Georgia Bureau of Investigation Report Brings To Light Another Claim
It's cliche to suggest the Steelers' brass are waiting to see if there is a final nail to QB Ben Roethlisberger's coffin.
If the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's report of another incident involving Roethlisberger is further investigated by the league or the Steelers, it could mean ramped up efforts to part ways with the team's marquee player.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday morning that a separate allegation of sexual misconduct by Roethlisberger exists, but the alleged victim's father advised her not to press charges.
According to the documents obtained by the AJC through Georgia's open records laws, the allegation stated Roethlisberger dropped his pants and told the woman she "could do whatever she wants."
The report further states Roethlisberger invited her to a party at his house a week later, where he allegedly put his hand up her skirt. The victim fled the house after that.
On one hand, the fact this information came out in the report may simply be the whole ordeal is running its course. Odds are, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asked Ben and his lawyers if the allegation of sexual assault at the Milledgeville night club was the only act of impropriety he should be aware of. Perhaps both Goodell and Art Rooney II know of this allegation already.
If not?
It's difficult to suggest any other nail-in-coffin, or straw breaking the camel's back cliche is appropriate, but for Ben's sake, let's hope he was at least up front about it with his boss and the commissioner. He's already facing a suspension, but further evidence of this deviant behavior going public is likely to lengthen that, possibly for a year.
Goodell has taken a hard stance on repeat offenses, and this allegation, coupled with the two others, seems to fit in line with a harder stance than just two games.
While former Steelers WR Santonio Holmes' trade market disinegrated due to the fact he'll be out at least a quarter of the 2010 season, and he's a free agent after that, Roethlisberger's trade value would fall through the floor. He's due in exess of $90 million on his contract, and the negative attention (to put it mildly) he's receiving make it difficult for even a QB-starved franchise to give up much for him.
That would essentially cement Roethlisberger where he is, but the message the Steelers would be sending changes the entire franchise: Ben isn't on the roster because we want him, it's because we can't get rid of him.

Doesn't it make you wonder
Why these two reports were made public <after the DA’s statement of not pressing charges? You would think if there were some merit to any of the others we would have heard of it in the month long + investigation? It’s not like it wasn’t in the news, and the GA DA would have been privy to this information, no?
It’s beyond rediculous at this point. It’s apparent the guy has a serious problem.

Wait...wait...wait
I am supposed to believe this? This is the account:
Ben drops his pants exposing Little Ben, “Yo baby, you can do whatever you want”
Girl, “Ew no thanks!”
Ben, “Do you wan to come to a party with me in a week after I just exposed myself to you?”
Girl, “YEAH! Definitely! You seem like the type of person I want to hang out with again. Especially at your place of residence where I will know no one.”
Uhhh…yeah, BS!
The future is not what it used to be.
And then her FATHER, of all people, tells his “sexually harassed” daughter to not press charges?
The future is not what it used to be.

Lot of assumptions in there…if anything, I’ll quietly point out that no mention was made of what the alleged victim did when he dropped his drawers…I only mention it cuz the allegation says she went to the party. Doesn’t seem likely she would have gone if she was that disgusted by it. However, dropping his pants like a bleeping idiot in front of a woman is not the same as grabbing her.
by Neal Coolong on Apr 16, 2010 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions
Of course I added the dialogue to make it humorous, but the chronology is still there and makes absolutely no sense.
She went to a party at a guys house a week after he allegedly exposed himself to her and said she could do whatever she wanted. Yeah…I do not buy that for a second.
The future is not what it used to be.
by John Stephens on Apr 16, 2010 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions
It's also out of context a bit.....
What was she doing and where were they when he dropped his pants?
Hotel room? his room? her room? Back of a bar?
Also were they flirting mutually with each other when this happened? Or are we to believe she was just standing there having a drink and BBR walked over?
End of the day – my concern is that BBR is in these situations, I don’t necessarily believe he did or didn’t do anything, it’s more that his in situations like this where accusations can be made and never full rebuffed.
In any account
If someone drops their pants and says “do what you want”. And you did not want that, so you did nothing. Why in the world would you hang out with that person again? It makes 0 sense.
The future is not what it used to be.
by John Stephens on Apr 16, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions
She would go back for a couple of possible reasons
1.) Because he’s a rich celebrity, with presumably a big house, free booze, lots of people, etc…going to a party there is a status thing.
2). Becuase she’s probably young, and with her friends. I seriously doubt that she went by herself, which would make her feel more comfortable about going back there…as bad of an idea as it may have been.
3.) The initial “exposing” could have been made in a non-threatening way…I of course am not condoning it in any way…but, he was drunk, even though it’s a pathetic move, he could’ve been joking around…and maybe they weren’t alone in the room when it happened…still is a dumbass thing to do though…
So, she went back there a second time probably because she didn’t feel threatened by him the first time.
I don’t know…just some possiblities.

Of course, you’ve misrepresented what happened. For one thing, she never filed a complaint. The police heard about it from a friend of her brother, and then tried to interview her. She refused the interview. All of the stories make it clear that she has never provided any information at all about the incident. No one has her side of the chronology or events, except third hand. Every single thing you guys are saying is raw speculation. You not only don’t know what happened, you don’t even know her version of what happened.

Day late & a dollar short!!
NOW it starts to come out! Still say BB got a free ride from the media on this!! Kobe’s INTERVEIW INSIDE the police station was public knowledge 2 days after the accusations!(Remember he & Shaq fallin’ out because of it?)
Minimum suspension should be 4 games, max 8!! Or else this is all just lip service from Goddell/Rooney’s!!!
"You never stand so tall as to when you reach down to pick someone up."
Kobe and Shaq had problems before that. And Kobe’s accuser went to the cops one day after the alleged assault. Ben’s accuser made a statement that morning, but was pretty drunk, based on what the reports indicate.
Different situations. As far as the lip service accusation, Rooney has already said he’ll be suspended, but they are going to do it along with the NFL.

a free ride?
Literally every news report only discusses the McNulty case as a pretext for the GA case. But the reality is that the two cases are nothing alike and don’t display a pattern of anything. But as far as the media concerned it’s “now accused twice in the last year…” without adding any CONTEXT whatsoever to the McNulty case. What’s the context?
1) NO CRIMINAL CHARGES
2) McNulty already had a boyfriend, essentially based on the fact that he looked like Ben.
3) Her emails contradict her entire case
4) Her co-workers have disavowed her
That, my friends, is the essence of defamation & gold-digging. And nary a word of it mentioned in any report I’ve read. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be mentioned, I’m saying that to mention it is disingenuous because it’s essentially always being used to push the “pattern” narrative. And to look at the two cases side by side, they’re nothing alike. So no wonder Ben’s losing this one in the court of popular opinion.
He’s still a spoiled, stupid child, though.

The most disturbing part for me is that it appears that BBen does’nt see his behavior as a problem. Of course until it was pointed out by the league and Rooney’s.

this is so dumb, but now I think we're screwed.
1) in a way Ben’s reaping the “rewards” of being not well-liked in the sports media. So now they’re piling on… there’s blood in the water and they smell a frenzy. Colin Cowherd essentially admitted this on the air the other day.
2) As much as I hate to admit it, the Steelers have built a clean, blue collar reputation but in the process the franchise and some of its fans have crossed over into sanctimony. And now here’s the fallout. We love our team, but over the last decade I fear we’ve allowed ourselves to adopt a holier than thou attitude, and it’s definitely hurting us in this situation. Fans of other teams, tired of hearing us wax poetic about “the Steeler Way” are really loving this. Especially Cowboys fans, which is not only ironic, it’s downright hypocritical – fans of “America’s Team™” essentially invented sanctimony in NFL fandom circles.
3) Also as much as I hate to admit it, we may be best getting rid of him now. The die is cast on Ben, and if there’s a no tolerance policy towards him, I think it’s far too easy now for anyone just to throw out another allegation with the goal of damaging Ben and (more to the point) the Steelers. I could see some homer for another team paying someone to do it. We’re basically at the tipping point it’s beginning to seem.

I'm afraid you might be correct
All it takes are accusations. No facts, no proof, nothing. Now these stories coming out about Ben’s bodyguards dragging the girl to the bathroom and then Ben following. Then the bodyguards blocking the door is just crazy to me. I mean this is the story from the girl who was .20 BAC drunk the previous night and this crap is being reported like its fact. Personally I’ve never been .20 drunk, I’ve never been much of a drinker at all. I’ve never been .05. So I don’t know how the memory thing works. All I know is that I’ve had friends tell me they’ve been so drunk and don’t remember driving home that night. They don’t know how they got home just know that they were there and their car was there. I wouldn’t believe anything they said and it would be dangerous to do so. Especially if their claiming someone raped them. There is so much irresponsible journalism going on that is not even worth fighting it. People believe the news. They think its facts, they don’t think just take it for as it is. I would hope that ben wins his defamation suit and if he is traded or cut, he files a similar one against all the broadcast companies.

The media aren't reporting that Ben raped anyone...
They’re reporting that he is/was being investigated for sexual assault because someone is accusing him of it.
People responding to the media’s reports are the irresponsible parties, in my opinion. I didn’t write here that Ben raped anyone. I wrote that he’s being accused of it. Two completely different topics, and the fact that he’s being accused of it is news, whether we like it or not.
I think you’re making a valid point as far as how people are taking it, but I haven’t seen any report made by a credible news outlet that I’d label as “irresponsible.”
Point one out, I’d love to write a piece on it.

its just my opinion. But all of the reports have been based on rumors, and accusations. No one has been brave enough to question why should we believe anything a .20 BAC girl says. After she changed her story twice. People are taking it wrong because that is how it’s being reported in my opinion. The word it so its easy to for people to say, oh this is how it went down. Especially when they reported on the story of the girl who was so plastered that she couldn’t remember much of anything. So now people take what she said as fact when she doesn’t even know if its fact or not. To me you might as well have just said Ben raped her.

Here's one example
Link
I think this is a typical article in the media in that it reports something while sourcing it, but what is the real point? I saw a similar article a few days ago that said “Roethlisberger accuser says she said no.” Well, of course she says she said no, that’s why she reported it to begin with. Does that add any real new info? No, it just exploits a big story to get internet clicks. Yes, it is sourced, but it really doesn’t add anything as far as real evidence. It does, however, further tarnish Ben to the extent that all of these rumors and reports imply that he actually did something. What I mean by that is that they first tell the story of some accusation, which gets you thinking along those lines. It’s important to remember that none of the accusations against Ben have been proven in any conclusive way.

Agreed with the premise, but if the Steelers have been guilty of being holier than thou, would that not put a bit of a burden on the circumstance in addition to Ben, and would it no be excessively holier than thou to then dump him because he is being accused left and right?
Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.
Yes but trading him now will only makes things worse as far as I see it. You would be taking the moral high-ground again. Taking the fallout from this seems a good way of distancing yourself from the sanctimony. Having an obnoxious horrible person on the team is in my opinion still better than having a convicted one for example.
I don't see it that way
it’s no longer a moral question, it’s a question of Ben’s value to the organization. How will he play from here on out? I don’t think we can assume that Ben will be the same player under continued pressure and demonization from the media, and the fans (away AND home). Hell, he might respond by focusing everything on his field performance, and putting up a monster season. Or he could fade, because he’s no longer Steeler Golden Boy II. That has to be part of the discussion now.
by steely mcballs on Apr 16, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes if it affects his work performance then of course trade him by all means.
But at this moment it makes 0 buisness/sport sense he is coming from the best 2 seasons of his carrer. I’m not saying the reasons you gave are not valid ones because they are. But any move the organisation makes on him right now will be seen as a moral judgment on his behaviour.
Personally I have a big problem with harsher sanctions than a couple of games susspension because as much as I don’t like the type of personality the accussations suggest he is still one of the best at his profession. Heck a there’s a lot of music i like that was made by people who were drug addicts or worse but I’ve learned to keep the love for the craft they do separate from the persons that they are.

Yes, where there's smoke there's fire
Just what Tomlin said about Spygate. I’m not willing to give Ben the benefit of the doubt anymore. The McNulty case is one thing; but all these others add up to a pattern of behavior, even if only half of the claims in each case are true.
+1
We can pick all of these situations apart, line by line, and find things that may not mesh up as well as Ben Haters would like to accept. At the same time, it’s extremely difficult for me to accept that this is all one gigantic conspiracy, started and currently worked by a bunch of people who have no relationship to each other, to the NFL or to Ben Roethlisberger.
That’s not fact, just my opinion. I agree with Coach Tomlin, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

i guess everywhere there is someone wanting to jump on some kind of bandwagon.
I guess my first question would be, especially if i am her father, If he TRULY did that, why in the hell would you go back to his house?(I know someone already mentioned that question) Why in the last two “accusations” the “alleged victim” did not make the report on their own, they had to be convinced to. I am a counselor so i understand the reasoning behind that when someone is raped, but these 2 are not as traumatic as rape. i can’t recall anyone being diagnosed with PTSD after someone flashed them. Could happen, anything is possible
Things can always be worse....
It's just like Tiger Woods, folks -
batten down the hatches and prepare for a ton of these allegations. Anybody can say anything at this point and the media will grab it and most people will believe it. We’ll probably never know much of anything for sure, except for the obvious fact that Ben has done a lot of really stupid and antisocial (and possibly worse than antisocial) stuff. Sooner or later everyone in America who has ever been in the same county with him and wants to make a few waves will have told their story (or the story about something that happened to ‘their friend,’) and the press will move on to the next big sensation.
In the meantime, we’re left with a neutered quarterback, an embarrassed franchise and team, and a lot of unwanted #7 jerseys. We might just as well get used to it, because as someone stated above nobody is going to want him.
The question is, do we close ranks, get him some help, and support him as a person and as our quarterback, or do we continue to pass this stuff along? I for one am sick of it, and I support seeing that he gets the help he needs to not only see that his behavior is unacceptable but to help him change it. Then we have to be prepared to support the better person he hopefully will become.
Everyone screws up, and Americans love redemption stories. Let’s hope that Ben’s can be one of those, and not the other sort, where he refuses to acknowledge anything except that people are ‘down on him’ and continues to behave however he likes, thus ensuring him a rapid exit from the NFL. Because how much or little truth there is in the individual stories, Ben as he has been revealed in recent months isn’t a very likable person when dealing with the unwashed masses. Your character shows not by how you behave when you think people that ‘matter’ are looking, but when they aren’t.

Definitely not looking to condemn him.
But I’m not going to be his apologist, either.
I have a beard, and yes, it does make me look lumberjackish. But that doesn’t make me one. But if multiple sources claimed that to have seen me cutting timber, with a sampling of wood dust left behind (yet not enough to confirm the source of said dust), then it is still possible.

Wood dust would be his DNA. And there was none.
Also, the sources who claimed you were cutting timber are drunk. One time when I was drunk I thought I saw Cameron Diaz. It ended up being a less attractive, taller woman, with Blonde hair. I coulda swore at the time though…

in the DA’s statement it says there was no “wood dust” but other kinds of male DNA:
“A standard rape evidence kit was collected. The doctor found no evidence of semen or discharge. The swabbings from the rape-evidence kit were tested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta, Georgia, and the initial testing found human male DNA present. Additional extensive testing was done, but because the sample was so minute it would not yield a profile. The crime lab advised that extracting DNA from Mr. Roethlisberger at this point was futile due to the fact that no profile was available from the minute male DNA sample submitted in the rape-evidence kit. Hence, that is when Mr. Roethlisberger’s attorney was informed that no buccal-swab samples for DNA would be needed from his client anymore.”

Some people are good at public manipulation, sorry, speaking, and some aren’t. Not being a politician, he hasn’t learned the art of projecting the proper emotion. Under the circumstances, it’s pretty hard to say whether or not he was sorry. Art II said he was ‘properly contrite’ and I have to assume that he meant it.

Totally disagree
What Tiger did was consensual. His affairs were non criminal and in reality he is answerable only to his wife and he is going to pay out a probable half a billion dollars in his divorce settlement. Do I condone his actions? NO!
What Ben did, and though there is not enough evidence to criminally convict there is enough to pretty well establish his status as a sexual predator, was to force himself onto unwilling, naive and intoxicated young women. Just the pretty well established and admitted act of exposing himself is criminal. Taking a girl into a bathroom and having bodyguards block the door and keeping her friends from being able to come to help her is enough for me.
At first I thought a couple of games suspension was appropriate but the more I read the more I think it should be more – much more. IMO Ben isn’t sorry he did it. He is sorry he got caught. If Ben’s actions weren’t exposed here who would his next victim be – your daughter – your sister.
Yes I do believe in redemption but only after retribution. It will take a lot more than showing up in a press conference, shuffling your feet and saying I’m sorry.

I’ve been a diehard Steelers fan for more than 35 years. Unlike some “fans” seem to think, that doesn’t mean that I have to support every player that wears the Steelers uniform.
Ben’s actions have been despicable. I don’t care if the DA found enough evidence to press charges or not. I don’t care if he’s guilty or not. The fact is, he hasn’t learned anything from his previous and ongoing legal issues and continues to put himself, the team and the league in an undesirable light. I don’t want him as the face of the Steelers franchise any more.
Ben’s near annual issues with women and motorcycles are disgraceful. There are no two ways around it. At the very least Ben is guilty of stupidity… on a multitude of occasions. Most likely he has a serious issue with alcohol and needs to stop drinking ASAP before he ends up in prison.
Having just had a baby girl about 4.5 months ago I now look at things in a bit of a different light. There is no way on earth that I would allow Mr. Roethlisberger anywhere near my daughter now or at any time in the future. That should say all that that needs to be said about the character of any man.
I’m disgusted with Ben and will never don his jersey again. Bring on Dixon or draft another QB.
So
what are you going to do when August comes around and Ben is still the QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Don’t let sport icons be your role models. Even if you think you know th em, you really don’t. I guess this is why its easy for me not to be upset with Ben about it. He hasn’t done anything to me. I never thought of him as a role model so to find flaws in his character doesn’t damage any type of image I had of him. We are all imperfect. I will try to raise my kids the same way.

Idk
I feel like, I bought the jersey I’m going to wear it. it doesn’t mean I condone anything. I means I support my team. Nothing more and nothing less. I guess I’m the only one that can separate values from cheering for my team. NFL has become a religion to some I guess.

You could very easily choose any number of other athletes to support, but most likely, you (as I did) chose Ben to be your representative Steeler because you liked the way he played and maybe supported him as a player as well.
If it was just a team thing, then you would not need it to be a Big Ben jersey to support the Steelers. I am not saying I am going to burn it or anything ridiculous, merely that I am undecided if I can wear it with the innocence and in full support of Ben that I used to. And, honestly, it has nothing to do with religion or Ben being role model, but I have numerous Steeler jerseys and shirts, and at the moment, I feel better wearing one that represents the Steelers at large rather than Ben, or yes, Holmes.
Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.
I have a
Ben jersey and a Ward jersey, will buy a Troy jersey too as soon as this wedding is over. But I got the Ben jersey because I like the steelers. Just because I may cheer for ben on the field doesn’t mean I support what Ben did. I don’t understand how you connect the two.

I’m not sure how you don’t. If you had a favorite musician, and it turned out he murdered someone, would you still proudly wear a shirt you earned from him? Are you divorcing the music you love from the person who made the music? Because unless you think the music and the person who made it are two separate things (highly implausible unless said person is imitating what he thinks is good, which odds are would make it lousy), then you can not consider them in isolation.
I loved Ben’s personality on that field. That same personality is the one that off the field seems to misbehave around women. That, if nothing else, should cause you to reconsider what it was that you liked about his on-the-field persona.
Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.
I pull for ben
because he plays for the Steelers. Thats it, if he was on another team, I’d wouldn’t care about him. Its just a football game. I’m not making it more than what it is. They are guys who play a sport for a living. If you play for the team I like, then I cheer for you to win. If you don’t then I cheer for you to lose. Its simple. When I’m watching a football game, I’m not wondering, did this guy pay his tithes? I’m thinking, he better make this play or I’ma throw my TV out the window. I could care less about what these guys do off the field. The have their own lives that I am not responsible. There are others who feel different. That is why the NFL and the Rooneys have to do what they do, their forced to, I understand that. Its life.

I don't think anybody supports what he did off of the field
But we shouldn’t throw him in the trash. He’s done so much for the Steelers and we know it. His future with the team looks a little slim right now, but we shouldn’t just give up on him. That’s what I don’t understand about some of you guys. He obviously needs help and if he’s willing to do what it takes to do so, then I’ll have his back 100%.
However, if he’s going to be a little b*tch and do nothing, then I guess I can’t complain.

But this discussion between tann and I isn’t about supporting him, which I do fully. Rather, it is about my indecision about whether I can go on wearing his jersey and supporting him wholeheartedly like nothing has happened.

I’ll have to readdress that situation when/if it comes up. I expect I will still be supporting the Steelers and wearing my older and more ragged Ward and Bettis jerseys. However, if Ben continues to remain in the spotlight in a negative manner or I am not satisfied with the action that the league or the Steelers take I may skip the season altogether.
Well
you know Bettis was accused of sexual assault too right?
Steelers football is 60 mins.

Nope
sure didn’t. Guess it’s down to the Ward jersey then.
Seriously, though, this will be Ben’s 7th season in the league. In three of those seven years, Ben’s off field issues in the offseason have turned out to be significant distractions to the team as they try to prepare a grueling NFL season. That reason alone makes Ben an idiot.
The leader of the team and face of the franchise has to be intelligent enough to learn from past mistakes and not put himself into bad situations. At the very least, Ben just doesn’t get that fact. At worst he’s a sexual predator and serial rapist.
Watching OTL on ESPN right now and again Ben’s off field issues are again THE big story. He’s a disgrace to the Steeler uniform. I’m fed up with his immaturity both on and off the field.
Look at this one other way since so many seem to think that Ben is somehow a “victim” in all of these allegations. How many other athletes have had multiple women come forward on multiple occasions accusing the same person of similar offenses? I don’t recall any. Does anybody?
It’s for that reason that I gave Ben the benefit of the doubt a year ago and now have lost all trust in him and his lack of character.
Did you also know
that Ward was accused of sexual assult?

I see someone wants to play devil's advocate
As already stated show me someone else who has had multiple accusers? Are there any? I don’t remember any. The fact there are so few should lead to the conclusion that one false accusation may be fairly common but when there are multiple incidents then there is likely a serious problem.
How many times was Hines accused? How many times was Bettis accused. Were either perennially on the national news year after year after year? Were either accused by multiple people in multiple cities in multiple years? Was there ever volumes and volumes of documents disseminated showing the complete lack of class and character of said accused? They are totally different situations, but way to denigrate to sure fire future hall of famers by linking them to an idiot like Roethlisberger.
I already stated I gave Ben the benefit of the doubt after last season. If I ever find out that Bettis or Ward were guilty then I will dispose of their uniforms also.
If you want to support Ben by wearing your jersey that’s your prerogative. If you think that sexual assault and rape are minor offenses and that wearing a jersey of somebody accused of said offenses is in good taste then go for it.
This is not really new
In the past, pro and college athletes getting accused of sexual assault was a story for a minute and then the media moved on. A couple of years ago, Michael (Blitz) posted a link to a long article on Jerramy(sp?) Stevens’ “exploits” in college, and that stuff sounded at least as bad as anything I’ve heard Ben being accused of. There was no huge scandal then. The difference now is that something has to fill the time in the news cycle, so a month or two ago it was Tiger, and now it’s Ben. If Ben keeps his nose clean from now on, he’ll be fine. He just has to avoid these clubs altogether and find people that will encourage him to keep himself out of trouble. If Ray Lewis can come back from being involved (even if peripherally) with murder, Ben can come back from this.

Just like what?
Ben has now had three major off field situations in seven years. Three.
The first, his accident, I blamed on immaturity and youthful exhuberence. I was sure that he would wisen up and the off field incidents would stop at that point. I didn’t give up on him and gave him full support.
The second, last year’s accusations and the filing of his civil suit, I tried to dismiss as the insane ramblings of a mentally unstable woman. I was hopeful that we would never have to deal with any further offseason Roethlisberger issues.
This offseason is now his third MAJOR incident and I have had enough of his BS.
Like already stated. Show me another athlete that has had multiple accusers of similar behaviors of sexual assault and rape. I don’t recall any and nobody has pointed out any.
Believe me, I hope I am wrong about Ben and he is completely innocent of any wrongdoing, but the facts and evidence don’t support that. If they did, the league and the Steelers would not be discussing what kind of punishment he merits.
Ben has had ample opportunity to clean up his image and make sure he stays out of possibly compromising situations and has failed to do so.
His (and Santonio’s) actions are supposedly now going to cost the Steelers organization a 6 figure fine. I’m not going to condone his behavior or dismiss the incidents just because he is in a Steelers uniform (for the time being).
Seriously people, if Ben were the QB of any other team would any of you be so quick to jump to his defense? I don’t think so. Ben would have been tried and convicted faster than Ray Lewis or and Bengal has ever been.
He and his actions are a disgrace. I hope he is forced to sit for a year and required to clear up his pending civil suit in Reno and avoid any further incidents before he is allowed to play in the NFL again. A slap on the wrist 2-4 game suspension will not send a strong enough message.
It’s truly sad how many are rushing to his defense.
Good agruement
Even if he played for a different team, my judgement wouldn’t change.
There’s always room for people to change and if Ben is willing to get the help he apparently needs, then he deserves to stay as a Steeler. If he’s not willing to commit to the team, then yeah, he should go.
What Would Brian Boitano Do?
In the press conference
the DA stated there weren’t even any cameras in the area where this all took place!!! He said there were cameras in the front part of the club that did indeed show Ben and accuser both walk into the place. This notion of tapes being erased is total bullshit. There was no evidence to tape over in the first place.

Just what hundreds of thousands of other college students were doing over the years
what she was doing in a bar with a fake ID, and ending up with a BAC over twice the legal limit.
Not to say as a father you shouldn’t be pissed, but this not atypical behavior for 18-20 year old college students.
A good poll might be “If you turned 18 after the national drinking age had already gone up to 18 (mid-late 70’s?), did you have a fake ID and get really drunk at a bar local to your school?”

My point wasn't "everybody's doing it, its ok"
My point really was, when you wrote that, I was thinking about when I had a fake ID in college and went and got slammed at bars local to my school. As a parent you don’t sit there and ask why? It seems like you are a step behind the situation by then if you are still confused by the why or what you were doing.
In some ways, it indicates the weakness of having a drinking age of 18, and why there are good arguments for teaching responsibility with alcohol instead of just hoping that being 3 years older will help (European attitudes in mind). But that’s another thread.
fail *he's not saying the drinking age is 18
"I hated putting on that purple uniform, and I hated that raven bird. What really ticked me off is when we played Pittsburgh our whole stadium seemed to be filled with Pittsburgh fans." Tackle Orlando Brown
Not my point as well, didn't mean to imply he said that
If you are asking “what is my child doing in a bar with a fake ID, and ending up with a BAC over twice the legal limit when they are 20,” although I understand that it is a rhetorical question to some degree, its still the wrong question. Because if you don’t know the answer, or have an idea about it because you were there once too (Being 18-20 years old at one time, you might have an insight into what your values were like then and what you risk-assessment critieria were) then you are behind.
The implication with my writing about the drinking age waas that it could be agrued as being kind of a false standard of readiness. My point…..
You should know the answer to the what and why already, or you have been asleep at the switch, and on top of it, if they have gotten into deserved or undeserved trouble, it kind of goes back to your parenting although – important – sometimes the parent does all the right things and the kids just do what they want….to have fun, be social and socially accepted.
Sometimes do stupid things they tell stories of later and laugh about, and other things that they have to carry as an emotional and/or physical burden for the rest of their lives.
I agree with teaching responsibility
but the fact is, having a fake ID is illegal. And my opinion is that it’s also stupid. College kids can go to parties on any given weekend and drink underage without needing an ID (believe me, I remember). So why go and be extra stupid on top of that and carry around something that is evidence of a crime?
Being realistic about drinking means you know your kids might drink when they’re away in college. But you’ve got to hope you’ve taught them well enough to not be stupid about it. In any case, my original point was that this girl was clearly stupid about it. It doesn’t mean anyone is deserving of sexual assault or rape (and this is not a judgment of what happened that night), but still, as a parent I would be very disappointed in my child for putting themselves in that situation. It would be a separate issue from the anger I felt at the accused.
by steely mcballs on Apr 16, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions
My reason for doing it?
So why go and be extra stupid on top of that and carry around something that is evidence of a crime?
Because it was a step up from going to a keg party in some dumpy house and apartment, or on the cliffs in the dark above the Hudson river. It was seemingly more adult and ‘normal,’ the girls i was interested in went to the bars, it was status to have a good fake ID and be able go into any bar whenever you wanted and not because you got randomly lucky, it was a chance to be seen in the good bars and hopefully gain some coolness factor (pathetic, I know, but is this uncommon?)….and because my life experience was limited and I had no real appreciation of being held responsible for my actions after I turned 18.
Getting arrested? ‘not likely’ was what I thought. Have anything bad happen? Last thing on my mind.
what about this?
What is a 28 year old man, much less a multi-millionaire, doing in a college bar? What is he doing buying shots for and hitting on college girls? I believe the “man-law” squad put the statue of limitations at 25 years of age for creeping on college girls.

absolutely
but a well adjusted single man, aged 28, goes to a bar that is primarily attended by young professionals – that’s normal. In 7s case, he goes to a college bar, and buys shots for co-eds – that’s creepy.

Again, there’s an important difference between chasing tail and chasing college tail. He’s a 28 year old multi-millionaire – he has no reason to be at a college bar. It’s creepy behavior.
There’s a term for guys that are in college and still go to HS parties. It also applies to young professionals that still hang out at college bars. It rhymes with “bruiser” and it starts with an “L”.
I’m all for Fat Ben going out with the boys to celebrate his birthday. Just so long as he stays away from the co-eds and the roofies.

That may be true
but you aren’t my kid.
Two of my children went to a university that I was working in, in the same department. They lived very near home, and I saw them all the time. I knew who they hung out with and what they were doing most of the time, not because I was snooping around, but because I could hardly help it. (You have to realize that musicians don’t have a ton of homework, but they do have a ton of rehearsals and concerts that occupy an awful lot of their non-class time.) I didn’t say they didn’t drink – we taught them the responsible use of alcohol at home. I’m not even saying that they might never have gotten drunk on very isolated occasions. But I have a pretty good idea what they were doing, and it wasn’t sleeping around and drinking.
My youngest went to a university a day’s drive away. He spent his spare time (what little he had of it in a very difficult program) in Campus Crusade activities. You may not be down with Campus Crusade, but they have a stellar reputation.
My other child married young, as she met a guy (at church) in Wales when working as an au pair, and they hit it off. Her first child was born 2 years later.
I understand that an awful lot of college students party. It’s just that not all of them do, and you can’t validly conclude that because most people’s kids do mine did as well.

Depends
on what you mean by ‘partying.’ I don’t see anything wrong with parties per se, as long as the time spent isn’t compromising the purpose for which you are supposed at school in the first place. But I don’t see the point of spending vast amounts of money on alcohol, getting totally hammered, and possibly doing a bunch of stupid stuff you may or may not remember later. Not to mention that you feel like crap the next day.
I went to plenty of parties in college, but I didn’t do drugs, I didn’t sleep around, and I essentially never drank to excess. I found that life was more interesting and comfortable that way, and I preferred talking to people who weren’t wasted. And this was the 70s. I fail to see that this is less possible now than then.
I’m not trying to come off as self-righteous but as pragmatic – sorry if it sounds like the former.

Now you are finding a way to judge the other posters?
Values, hypocrite… fairly strong words from someone willing to toss out accusations without backing them up with factual evidence not reliant on a self-conception they seem to have formed of themselves as the leader of whatever new church Sun Myung Moon will be starting…
Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.
Of course I am judging other posters - hello
The same way you are judging me. I repeat, if he would feel the same way if it were his daughter or sister I question his values. If he wouldn’t then I find this to be hypocritical. Do you guys agree that as long as he is a great QB nothing else matters?
"Coincidence is God's way of staying anonymous"
No, I do not agree with that
In my opinion, whether or not he is allowed to do his job post-suspension depends on his being a good QB. Whether or not I cheer for him as I did before or buy his memorabilia is something else that I am weighing up at the moment, so far to the negative.
And, if I am judging you, then turnabout is fairplay… though it seems that my purpose in doing so was effective.
Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.
When that shoe's on the other foot...
Jungle John, you ask what we’d think if the woman were our sister or daughter. Fair enough. Would you feel any different if it was your brother in Ben’s situation? Full investigation with no charges at all, yet many people want to rake him over the coals? Might you be a little more supportive of him and a little less likely to assume the worst in that case?

I can honestly say that if he were my brother
I would do all I could to help him get the help he needed but that would begin with coming to terms with the truth, and doing all he could to repair the damage he had done so he can start rebuilding his life. I wish the same for Ben. No I would not desert him a he is my brother and I would protect him as much as I could but I would also urge him to come clean and admit to his transgressions. There is a limit as to how much i would protect him even if there isn’t a limit to my love for him. I don’t think Ben has done that. Once he confesses his guilt he can ask forgivness and the healing process can begin. Even without a criminal conviction, if Ben were my brother, I would still be aware that he behaved in a pretty reprehensible manner and I wouldn’t just let him off the hook I would urge him to get some help with an obvious psycological problem for his own good..
Hey, this is not a Bengals Steelers thing at all. I hope you believe that.

Glad I’m not your brother.
This premise that all these cases are the same (or that they all even happened) is ridiculous. Granted, Ben has a problem and a brother should make him confront it. But he’s supposed to confess “his guilt”? Welcome to JungleJohn America, my friends, where accusation = guilt.

concerning the second allegation...
This is reported in the AP from Atlanta:
“Georgia Bureau of Investigation documents released Thursday show that after the most recent accusation surfaced, a 16-year-old in a youth law enforcement program told authorities he knew about incidents involving Roethlisberger and a friend’s sister”
Seriously? A 16 year old in a law enforcement program “knows” about incidents with a friend’s sister? And now it’s posted as another incident? They haven’t interviewed anyone involved, just this 16 year old.

This is an honest assessment from a Bengals fan,
and I’m trying to be as unobjective as I can be here. Your QB seems like a piece of shit. Yeah, I understand that he is presumed innocent as no charges are being filed, but he still has his liberty and based on the “facts” given by the DA, he should be damn grateful for that. Assuming that the DA’s office gave the investigation it’s due diligence, and the story of that night that was presented at the press conference was credible, I think most reasonable people can say that it is highly likely that Big Ben’s actions were totally out of line.
That said, I see this as a reflection of Big Ben himself, and not the Steelers as a franchise. What class Ben lacks, the Rooneys make up for in spades. Of course I hate your team and hope you lose every game this coming season, but I can’t take that from you guys – the Rooneys are a class act. I would recommend cutting this piece of trash before he drags your organization’s reputation and chemistry down with him, but I think you all can and probably do have confidence that the team’s ownership will make the right call.
Thanks for the support

Yeah I guess if my team's QB was a borderline sexual predator at best,
and a full-fledged rapist at worst, I would want to talk about something else too.
So let’s go that route. Your team just lost arguably your best WR and are in the midst of a full blown QB controversy, while we have essentially the same team that beat yours twice last year. What makes you think you’ll beat us now? Have fun getting swept by the Browns.
Well said
I think though with a guy like Troy back playing 100% and Aaron Smith it’ll be a little bit harder to score on us, but its not like those guys are good.

That's a totally valid point,

The DA was obviously of the same opinion – he just didn’t feel that it could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
But your opinion IS public opinion

not exactly, if you believe there is a bomb on the plane, and there isn’t you’d get into a lot of trouble advertising your opinion that there was a bomb on the plane. If the DA really believe a law was broken, he should have pressed charges and continued the investigation. Thats my opinion. I don’t think he believe a law as broken that’s why it was quick for him to make a decision. But he did want to use a national platform to gain national exposure.

Time for the Steelers and Ben to part ways
Before I make my point, we did NOT win the first Super Bowl in spite of Ben. He torched the Broncos and played a flawless first half against a HEAVILY favored Colts team to get us there. In the super bowl he ran for a TD and converted a 3rd and 26 with a pass down to the goal line to Hines Ward in typical Big Ben fashion. However, I can’t root for him anymore. At this point I’d take the Rams 2nd (33rd overall and something next year). Trade him to Buffalo, Jacksonville, St Louis or Seattle get one good pick this year and something next year and let’s move on. It won’t feel as gratifying beating down the Bengals and Ravens if we know and they know our QB’s is a lowlife. We can try to ignore it but deep down we all know how it will be next year on these message boards. The ONLY way I can see us salvaging Big Ben in Pittsburgh is if the team suspends him the ENTIRE 2010 season. If he comes back humble in 2011 people will feel like he at least was punished to some degree and be more likely to move on. I’m more than willing to go through a few bumps rebuilding than to be ashamed of my Steelers. If you’re not, I don’t know what to tell you…

Problem is
The other incident mentioned was reported by the alleged victims brother. Not a witness to the event but reports “my sister told me this happened.” Did the sister refuse to talk to police I am sure they would have wanted to interview her to build the pattern of behavior thing. Ben better just settle McNulty he can’t win now civil cases don’t need proof beyond a reasonable doubt. He needs everyone to stop talking about all this. Anyone who reads this and knows BBR better make sure he understands that regardless of the financial hit and the amount it will hurt the team he will not survive another incident of any kind. Personally I think he needs a suspension for the entire season. If he gets suspended 4 games and we go 1-3 and are in the hole it will create a bad situation in the locker room. Tell him he takes the suspension or we trade him to Oakland for a towel boy no legal challenges or appeals of the suspension.
This must stop anyone less than a franchise QB would be history black white or green with yellow dots. His position and his contract are the only things saving is a** right now not his race.
Well
the team can’t suspend him for the entire season and that would be unprecedented and unwarranted. You get 1 season for being charged of several crimes. Even convicted of crimes. but I’ve never seen anyone suspended for 1 season because they were accused of a crime. thats beyond rediculous. You know the type of black mail these players are under, ‘If you don’t do this I’m going to accuse you of _______ and you’re going to loose a year worth of pay". The players might as well stay in their houses all day everyday unless it has something to do with the team because its not safe out here with people accusing and others suggesting outlandish disciplinary actions.

I think it is better for the locker room
2 4 or 6 games with a losing record makes for a bad locker room environment when he returns. 1-3 start most likely ruins the season starts a locker room divide that continued losing will only make worse as the season wears on. Things can become heated to the point that it may become beyond overcoming. With a full year suspension The players go out do their best and next year is a new season. While I agree the league should not suspend him for the season the Rooney’s are well within their right to do so. The main problem I see is they signed a lot of one year type things to take one more shot at it before we might be headed to a rebuilding period. If I were the Rooney’s I would tell him he sits for a year and accepts it or we trade him to the Raiders.
This has gone beyond the realm of total innocence and false accusations were there is smoke there is fire. Where I felt McNulty was a loon I now feel that her actions after may have been a coping mechanism people do strange things to cope and no one handles things the same as anyone else. Maybe to be able to function she had to convince her self that it was something real and not an assault. She then became unable to hold onto that illusion when he returned to town and didn’t contact her.
At best he, maybe only when he drinks, is a brute and doesn’t show women the proper respect at worst the accusations are true but unprovable.

this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion
I was born and bred in PA. Went to college in the Burgh and bleed black & gold. Now live in Chicago. And I was just wondering, have you all lost your bleeping minds over there? We went 25 years without a great QB. There would be no Sixburgh with Ben. We’d still be begging for one for the thumb. Sure, he has displayed some immature and embarrassing behavior, but how about a little patience? A little support? He worth the investment as a QB. Isn’t he worth the investment as a person. Please, can everyone get off their moral soap box now, take a deep breath and relax?
He got it after McNulty from us
In return we expect him to not put us as fans in a position of defending him again. Some things in this incident are beyond questioning. He was partying drinking and did enter a bathroom with a very drunk girl he did not know. Even if she consented is that something anyone can approve of? Will you raise your sons to say hey it is ok to have sex with a girl that is drunk beyond her ability to make a choice? I have had women I knew be drunk and make passes at me when I knew they never would have if they had been sober I never acted on those incidents it is not right to take advantage of a woman in that condition unless there is some sort of preexisting relationship there.

The next post should be on whether or not Dennis Dixon is ready for the spotlight. Even if Ben is just suspended for a few games, this could be a major impact on the season. I think that Jeff Garcia is still looking for work. He’s not the greatest but he’s a gamer…and we’ve gotten to the super bowl with Neal O’Donnell, so who knows.
I am sure that I am going to reiterate several points made already, but it seems obvious to me that Ben is very much guilty of making poor decisions, but that is about all. Lets not forgot that he is counter-suing in the civil suit for the first accusation against him. Because he was very much in the spotlight for that allegation – an allegation that also had no proof associated with it – it could COULD be the reason why all these other claims are also coming forth, which would just lend credence and credibility to his pending counter-suit. These young women are meeting Ben in places late at night that serve alcohol (and lets not blame Ben for giving them alcohol, it is the establishments responsibility to make sure this kind of thing does not happen, for all we know, she could have told Ben she was old enough, I doubt he would check). We all need to understand that being young and intoxicated can lead to stupid behavior (anyone ever see a girls gone wild video?). It is a very real possibility that these young women are putting themselves in poor situations, regretting it, and setting forth allegations. They think “Gee, Ben has been accused of this, this, and this before, maybe he did do something to me that I didn’t want.” Remember, there is no proof of any wrong doing by Ben in any situation, its always just hearsay and accusation. And, about him exposing himself to someone, come on. He exposes himself, makes lewd comments, she is appalled, but still shows up to a party a week later and then tells her father, but no charges are brought forth. Let me take a wild guess as to why…..No proof, just hearsay and accusation. Stop vilifying Ben, there is no proof of anything. All this being said, dude needs a steady girlfriend desperately.
how many behind Tiger Woods is he?
crap I bet the Rooney’s never sign a long term contract again. Who needs a QB that would be willing to over look this and take on his salary? The Bengals? This just proves that today’s athletes have no respect for the franchise’s tradition that they play for. If the league wants to change this b.s. then come contract time make sure that legal problems makes a contract null and void.
He is way behind Tiger but you know how Ben can rally in the last minute. Don’t count him out.

And the Steelers are letting events control them instead of the way it should be.
Ben needs to make a sincere public apology and pledge to mend his ways. Then everyone just needs to move on. And I’m not buying that there aren’t at least 30 NFL teams who would jump through hoops to get BB on their team. Just more bullshit from the usual sources.

Time To Move On
Mr. Rooney, The Steelers have built their brand and by doing things the right way. When we cut Plaxico and Bam Morris, they were cut when they demonstrated bad personal judgement before their personal problems got significantly worse, which they always do. (Santonio seems to fit this mold, so we will see what happens next for him with the Jets.)
Unless, you want “Rapistberger” knock-off jerseys being worn with the steeler logo on the Streets of Pittsburgh and the prospect of Heinz field booing its own offense (or at least its own QB), do the right thing. Get what you can for him, but make sure Rapistberger never wears the Steeler Jersey again. (Al Davis and the Raiders might be interested.)
