he was my favorite Steeler. i played receiver in high school so i always like the receivers, Hines, cough Plax cough, Yancey, CJ, whatever, they were my favs, so naturally i was going to like Santonio. However, as a longtime fan and current Buckeye student, Santonio meant more to me, he was a Steeler and a Buckeye. i remember when he was drafted, then subsequently was arrested twice and my mom didn't want him, i told her, just wait, give him a chance, he's going to be a stud. well he was and it hurts to see him go, I'm still in shock to be quite honest. however, hes gone and our attention should shift to what happens next?
1st question: Do we draft a WR early in the draft?
Maybe. Golden Tate is a stud and us the reason some stupid team is going to draft Jimmy Clausen in the 1st round. Dude can play, and i would be ecstatic if we nabbed him in the 2nd round. if we draft Dez Bryant, i will murder someone. even without Sant, we have much more pressing needs (CB, FS, ILB, C, G, RB depth, to name a few), and to spend a first rounder or second rounder on WR (unless Tate slips) instead is dumb IMO. also, why replace a headcase who has proven that he is a legitimate top WR with another headcase who probably will never as good as the one he is replacing? Drafting Dez, as talented as he may end up being, would be an abject failure, just stick with Sant if that is the FO's plan. at least hes proven himself as a player. same goes for the morons calling for the signing of Brandon Marshall or TO, get a freaking grip, total lateral/backward move in both talent and character.
hopefully (but prob not that realistic) we can package some picks to nab Haden or Berry, or a solid interior O Liner then grab Tate in the 2nd. use the bonus picks we have to move up and take better players in a loaded draft class. because its not like our second (or i guess 3rd now) dayers ever pan out anyway.
2nd Question: what will the WR corps look like?
Hines and Wallace figure to be the starters, with Wallace basically taking the place of Santonio. El figures to battle (pun) Arnaz for the 3rd spot with Sweed possibly/hopefully getting the 4 (please?). throw in Tate and i like where we sit. Wallace has speed for days and is taller than Holmes, he could potentially be an upgrade if his blocking improves. he displayed enormous potential last year obviously. Hines is Hines, but Holmes took a lot of the pressure off, and basically freed him up one on one in the slot, or allowed Hines to roam the middle and find holes in the zone, it begs to be seen if Wallace can provide Hines with the same opportunities, or if Hines will provide these opportunities for Wallace. time will tell. El is going to be what he always was, a undersized quick guy who will rely on his speed and hope for mismatches, and Battle is 6'1'' 210, so he can hopefully add a more physical dimension to the WR group. I have no idea what to expect from Sweed, no clue, sorry.
personally i think the move hurts us in the short term (derrr), especially as we break Wallace in as a full time starter (i do think he will develop into an equivalent player), and Ben develops chemistry with Battle, Sweed and El. maybe we rely on the run more early (side note: Steeler football needs to be whatever gives a chance to win, i hate when people complain because we are throwing too much, even if it is winning games and is the only viable option because the running game is sub par, and vice versa. if you force your offense into one identity and use it because "its Steelers tradition" despite the personnel you posses then you are a retard. Steeler football is winning games, not pounding the ball, if pounding the ball wins games (early 70's, BUS years, 2004) whatever, pound the ball, if doing nothing all game then winning at the end works (2009) do that, i don't care about and "identity" i just want to win /rant.). but we will need a viable 2 back to spell Mendy (Moore? Tank? Redman? Draft?). this hurts because i loved Santonio, and will continue to support him, and it hurts because on the surface, and probably underneath we should have got much more from the trade, but that's why i wasted 20 mins on this stupid Fan Post and am not GMing an NFL team. idk, this situation certainly makes for a much more interesting draft, and much more important training camp/preseason to develop chemistry and familiarity. who knows what will happen but i certainly cant wait for the season to get here.
