Yeah I talked to B.A. and I talked to Mike about my role. My role...right at this point, they want me to come in a be the #3 receiver, the third receiver if something happens to Santonio or Hines. If I got to go play outside, I can go play outside and am certainly capable of doing that, then coming back inside or whatever. Then, we haven't really talked about punt returns that much to be quite honest with you. But at the same time, Mike made sure to make it clear to me that it's a competition and you need to come out, get the work done. And I'm not coming back playing for Cowher, so I got to continue to go out and show and prove....even though Mike knows I can play, he still wants to see it, because I'm not one of his guys, if you know what I mean. But I am one of his guys now, but I wasn't one of the first when he first got here. So I know I got to go out and continue to show and continue to prove that I'm supposed to be out on the field just like they brought me here to do so. And if it means being the third or playing the two or doing some punt returns, then that's what I got to do.

I'm a little surprised

to hear about the role BA and MT discussed with him. I see him as a definite punt returner and the back-up/speller for Ward and Holmes and someone who will split duties with Wallace.

I know Wallace had some drops and miscues, but to just hand it over to a new guy without the regular talk of competition? I suspicious, seems like El is taking more than he was offered.

If I read it correctly, he said

that he would be #3 IF Hines or Tone went down. That makes it sound like a backup – speller type person.

Which would mean that

Wallace would be the regular #3 and would move up to #2 if Tone or Hines is injured. Then El moves up to #3. That makes El the regular #4 receiver – right?

I think

Wallace would continue to be the #3 and ARE would leap frog him to the slot/ #2.

by _ET_ on Mar 9, 2010 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, so El

is really the #1 backup at slot or outside. Makes since because Wallace is really a stretch the field guy.

Yes you are correct.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out. I think Wallace is going to be even better this year, so El has a fight on his hands if he thinks he is going to just slide into that spot.

I'm not getting the vibe that he thinks anything has been handed to him

sounds more like he gets it that this is a different team than from when he was here before, and that he understands he needs to show he’s got some juice left in the tank.

Not that it makes much of a difference, but I would find it very hard to believe that Randle El isn’t light years ahead of 2009’s # 4 receivers as far as production.

Contrary to all of the Sweed getting kicked to the curb talk, maybe coming into camp as the last receiver relieves some pressure on him? I hope so, because he’s shown some magic in how wide open he gets. Hate to see that kind of talent go to waste.

Hmmm

So if I understand this correctly he was not one of his guys but now he is one of his guys because at first he wasn’t first, and then when coach first got here, and he got here first, he couldn’t be one of his first guys because he wasn’t one of the first to be one of his guys.

Yea I'm not buying into

Mike Wallace losing that much time. Sure El will get his oppurtunities, but it’d be more than foolish not to put the better player on the field more often, which at this point, is no question Mike Wallace.

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

This is good for Wallace

Both of these guys are going to work hard for that #3 spot. Training camp is going to be pretty competitive this summer…I like it.

I'm not sure

but he did say the 3rd receiver if Hines or Holmes go down. That would make him the 4th if everyone is healthy (El behind Wallace). His statement is very confusing but this may be what he meant.

Time will tell

by shleeve on Mar 9, 2010 6:32 PM EST reply actions

I think it's pretty clear

He says the number 3 if something happens to the other guys. Anything else simply doesn’t make sense.

None of the top three guys is going anywhere barring injury:

Hines is playing great football. He caught 95 balls last year and there is no reason to expect him to drop off much this year.

Wallace picked up nearly 800 yards in the air as a Rook. Only Tone and Louis Lipps had more in Steeler history in the rookie years. And the kid is just going to get better and better.

Tone is the best receiver we have at the moment.

Which means ARE is #4. The good news is that ANYONE (ok almost anyone – sorry Limas) should be able to go out there and look good with those three guys stretching the field.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 9, 2010 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

yea, i like our WR corp

arguably, now, the most deep in the league. As of right now; Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Randle El, Battle, Sweed, Logan, Grisham. Those first 5 can all be in the top 3 for any team.

by shleeve on Mar 9, 2010 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps

#’s 4 and 5 on his list were Randle and El :^)

well

his numbers over the years (with some exceptions) put him as a #3 receiver. My bad if I am mistaken.

by SubLime on Mar 9, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

So god forbid

Holmes goes down to injury. Who fills his spot? Not sure Ward is still fast enough to run the entire “route tree” and Wallace still doesn’t have the crispest routes. Is Randle El up to that task? Or do we believe Wallace will be there by the season?

Combo of Randle El and Wallace

Randle El as the veteran would be the short-term option, hoping that Wallace continues to improve enough to take it over. Then the two would switch (younger legs and all….).

oh, i was talking about the #3. Wallace was playing behind Ward on the depth chart. But i think he can play SE and FL.

by GDEUCE on Mar 10, 2010 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

Rec'd

I think people get too hung up on numbering receivers. It’s not like Troy is our #1 safety and Clark is the #2. They are different positions. It’s a similar deal with receivers.

by Varmint on Mar 9, 2010 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

I know this isn't going to be too popular, BUT

we need to make sure we have a capable guy to throw it to them to make them all they can be.

I saw some of the other comments on BB you made, and I can’t help but think the whole smoke/fire thing.

So as a devil’s advocate, are we comfortable if Dixon is the one tossing to our shiny group of wideouts? He looked pretty impressive against the Ravens…is he capable of sharing the distribution to ge the best results?

by dawgs144 on Mar 9, 2010 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

It wont be an issue this year.

First of all the wheels of justice dont work that fast. Even if they discover DNA evidence, which only would show that he had sex with the girl, which I believe is likely, that would be all that it shows. That would give enough probable cause for a grand jury to move the case to trial, but then the gathering of witnesses, preparation of the case, finding a spot to hold the trial that will be unbiased, will take at least a year or so, if not more, this season is really not one to be too worried about.

His first case is against a raving looney. Now that he has 2 allegations he might be best served just paying these women off and resorting to high priced call girls for the rest of his “fun-time”.

Having a shadow looming over his head last season didn’t seem to affect him too much, he seems to strive under pressure, perhaps the Rooneys and Tomlin are setting these gals up for Ben just to keep him under constant duress.

And to answer your question, Dixon sure looked capable for 60+ minutes of that game against Baltimore last year. Don’t forget Dixon was a “top 10” pick a few years ago before he got injured. Unlike Sweed we didn’t expect much from him. His play in the preseason and in that BMore game last year showed us that. Is he going to be as good as been, most likely not. Is he capable of being as good or better, There is no reason to believe he isn’t.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

DNA evidence can also be skin under the fingernails or saliva.

I am

This will be his 3rd year, had some real game experience, had to have learned from his mistake in the Baltimore game, I think if Ben is not available for a long stretch of time they will use Dixon with a play to win mentality instead of – lets not get him hurt mentality like they did in the baltimore game

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 10, 2010 9:19 AM EST up reply actions

I think he will compete for #3.

Ben knows him, and El is a veteran, I think Wallace is definitely going to be a better receiver in his prime than El, but I could see Randle-El taking third from him. depending on the set.

If Ward or Holmes go down, he an play any role, that position flexibility is why he is valuable, + add Miller and you have a sick empty set, plus you can send El in motion and run it.

by Phantaskippy on Mar 9, 2010 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Everything ARE does, Wallace can do, except throw the ball. Wallace will not lose his job, ARE is just here to give us more depth and some special teams help. Last year we had a revolving door at the #4 WR spot.

I don't think Randle El was ever as fast as Wallace

Maybe quicker, but I don’t remember hearing Randle El running that fast of a 40.

seriously though

how does Sweed hurt us fighting for a #5 slot? Let him come in compete see if he can make the team, and throw him out there and let him get his feet wet – a screen pass or something.

Great picture on that link! Very appropriate. If you read down a few comments on that link, someone mentions that if you’re fast but can’t catch, turn them into a CB. How true. Sweed could be a tall Ike Taylor! Ha!

nice. Think of all the TEs and WRs we could have if we would just cut all the RBs…not to mention the cap room [sarcasm]. I say we make a play for TO too!!!
