Another Rothlisberger Post!

Ahem...here we go.

If you're tired of reading about Ben Rothlisberger, see ya.

The following is my case (Pure speculation) for Ben Rothlisberger being gone in the next few days. I know, you're thinking, "Why did he have to do a whole separate post instead of adding on to an earlier post?" Well, those of you who have read my writings know that I tend to be long winded. I didn't think that I should put something this big into someone else's blog.

If you read my recent post "Long Cold Off Season", you will be familiar with my stance, that I can't really judge Ben for his actions that I only think are those of a young guy with way too much money and not enough maturity. Of course, this all changes if he did, in fact, do the crime. This seems to be a little bit of a gray area. I don't know either way.

And, that's the problem, I have a doubt. The D.A. in Georgia did not say Ben was innocent, rather, he said he could not prove Ben guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt. In his conference, he stated that the young woman did in fact have bruises and a laceration in her genital area. What does this prove? Apparently nothing. I have a hard time believing that she fell and hit her baby-maker and did that kind of damage though. So, I have a doubt.

Either way, I read that the Rooneys are "Livid" about the negative press generated by last years situation, this one and Santanio's behavior. The Rooneys have been a standard for proper franchise ownership for far too long to see all they have worked for go POOF! because of one overly horny player, no matter who he is. Does anyone doubt that they are committed to their standards enough to let Ben go? I don't.

This is a little nit-picky (I know it's not a word), but, the guy everyone has been telling to show some maturity, the guy everyone has been hoping would get some maturity after this potentially life altering situation, shows up to his apology news conference sporting a mohawk! Take a long look at the do, and tell me that is not a mohawk. I just don't think he gets it. Let me ask you this: If you were going in front of a crowd of national reporters to do your apology, would you use cue cards? I think he would have looked a lot more heart-felt if he wasn't looking at the cards to remind him how to say he's sorry and going to try to be a better person, IMO.

We have begun calling Ben the face of the Steelers, but he's not, Hines is. Now, I see Hines' statements in the press last year questioning Ben's commitment in a whole new light. Now, I question the continuity of the locker room. I'm wondering if there is a rift there and if this will make it bigger.

It seems that at this time, if Ben was a real character guy, people would be coming out of the woodwork to defend him, they're not. I'm sure by now that you have seen Bradshaw's statements about Ben. This does not sit well. This statement, at this time, is designed for one purpose, to make Ben look bad, or to show his true character. It was not designed to reassure Steelers Nation that their franchise quarterback will respond positively to the preceding events.

Here's the part for wild speculation. I read that Rooney had voted for the overtime rules change "Reluctantly". That is not like the Rooneys to do something they are against. I think they made a deal with Goodell. I think that it was that if Ben was not charged, he would not be suspended, or not for long. Not to make sure that their franchise quarterback would be available to play for the Steelers, but so he would be available to play for the team they trade him to.

A lot of people think Ben is too valuable to be traded. Do you think he is more valuable than the reputation of the Steelers? You say he has brought two Super Bowl trophies to the 'Burgh. I say he has tarnished both of them. What is he worth now? Everybody who is not a Patriots fan, me for sure, think that the Patriots superbowls are tainted because of the cheating. Sure, this is a different kind of taint, but a taint just the same. Do you want to have to defend Ben's indefensible actions in a sports bar someplace to some idiotic Ravens fan, over this?

At first, I was all about rallying around Ben. I didn't want to see him go. I was worried about future wins, and possible championships. Today? I'm worried about the reputation of the Steelers. Is sitting Ben going to make enough of an impact on the man? Questionable. More importantly, does it make enough of an impact on the fans? Dig deep and ask yourself what you would think if William Gay was in this position. I would want him gone in a flash, as I did Santanio once I understood all the factors that went into that trade.

In conclusion, my opinion is that we will pay too high a price to retain Ben and possibly win another championship or two. And, that's the problem, championships should be earned, we should not have to pay for them. And make no mistake about it, if the Steelers retain Ben, they and Stelers nation will pay for it in credibility.

That is why I see Ben traded in the near future.

go back and reread the post gazette article about the rooney's "reluctantly" voting for OT

they “reluctantly” voted that way because they wanted the new system in both the playoffs and the regular season. it wasn’t enough change for them, but they felt it was better than nothing.

Decent argument, but drawing connections where there are none weakens it substantially.

I must admit that my idea of Ben as Teflon has disintegrated, but were we the Steelers to get into the habit of releasing guys with a cloud of doubt over them, I think that takes us down a somewhat difficult path. And by the way, I think Harrison’s was just as bad as this, and he is not gone. Ben will stay, but I am beginning to doubt more and more whether he can change. The onus is on him now, and the signs could not be clearer. We will trade Santonio, women (both conniving and non) will be paying you more attention, and you have lost the blind faith of the public. I think his next slip-up would be his last, but after all he is still quite young and obviously immature. At worst, he is guilty of forcing himself on women, nothing for which he ought be commended, but that is what it is. I do not see either rape or sexual assault as a possibility, rather, Ben seems to think that because he is Big Ben, therefore every woman would like to have sex with them. To be honest, a part of these women just might have, which is why even the lady in Georgia said that ‘he kinda raped me’, and that was one of her stronger accusations. Ben is no hero, that is for sure, but he does not seem to be a cancer in the locker room either, and that might be the difference between he and Santonio.

In short, the Rooneys stand by their principles, but having principles does not mean ostracizing anyone that causes you to doubt their character, nor preaching as a moral majority. Better would be to help Ben improve himself and become who we hoped he was before. Having said all that, we should reduce the likelihood of this happening in the future. I thus propose to you that we run the football more and limit any further brain damage that could not in any way help him make the right decision.

Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.

The Gazette wasn't my source...

Didn’t even see that article. I read the comment in a national post about the owners meeting. Just a quick blurb. AND, I did say “Wild speculation”. Wild speculation, by definition, is weak. If anyone looked to that section for any real substance…Whoops! It was really like “I wonder” out loud.

Great Post WYO

The Rooneys need to preserve the franchise and can recover alot of the lost goodwill from the BENTONIO episodes by trading their QB. The risk/reward on keeping Ben is way too high on the risk side of the ledger. Maximum trade value can be obtained RIGHT NOW while other teams are in a pre-draft trading mode, and must happen before the next episode occurs.

by Hanratty on Apr 13, 2010 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

Maximum trade value is not there. In fact, at best, Ben’s value is not even discussion-worthy. He is untouchable, though maybe two firsts (high firsts) and a second would get the talk started.

Right now, you could not get more than a late 2nd or early 3rd for him, draft or not.

Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.

I think you have the NFL equivalent of "Cabin Fever"

You’re killing me Hi5! You have some really good posts. Lately, you have made several comments about some subjects being over-played. We are not going to stop, nor should we. I specifically labeled this post so that you (And others) would know it was about Rothlisberger again, so you could choose not to read it if you were sick of it. Just sayin’.

The whole point of this site is for us to sound off about what’s on our mind, Steelers-wise. It’s hard to think of the Steelers at the moment and not think about Ben’s situation and how it is going to affect the franchise, both next season and down the road.

And many of us have a lingering fondness for Ben that makes us want to see him turn his life around. Because he isn’t doing himself any favors, whatever else is true about his extracurricular activities…

I said 6 months ago there was more to that locker room than we knew

What Hines said on that Sunday night interview was so interesting. It isn’t what he said so much is why he said it. Sounded to me like there is plenty in the locker room who don’t like him. Whether it’s that he is held to a different standard, he is too close to BA, etc. Now, to see people not defending him is telling. Go listen to Marvel Smith today on “movin the chains”. He all but said he isn’t liked. This is not good!

Great Post

This is the divide, isn’t it? I don’t think the BB crap is going away period. I prefer he get traded as well, however I’m not sure it’s going to happen this year.

Ben will have more chances than other players, simply because of his status as starting QB. I think he’s very close to the end of his rope however.

Good Grief

I will preface this with he should have been suspended if charged and traded if convicted. Neither of those happened after over a month of investigation. Is he a saint, no, did something happen between him and Miss Georgia, probably. Was it illegal, being that she can’t seem to make up her mind and that she followed him from bar to bar my guess is no. I do think he needs to clean it up and realize who he represents but that is about it. Please name another player who has been suspended or traded based on civilian accusations(this would mean not being arrested, even if no charges were filed). Tone has failed two drug tests and openly tweeted about smoking pot so I don’t see how the situations can be compared. I do think this has hurt our reputation but that will pass as long as he starts acting like a 28 year old instead of a 20 year old. I don’t understand that whole not earning their SB’s comment, pretty sure those were well earned as will be any future ones. I also really have a hard time believing the Goodell is doing under the table deals to get OT votes. Sorry, I can’t agree that this is a good post(although everyone has the right to their opinion) at least you didn’t say he won’t get suspended because he is white, there is one good thing. i will end on a positive.

Physically, the Super Bowls will be earned...

But a price will be paid for them in credibility. The concept has to do with the fact that the Steelers MAY be viewed as having compromised some of their ethics for the chance to win more championships – championships that are not by any means a sure thing. By loosing that credibility, by having the fans doubt the franchise, the Steelers and Steeler Nation is paying a heavy price for their POSSIBLE Super Bowls. That is what I mean when I say the Steelers will be paying for their Super Bowls.

by WyoFan on Apr 14, 2010 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

Comrpomising whose ethics?

Whatever the Steelers decide to do will be their ethics. We may or may not like whatever decision they reach, but their ethics may or may not match mine or yours, but it doesn’t mean they will have compromised their own ethics. What kills me is how people believe the Steelers should act in relation to THEIR OWN morals. Rather than leave it up to the Steelers to decide what is best for them as an organization. Some people seem to want to tar and feather BB, or ban him from the league forever. Yet others don’t believe BB should be suspended from any games at all. So whose ethical code do we follow? The guy who wants him banned for life? The guy who wants a 2 game suspension? The guy who thinks BB should be “likeable” because he’s an elite QB?

No matter what the organization does, someone’s gonna bitch about it. I say let them bitch.

I love being the most-hated guy here. I love beating them while [their fans] are flicking me off. --Hines Ward
