Free Agency wrap-up
I’m sure we will have to wait until after the draft to know for sure, but it’s nice to discuss something football related at this point isn’t it?So let’s wrap up the free agency situation as the draft draws closer.
It seems the Steelers almost always have one heart breaking loss in free agency. I was thinking this year was the exception to the rule until Santonio Holmes, allegedly, told some girl to go kill herself via twitter and got himself traded to the j-e-t-s jets. Although I'm very okay about the trade, the loss of that kind of talent is heartbreaking.
Parker is off to Washington (good luck and best wishes FWP). This was inevitable the day we took Mendenhall in the first round. The Steelers aren't going to pay stater money to a backup running back.
Rejoining the team after finding out what it feels like to play for teams that don’t know how to win are Antwaan Randle El and Larry Foote. Arnaz Battle, Will Allen, Derrick Doggett, and Jonathan Scott have also joined the team.
So, with the recent signings of free agents; Sepulveda, Colon, Gay, and Spaeth the Steelers are left with relatively few free agents remaining.
As I understand it Galloway, Boiman, and Davis won't be back. So of the remaining players who will be back? I’m sure we will have to wait until after the draft to know for sure, but it’s nice to discuss something football related at this point isn’t it?
Players Signed:
Players remaining:
Of the remaining players do Carter, Kirschke, Stapleton, or Townsend have a place on this team next year?

I thought
that Kirschke was planning to retire. Of that list the one I’d most like to see stay on is Deshea, mainly because he’s a class act and a good influence. I don’t know whether they think they can afford him (either in terms of salary or roster space) though. He also had one of the secondary’s few interceptions, once Troy was out, although it could be viewed as too little too late. I hate to see Holmes’ talent on another team, but they are welcome to his attitude..
Thanks for the wrap-up.

Townsend
could be kept as a backup. Kirschke also. Carter and Stapleton can offer their services elsewhere. We should have signed a veteran, starting CB this year but we didn’t so unless we get lucky in the draft or one of our second years steps up, it is going to be a long season against the likes of Brady, Sanchez, Manning, Flacco etc…
+1

sanchez?
lets not anoint him elite QB status just yet. he’s only in year 2…

agreed
I think he has potential but he is still along way from being an elite player. Although the Jets should be passing more, I still think they will be a run first team.
And then we all woke up!

Seriously...
And he didn’t have a great rookie year. 63 QB rating, 53.8 comp%, 12 TDs to 20 INTs, 10 fumbles.
The future is not what it used to be.

Adding Sanchez and Flacco
was more an indictment on our secondary (not Troy) than acknowledging their prowess as QBs. They are QBs we will face most years.
Who?
we tried that last year and it failed. All the CB that were worth grabing were young and expensive, old and expensive or old and washed out.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
We just dumped a problem WR just so we could draft another?

The way the team looks from what we signed I expect a DB NT and OL to be our early grabs. I know we go BPA, but those are strengths of this draft and likely the BPA will be one of those three, I think the signings and non-signings have set us up well to take advantage of this draft’s strengths.
To not draft a NT or DB this year (or even 2 DB and a NT) would be stupid. It’s a great class for those positions and we need to take advantage.
I’d love us to trade up and get another 2nd round pick. There is so much talent in the first two rounds this year. I’m actually jealous of the Pats draft picks, they are going to get some serious defensive talent this year.
As for the FA’s I could see Kirschke resigning if they aren’t sold on Sonny Harris, and Townsend if they don’t get a DB and the soph’s don’t look good. I’m hoping to see Urbik, K. Wallace, and Sonny make the team this year. Also looking forward to seeing if Redman or Summers have improved. There’s a lot of potential I hope we see some benefit from. Those guys would be better than any FA.
I'm happy we got SB XL with willie
It feels good knowing he was a big reason for that championship, so at least we know he’ll always have a place in pittsburgh. It makes it easier to see him go even though I’ll still miss him.
And I can’t wait to see Carter go. He should never be forgiven for that 2008 playoff game where he looked like a retard trying to tackle Garrard.
I think Deshea is going to retire

Favorite Deshea play
was 08 at Dallas. The pick 6 that I rubbed in my cowboy friends’ faces all week long. Awesome.

Peter: I am so not competitive. In fact, I am the least non-competitive. So I win.

None of those guys
Too many picks. No reason to keep kirschke as the 7th DL and lose someone who might help in the future like Sonny Harris or some other youngster. Furthermore, a vet 3-4 end can be had for the vet minimum and be ready to play in a few days if you end up having a key injury and your “youngster” isn’t ready to play.
Same thing for Townsend/Carter, I’d rather see some 23-year old with speed get tooled and maybe learn from it than to see Deshea or Carter try to make a stop with a walker. Also, maybe the young learning backuop DB can play ST.
Thanks Deshea, you had a nice run in the Burgh and you will be missed (in fact, you were missed last year). Time to become a DB coach, you will excel.
