So the first pick is squared away and as is to be expected the selection has spurred a bit of discussion, maybe a hint of controversy. There's certainly a very vocal camp that thinks we missed the boat by not going for a DB. I have to say that I agree with Blitz in that we have a solid, if underdeveloped stable of young DB's that may very well surprise us and the fact is that by the numbers alone our D was solid last year and its not unreasonable to expect Troy and A. Smith back at full go for the season. Honestly, I find it hard to be shocked at all that we made a move that will likely immediately improve our O-Line, afterall the Rooney's themselves signaled the need for a return to Steeler Football. More after the jump...
The one thing that has seriously hampered our offense the last year or two was a solid, bruising running game. As much as I loved Fast Willie (best of luck with the 'skins) he simply wasn't the consistent back our offense needed. We have Ben and Company there to light it up, what we really need is a ground game that compliments that, i.e., one that can grind it out, move the chains and punish a defense. I think we can all agree that Mendy has the potential to give us that and more with his solid size and speed (now if we can just convince Ben to dump it out of the backfield occasionally, but thats a matter for a different post). But as we all know a running back is only as good as his line. With Pouncey we get another piece for the O-Line puzzle.
Pouncey has the potential to be exactly what the doctor ordered for us Steelers fans who miss seeing the opposing D get blown up in the trenches. He has the size (6'4, 304lbs) and strength to handle a nose guard on his own and the quick first step and speed that will let him get to the second level, something we haven't seen a Steeler Center do consistently in recent years. The guy is a mauler with Mike Webster toughness, Pouncey played a great game in the Sugar Bowl WITH kidney stones. And you have to love a guy with 36 touchdown-resulting blocks.
Essentially, what it boils down to is trusting in our stellar FO to make the choices that we know will lead us toward big trophy #7. I, for one, think we are on the right track.
