With a night to think about who the Steelers should select with their remaining picks in rounds 4 - 7 of the 2010 NFL draft, I have been looking at all the prospective athletes that are still available and thought I would put some thoughts down on potential picks. I view these rounds as based upon drafting solely for need rather than best player available because at some point, the line between talent and need must become too blurry, so I set the line at the 4th round First, we need to decide what positions should be addressed with our remaining picks. As you all know, we've added our future OC, improved depth at OLB, and took a WR in round 3. So, what remains as a need position? I know many of you have been calling for a CB or S to improve the play of our secondary. However, I agree with those that have posted that we should give Burnette and Lewis a chance to really understand our defensive system before using picks to replace them. Moreover, if it took Troy P a year to learn it, it only seems fair to give those kids a little more time. I know, that is difficult in the face of getting lit up by someone like B. Gradkowski, but I have always been told patience is a virtue. I would love to see some depth and/or competition added at the S position. I realize we signed Will Allen for just that reason, but I am not convinced Mundy is the long-term solution. Also, I am extremely worried about the level of abuse Troy takes from the manner in which he throws his body around. So, I am really hoping we grab a S in the 4th round. We also need depth and/or a future starter at the NT spot as Team H & H are getting long in the tooth. Finally, I would also love a replacement for Spaeth at TE. I love Heath, but I would also like to see us draft a guy that is really a OT living in a TE's body that mauls people in the run game. In an effort to expedite the conversation, here are the remaining players that various websites think might be worth drafting at each position.

Some caveats: 1) The foregoing rankings are taken from ESPN, NFL Draft Blitz, and NFL Draft Scout and sort of mashed together based on a combination of what the sites are posting and what I think; 2) the rankings are based on the remaining players, rather than an overall rank; 3) if there are any errors or omissions, they are my fault; and 4) if you know of a player that was omitted and should have been added, please let me know.
As noted above, from my perspective, we desperately need depth at Safety and Nose Tackle and could improve at back-up Tight End, back-up Tackle (I think the window is rapidly closing on Hills and Essex and Foster, Urbik, and Legursky appear to be back-ups for now) and maybe we think about a potential replacement/depth for Farrior if he calls it quits after this season. Consequently, I would like our remaining picks to look something like this:
4th: Safety (Jones, Chancellor, or Asante)
5th: Nose Tackle: (Cam Thomas) [note - I would like to see us package some of our picks and move up to the 4th because I think Thomas is gone by the 5th]
5th: Offensive Tackle: (Ed Wang)
5th: Inside linebacker: (Chaney, Hull, or Sharton (Sharton is a little small, but fast and would be solid in pass coverage))
5th: Tight End: (Michael Hoomanawanui - he is 6;5, 275 and look like a small OT!)
6th: Full Back: (Dennis Morris - 6'2, 245. 463 in the 40 an I hope he is nothing more than a tank that we use to clear running lanes for Mendenhall, Redman, Summers or whatever RB is toting the rock for us. I miss Kreider.
From a Free Agent perspective, I'd love to see us sign WR Kelton Tindal - Newberry. His numbers are 6'1, 197 with a 4.28 in the 40. He is supposed to be a poor man's Mike Wallace. If we could get him on our practice squad and coach him up, he might be a great complement to Wallace down the road. Just a thought. Anyone have any sleepers they would like to see signed as a free agent?
Hope every one enjoys the last 4 rounds of this year's draft.
Go Steelers!
