I am so ticked off at Big Ben

I know, I know.

We are all supposed to reserve judgment on Ben until the facts come out.

However I think most of the facts are already out:

1)  Ben placed himself in a compromising position AGAIN.

2)  Ben's decision making is extremely questionable at best  (no helmet, two accusations of sexual abuse).

3)  Ben demonstrates that he is not yet an adult through his poor decisions.

4)  I had to dance around the issue with my eight year old daughter who proudly wears a #7 jersey after she watched SportsCenter.

5) This latest incident proves he is not worthy of being the face of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

6)  Little Ben is thinking for Big Ben.

7)  Where there is smoke, there is fire.

I've been a Steeler fan for 35 years and  I will be until I die.   But this guy is disgracing our beloved franchise.  If  he is convicted, I say "good bye, Mr. R."  Even if he is not, I think something seriously needs to be done about his choices.  Put him on a short leash.  We cannot and should not sit still for this behavior as fans.

Yes sir ...

it is a disappointment. Yes, he sure should make sure he avoids situations which can get him in trouble, whether or not of his own making. Yes sir, just because one can go without a helmet doesn’t mean one should do so; with his responsibilities to others, he did blow that call.

Maybe he can blame it on a head injury.

Reality is...

The Steelers are set to win now. And with Dixon at the helm, our chances go down drastically. Let’s just hope that he has become a target because of his decision making problems. If he DOES have a problem, he needs some counseling quick because the Steelers have quite a bit of money invested in him. I believe that even if he is innocent, the Steelers will have some words with him and monitor his personal life with a little more scrutiny going forward.

by Piratefan13 on Mar 9, 2010 12:36 PM EST reply actions

Worst case for this year

If Ben is charged (unlike the Nevada case), Goodell might step in and suspend him for a few weeks. Dixon did a hell of a job against the Ravens. He showed a lot of promise and poise. With all of the other weapons on this team (offense and defense), I believe he can lead the charge for at least a .500 record. Hell Dilfer won a SB with the Ravens.

Goodell may even let the court system run it’s course until he levies punishment. We all know how long court proceedings take, so my guess is we will not be without Ben this year. If there is a lockout in 2011, and Ben is found guilty, I guess it won’t hurt as bad because we’ll be without football altogether.

Don't count Dixon out so fast!

I watched that game 6x’s & the real problem was in the play calling. Why? Because you could see the handcuffs BA & Tomlin kept on the young QB. Dixon can make every throw in the book, has a GREAT deep ball, and when it breaks down, we WISH Ben was that athletic! I believe we’re going to let Willie go, & get one of those young RB’s to back up Mendenhall,(hopefully Anthony Dixon), & go back to thumping folks in the run game this year w/ play action being the lead in the passing game. What did The Bus say,“Smash-mouth football, Steeler Style!” I truly believe we could win now with Dixon. Maybe not the Lombardi, but 11-5 would be well within our reach with a healthy team, no doubt in my mind!

He is a 28 year old super star

that is living out most mens dream. He has no more of a problem than any other 28 year old bachelor IMO. The big difference is he’s the star QB in the NFL on a team that is know for its integrity. I really doubt that he raped anyone, we all know he can get more butt then toilet seat. She’s probably like most of the women that scream rape after they have had sex with a big time athlete, just looking for a pay day and will most likely get one. I’m not a Stealer fan and have no dog in this fight, just my opinion.

by DIRE WOLF on Mar 9, 2010 12:55 PM EST reply actions

Disgusting

I didn’t realize there was a national epidemic of superstar athletes being accused of rape. Oh wait, there’s not. It’s Ben and Kobe. Who else?

I’m betting you think most rape allegations are false. And that women generally ask for it and then cry rape afterwords because they regret it.

Sex assault is an under reported crime, because of the shame, stigma, and difficulty of it. A majority of victims dont report because it’s easier than having to go through the legal process. When it comes to athletes, there’s even more pressure one the victim not to press charges or go forward.

I knew a person in college who was assaulted at a party where she drank too much. She reported the assault. Imagine everyone you know (everyone you work with, everyone you ever went to school with, your ENTIRE family) found out that someone had sex with you against your will. Not only that, a conviction is impossible because there were only two witnesses (him and her) and they have different stories regarding consent, and they were both really drunk.

After it was all over, she realized that her life would have been better if she had never reported. She even gave that advice to someone else in a similar situation a few years later. That’s without the perpetrator being a superstar hero to millions.

If you think accusers are just out for a payday, then you are blinded to the reality of sex assault.

Haha, dont worry I got the message all the same

Also, you’re right, it’s not a rape charge. I was actually responding to DW’s statement about the victim being just another bitch who screamed rape. I’ll follow up with 3 points and then leave your board forever:

1. I dont know whether BB is guilty or innocent. I dont judge him just b/c of what someone said. Nothing has been determined, and he’s innocent until proven guilty.

2. My post was directed at Dire Wolf, and people like him who believe “She’s probably like most of the women that scream rape after they have had sex with a big time athlete, just looking for a pay day and will most likely get one.” Superstars are so rarely accused of rape, and their accusers so thoroughly embarrassed/humiliated/destroyed, that it’s retarded to believe this. Dire Wolf and his ilk believe that victims are lying because: “He’s a Celebrity and she’s a nobody.” It’s really disgusting.

3. Steeler fans need not worry about BB ever going to jail, even IF (and I stress the word “IF”) he actually did sexually assault her. Popular celebrities have a huge advantage in court. They are almost never convicted. OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Kobe, Ray Lewis, etc.

by 5020 on Mar 9, 2010 1:51 PM EST reply actions

Don't know what happened in GA ... but

I have no problem with Ben going out to a club and having a few drinks with his buddies to celebrate his birthday. I don’t have a problem with him trying to pick up women he doesn’t know and hopefully having ‘relations’ with them ….. but if I were Ben, I need to start thinking about things like:

Does having youth, money, fame and the day being my birthday excuse behavior that (if true) is at best boorish and at worst a felony? Does it provide me with entitlements that the rest of the world don’t have? … Or does it mean I have a greater responsibility?

I should not put myself in a position where someone could possibly accuse me of a crime such as sexual assault, (especially after an earlier incident that isn’t resolved yet)?

I should not put myself in a position where I disrespected my teammates who stood by me and the organization that makes my lifestyle possible (especially after an earlier incident that isn’t resolved yet)?

I should think twice, at the age of 28, before possibly acting like a total creep with a 20-year old I don’t know and with whom I have nothing more in common other than being in the same location? And isn’t 28 too old to be acting like an 18-year old frat boy away from mummy and daddums for the first time?

I should think twice about how my actions might be seen through the eyes of those I truly care for, especially my mother and father?

WHAT WAS HE DOING WITH A 20 YO?

Some random thoughts:
He is 28 years old, What is he doing in a college bar? Let alone with a 20 year old. At least Tiger paid for his sex. Grow up. Guess, I need a new jersey. If he does not go to jail his days as a Steeler are numbered. I assume he will be suspended for 4-8 games this year or next. What an idiot. If the rumors that he skips out on checks are true, he is rude. He is a millionare.

In Milledgeville Ga they are all college bars, or ghetto clubs. He owns a lake house on lake Oconee which is why he was in the area. He’s 28, it’s not like he’s an old man. Big Stupid Continued

All those things stated eloquintly above by whogastim are true. In the end it is just plain stupidity. I said the same thing about one of the leaders of my NBA team KB24.

At the end of the day when you have a 102 million dollar contract and so much to lose, you can still party if that’s what you need/want to do. Hire some real good professional body guards. Girl want to get in my VIP room girl gotta sweet talk the bodyguard. (Your honor, she told me this or that to get into the VIP room) Bodyguard see client getting out of hand bodyguard steps in and extinguishes the situation. Girl comes to my home at 2 AM? Bodyguards are there to let her in and out of my compound/hotel room. Corroborating witnesses who keep you out of sexual misconduct accusations and altercations with riled up fans (see Ray Ray & Pacman) outside strip/night clubs.

When you have 102 million and that much to lose and you still need/want to be an immature jerk you need to have insurance. Basically, Big Stupid is driving around over the speed limit, all liquored up with no helmet and without car insurance. Some people learn from their mistakes. Others are just stupid.

My point...

Is that Ben has more responsibility that the average 28 year old. Yeah, it’s normal to be birddogging a 20 year old, but for Christ sake, use your head for something other than a brain bucket.

My guess is that he inappropriately touched the girl, was told no, and continued until it got out of hand. The girl was likely drunk which will probably be part of the defense his attorney’s use.

I thnk Ben is an asshole and I wish he was not our franchise quarterback. But winning is the name of the game and fans like us would go ape shit if the Steelers cut him because of he was charged (or event if he is convicted).

Okay

No helmet, being in bars and nightclubs whne he knows he could be a target because he is a public figure, stories of everything from being outright rude to people (stiffing checks, grabbing ass in bars, etc) to two accusations of sexually inappropriate behavior. I mean come on. While some of the stories might be embellished, I still say he has shown himself at least capable of the behavior he is being charged with.

Are those examples of good judgement, putting himself in good situations or not feeling entitled to what he wants?

Why don’t we hear of other franchise QB’s doing this stuff? Brady? Manning? Brees?

I’m just disappointed in him.

by DwightWhite's Missing Tooth on Mar 9, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

No helmet is about the only one that is fact.

Being in a bar and a nightclub on your birthday is questionable? Good God. This is a human being, he is allowed to go out and have fun. He doesn’t have to eat, drink, and breath football. There are TONS of public figures that go out in bars and clubs…that is why we have VIP sections, bouncers, and security guards.

Key word “stories”. Stories are like fairy tales, they are generally made up, unless there is some fact to back them up, I’m not going to condeom BEn because some random John Doe’s word on the internet that Ben was a jerk to him. I saw Ben stop a bank robbery, save 8 puppies, and help an old woman across the street one time. Believe me?

There is a huge difference between an accusation and an actual occurrence. The first accusation I believe is clearly false. This one, is still just an accusation with no fact to come out yet.

Ben Roethlisberger is not Brady, Manning, or Brees. He is himself. Comparing two people based on character and morality is not fair to do.

True, Johnny,

but there are plenty of sports stars who know better than to place themselves in situations that can get out of hand. And I’d think the Steelers would demand that Ben hire a bodyguard to accompany him (discreetly, of course) on his bar forays.

Listening to a morning radio show here in WI, there was a reporter for a local sports news service (lots of Brewers and Packers coverage) talking about Ben – word is that he has a problem with alcohol. This would explain something about his actions, and is something about which the team can legitimately make some demands.

My heros have always been Steelers...

by wozzle on Mar 9, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure a bouncer would help

But I am all for trying. The franchise shouldn’t be able to tell him he can or cannot go out to the bar (at least in the off season on his free time).

More of that “word of mouth” stuff. I don’t like it. I don’t put any weight on “well I heard from a friend…” stories or the like. So I am not going to comment on his alcohol consumption because I know absolutely nothing about it.

The whole reason d’ etre’ for this site is for people to espouse opinion and conjecture.

Without that, and restricting ourselves only to “facts”, we have no blog.

Stop it.

You are far too insightful, intelligent and well-spoken to be so narrow-sighted on this particular topic.

I, for one, would highly value your thoughts and ruminations on the few facts we do have.

But, so far, you have withheld those very ideas while actively disagreeing with many people who do share their opinions on the subject.

This is very unlike you, and somewhat troubling to me, as a fan of your thoughts in most situations.

Oye

Right. This is a Steelers football blog, where opinions are welcomed.

However, I find it a bit different when those conjectures are condemning a person for rape. Make all of the predictions and what not you want about football and Steelers, but I think condemning someone as a person on 2 accusations (one pretty much already proven false) and a second where nothing has come out to be off base. All I was saying, is let the facts come out before we say our QB is a rapist. Exactly what Rooney is doing.

I truly hacven't argued anywhere

for or against any guilt on either side.

And I understand and agree with your belief that no one should assume any guilt at this point.

I’m just strongly opposed, on my on moral grounds, to language that discourages anyone from expressing honest questions and opinions. I don’t mean mindless blathering here; I’m referring to the fact that you have enormous influence on this site, and are appearing(to me) to be campaigning against open discourse. I oppose finger-pointing and assumptions too, but not fair inquiry.

That’s my point. In that I don’t think we are diametrically opposed, only on somewhat different rhetorical trajectories.

by tobiathan on Mar 9, 2010 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

If I didn't you were worth arguing with

or the topic worth keeping open for honest debate I wouldn’t waste a moment’s energy.

I’ve been around for a little while and don’t say a lot, but I think it’s very important that we hash this issue out together, as fans, instead of letting the haters do it first.

by tobiathan on Mar 9, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

I want people to be able to express their thoughts and opinions. Its what makes this forum work, as I said recently to that SF7 guy.

However, I felt like DWMT (the poster of this thread abbreviation) was saying that this event DID happen based on the fact that this is the second accusation. And that therefore we should all condemn Ben for it.

The fact is this situation sucks, and it has put us all on egg shells tip-toeing, trying to approach every word and opinion properly. I only want people to wait to throw Ben in the trash until we hear what did or did not happen. Sure, formulate opinions on what we may or may not do, but don’t condemn him just yet.

What I mean is, there is a big difference between saying someone is a bad football player before having the sample size to do so than calling someone a rapist before you have any actual facts that say so. Does that make sense? I hope.

The point you are missing

The public does not need facts to judge. The damage is done regardless if he is completely exonerated of any wrong doing. Do you think the public cares is he wins, loses, or settles the McNutty case…that is old news my friend and the damage was already done. Innocent or guilty the opinion as you can see has already been formed. The facts as you revert to are pointless. 5 years from now I am still going to have to listen to Browns fans refer to him as Toothlessraper.

by TheCommish on Mar 10, 2010 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

That is fine

But I would hope that Steelers fans and fans of Ben would wait to hear the facts before throwing Ben into the gutter after what he has given to this team.

I could not care less about what Browns fans think. They claim every year they are going to compete in the division…I’ve learned to block out their nonsense.

He is and should be held to a higher standard because of who he is and the money he is being paid. He owes that to the franchise and to us fans.

MY GUESS is that he inappropriately touched the girl, was told no, and continued until it got out of hand. The girl was likely drunk which will probably be part of the defense his attorney’s use.
I THINKBen is an asshole and I wish he was not our franchise quarterback. But winning is the name of the game and fans like us would go ape shit if the Steelers cut him because of he was charged (or event if he is convicted).

Those are the definition of assumptions.

Well, my friend from WV

Actually I did write 7^2 on the 2nd line. Each line from the top down is a gradual progression from the original problem on the first line to the final answer on the bottom line.

And by applying the Pythagorean theorem, I was able to discern that 8.4 + 45.718 is, in fact, 54.118.

I have no need to say goodbye to Ben yet. If and when that time comes, I will say goodbye. Until then I will reserve judgment. The word “alleged” says it all for me (FOR RIGHT NOW). If BB is found guilty and convicted, it will be of his own doing. If nothing comes of this allegation, maybe he will have learned a lesson.

I personally am tired of hearing about BB’s antics off the field and I wish he would just stop. It’s white noise that is getting in the way of me fully enjoying my team without distraction. But with that said, as long as he is our franchise QB, he has my support. And he will continue to have it until he is convicted of a crime.

There have been many on this site before me

and there will be more to follow, who have said that it will never be possible for the mere mortals that we are to understand the mind set of a guy like Ben. This is a man/boy that has been the king of the world since early in his youth and is now being paid a king’s ransom to play a child’s game. I do not mean to say that it is right but these people do not live in anywhere near the same reality that the vast majority of us live in.

The worst part of the whole situation is that we, society, are largely responsible for this behaviour. We put these athletes on pedestals from an early age and turn them in to gods for our own enjoyment. Bestow upon them great riches then expect them to behave in a manner similar to that which we expect from ourselves. Many have shown the ability to do so, but a greater majority have not. Further, many who we all believe to be acting in an appropriate manner, quite likely, are not.

We sit here in judgement of a man who may or may not be guilty of a truly heinous act. This is the appropriate forum to do so regardless of the presumption of innocence before guilt. My hope is that the mortals who are charged with sorting through this mess can arrive at the truth, the guilty be punished and the innocent be spared.

With fame comes responsibility

Nobody here is saying that BB cannot go to a bar or have fun (at least I hope not), but what I think they are saying is that he has to smarter about his personal life. I’m sure that Brady or Manning go places in public but you never hear of anything because they have mastered mixing fame with a public life.

Being famous reduces some of your freedoms because going out in public draws attention. And I know that some days I don’t want to talk to anybody, I can imagine how difficult it could be for a celebrity when you are having one of those days.

There was a huge discussion above concerning facts, while I agree that it is necessary to stick to the facts concerning such difficult situations as these… Here are some other facts to think about.

1. In America, with the help of the media, celebrities like BB are already tried and convicted in the court of opinion and specualtion. I When the story broke I had difficulty not combining the two accusations (past and present) and I quickly became concerned that there was a pattern.

2. Regardless if BB is innocent of either charge, he will always be guilty to the public. It’s much like when a newspaper prints a story on the front page that is completely false and then prints the apology the next day on the last page of the B section.

3. Professionalism is professionalism, whether he is 28, 24, or 30. Being a member of the NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers, BB must follow certain guidlines and rules in order for him to continue playing. Roger Goodell has proven to be a nightmare to past lawbreakers and sets very stringent expectations for the players of his league.

4. You don’t hear about Manning or Brady or Brees because they are far more professional than BB is at this time.

by Piratefan13 on Mar 10, 2010 8:26 AM EST reply actions

All excellent points

With that fame also [typically] comes a heck of a lot of money, which has its own hazards. It used to be that if you had enough money you could buy your way out of almost any embarrassment. Although there is still an element of that – how many rich people are on death row? for the most part things aren’t like that any more. Apparently not everyone has gotten the memo.

YesSir, Mostly if you are a Cheatriot fan, then burn any trace of decency with those tapes.

Of course BB needs counseling and support. But as answers for your points:

1. There´s a pattern here BB has been accused, not said in any way He´s guilty. Fact. This also as You poin out in your second point.

2. That´s completelly true.

3. See the afforementioned header.

4. At this point BB is, and He had been a target, and mostly worst for All Us an easy one, and most outside of the field.

I feel that is that most of Us that defend in any circumstance Our team first, and that is that I read from those that try to show that at this point BB, maybe be guilty for most of NFL fans but not for The Steeler Nation, and mostly not showing unity around Him, and like some of Us had said before BB needs counseling or be guarded outside the field.

That reminds me.....

Of something Billy Graham once said (and that I found to be very profound). He said the men went to places in a different car from the women. He did that because he didn’t even want “the appearance of sin” or words to that effect. What I took from his comment was… it’s not enough to NOT do something bad. You have to make sure you didn’t even APPEAR to do anything bad. There had to be zero speculation.

Ben should have been smart enough to realize that Andrea McNulty has now ruined his chances of “hanging out” in public in bars, etc. and nothing ever happening to his reputation. Whatever he does from here on out will be scrutinized to death. And he cannot figure this out because….?

The truth remains to be seen...

…however, as so many have stated: It doesn’t look good. Ben needs help, period. Whether that may be alcohol treatment, counseling, or therapy…remains to be seen. Whether these current allegations are true or not, makes absolutely no difference. The bottom line is, Ben needs help.

You, as Steeler fans…need to strive towards him getting that help. You, as Steeler fans DO NOT need to divide youselves, and take sides on these matters…just help the man.

Look, I’m not a fan of Ben at all (I USED to like that he idolizes Elway), but even I can see a pattern. This pattern, unchecked…can lead to more and more crimes against women. These types of crimes are unforgivable.

Garbage, my friend.

Granite is a commodity now, no longer a luxury material. The way we (and others) import directly from the quarries in Brazil, Italy, and India…it mis very affordable. I’m putting Granite countertops in 200k spec homes. Pay the 5 or 6k and get stone.

Or you could do it on the cheap like I did.

Buy yourself a $75 tile saw, get granite tile. Remove the formica top, lay down some marine 3/4" plywood, and slap your tile right on it. I got a few expensive black tiles to cut into 1" strips and make a parquet pattern. Trim the edges with 2" maple. I think it looks pretty spiffy. I can send you a pic if you want. To be honest, it was essentially free, because the tile was leftover from redoing our bathroom.

This situation has to be a wake up call to Ben

Ben needs to get his act together before he loses everything.

He IS the face of the Steelers and when he acts like a retard, not only is he making himself look bad, he’s bringing the franchise with him. The Steelers need to crack down on Ben because if they don’t, they’re going to lose fans, their going to lose money, and everybody is going to look down on the Steelers. I don’t want to see the Steelers become the Oakland Raiders: nothing but a bad reputation.
