Limas Sweed
Out of town fan needs some info. Are there any rumors around the burg about what is happening with Limas Sweed? He was put on IR late last year, so there must be something going on (not just bad hands).
Anybody hear anything? I'll even take rumors. It would be a shame to have another second round bust. With the free agent signings, it seems like the team is ready to move on.
In my dreams, Limas figures it out, and we have Holmes, Sweed, Wallace and Ward. Quite an attack.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
I heard a rumor that
Limas Sweed has a tradition to eat really buttery popcorn before games without washing his hands. He struggles to hold on to the ball due to that residue left by the greasy snack. Tomlin asked him to cut it out and he refused, so he got put on IR for the “undisclosed finger” which was in fact buttery fingers.

I thought
that no one else knew that. Where did you get your information? The FO clearly has a mole.

From what I read...
and I can’t remember where (and I apologize), he had a breakdown between the Raiders and Browns game and was taking heat from the locker room for dropping the hail mary I believe in the Raiders game. Something like that. What I get out of this is that Limas Sweed does not have the mental toughness to make it on the Steelers, maybe even in the league. I hope that is not the case, but he wouldn’t be the first. Here’s to hoping Limas gets ready physically and mentally for the upcoming season. I’d hate to see this guy figure it out somewhere else.
Man you and me both
If he blows up on some other team in 2 years I’m going to be full of “I told ya so’s”

Thought I heard Mark Madden report that LS was in and out of the hospital with depression problems. Hope he’s allright but I have to think that his roster spot is in jeopardy.
" It's caught out of the air "
That's too bad.
About half of America has the same problem and there are many little pills that can help it. I hope he can get it under control and be the player most people think he can be.
You don't need pills Limas
You need a big bag of stinky sWEED!

I hear he was suing someone but dropped the charges

trade
Let’s trade him to the Titans. Seriously. Him and Vince Young had good chemistry in college and they need some receivers. They might bite. If he develops there, so what. There are plenty of good receivers that aren’t on the Steelers and it’s not as if he’s doing anything with our offense now anyways…
or Kenny Britt for Matt Spaeth?

maybe...
more realistically, they’ll give us a 6th-7th rounder?
His potential is worth more than that
That is why we should keep him.

Totally agree
I think the Steelers should let him try and prove himself in camp one final time. Third times the charm or three strikes your out kinda thing. If he can’t beat out Arnaz Battle then AMF.
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

I'm not willing to give up on Sweed yet
Vincent Jackson took 56 seasons too develop now he’s a probowler. And it’s not like he’s taking up valuable space.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
Sweed's tools are scary good,
even better than Burress, both horizontal and vertical. I’m assuming that the FO has already consulted sports psychologists and had evaluations done.
Maybe he has Steve Blass disease?
My heros have always been Steelers...
What could he be depressed about?
Give me a million dollars and see if I would ever complain. He can buy anything, screw any girl (sorry), and go anywhere he wants and yet he’s depressed?
Wow.

Meh… By that rational someone with depression shouldn’t be allowed to work? Why not?

FYI, Bradshaw suffered from depression
Terry Bradshaw said that he suffered from depression his entire career. If that is it, Sweed will be okay if he would just learn how to catch the ball again.

He needs to hang with Holmes and enjoy some
of those blunts man. Why bother with little pills when mother nature’s remedies are so damned good. He needs to get stoned to the bone and get his head into that playbook. my two cents….seriously. This guy was 1st round talent that fell to us b/c of his wrist? injury…we have invested a 2nd round pick in the guy. He gets open and blocks good when asked to do that. Just needs to concentrate on catching the ball. In other words, he’s almost just like Nate Washington who was not as high(no pun intended) a pick. This is Sweed’s last camp for sure unless he gets with Tone and gets that noggin on right.
Sweed Gone?
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10068/1041369-66.stm
Notice the line from the article talking about the number of Steelers receivers “not counting Sweed” and the reference to Sweed walking out the door.
That gives the Steelers five receivers, not counting Sweed — as many receivers as they kept on their 53-man roster last season.

that'd be a shame if he just gave up... I still think
that this kid could be a helluva wideout. guess we’ll see.
He's gone
Forget about the Sweed project IMO. Maybe he sticks around till camp, but I’d be surprised. If we’re lucky we get a conditional 7th round pick for him by a team that thinks they can do better with him…
Consider it unleashed!
I'm beginning to suspect this is true
Sadly. But i’d rather trade him to the Texans and get something for him.

Trade talk
Remember when we couldn’t get anyone to give us a 7th rounder for starters Joey Porter and Larry Foote? How are we getting anything from a guy who’s only showed butter fingers on the few occasions he’s been in a game and was deactivated for depression? That trade talk is just silly… While we’re at it we could also trade Scott Paxson for a first round pick!
Consider it unleashed!
You might want to do some more reading on that
they left for other reasons

Why not keep Sweed as the 5th/6th WR?
Prior to the signing of Randle El I thought Sweed was on his way out in a hurry, but now i’m not so sure. I’d hate to have Sweed as the #4 WR opending day as the Steelers have come use a lot of 4WR sets, but as a 5th WR i’m more open to the idea for a few reasons.
Sweed is only due a salary of $470K next yr., which in NFL terms is practically nothing. Given that the top 4 WR seem somewhat set (Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Randle El), why not keep Sweed as the 5th/6th WR along with Battle at least for training camp?
If Sweed can pull it together beat out/equal Battle, the Steelers could opt to keep him as Sweed is 25 yrs old & cheap, while Battle is 30 yrs old (& likely more expensive). Bottom line, not that much is really expected from your 5th WR on gameday; he may not even dress. If Sweed shows some decent progress I think you keep him as his potential is much higher than that of Battle.
Of course all this is dependent on Sweed making progress & showing improvement. If he can’t do that, then he truly has no place on the team.
I'm bummed out
I’m really hoping Sweed turns it around, I mean we could use his skill set if he can catch the ball.
Steelers football is 60 mins.
I don't think it's a set
More like a single skill – run! The guy will never rebound in Pittsburgh, even if he can get his coordination back from spastic land. He needs a fresh start somewhere so he can regain some confidence. It’s all about mental composition for him, he needs to be in the right state of mind to be able to perform again and there’s too much baggage in Pittsburgh. For what it’s worth I think Tomlin calling him out this year was a mistake. You do that with proud, underachieving players (i.e. Mendy) but not with players filled with self-doubt and performance anxiety. One man’ opinion, of course…
Consider it unleashed!
