What the Prospect Visits to the Steelers Tell Us

We’re all guessing about what the Steelers need and what they should do, but we can learn a lot from the positions and projected draft rounds of the 30 players the Steelers brought in. That tells me that in the first 4 rounds they will draft O-line, CB, WR, and OLB, with rounds 1 and 2 being in their best player available order, then to fill the remaining needs. They are not going to take McClain--didn’t bring him or any other ILB in (there is 1 later round OLB projected at ILB). They are not going to take Iupati--brought in 2 likely 7th rounders for visit.

Here’s a 4 round scenario based on the players who visited:

1 -- Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida (need position, only center brought in--I‘m not sure he’s a reach here like many are saying)

2 -- Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama.

3 -- Carlton Mitchel, WR, South Florida (I’d really prefer Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota, who should also be available here, but he didn’t visit--think he‘s a perfect fit and a steal)

4-- Navorro Bowman, OLB, Penn State, or Eric Norwood, OLB, South Carolina (might take Darrell Stuckey, FS, Kansas, here, since some later round OLB prospects were brought in but not at safety)

I’d be happy to see a better Steeler draft in these rounds -- especially at CB -- and hopefully the Steelers will use their two 5th, 6th, and/or 7th round non-compensatory picks to move up, but this is somewhat realistic and closer to what actually is going to happen, I think.
