No Conviction Does Not Equal Inocence
I'm reading a lot of fans writing, or rebutting what others have written, with: Ben has never been charged or convicted of anything. True, but that does not mean that he is a good person. I submit to you: If you know the kid down the street is a drug dealer but he has never been arrested or convicted of anything, do you want your kids hanging around with him? What if you just think he is a drug dealer? Are you willing to take the chance?
I know, we don't KNOW Ben has done these things, but the evidence is mounting, although circumstantial. But doubt has been planted and it is serious. The doubt, in this case, is the multiple accusations. The question is: Should the Steelers take the chance? History suggest this may be unwise. We all thought the Tahoe scare would straighten Ben out, we thought wrong. Quite a few think this incident will straighten Ben out. What does history tell us?
It has been suggested that those of us who don't support Big Ben are not Steelers fans. Not true. We are Steelers fans in the truest sense of the word. We are concerned for the future and the reputation of the franchise. Ben is not the franchise, and at this point, he is severely damaging the image of the franchise.
Some say the fans have no right to suggest the Steelers behave in a certain moralistic way, or express disappointment at the way the situation has developed. I disagree. A lot of us were attracted to the Steelers when we were young by the wins, the players, and the championships. We were young, it was simple. Over the years, one of the things we became proud of was the strong moral compass the Steelers demonstrated. Was it perfect? No. Was it far better than most teams? Most definitely. We had a lot of fun pointing to the Bengals and guffawing. Now, others are pointing the finger at the Steelers. This hurts. Not because I'm not a true fan, but because I am, and I love the Steelers for all that they have given me over the years.
Those of you who think the the teams are not in this for the fans, you are wrong. The fans are the second half of football. Without the fans there is no football. Just look at the small market teams who are struggling financially who have small fan bases. We, the fans, pay for football, whether it's through the purchase of a jersey, season tickets, or by simply watching an add during the game. We, the fans, have the right to express our opinions and then support the direction of our team or not. I'm not suggesting jumping to another team, but I definitely will not be buying a Rothlisberger jersey. In this way, and through other channels (Such as here), the fans have every right to attempt to influence the direction of their team, and should. If enough people are on the same side of an opinion, chances are good that something will happen.
In the end, if you are writing something on BTSC, you are probably a Steelers fan. We all have different opinions, which is good. Please, lets attack the opinions, not the fans. The better your opinion is expressed, the better chance you have of swaying others to your point of view.
Go Steelers!

Well Said!
Kudos for a well-written article that expresses my feelings exactly. It is refreshing to see an article with good, concise points that actually makes sense. Good Job! GO STEELERS!
For the love of God, we are not putting together a church choir....
Davenport pooped in a girls closet! Every single team has players who are immoral. If every team let go of their immoral players we wouldn’t have enough men to field a rugby team….
No, not a choir...
But being accused of multiple sexual assaults, poor judgement, bad behavior, etc…Is a far cry from being even just regular. I would settle for regular.
people should not be punished or pilloried
on accusations. They should be punished on evidence and findings.
I cheer for Ben as a football player, not a moral authority.
And he is not a regular football player. Not by a long shot.
I'm all for having as many opinions shared as possible
because a good debate is something that allows people to know each other better, because it allows people to get to know each other better.

For all the opinions of extreme, one way or another, most of us sit somewhere in the middle. And I think it’s a safe statement to say, that most of us aren’t really sure what to think, and our gut and emotions are guiding us in one direction.

i dont know what i think anymore
both sides of the argument make sense, i want ben on the team, but he sure is attracting a lot of unwanted attention. im not sure i would be convinced by further accusations, as i dont find it unlikely that more sleazy women would take advantage of bens negative reputation. i do tend to disagree with the ‘choir boys’ argument, though. being immoral is one thing, but i do expect the players to not get into trouble with the law.

Reality Check; The Moral To The Movie Was
Nick Nolte to HC; “You’re right about one thing BA. There comes a time to put away childish things.”
Ben needs to learn that or he will not be a Pittsburgh Steeler much longer.
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
I already have my BB jersey and I will wear it. I think there’s way too much gray for me. The Las Vegas accusation in my mind was BS. The latest allegation was somewhat-bs, but not completely. Obviously BB acted badly, and should have known better given the Las Vegas accusation. Idiot! However, I do not think he’s guilty of a crime, other than stupidity, not growing up, not representing my franchise the way I’d like him to, etc.
From here going forward, he will be closely scrutinized. I hope he has learned his lesson and act like a responsible ADULT. College days are over and he needs to grow up.

Well
I for one can’t stand how superficial some fans are. As long as the players are performing well some fans will turn the other cheek no matter what and that’s total BS… Honestly, I dont believe that Ben raped the girl. I think the girl made some stupid decisions but Ben being the older person and KNOWINGLY in the spotlight w/ millions he ultimately is the dumb ass.
Just like the DA said he didnt do anything illegal but was very immoral. And from the Pitt locals it does seem like this guy doesn’t have a clue how to act when in public. A nice 3-4 game suspension would appease me.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
The Steelers aren't here to "appease" you
A 3-4 game suspension for unfounded rumors is a bit absurd, isn’t it? I’ll tell you what, let’s just suspend the entire team for 16 games and start Steely McBeam.
No but Roger Goodell is .. And so are the Rooneys seeing as they said their will be punishment.
And its not an unfounded rumor, unless you’re stupid as hell. The Rooneys wouldn’t be pissed if it was just an unfounded rumor nor would the DA say Roethlisberger was involved in some immoral shit. The only reason why it wasn’t pursued is because they evidence wasn’t Youre probably one of those superficial fans aren’t you?
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
If by superficial...
..you mean someone who has watched all 6 Super Bowl games while they were being broadcast, has followed the team yearly, has the NFL package just to watch them and has oodles of Steelers stuff in his house, then yes, I am a superficial fan.
Im glad you're diehard

dude, you have michael vick ffs
And don’t start with “he paid his debt to society”, by the same logic, Ben “has no debt to society”. The question is whether you set your teams standard higher than the justice system. To me the answer is surely yes, and the Steelers should suspend Ben for Steelers’ sake. That would both show the values of the franchise, and be a warning sign for Big dummy.
Hearing it from an Eagles fan though, that’s large.

The Steelers aren’t here to “appease” you
you’re right. they make money because we buy tickets to watch their team play, watch on tv (money through advertising/tv contracts), or we buy their memoriblia.
oh wait…if ppl choose to no longer do that because they’re upset for whatever reason, they won’t make money any more….
As I’m sure you are fully aware, there is a full range of ‘legal’ behavior, all the way from self-sacrificial to almost-but-not-quite-antisocial-enough-to-get-your-ass-put-in-the-slammer. Legal and moral behavior may be but aren’t necessarily equivalent. And there was in fact ‘illegal’ behavior referenced in this incident, everything from buying drinks for underage patrons (which isn’t under dispute) to public exposure (which is alleged by one of the witnesses but unconfirmed.)
I don’t propose throwing Ben under the bus – I hope that the Steelers get him the help he needs to become a better teammate and representative of both the team and the NFL. But just because he managed to evade prosecution doesn’t necessarily mean that his behavior was either commendable or entirely ‘legal,’ much less ‘moral.’
As I recall you continually said that Santonio was “Teflon man,” right up until the Steelers traded him to the Jets for a six-pack of Pearl Light. Take the blinders off.

Rooney's have too much invested
To let this guy dirty the teams image. The Rooney’s classiness is precisely why they won’t take crap from BB. They have a pretty damn good idea what went down in Georgia, and that is why they will take a hard line here.
" Just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, and then I think you'll finally understand"
" In America" Charlie Daniels Band
So the Rooney's know what happened in GA...
…but the DA didn’t?
Ya know, if intercourse happened, there would be DNA EVIDENCE. How is it that everyone somehow believes that there was sex, yet there wasn’t any DNA hours after? Our President got busted on DNA on a dress from weeks before but somehow Ben’s DNA magically vanishes? How is it that the hospital workers couldn’t even determine if there was any sexual assault either? How is it that the girl can’t remember if she had sex 30 minutes later, but then somehow figures it out when she sobers up?
Frankly, this “case” is a sham. What we have now is just a good ole’ fashioned witch hunt.
“So Ben, when did you stop beating your wife?”
A sham?
A doctor who examined her at a nearby emergency room discovered a cut, bruises and vaginal bleeding but could not say if she was raped. And while some DNA was found, there was not enough to determine whom it belonged to, Bright said.
As the night wore on, the student walked down a dingy hallway to a small bathroom, and Roethlisberger soon followed.
And if she was so overly intoxicated, then Ben should’ve been smart enough not to try and hook up with her. You act as if nothing happened.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
Do you know for a fact that Ben tried to hook up with her? Even that is a matter of conjecture at this point.
If intercourse happened, there would be DNA evidence galore. There wasn’t enough to even test. If a sexual assault happened, it should be fairly easy to tell…yet hospital workers couldn’t make that determination. And though they found perhaps something, they couldn’t tell when or how it was done on a sexually active female. How is it that she can’t remember if she had sex 30 minutes ago, but somehow realizes it hours later? At this point, there’s no physical evidence at all that can corroborate her non-drunk account.
How is it that all the law-and-order types don’t believe the two cops who didn’t see anything and were part of Ben’s entourage that night? How is it that we’d believe a statement that said Ben was making crude sexual remarks all night yet omits her own sexual comments, including wearing something with the initials “DTF” which stands for Down to F***? How is it that, by all accounts, every member of that party, including Big Ben, were reacted totally “stunned” by the accusation? How is it that the wildly inconsistent statements by her friends (including one that said the bodyguard physically dragged the girl into the bathroom) aren’t being pointed out?
Did something happen in that bathroom? Who the heck knows? Did it happen the way the supposed victim described? Looking at the physical evidence, that’s highly unlikely. From the physical evidence, there’s a better chance that it happened the way Ben described the incident. That’s probably unlikely too in the grand scheme of things. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle – a drunken, unfulfilled, semi-sexual encounter between two 20-somethings. Big deal.
As I said, at this point it’s a witch hunt. And it’s going to come back to bite the NFL in the ass, because some fan is going to figure out that if they can get the opposing star player in any kind of semi-compromising situation (even one that is ultimately fictitious), there’s a chance that player will be raked over the coals and suspended, giving the fan’s team a better chance at winning.
At this point, if the Steelers are going to allow Ben to continue to be raked over the coals, I’d rather they just up and trade him. At least he’d get a fresh start and the team wouldn’t have the distraction anymore. But if they continue to let the face of the franchise twist in the wind for any extended period of time, then they’ll deserve the horrendous season that they’ll get.
when he bought them a round of shots, invited them back to the VIP
then they admitted had sexual contact (both ben and girl admitted this) what do you think he was trying to do? Play go fish?

and you’re basing that on…..? maybe there was he didn’t “finish.” that would certainly cut back on DNA evidence left behind. and how exactly did male DNA get there then if there was no sexual activity?
-maybe she was experiencing a “brown out” or even black out.
-because those off-duty cops would then be admitting they were involved and played the role of bouncer to allow rape to happen. that’s a good reason to lie (IF they were lying).
again, there is a difference between being guilty of a crime and doing things that aren’t morally acceptable to most.

are you really suggesting that the league should suspend every player who tried to hook up with an intoxicated woman?
Perhaps we can find some replacements in Pop Warner ball.

Not what I suggested @ all
I just made it clear that he should’ve been more responsible. If you were worth 100 million would you try and hook up with neaer blacked out chicks? Steelers fans may be dumber than I originally thought if so.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
I'll tell you when I am worth 100 mill.
But personally I could care less if Ben tries to hook up with intoxicated women in bars. I must have missed the part where you give up the right to act like a normal 28 year old because you are a success at football.
But I really should consider the source.
you love to sound like you know what you are talking about so let me ask you
what is the legal definition of rape? Is it intercourse where DNA is present? or is it the penetration however slight, without consent?
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face
the attending physician could not conclude there was a rape based on the physical
evidence and actually conducting the examination. Is there some reason we should doubt his conclusions?
that is completely false.
Ben DID deny rape. legally documented with the police. this is the most INSANE jump to conclusion ive ever seen.
ben didnt deny the rape? LMAO.
If he didnt he would have been charged. FYI
He just didnt set up a press conference and hold your hand telling you such. That gets said to the police in private by bens attorney.

hi5 learn how to read
i didnt say ben didnt deny he committed rape. i said the DOCTOR didnt deny that rape could have occurred based his finding in the physical exam. notice how the last person referred to before the pronoun he was used was doctor?
a lot of ppl have been throwing out the “the doctor couldnt prove rape happened so why should we should believe him?” but ppl are failing to realize the doctor didnt deny rape happened either.
basic logic and reasoning
usually requires the person asserting a point to prove it. If you say Ben raped the girl, you need to prove it.
If you are suggesting that someone has to prove a negative, you are playing a loaded game.
i'm tired of ppl like you twisting my words around with this stuff
physician not being able to prove rape occurred doesnt equal the physician proved no rape occurred. i never once said on here that i think rape happened. i’ve said what ben did was immoral but probably not illegal.
you’re the one playing a loaded game. you arent even up to your own standards of some twisted “logic” because you can’t PROVE the doctor decided sex didnt occur. especially since he said he didnt have the finding.

Um
“We had a lot of fun pointing to the Bengals and guffawing”
You realize they won the division and beat us twice last season with their team of “criminals”. Maybe we should just get MORE guys with questionable character flaws so that Ben won’t be the center of attention.
I find it coincidental that punishment will be handed a week after the draft. If that doesn’t say Ben is getting traded, I don’t know what does.
it doesn't say BB is getting traded
it ways the league would rather have more media attention on the draft than on BB for the next couple of weeks or so
Wyo, I agree that no conviction doesn’t = innocent. On the other hand, no charges after a month of investigation and a “victim” who can’t keep her story straight points towards innocent a lot more than it does towards guilty. I think most believe something happened but also that it wasn’t illegal. Should our QB be having sex( or whatever) in a bathroom with a drunk college girl, certainly not. That makes him self absorbed and not very bright but not a criminal. It is the one sided coverage of this that is turning the tide from pissed off to support for Ben. Even the NFL network coverage seems to take all the negative comments from the police report as fact but rarely mentions the inconsistencies in the story. As long as this continues, you will see support for Ben increase as people just get sick of hearing about it. I personally believe the trade rumor was leaked intentionally to gauge how Steeler Nation feels. That too is starting to bring more support to Ben’s corner. The longer the one sided coverage goes on the greater his support will grow because people are just plain sick of it. By the time his suspension ends, most will be more than ready for his return. Just MHO
its sad how quick you all are to judge
because in fact, no conviction does equal innocence. ever heard of the term “innocent until proven guilty” ??
i really try not to be confrontational on these blogs and stuff but this sort of talk really pisses me off. get off your high horse its not like you havent ever done something dumb. the only facts of the situation we know are that he was drunk at a bar and had sex with a woman. neither of which are illegal
by steel.curtain.number2 on Apr 17, 2010 11:36 AM EDT reply actions
"no conviction does equal innocene"
The phrase “innocent until proven guilty” is a legal concept. It doesn’t mean that someone who has been acquitted or not charged didn’t commit the crime. That’s ridiculous, are you saying that everyone who has ever committed a crime has been convicted for it?
the only facts of the situation we know are that he was drunk at a bar and had sex with a woman. neither of which are illegal
Having sex in a bar bathroom is illegal.
Serious business.
Actually
We do not know he even had sex with her. A false report came out that Ben had sex with her. According to the DA, Ben never admitted to this. Looking at the witness’s accounts it is difficult to put Ben in the bathroom alone with the girl – outside of drunk witness who constantly contradict themselves and/or were not nearby. Furthermore, all they needed for DNA tests was 1 billionth of a gram. Guess what? Wasn’t there. The girl’s SECOND story claims Ben had sex with her while she was on a toilet. Ben is 6’5", she is 5’. The physics of that seem impossible.
The physical evidence does not agree with this woman.
Her and her friends accounts constantly contradict this women’s story.
Other biased and unbiased witnesses do not agree with this woman.
The officer on the scene discounted this woman’s story.
So the physical evidence, the witnesses, and the girl’s varying accounts all point to no illegal activity and actually question whether they had sex. Yet you all are willing to crucify a guy over an allegation? Or should I say allegations since they can’t get their stories right. Please, think about this for awhile, ask why the DA could not pursue charges. That is because Ben did not commit rape.
I don't think anyone is claiming they have never done anything dumb
just that most rational people realize that with a $102 M contract that you will be held to a higher standard than most. Additionally, this is not an isolated incident with Ben but the third major off field issue in the past five years. I also might add that Ben was, in fact, likely guilty of multiple minor offenses such as public nudity, public intoxication and supplying alcohol to a minor which he was not charged with.
opinions vs.facts
Again; this is all conjectered bullshit!! I dont care two shits about someones morallity; if you arent charged, proven guilty, and punished, then you must be innocent. Now I dont give a damn about levels of innocence or issues of morality, the bottom line goes back to the fact that Ben Rothelisberger has never been convicted of a crime. All I care about is what he does on the field, and thats it, nothing more.I have never in 43 years of absolute fealty to all things Steeler looked for moral guidance from football players.
Very wise
I have never in 43 years of absolute fealty to all things Steeler looked for moral guidance from football players.
But that doesn’t mean that players’ off-field behavior can’t affect the team’s on-field performance. It may or may not, in this case. But all morality aside, Ben is for better or worse a leader of the team. Heck, he’s paid almost five times as much as the head coach. However you may feel about it, it is clear that the Steelers ownership views him as having let them down.

The PG had an oline article about the euphoria the team is feeling right now. I know it’s early, but it’s nice to have a positive feeling about the Pirates atm. My whole feeling on the Ben issue is
I just want it to be over. It’s been talked about to death. I think he’s pretty much a cad when it comes to women (and not a Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind kind of cad, more like a Quagmire kind of cad), but he is one hell of a QB. I think I’d be fine either way with keeping him or trading him as long as they get major value.
Everyone gets ‘gut’ feelings about events like this, one way or another. My gut feeling is that he probably took advantage of a drunk woman, which is pathetic and wrong. But the basic fact is that none of us will ever know the truth. So why assume he is guilty of rape? Would I leave him in a room alone with my 19 year old neice? Hell no. Do I think they should dump him? Nope on that one either.
But I’ll restate what I posted once earlier when this all first broke. Ben is not an ordinary 29 year old man. You guys can claim that he has a right to go out and party and hook up all he wants. Unfortunately, you are grossly mistaken. Ben is not an ordinary guy. He’s a guy who’s worth 100+ million dollars, and as such needs to act accordingly. That’s not my opinion coming out, that’s the League’s and the Rooneys’. And that’s where all of Ben’s backers on this page seem to miss the point.
Ben is a huge investment for the Rooneys and if they feel that he has damaged their reputation, and I challenge anyone on here to prove otherwise, they have every right to terminate his employment with them. The League clearly states that conduct unbecoming the image they want put forth is a suspendable offense. He will be suspended, my guess is 6 games with the ability to whittle that down with counseling, service, whatever a la Michael Vick’s case.
Dissapointment.
Ben here’s the situation, it’s 3rd and 25, there’s 53 seconds to go in the fourth, you’re down by 5 points, and have no timeouts left. You’re on their 43 yard line, there are 3 defensive players who have broken through the line, and the coverage is so tight that air molecules cannot get through. Punting will just cause the other team to grind it out on the ground. And Hines Ward is out with a groin pull (ouch!). Sounds pretty hopeless, but, you’ve pulled some Houdinis in the past few years that have led everyone to belive you can still pull this off. Funny thing though, on first down, Wallace was wide open down the right sideline and you threw it at Willie in the flat with 3 guys hanging on him, on second down, Sweed got open in the seam and had a possible touchdown, and you hung on to the ball, just to get to third down and the situation described above. That’s nonsense, right? You wouldn’t do that, taking your team to the edge of loosing a game just to look like a hero would you? I don’t think you would do that intentionally, sometimes that 3rd down situation does happen, and that’s the nature of the beast with this game we all love. And you wouldn’t put your team at risk buy doing something like that to stroke your ego. WE ALL KNOW BETTER THAN THAT! So, the question is, why do this to yourself, your family, and your team, and your friends, and your fans by putting yourself in THAT situation outside football? I know that your personal life should be kept private, but your under a microscope, ALL THE TIME. Don’t make the Rooneys have to punt, it’s third down bub.
Powderkeg.
Ben screwed up (and down and in and out and all around by some points of veiw here), he knows it. Did you see how he acted during his press statement? That’s a kid who knows he made the mistake of being in the WRONG place at the WRONG time. You would think that he had learned a lesson about being around women and alcohol is not a good place for him to be, just like riding a motorcyle without a helmet. So, maybe he’s a little dense and needs hit with a 2×4 to the face to learn (see head through windshield). I guess now Ben will take a vow of celibacy, and start going to church instead of the bar, and maybe someday get married and stop being a 20 someting guy, who is after all just human like the rest of us." Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
nice article
thanks
