BTSC 2010 Community Mock Draft - Pick #17 by the San Francisco 49ers: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
My apologies to for not noticing that he had mentioned up front that he wouldn't be able to do the second of San Francisco's two first round picks. Despite being on the road, he was still kind enough to give me a selection at #17. That means the Pittsburgh Steelers are up at #18. I've handed off the 'honor' of selecting for the Steelers to EnglishSteelerGotBanned, who apparently had his submission at #15 lost somewhere in the cloud. Perhaps my fault, so it's all his if he can get to the pick in a timely manner while also doing a solid job with it. If he's available and reading this, I'm confident he'll do just that.
I'm short of time to do any sort of research and writeup on this kid, so I'll open it up to you all to collectively piece together some analysis and/or opinions on the imposing pass rushing defensive end out of South Florida and where he most likely will end up in a week's time. -Michael Bean -

DE
It’s so hard to draft this position around this spot, it seems.
Let’s look at the DEs taken with first-round over the last few years (DEs drafted to be hand-on-the-ground 4-3 DEs, not OLBs or 3-4 DEs):
Tyson Jackson (Kansas City)
Aaron Maybin (Buffalo)
Robert Ayers (Denver)
Chris Long (St. Louis)
Vernon Gholston (NY Jets)
Derrick Harvey (Jacksonville)
Lawrence Jackson (Seattle)
Gaines Adams (Arizona)
Jamaal Anderson (Atlanta)
Adam Carriker (St. Louis)
Jarvis Moss (Denver)
Mario Williams (Houston)
Tamba Hali (Kansas City)
Mathias Kiwanuka (NY Giants)
With the exception of Mario Williams, which of the guys taken who are in years 3+ would a team NOT trade for their original pick right now? If Pierre-Paul is any different than most of these guys, I’m happy to say I’m wrong, but it seems more likely San Francisco would get a Jarvis Moss/Derrick Harvey/Jamaal Anderson clone than a legitimate high-end pass rusher.
Wasn’t Tyson Jackson drafted to be a 3-4 DE in KC and weren’t Ayers and Gholston both drafted to be OLBs from the start?
Nonetheless, I think your point still stands though. 4-3 DE could arguably be the hardest position to evaluate coming out of college.
