Dwyer was the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year. He was a four star prospect and was wanted by many of the top football teams in the NCAA. He supposedly ran a 10.81 in the 100 yard dash and was second in the state of Georgia, as well as recording a 4.48 in the 40 yard dash. Jon Dwyer was award Georgia's Player of the year(football). Dwyer got plenty of playing time last year as the backup running back to senior Tashard Choice. He played in all thirteen games during his freshman year. Tashard Choice was battling leg injuries during the course of the 2007 season which is big part of why Dwyer got to be on the field so much. Dwyer rushed for 436 yards on 82 attempts and 9 touchdowns. He had enough success on the football field that he was named to the 2007 ACC All Freshman Team.

Jonathan Dwyer is also known as, "The Diesel" and "D-Train," deemed by the play-by-play announcer of Georgia Tech, Wes Durham. Jonathan Dwyer is on watch for being the best running back in the ACC again and also possibly the best in the nation. Tashard Choice, now with the Dallas Cowboys, tells the magazine, "He's going to be among the leading rushers in the country next year, and if he stays healthy, he could lead the nation in rushing. He's that good." He's expected to be in the running for the Heisman the entire year if he can stay healthy and produces at the level that he did as a Sophomore.
