Colon was tendered, which means they could try to draft a LT and move Starks back to RT.
We need quality depth at OLB.
