I'll make this real quick - if you act in a way that makes longer tenured community members not want to be around the site as much as they used to, you're going to get banned. I've gotten a number of emails from people I respect saying the experience has been diminished for them. Folks that aren't used to being part of an online community necessarily, and folks who once took great pride in how civil and equal and tolerant our space was compared to the noisy, ugly and loud-mouthed message boards that gave communities like ours a bad rap.

I'll just leave it at that for now because I've made it clear time and again that all you have to do here is fit in and not try to make it the 'me show'. Not many other rules other than that and basic courtesy. Spare me any sort of 'free speech, censorship, BS either.' This is my site and I tailor all my 'rules' to making sure that the rock solid, intelligent, tolerant folks (most all of you) continue to get to enjoy this space how it's always been - free of grandstanders, bigots, etc. I'm fair as can be but have my limits, even when you're not 'doing anything wrong.'

So, be a part of the most vocal and passionate Steelers community on the internet or don't. More the merrier, as everybody here has always shown to newer folks. I'm pretty fucking tired though of being embarrassed as I respond to longtime readers I respect voicing their concerns and complaints.

Thanks.

I apologize if I have offended anyone or am one of the “guilty parties” being spoken of in this message. I have respect for you all. We should respect Blitz and this community and take this to heart. Go Steelers. And let’s all step up from here on out.

Once again you hit the nail on the head

MB, I couldn’t agree more that this site attracts a broad fan base able to disagree without getting catty. I think a big part of the problem is the offseason has many of us exhausted from bad news, so maybe people are edgier than they would normally be.

I’ve looked at and followed a great number of Steeler fan sites over the years and I have to say that this site is by far the best. So a big “THANK YOU!” to MB for the herculean effort it takes to keep this thing productive, entertaining, informative, and fun. I don’t post often, but rest assured, I’m here every day, reading and learning and laughing. This, and a cup of coffee in my Steeler mug is how I start my mornings!

We’re all under a great deal of off-season stress lately, and stress manifests itself in different ways, including some snarky comments that are probably better left unsaid. Let’s all strive to respect the opinions of others (even if we disagree). We’re all here for the same reason: we love the Steelers. Let’s not forget that.

This old timer

appreciates that you care so much about us. Thanks, Michael!

I know haven’t been as active in the last year, but this is still my first sports site to visit when I’m able. In the last few days, if I have a complaint on the tone, it would be more from the Trollers from other teams than anything else, but I know about the general snarkiness that you are referring to in some cases as well. Well reasoned debate is always preferable to insults.

Darn kids...

As a fellow old timer I still come to this blog for all my Steelers needs. The hardest thing for me is the explosion of fan posts. It used to be that I’d read everything that came our way because they were all well thought out and most other posters were also reading everything so they were making sure to keep their posts fresh and not rehash the same topics that were being discussed other places. As is we now have to many users and too many comments to keep up.

One thing that could be interesting (not sure what influence you have on the development of the site, Blitz) would be if the side bar with fan posts could accommodate some criteria. Where I could say that I want to see posts from X user or group posts together so that when making a post you have to say what category it falls in. That way any Big Ben post will fall into one big bin (no pun intended) and it wouldn’t push any other thoughts off the main page.

As always the site is fantastic and hats off to Blitz and the other mods for keeping us going. Hopefully the offseason will be more about football and less about drama moving forward.

by Chicago Steeler on Apr 23, 2010 9:28 AM EDT reply actions

The only problem with the subject bin idea

is that one might miss some posts that have a lot to say, because the subject matter has been rather overdone. I think that all we can do is continually remind people to please consider commenting on an existing post, rather than making a new one, especially on hot button topics. But in the end you can’t stop anybody from posting whatever they like without a full-time moderator to read each new post and kill the ones that don’t add anything to the discussion…

And no, Hi5, you can’t be that mod : )

I still love this blog, and I am happy for Michael it has become so popular, but the size and number of posts and comments per post has grown so much, that is the main reason I rarely comment anymore.

I do not wish you banned

I do not wish anyone banned. I have a bit of problem with banning but its not my site. Like many, I was a passive observer of this site for quite a while before I learned the rules of engagement here at BTSC. I am by no means a conformist in my day to day life. Just ask Count’em. But, I very much love this site and wanted to be able to participate without negatively altering the pre-existing environment.

Having said that, I am just as guilty of some of the things Michael has been referencing lately, such as waves and threadjacking. But, subsequent to Michael’s request to tone it down for the sake of the site’s integrity, I have respectfully been trying to do just that.

Regardless of how you write, I surmise that you are an intelligent person. You just do not seem to be able to take a hint. Take it for what its worth. That is all I have to say on the matter.

by klompus on Apr 23, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

More than anything, by the time I get around to reading a posting it has 200 comments. I would generously say 20% of those have anything of interest to me, and I simply am not going to read them all. And I used to enjoy busting the balls of the people who over react/freak out/jump to conclusions/make ridiculous statements, but, again, if I do happen to read them in that huge mess of comments, others have already typically made the same comments that I would have made. So, I mostly now am just a lurker.

by worldtrip on Apr 23, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm still here

For me it is a combination of many factors. For one, I simply don’t spend as much time on here in general as I did at one time. Doing other stuff. The site to some extent is a victim of it’s own success. It has gotten so large it lost some of the community that I felt before. Not complainng about that. Best Steeler site online, it deserves that success. And yes, some of the newer people do need to be smacked down a bit, but, frankly, I got a few well deserved smacks when I first joined. Fortunately they came mostly from Blitz, and he has a pretty even handed smack.

And thanks steelersgrl for the comment.

Yeah it is hard to find the content worth reading sometimes…I find myself hitting ‘z’ quite often. The site has really blown up in the year since I have gotten hear and I don’t see a solution to that problem.

Its an endemic problem on any site with the volume we now have here. I hope that the future versions of SB Nation have comment ranking, like slashdot. They have a great system for filtering whats “worth reading” from the ‘me too, i also agree 1,000%’ comments.

I’m also relatively new, I think about a year now. I remember I joined in the off season last year because I wanted more football in the off season. I’ve appreciated the sense of community on here and I was welcomed instantly.

However, since I am a newcomer, I realize I can get a bit silly sometimes, so I just want to apologize if my off-topic comments have aggravated anyone or blemished BTSC’s good name in any way.

I have noticed that in the last couple months it’s gotten crazy though. I agree with Johnny, it could be due to trolls and opposing fans coming in. Hopefully it will calm down now the draft is here.

Well, between Ben and the draft,

it’s not very surprising that more people are drawn here (the best of the best of Steelers blogs, IMO), that some of them will be new to the blogging game and not recognize online courtesy, and that some few will be trolling. As Senor Wences would say, “s’awright”.

And as long as I’m giving out kudos, some of the folks blogging here are among the best I’ve ever read, anywhere. Thanks for the insights, guys ’n gals.

I never mean to be not nice. If I’ve been that way to some, that was not my intention and I apologize. With the current climate of the franchise there has been a level of tension that creates a complex environment for some. I humbly apologize if I’ve said anything that has crossed the line with anybody.

But, if you say something I think is wrong, I’m going to tell you why I feel the opposite way, that’s just me. If my disagreement with your opinions comes across as me being an asshole, I do not mean to be. I’m simply trying to get some discussion going on the topic.

You know, I wonder if there could be

a short (automated) test that new members have to take and pass before they can get a username. To be able to pass it, they would have to have read and processed Blitz’s “Rules of the Site” (or whatever it’s called) post. And I think the mods should then strongly enforce those rules for the person’s first week or two, since they know that the poster knows the rules and has just chosen to ignore them. Might discourage trolls, too. If it cuts down the traffic a bit, so be it. I don’t think that the site is at the point anymore where it needs huge influxes of new traffic to persuade advertisers that it is a good bet. (I could be totally wrong about that, of course.)

so if you are to join, you have to agree to the terms and wait one day before posting (to let the mods weed out the spam, obvious trolls whatever…which makes more work for the mods). Surprised BTSC doesn’t have the same

by Twell on Apr 23, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think

that this post is suggesting that we all have to agree – it would get pretty boring pretty fast. But there are ways to disagree that are civil and invite further discussion, and there are ways to disagree that aren’t and don’t. Resorting to name-calling generally indicates to me that a commenter either feels that their argument is weak, or is too lazy to bolster it with corroborating information. For the record, you certainly have never disagreed with me in a way that I found uncivil. I enjoy your comments.

You know...

I was going to disagree in an uncivil way for the comedic effect, but I don’t want to dimminish the post’s intentions by doing so. You’re off the hook (this time) momma :). It seems to me sometimes that just disagreeing with someone can be taken as an insult, and that is what I meant by the last part. Thank you, by the way, your posts are must reads for me too.

Finally...

a site I can remain a member of and a leader I can get behind. Thank you, Blitz. Through most of the early 2K’s I was a regular contributor (Stiller Fan in GA) on several Steelers blogs and forums; I had to stop reading and posting on them due to the personal attacks on one another and downright pettiness. Nobody was safe going to them—many of you came here from there as well, so I know you understand.

One of my favorite contributors here is Mr. MaLor. He would have been cussed out and ridiculed by the “leaders” of said boards without having his comments even read. I appreciate that we can rib one another without stating that we “know who he is and where he lives cuz we looked it up on whitepagesDOTcom, and we are coming for him and his family.” (I’m sure he is too!) Whether you like it or not, or whether he likes it or not, MM is a part of the BTSC community. Many “newbies”— especially including those only joining to complain about BB, Tone, the Rooney’s, etc.—need not bring your personal hatred for any opposing team’s fans from your other so-called Steelers community. Disagree. But stick to comments about football, not how you think he is an idiot because he likes our biggest rival. I assure you, he is not.

I digress.

I read BTSC for over a year before becoming a member and posting. Never, in all that time did I see the sorts of comments that I have seen lately. I understand this offseason has been very trying for us, but we must remain civil in our words toward one another. Because unless we really are trying to hunt each other down, our words are all we have here—they’re what ties this Steelers community together; Let’s not use them to tear it apart.

Just a pet peeve, i suppose

I hate the Homers who treat the opposing teams fans like crap, only because of their loyalty to their team. Personally, I enjoy hearing from others. From the ribbing (different than gloating) to the insights of our opponents, their opinions are valued by me.

Sheesh! I think I can hear my heart bleeding.

I hate the Ravens! There, I feel better.

One of the things that attracted me to this site

was the prevailing civility between BTSC folk and fans of other teams. Trolling happens, sure, but not nearly to the degree I would have suspected.

Except for MaLoR. I detest that smug, crab-eating, NattyBoh guzzling Baltimoron ;-)

Have to say though- the SBnation system greatly aids in that

I like how I can sign up at any team’s site with my info from this one. Thats gotta be driving some of the trolls, as well as worthwhile commenters. I just love how we had those weekly posts from the opposition where we could ask them questions, and someone from here would post at their SB nation site- thats just building good community.

you have a good point

The tone of this blog is very good. I have been reading a lot of NFL blogs this last year and this blog, until some recent unpleasantness, has been outstanding. There is disagreement at times but it is almost always civil. Post are reasoned and well thought out (expect for mine but they were mostly meant as safe time fillers till the draft).

I enjoy Malor’s presence here. He, as several of the fans of other teams, tend to be positive or at least not entirely ignorant when they visit and are generally treated well. When they are not, one of or long stnading members straightens out the offender. I respect that type of self restraint and self policing. I am sorry I can’t say it is the same at all the sites I have visited.

Agreed. I try to be decent and engage with opposing fans when they come here and type respectfully. But one cross word though and it’s open season. I don’t want to hear a bengals fan tell me how criminal the Steelers are or a broncos fan telling me how pious his organization is in a thread about BB. Not at this site. I’m not having it.

Hopefully this poison is draining and we’ll be able to talk serious football again soon. Four more months.

i like this too

I don’t usually post too much on the other team’s sites. I’ll go look around within our division or check out if something big happened to a team(that Tebow thread over at the Donk’s page was funny). I alway enjoy the pregame discussion threads opposing teams contributors bring here, and the civility at which they encompass. Promotes a community as a whole within SB. Darn, my roomate is a friggin Bengals fan, and I know more about his team than he does.. That aside, the trolls stand out quick, get what they deserve, and cement us as a community at the BTSC. That has it’s value too.

I don’t claim to know spit about what makes a good site, or, more importantly, a good on-line community. But, since Blitz has opened the door, I’ll toss in a few reasons why my activity here has been cut down to almost zip over the past 6 months.

Whining – Make your point. Defend your point. Call it a night. All the senseless repetition of the same statements makes reading a thread exhausting.

New thread/same old topic – It takes serious thought, patience, and hard work to find the topic or point of view for a quality fanpost. Just ask MR. I don’t see that kind of effort going into recent fanposts. Nowadays, I stick with the main page.

Profanity – A well-placed cuss word is a thing of beauty. Achieving “well-placed” usually requires surprise.

I’m not an old-timer, and I’ve never been highly active. That just means I fall into a demographic that is more likely to leave for another source of Steelers entertainment. Lucky for Blitz, the front page is quality material.

I have seen people who enjoyed humourous writing that never got past the pie in the face level of comedy in their own writing. Great humour can be very subtle and there are some who do not get it.

I try to err of the side of caution and assume that if what I am writing could be taken the wrong way it will.

Thanks Blitz

I think I am lucky that I never invested much time on any other boards so i didn’t get full of bad experiences, but at the same time should appreciate BTSC and not take it for granted. More often than not I enjoy the off-topic back and forth, but I can see how it can also be detrimental. Sometimes the off-topic stuff can be the ‘community’ aspect that helps us get to know each other, builds the relationships. Sometimes it derails good discussion.

BTSC can be a great opportunity for people who want to practice ‘amateur’ sport journalism, which in my mind is the purest form of journalism…no funded bias, just straight shootin’. I wonder if there is a way to make it more clear about what kind of post is a better Fanshot as opposed to a Fanpost. Its easy to see why some people will take a fanpost and write from a voice of expressing their current emotional or mental state, as in journaling. Blogs serve that function, just not this one that I can tell. Its a subtle distinction.

Getting back to community, this is my learning community. I work in Distance Ed, so this is actually almost work-sanctioned because I gain valuable insight into informal learning, and the dynamics of online communities. The key factor in online communities is an ongoing passion for what brings everyone together, and truthfully, I keep coming back because most here are very good about sharing their expertise and the results of their own passion.

Plus, I have rooted for this team for too long without really knowing how it all works. Now I can have reasonably informed conversation with most other fans, and I can tell how much I have learned when I talk to a “I just watch the games..I don’t know the names” fans (no knock on them, the more the merrier as has been expressed by others here).

Thanks BTSC community, and if I have offended at any juncture, let call a do-over.

I fear that applies to me in some cases...

Which means it probably does. Maybe not the bully part, and I don’t consider myself a know it all, far from it, but, I could see how my activity level could come across in such a way. I don’t do it intentionally and will try and ease up a bit.

correct!

thanks for clarifying that. stuff like music though and whatever else for kicks is great stuff though and needed during the long offseason.

It gets easier from this point forward

The draft and free agent pickups will keep us all on our toes and much to talk about until training camp. Even Ben’s ongoing difficulties can be talked about minus the harsh emotions and insults.

I’m looking forward to this season and sharing the process with the community. Let’s all build on what attracted us to the site in the first place. And (this cannot be said enough) thanks Blitz for setting the tone and keeping us in line.

by Ivan Cole (RickVa) on Apr 23, 2010 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks Blitz

And thanks to everybody for taking the site and Michael’s recommendations seriously. Respect and sharing space (not taking over discussions by over-posting) are key to good reads and quality exchanges. I think getting the whole BB fiasco behind us will help tremendously. Frankly I’m surprised by the apologies made by some of our best members. I guess everybody’s been on edge with this awful offseason we’ve had but most of you guys have nothing to apologize for, in my opinion. That said everybody can chip in a bit to make sure we keep up the quality of dialogue that has made BTSC so special… I know I’ll do my bestest!

Boy, are you ever right...

The Ben thing was destructive because it forced folks to deal with an emotionally charged issue in a venue where many are trying to escape just such stuff. Since the situation invited such passion, it became more difficult to recognize that good people can honestly come to differing conclusions from the same facts. Past tense is the key now — it is over.

A+

I’m a lurker, not a poster, but haven’t been lurking much lately because I felt like the tone had definitely changed in the wake of the Ben episode. I like learning from folks who know their stuff, which is why I think this is the best Black-n-Gold site; but honestly haven’t been learning much and was feeling frustrated with what seemed to me to be rather (very?) unpleasant ways of expressing opinions. If I wanna read louts, I can go to yahoo sports.

for reminding us about what is important. Like others before me here, if I offended anyone I am sorry. I try not to offend people and personally attack them, so i hope that none of what i posted yesterday could have been taken that way. Like Johnny said, there was so much BB bashing, and that nonsense was added to some nonsense at work, and before I knew it I probably posted more yesterday than in my short history of membership here. I know most of y’all may not read this, but this is the first chance i had to post.

1 big Steeler Nation group hug

This really is a great site and no matter what opinion(s) people have (and even whether I agree with them or not) I’m so glad to see that folks are willing to voice their opinions.

You cannot be a Steeler fan without being passionate. One of the most appealing things about hanging out with other fans is after the disagreeing, name-calling and “are-you-freakin’-kidding-me’s” are done…. the common denominator is still loyalty to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This has been a particularly disheartening off season for us all and it would be too easy to become a house divided. Believe it or not… IMHO it’s us; the fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers that is the glue and pride of the franchise. Regardless of opinions, our support is vital to our team.

Blitz, I do appreciate your effort and the time you devote making all of this possible. Thanks.

WOW......

I agree with you and am in tears. We ARE THE GLUE!!!! WE ARE THE FOUNDATION!!!! WE ARE THE…….ran out of what we are. I first saw the Steelers in ‘75. A “really important game” according to my grandfather against Minnesota. Super Bowl IX I hear. I didn’t care if it was a pre-season game. Boy how those Steelers Shined. Our QB was dumb as a box of rocks according to everyone. Spot him a C and a T and he couldn’t spell cat. But he didn’t diddle girls without their permission in the off season. Mean Joe?….only on the field….Pig Ben has tarnished this GREAT and wonderful franchise. You can’t draft character. You can however, draft young men with morals. And thats the key.

SPOT ON BLITZ

Before my first ever post a few years ago, I had lurked in the shadows for along time and looked to this page as the “de facto” Steelers website period! I used too check out this site more than I would log into my personal and work email combined daily. Back in the day, almost everyone had something worthwhile to say and for the most part, treated everyone with respect. Even when someone came along and got out of line, the community sort of policed itself. Shit… Now I check in once or twice a week maybe and can’t tell you the last time I posted a comment. Its not because I don’t care or I don’t love the site, but because its just been easier to sift through all the B.S to get my fix. I look forward to getting back to old days when I would visit other sites and think to myself how lucky we are over @ BTSCQ!

I’m glad you posted this Blitz and will start cracking back on CRAZY contributors. This will maybe back the harmony necessary for this many people to come together express their points and views without being disrespected or attacked by someone with an agenda and a shitload more time than anyone else to sit around and think of cute shit to say.
As crazy as it may sounds, kind makes you long for the days when the only thing we had to worry about was an occasional Robert Ethan siting!

Sorry such a long post but I had to get that off my chest! Great job Blitz and the MODS,and last but not least, all the old timers start posting again!

and yes, i was just thinking about Robert Ethan earlier in the context of all this. He was an ass, but at least a thoughtful ass.
